GTA 5 | PS3 vs PS5 4K Graphics Comparison

- Опубликовано: 15 мар 2022
- Grand Theft Auto 5 is out on next gen consoles taking advantage of some quality of life improvements like faster load times. Here's a video comparing the graphics from various cutscenes and gameplay sequences.
GTA V is now available with a fresh coat of paint for next-gen console owners of the Xbox Series S|X or PS5. In this video we do a graphics comparison using original old-gen PS3 footage compared to next-gen gameplay captured on the PS5. It's worth mentioning that the PS5 was running fidelity mode which maxes out its graphics but caps the frame rate to 30 frames per second. The difference becomes less noticeable when compared to a PS4 Pro beyond certain lighting and shading textures, but when compared to the PS3, the differences are stark.
Be sure to like and subscribe to this video and let us know in the comments how you feel about the next-gen release of GTA V, GTA Online, or what you would like to see from GTA VI in the future!

PS3 version looked great, the difference isn't that impressive considering they are two generations apart.

Rockstar for you make you pay 60$ for textures on rocks
@@DesireProspers it's only 40 dollars, but you can pick it up for 10 on ps5.
amazing, they've increased the brightness
It’s more of a difference when u actually play it urself
@@imnumber1535 the rain looked good but the graphics was mid when I tried yesterday
Rockstar used to make cutting edge games. Now they turn the brightness up on old games and re-release them multiple times.
Me: Bethesda No!!
Bethesda: Me what?
Me: Sorry, it's the tradition
Fun fact devs use darkness to actually hide bad textures. So when a remaster “just gets brighter” it’s usually because the textures have been improved and there’s no reason to hide them anymore.
The PS3 looks decent even today
PS3 version is way more nostalgic

That's because the graphics were way ahead of its time, the fact the ps5 version is nearly identical despite all the power of the new consoles show how lazy this version is
Is really someone going to buy this game again??
Bro it’s old asf, get yo broke self a ps5 son
Exactly. The PS5 is definitely an improvement but it's not drastic, but the problem with PS3 was the frame rate which constantly dropped to 23-25
Definitely not a giant leap, which is kinda disappointing, especially when you consider that it is 2 console generations apart.
It I the exact same game though and engine powering it just more powerful hardware running it. It's essentially like comparing the PC version lower settings to higher settings. It's not a remaster.
@@Late2Play true, but on ps5 its 10 which is ok...
@@Late2Play 10 bucks on PS5. I haven't played it since the 360 so I think it's a fair price.

But yes its a cashgrab defo
Was still a badass gaming experience, in 2013, even on PS3. A bit over it now almost a decade after the fact.
You know you made a good looking game when it still looks amazing two generations later.
well my only issue was the faces they look so unnatural. and we had games with much better faces even before GTA 5 was released
Crazy how it looks only 20% better
Because of ray-tracing 😂
It is way more than 20. If you even have played gta5 on PS3, you know how bad it looks compared to other platform.
20 percent? You are being very generous
10% at best
More like 5%.
People would of respected and appreciated this game more if it never left ps3 and 360.
They would’ve even respected it still if Rockstar gave us GTA 6 on next gen consoles instead.
Why in the world would Rockstar not release gta 5 on the brand new consoles that came out the very next month, that makes no sense. dumb thinking
Nah it made sense to put it on PS4 and Xbox One, just not the new generation.
We also would propably already have GTA 6 or whatever it would be called.
Would of doesn‘t exist
For those looking for a list of objective improvements, though not major, here it is :
-Added minor volumetric fog and lighting
-higher native resolution
-higher framerate cap (probably just thanks to hardware anyway)
-high texture resolution
-parallax mapping and bump mapping (usually seen on ground)
-better shadows and ambition occlusion
-subsurface scattering and more accurate global illumination (is the reason for ‘its just brighter’ comments)
forget about higher res reflections, more population, better grass, more particles
@@PowerGamerSC i only mentioned what my trained eye could see in this video from the brief moments they showed. Volumetrics and higher resolution were the most obvious, more accurate global illumination was only noticeable when Micheal was at the therapy session
You meant ambient occlusion not ambition occlusion :D
Theres also new lighting in cutscenes.
I dont think PS3 version has any global illumination.
And don't forget HDR implementation and Ray Tracing
I think it goes to show how far along things had gotten graphically by the time the PS3 had came around, as there isn't really much major differences or improvements over all here. It does feel like in some shots there is more light and more shadows on the PS3 versions, as if they were using both to try to maximise details in some ways. Whereas with the PS5 they've toned down the use of the light and shadows to let the graphics own level of detail shine through. The shrinks office is a good example of this.
However there are plenty of times some of the graphics looks sharper and more detailed on PS5, like the trees looks fuller, the snow and especially the ice on the car windows look more detailed, and the textures on the guns clearly have had a makeover as there is WAY more detail on them.
Other little differences I noticed was the satnav map has been redone and angled slightly differently, as has the 3rd person car view, which might just be a choice by the person who captured the footage, but the PS5 footage was lower and closer to the car.
It does look good, but unless there have been major updates to other issues like character movement, game loading, getting online and making sure there's no new bugs I'm not sure this is going to be really worth it.
Its not like gta v ps5 edition is even top 100 best looking ps4/ps5 games
No just shows how powerful rockstar’s engine is
I played them both and literally the only noticeable improvement aside from minor texture upgrades is that ps3 had some annoying dithering / aliasing from a distance that got removed. Pretty much it. Ps3 is also very dark but it’s probably my tv not being set for it.
Real differences can be seen in red dead 1 and 2
5:44 I feel like that's what Rockstar thought, too. That's why they didn't really do anything. And no, adding PC textures, higher resolution and increased brightness which means some shadows are basically gone isn't "really doing anything"... But sadly Rockstar isn't wrong, people will buy it anyway.
I think 7:37 it’s what they thought
@@feliperoche7278
Y’all don’t wanna show that PS4 Bc then it makes the ps5 look terrible since both versions of the game are the exact same.
You would be better off just showing ps3 vs PS4 since that was an actual worth it upgrade
There's actually a big difference between the PS4 version too. Smoke, shadows, vegetation, glass destruction, reflections, and loading times but I would rather see the PS3 because it's more dramatic and IGN knows that. You're not enlightening anyone.
@@Madblaster6 wow such a big difference

The only difference I see is that it’s brighter and that’s it. Considering they’re comparing PS3 to PS5 shows that the PS5 version is not an improvement from the PS4.
You can’t tell how the environmental textures are overall worst and more jaggy??
Textures are quite a big difference, 4K upscaling, antialiasing, lighting. Quite a few differences. Still, not big enough differences for me to buy it again.
I think that's an understatement to be fair. The shadows, lighting and textures are visiblity a lot better. Maybe not not at first glance but it looks a lot more natural for sure. Having said that, it's not enough to have have warranted a price tag or even calling it a PS5 edition. It should have been a free update

What about PS4 vs PS5??? Oh wait it's the same😂
This game should have been free at least for GTAV owners. I've been messing around in GTA Online on PS5 and there isn't a huge leap, however the game runs smoother, faster, and the controller haptics are cool. The low idle of the car you're in, the explosions, helicopter blades whirring above your head...it's pretty nice. You can tell the game is old though, even with 4K textures, ray tracing etc. It looks nice sometimes, and other times looks really dated. We just need a new GTA honestly. Enough of these half assed rehashes.
No what we really need is Red Dead Redemption 2 next gen upgrade not only that they announced GTA 6 and I don't care rockstar could take all the time they need to properly complete the game but people are so impatience
@Vergil I really enjoyed RDR2 and would love to see an upgrade to the next gen consoles.
"Looks like you have some fun planned for me, right, Vergil?!"
@Richy J Movies of all the things to call someone a Karen over, you choose this? How long did it take your 2 brain cells to think of this? It sounds like you don't even know the meaning of the term.
Rockstar mentality is they won't make a PS5 version if they're free
Get it on PC. You can play the game wether you decide to upgrade the PC hardware or not. And if you want better graphics and frame rates, just upgrade your PC and continue playing the game.
Umm…. Looks more cinematic on PS3 honestly
then go ahead play on it in 2022
@@SlavicRS I did. It's cooler.
I love how driving as Franklin in the first mission is the hardest thing in the world
$10 for faster load times basically
Ridiculous greed on Rockstars part.
I don't get it. The graphics didn't change. They just increased the brightness and contrast like 2 increments. I can do that in settings.
The difference is in the lighting. The biggest thing new graphics cards can do is create realtime realistic lighting, shadows, and reflections. Often old consoles use baked lighting to fake it and much less lights. The potential for further improved graphics is huge but not on old games developed for old tech
More like some texture improvements and better shadows and lighting.
@@ccvjd3909 wont change ghe fact it didnt had the promised ray tracing rofl

@@ccvjd3909 My point is that the jump from PS3 to PS5 is conceptually huge, but there's not much difference at all between the PS3 to PS5 versions.
Most of the textures didn't even change except maybe an almost unnoticeable amount of detail in faces.
7th gen was definitely the most impressive console generation of all-time. From games like Call of Duty 3 to Battlefield 4, Saints Row 1 to Grand Theft Auto V. No other generation will ever come close in terms of technological leaps within a single generation.
I love how Michael says "brad is gonna be fine" but when he's hit says "I'm gonna bleed out"
It doesn’t seem like much on RUclips but when you actually play it, it looks good
Show me the ps4 version then we talk.
Only thing I’ve noticed besides load time, was the hum of the bricks as you drive over them
Literally looks the exact same, albeit a little brighter. Rockstar really have gone all wrong.
Like CRYSIS, GTA V is future proofed
It “looks” the same as in the aesthetic hasn’t changed. The textures and resolution and hugely different. Draw distance improved, lighting enormously improved. In almost every scene the ps3 version shimmers, there’s jaggies everywhere, the background is low res, any angled surfaces has terrible anti aliasing.. come on, it’s obvious! It’s just “looks” the same..
@@crumblebee6728 does that make the game more fun?
It’s like when an old film is cleaned up and released in 4k/hd. It’s the exact same footage. Personally the slight blur of the ps3 material does a better job of hiding the age of the character models. Now in 4k you can see the game is aged compared to recent games like the last of us.
It's similar to how games like donkey kong country on the super Nintendo used the CRT scanlines to hide the pixels and make it look like a 3d model.
Also I noticed animations are sped up in remasters
The PS3 shadows are much more detailed. Look at the tree shadows on top of the truck.
Probably because PS3 had static/shadow maps projected downwards, to imitate shadow, where as PS5 has real time shadows, so actual shadows from actual objects in the world, but at low resolution
Rockstar could've applied all their time on GTA 6 instead wasting it on GTA 5
They literally couldn’t make GTA 6 because the PS4 wouldn’t be able to handle it, quit crying

PS3 looks better lol
The bald mans head in prologue in ps4 and ps5 is shining
What Rockstar were able to accomplish on ps3 hardware is mind blowing
I don't know if I'm exactly sure about it but in my opinion the graphics are way more in harmony in the PS3 version. It just feels weird to see only elements trying to be realistic in what's still a PS3 game in terms of graphics. It just doesn't feel right
Exactly
The PS3 was truly ahead of its time. We're talking a console that was released in 2006 that gave us phenomenal games that still look impressive to this day. Uncharted 3, The Last of Us, Red Dead Redemption, Max Payne 3, Bioshock infinite, God of War 3, God of War Ascension & AC4: Black Flag were all incredibly detailed graphically intensive games that showed why the PS3 delivered some of the best games ever made.
I will say that in 2023 GTA V and GTA Online looks fantastic on PS5! playing the game in the performance ray tracing mode is absolutely phenomenal. Performance RT mode targets 60fps with ray tracing enabled however the resolution is dynamic 4K meaning the resolution can fluctuate depending on the workload, but it generally stays close to 4K. When I watch my little brother play GTA Online on his base PS4 I can really see how massive a difference 60fps makes in terms of overall gameplay and graphical smoothness. I hope we get a GTA IV and RED DEAD REDEMPTION remaster for PS5!
Not just ps3, the 360 as well was a head of its time
Lol the 360 was ahead of its time
@@WarrenSiervo in comparison to the PS3 the 360 was not ahead of it's time. It didn't feature HDMI when it 1st launched, it used the same DVD storage tech as the PS2 and OG Xbox, the PS3 launched with HDMI, Blu-ray storage technology as well as well as an overly advanced CPU and GPU that made developers frustrated. However it proved to be extremely powerful and gave us games like uncharted 2/3 and the last of us both of which I don't think would've been possible on the Xbox 360. Now the Xbox 360 was incredible in it's own right but as far as ahead of it's time maybe when it first released in 2005 but as soon as 2006 brought with it the PS3 the 360 was not as technologically advanced as the PS3 was. I could go into detail about the tri-core IBM Xenon CPU and how it's actually a badass piece of tech especially by early 2000s standards. The cell processor on the PS3 was even more powerful and advanced but it's instruction set was extremely difficult to develop with but by the end it the generation the PS3 saw some truly remarkable games that proved it's mighty power was there all along. Happy gaming ✌️

Why would you bother?
Cut scenes look improved but actual game play looks exactly the same except the PS5 looks brighter.
And the game runs smoothly
There was no reason to put this on current gen when they were already backwards compatible. The other thing to consider is that this is a PS3 which is going on 2 decades old which will cause any console to lose some frames but aside from some minor details they look almost identical.
It is an advertisement for PS5 SSD loading times, controller haptic feedbacks and etc.

“Nine years ago”
I never played through GTA 5 fully, Im now playing it on PC again with the latest graphic mods installed, this game is still revolutionary.

The ps3 is a super computer
it's because it isn't even remastered, basically the same version
0:59 the bomb object is the only difference i seen 😂
Now we can see, how fantastic the PS3 was.
If this had mods on console it would've sold like hotcakes. I'm still confused why Bethesdas the only one that tried.
Some particle effects and some better details like the bomb in the opening scene. However the ps5 used too many particle effects when it detonated it looked like a powder bomb at 1:01 the PS3 looks better as there is more detail in the fire and shrapnel, the ps5 has to many effects that blur at that speed and have made the fireball too big that it whiteouts the screen.
For a game that is 9 years "newer" the PS5 has it's merit, but I would not rush to buy one even if I had never played gtav before. The wheel and charichter models look better at 7:19, however only as good as my 1070 which is in excess of 5 years old.
Now here is a game that needs not another remaster
Rockstar truely did God’s work making GTA V running on that 2006 dinosaur age hardware man.
Not to mention I've noticed while playing on PS3 first time I played and even recently it look SO INSANELY REAL , but really havent had that feeling with remaster it's almost to clear and to polished
Not gonna lie I am really struggling here to see anything.

So ps3 when Michael goes thru the sprinklers his clothes looked soaked but in the superior ps5 couldnt render that?
I remember not being able to wait for ps4 version and buying a ps3 just to play this game. It ended up being so worth it for a week straight. Sold the ps3 for about $50 less locally and got ps4 just to stream and run gta v when it came out. Back then a gaming PC was far superior to even the unlaunched consoles but now days the gap isnt as large due to GPU pricing. Now have series x and just sold my 6800xt. Will pickup a 7900xtx when prices settle down.
I feel like all of these rereleases plus the greediness of GTA Online have caused us to forget how truly amazing the core of this games single player really is, as well as the games open world, ESPECIALLY back in 2013. Really a shame.
Ummm, that video sold me on playing my PS3 version again. It looked incredible. You wanna know why the Switch is doing well? Because these generational graphic leaps don't exist anymore...the right PS3 / 360 games still look great.

I wonder how many generations GTA 6 will last😂
The lighting and shadows in this game were seriously ahead of their time. Ps3 version holds up today and would hold up more if it wasn't in 720p.
Its 1080p i guess
For the dumb people saying its just improved brightness
Textures are much more detailed
Shadows and lighting are massively improved, anti aliasing is hugely improved (see the therapy scene after the Bank or the car store scene)
Even things like writing on building signs are less blurry and actually readable, and buildings in general are much cleaner, especially in the distance
and only need 9 years to improve that endless list...
Ok boomer.
Nah I'm kidding you've made a fair argument.
That's fair but they should've done more or not release it at all.

ITs looked like that on pc for like over 5 years now
I remember being absolutely blown away when this first dropped on ps3
Honestly, the PS3 had some pretty impressive graphics. I think that game companies should do ten year cycles for game consoles instead of five year cycles.

Definitely the lighting and shadows are the biggest improvement on the PS5 based on my own play through. Was concerned Rockstar would butcher this edition like GTA Trilogy.
They have butchered it. Releasing a game for the 5th time is pathetic.
