This is the most successful entertainment product ever made and Rockstar couldn’t just give us the upgrade like so many other studios have. The greed is unbelievable.
Seems like an oversight for Rockstar not to increase Anisotropic Filtering to at least 8x considering that it improves the texture blurriness with a very low impact on performance.
Yes, 8X is much better than 4X. I could understand it if they didn't go as 16x because the advantage is negligible despite the massive amount of memory needed
One thing I'd like to add about the haptic feedback that didn't get brought up on the video is in gta online, when your at the night club, the closer you are to the speakers in the club blasting music, the more intense of haptic vibrations that the controller gives off. And you can literally feel the detail of the bass produced and it feels as if you put your hand on the speaker yourself. If you like haptics I reccomend checking out your nightclub in the new ps5 version
One big point you missed out on is that they seemingly have decoupled the (driving) physics from the frame rate. Before, the frame rate had big impact on what times you were able to achieve in races, this difference is now gone in the PS5 release
Yeah, I don't really notice these things unless pointed out to me, but I definitely started to notice this when out in the countryside, where the environment is less busy.
This was my first takeaway from the game. 60 FPS does make the gameplay better, but visually, this enhancement only makes the fact that this is a 8/9 year old game stand out, it feels like playing with a mod.
I don't understand why AF (anisotropic filtering) is always skimped on. I've been putting it at 16x for as long as I've been able to. The performance hit is practically non existent compared to the visual upgrade. Same with texture quality. Unless you are out of vram, high res textures are not a big impact at all yet the visual difference is huge.
I agree, although I’ve always disliked the look of 16x in most games. It’s unnatural for things to look that sharp at those angles, even in real life or on any camera. 8x is usually the perfect balance.
I'm also confused about this. Especially in games like "The Last of Us 2" and also "Ghost of Tsushima"; Creators of these games are obsessed with details, especially naughty dog, details that are sometime so extreme that you wouldn't normally notice, but they don't care about something that fundamental?
It's always a shame, AF 16x is mandatory for me. Mud textures at an angle look awful. As for comparisons to real life what you need is physically based rendering to add sheen to such surfaces, not muddy textures.
@@itsd0nk Yep, I've always preferred using 8x over 16x. Outlines on some objects can look a little too overly crisp and sharp at times, while using 16x. While using 8x on the other hand, it seems to soften down and blur the edges just a touch. Which in turn, gives it a more natural look and without it looking jagged like with lower settings of 4x or lower. 8x is often the sweet spot, at least for me anyway.

Original MP3 uses pre-rendered cutscene to create a 'fake' seamless experience, for the remaster i would like to see a real-time cutscene by utilizing ps5's ssd.
A game originally designed for PS3 made its way to PS4 with improvements and now to PS5 with "further improvements". Guess if i live long enough, i may see it on PS7 with "additional improvements".
They did the bare minimum and are charging for it, while a lot of other games have made way better next gen ports for free. Rockstar being Rockstar, I guess.

@Cptn_Avery Not really, They just showed off the minimal differences in this video. Probably saved a bunch of people $10. Biggest difference is RT shadows and 60fps. We got a much bigger update doing the last gen update.
Blame Take Two not Rockstar. Rockstar were only going to remaster it once for PS4. But since it was so successful greedy Strauss Zelnick and the shareholders want to milk it for every penny it's worth. Along with kids buying tons of Shark Cards with their mom's credit cards. So they forced Rockstar to remaster it again for PS5.

The draw distance is shocking to me. It honestly ruins the game for me it’s so bad. Even in Fidelity mode, you get straight up PS2 looking buildings that are only like a block away. It even affects cutscenes; during the mission where you have to do Yoga as Michael in his backyard, one of the buildings from downtown that dominates the background straight up looks like a PS2 asset. It’s embarrassing.
The gap in draw distance details between the new next Gen versions and the old PC version is still very surprising. I put draw distance up there as a high priority for me. Sucks to see it wasn’t increased or updated in any way for next Gen. This is proven at 14:42
@eel3161 the PS5 have better specs than my expensive PC. I have a Ryzen 3600, 16gb DDR4 ram, gaming mobo, M.2 Memory, and 1070ti. That cost me 1k+ back in 2019 and the PS5 is slightly more powerful for $399. It definitely can do more. I also own a PS5 and it's a beast of a machine.

I’ve noticed recently just how improved the reflections are in the fidelity mode. They drastically change the look of the game especially in night time scenes. There are many reflections from lights that I’ve found to be totally missing in the performance modes, and made the game feel much more detailed.

@@orijimi True. It's all about money so someone at Rockstar has surely calculated that making the port isn't worth it. I'm not saying it wouldn't make profit but companies expect certain amount of profit before approving projects.
On PC you can use DSR (dynamic super resolution) to get a much sharper image, instead of MSAA (which kills performance and makes the grass disappear). I recommend using FXAA combined with DSR for the absolute best picture quality on PC.
One thing I am almost certain I remember from the PS3 version was how the game targeted the left and right vibration motors independently, creating a really cool haptic sensation, in particular; driving the at the edge of a freeway and going over those little ridges that warn you about this being the edge of the road, you could feel which side those bumps were on and it was just super cool to me. This does not work using a controller on PC (as far as I am aware), and I skipped the PS4 version so I don't know if they kept that there, but could someone check if this works with PS5 haptics; the game is cheap *enough* that this small detail might be what sways me to pick it up
The PS5 version does indeed seem to vibrate the relevant side of the controller more intensely depending on which side the car is being affected by whatever road condition / obstacle you've hit. The effect is subtle, but definitely noticeable. In fact, coming from a PC GTA V player (I've never really played the PS4 or PS3 versions), this effect was one of the first that I noticed for the new haptics.
I like how you refer to the ps4 version as the "originally release" I almost forgot that this game came out on ps3. Anyway if the only thing they are offering is visual improvement, this thing should be running at least at a solid 1080p 60 fps and rt alway activated.
With PC shadows, if you use the softest setting it has that shadow box like on PS4, however, this is fixed with both the AMD and Nvidia shadows at the cost of flickering shadows and instability depending on the card. Also, this game definitely hasn't been optimised for next-gen consoles very well, the PS5 definitely has enough horsepower to get better results than this, especially in LoD and draw distance.
It can´t utilize all cores i suppose. I think it uses only 4 cores. ps5 have 8. Same with pc if all cores in use like red dead redemption 2 fps would be all the time above 100 on 2k with very high settings.
That's a good point. But the GPU is also a large factor as the PS4/Xbox one versions would have been designed for 12 and 18 CU's respectively and I doubt they optimised much above that for this remaster and just let them run at the Series X and PS5's 1.8GHz and 2.3GHz clock speeds. It just seems minimum effort just like the "Definitive" Trilogy.
@@chrismorrison5301 knowledge of hardware functionality. These are SoCs, cut down underclocked/undervolted systems on a chip, or in AMD semantics, APUs. I'm also gaming on high-end hardware, and GTA V even at nearly a decade old is still extremely taxing.
A developer finally scaled up the depth of field bokeh with resolution increases? The one thing I would’ve liked to see is if it scales between the three graphics modes, since at least two of them are at different res. I’m wondering if it was just a ballpark bump they gave the whole effect, or if it actually has the same effective camera aperture between the resolution changes. This stuff drives me insane lately with all the cross platform upgrades.
I sort of wanted this upgrade to GTA4 instead (including DLCs), that game needs it more because for GTA5 we already have a solid PC version, whereas GTA4 on PS3 and 360 doesn't look great anymore and the PC version is hardly optimized. Not to mention that I think Niko's story is more interesting and has a good amount of replay value.
As a old fan of GTA4 that game sucks by todays standards, the missions are boring af and the story doesn't help at all cause the gameplay gets boring so damn fast. So I think it's best to let that game die and move forward.
I love this games single player campaign to death and thats saying alot since I consider Vice City, San Andreas, Gta 3 and the ps2 the golden era of gaming. So I honestly hate to say this but I am pretty sick of seeing this game milked for what it is and Rockstar after all this time still refused to give us a proper single player dlc followup for 5.
I'm glad you noticed the cutscene stutters. This is also the case with RDR2. I wasn't sure if it was just me but thankfully you have that issue too. I hope they can resolve it (on pc too) but I'm afraid they won't

Will be interesting to see if they bring the slight improvements over to PC or not. I wish they actually put some proper effort into the "enhancements" and improved the game more significantly past PC, not like the hardware couldn't handle it but might have been too much work considering the engine limitations. It's good that the console versions of the game are in a much better state now though.
I do not fully agree on that. Those shadows are treated as from a single source where the PC is treating it as the actual double source headlights realy are. In another comparision they showed an unrealistic sharp an dark on a building far away, even that the area should have less shadows in that area due to streetlights. The new glas physics are a bit over the top as well.

I'm sorry, there is no "upgrade". You can buy the next-gen version of the game. It doesn't matter if you own the game on PS4 / XBox One or not. Yes, it's currently discounted to $10 on PS5 and $20 on XBox, but that only lasts up to June. So... there is no "upgrade" option here, and people not buying now will have to pay $40 for this next-gen version. For that, it's really pretty bad, honestly. Yeah, RT shadows are nice and better anti-aliasing is neat, too, which adds up to considerably better image quality, but that seems to be about it? No retouched geometry, no up-ressed textures, not even upped the AF setting (seems like a very stupid thing to skip, that's basically free on modern GPUs). Overall, this just seems like a bit "minimum effort" so they can advertise advertise it as "next-gen version with RT support". For $40, that's pretty disappointing, honestly.
I'm not sure what you were expecting? The best these new consoles were going to be able to do was bring the previous gen version in line with the PC version, that's about all the hardware resource can afford 🤷🏽♂ Remastering old gen games are pretty much all gamers are going to have to get themselves used to if 4K 60 fps is going to be delivered as promised and this has been a theme since the mid gen console refreshes and is a complete mug off in my opinion. This particular game is a 7th gen title (yes, 7th gen, let that sink in) and they're going on like this release is some sort of achievement - it isn't. So I agree with you, except that you shouldn't have expected more, this is as good as it's going to get with the hardware on offer, unless you want to see a dramatic drop in frames and a drop in resolution.
@@Longlostpuss I was arguing against the conclusion of the video that this was somehow a decent upgrade for the asking price. It's a minimum effort "remaster" that's intended to be sold for $40. For that kind of money, one _might_ expect, as I said, some actual effort put into that remaster. Improved textures, improved character models, improved character shading, higher anisotropic filtering... all of these would probably have been possible, even on console hardware. I'm not a GTA fan. I will definitely not be buying this, don't get me wrong. I was just arguing against the conclusion of the video.
@@MR-vg7yn Again, not disagreeing with you on lack of value for supposed upgrade, even DF themselves imply this in their follow up video. I was just saying that in all honesty, the consoles weren't really capable of better than what was done here. Even the original vanilla GTA V on PC was very taxing on the hardware once you cranked settings up, you needed a very tight rig to do it. For the upgraded modded visuals, you needed a monster rig to run those and even then, you could still run into performance hiccups here and there, so these consoles had no chance of doing anything beyond what we see here. The real issue, as DF said themselves, is that Rockstar were charging too much for the upgrade. On PC, enhanced editions of your existing library would often be downloadable for free if you already had the original game, but the console model deliberately makes your old library untransferable - that's the issue here and has always been the problem with its ecosystem. This is by design in my opinion, they always want to make it so they have that excuse to milk more money out of you and is why I don't understand why anyone still locks themselves into consoles beyond the age of say 18. PC is where it's at.
1000% agree everyone's telling me to get a pc but my pc "gaming" experience stopped with 3d pinball on windows xp 🤣🤣 im so glad consoles finally can run games at a solid 60fps even though there were a few ps4 titles that ran at 60 fps with a lot of frame dips on the ps4 pro they were never locked and often played the same as the base and slim ps4 with higher resolution but having that buttery smooth performance and some games even supporting up to 120fps on PS5 is great
I only play games in 60+ these days. I'm really happy to see console games pushing for 60fps now, even if the console industry has already lost me at this point.
you should make that hop to PC and see what 120+ fps feels like, then you can take about game changers. the fact you waited until 2022 to experience something I experienced in 2012 is awful
Honestly RDR2 made better use of their in house engine than gta v ever did and the new version is just an updated port that runs smoother and has ray tracing if you want it, with RDR2 since the assets are easier on the gpu they'd probably be able to actually improve it rather drastically like the 2013 to 2015 re release of gta v
1440p and 60 FPS, maybe slightly better textures and I would be happy. But as long as they get their money from all the GTA kids they won't do a damn thing.

I have the ps4 version and got the pc version free through Epic, and now have the ps5 version for $12.50 CAD. Anyone who is saying they can't see a difference clearly hasn't played the new version and is basing their "informed" opinion on RUclips compressed videos. I went directly from playing the ps4 version to the ps5 version and the visual difference is immediately apparent, to anyone with eyes that work. So is the smoothness in gameplay. It's actually much easier to notice the difference between ps4 and ps5 than it is to notice the difference between ps5 and maxed out ultra on my pc running a 3080, where I barely noticed any difference. I'm not using software or looking at numbers, just what my actual eyes can see, and there is a very clear difference between ps4 and ps5, and the difference between ps5 and pc maxed is barely noticeable, visually. fps is still better on pc, obviously, but visually, you really have to zoom in to see a difference. That being said, I have to agree with the disappointment. I was hoping for an upgrade to the rdr2 engine. The ps3 to ps4 upgrade was huge. This one, not so much.
The fact that it takes a digital foundry analysis to see any difference between this and the PS4 version goes to show how little effort Rockstar put into this, and how greedy it is to charge for something that should have been a free patch. Rockstar has truly become what it always parodies in it games.

Yeah I was about to point that out. Love that game.
Backwards compatibility on Xbox thank goodness

A game originally designed for PS3 made its way to PS4 with improvements and now to PS5 with "further improvements". Guess if i live long enough, i may see it on PS7 with "additional improvements".
Nah. They about maxed out what they could do with this game
They did the bare minimum and are charging for it, while a lot of other games have made way better next gen ports for free. Rockstar being Rockstar, I guess.
Honestly,I feel bad for Xbox players!!!Like Literally Rockstar Is Selling The Game For like 19 $$$ (More expensive than PS5 version),And It is undoubtedly Unoptimized Mess!!!
Keep crying
@Cptn_Avery Not really, They just showed off the minimal differences in this video. Probably saved a bunch of people $10. Biggest difference is RT shadows and 60fps. We got a much bigger update doing the last gen update.
Blame Take Two not Rockstar. Rockstar were only going to remaster it once for PS4. But since it was so successful greedy Strauss Zelnick and the shareholders want to milk it for every penny it's worth. Along with kids buying tons of Shark Cards with their mom's credit cards. So they forced Rockstar to remaster it again for PS5.
The Max Payne 3 music paired with this analysis pretty nicely

@@carlosdonizetti9573 you can look at the Digital Foundry comparison between PS4/Xbox One and PS3/X360 for this game. Why would they repeat work they have already done?
The draw distance is shocking to me. It honestly ruins the game for me it’s so bad. Even in Fidelity mode, you get straight up PS2 looking buildings that are only like a block away. It even affects cutscenes; during the mission where you have to do Yoga as Michael in his backyard, one of the buildings from downtown that dominates the background straight up looks like a PS2 asset. It’s embarrassing.
Graphics from a 2013 game, still look better than Elden Ring.
The gap in draw distance details between the new next Gen versions and the old PC version is still very surprising. I put draw distance up there as a high priority for me. Sucks to see it wasn’t increased or updated in any way for next Gen. This is proven at 14:42
That also disappointed me as well as the lack of at least 8x anisotropic filtering which makes a big difference.
Still, nice to see overall.
@eel3161 it does, but the developers are lazy and didn't wanna take time to update that, maybe they will in a future update
Still the PS5 version is the best version out there even according to Alex. It looks better overall especially on a 4k HDR TV
@@chickendinner5572 I have to agree. I'm running with 32 gigs RAM, a 9th gen i7 and an RTX2060. Its easy to think it will outperform the PS5, until resolution is considered. Yes, I can run most games maxed out, with raytracing, usually at 60fps +, and it looks magnificent, but its a laptop at 1080p. Plug that laptop into a 4k monitor and it quickly shows just how amazing that $400 console is.

shoutout to the use of all the Max Payne 3 music in this
I’ve noticed recently just how improved the reflections are in the fidelity mode. They drastically change the look of the game especially in night time scenes. There are many reflections from lights that I’ve found to be totally missing in the performance modes, and made the game feel much more detailed.

On PC you can use DSR (dynamic super resolution) to get a much sharper image, instead of MSAA (which kills performance and makes the grass disappear). I recommend using FXAA combined with DSR for the absolute best picture quality on PC.

Thanks for using the Max Payne 3 soundtrack, so much nostalgia

Linneman's definition of what constitutes a retro game (a decade) makes sense, in my opinion!
"EXPANDED AND ENHANCED" Literally added RT Shadows and turned up the Grass setting one notch.
We need gta 4 and red dead 1 on next gen like yesterday
And yes i will pay again for it
As a old fan of GTA4 that game sucks by todays standards, the missions are boring af and the story doesn't help at all cause the gameplay gets boring so damn fast. So I think it's best to let that game die and move forward.

I still think they should have released current gen version of red dead 2.
I've noticed that objects in front of headlights from cars can cast shadows now, where the ps4 version never had that feature
It's only your car. The npc headlights don't cast shadows
Unfortunately it was downgraded, on the pc version both the headlights cast shadows, but on ps5 it only uses 1 invisible light in the middle.
Even GTA4 had that on PC.

The best these new consoles were going to be able to do was bring the previous gen version in line with the PC version, that's about all the hardware resource can afford 🤷🏽♂
Remastering old gen games are pretty much all gamers are going to have to get themselves used to if 4K 60 fps is going to be delivered as promised and this has been a theme since the mid gen console refreshes and is a complete mug off in my opinion.
@@Longlostpuss
I was arguing against the conclusion of the video that this was somehow a decent upgrade for the asking price.

I only play games in 60+ these days. I'm really happy to see console games pushing for 60fps now, even if the console industry has already lost me at this point.
Yeah. Wow. It took only three console gens to make the game run on 60fps
I've experienced gta v on 60fps 1080P ever since it came out to pc. Experiencing it on 120fps @2K nowadays.
you should make that hop to PC and see what 120+ fps feels like, then you can take about game changers. the fact you waited until 2022 to experience something I experienced in 2012 is awful
This makes me want a PS5 update to RDR2 all the more.

This update should have been free. i feel this is a cash grab
The fact that it takes a digital foundry analysis to see any difference between this and the PS4 version goes to show how little effort Rockstar put into this, and how greedy it is to charge for something that should have been a free patch. @@MrNelahem Ever seen a 3.5“ SSD? Me not! No, I mean an HDD, alright. The standard PS4/Xbox One HDD is a 2.5“ drive with 5400 revolutions/minute and only 8 MB cache. I use an 3.5 HDD external (via Case) with 7200 r/m and 256 MB cache. The gain in read speed is noticeable, while the costs are less compared to an SSD Latter is a waste of money on a PS4, as their are too many bottlenecks. Only a fraction of an SSD‘s speed potential can be utilized on the PS4/Xbox One.
Edit: You do not even go that far. For about 60 US$ I bought a WD Black 1TB last month. It‘s a 2.5“ HDD with 7200 r/m and and a 64 MB cache, which can be used internal. Even that boosted loading times quite well.
@@sunnyfrisch I would still rather put in a 1TB SATA SSD that go for $100 now than a 7200 RPM drive
@@MrNelahem Won‘t be that much faster, since unfortunately the PS4 does not feature a dedicated I/O chipset like the PS5. Here the CPU still has to do the decompression, apart from other shortcomings. And I have used 3.5“ HDDs on the PS4 for years. Won‘t change to SSD, only because they got a little cheaper. Different topic on the PS5.
@@sunnyfrisch yes but will make less noise than a HDD
Absolutely shocked at the AF and LOD stuff. I was ready to buy this!
Do you keep licking you're screen every 1min before progressing?

It's 10 bucks. It's cheap. Get it.
Dont encourage this practice
Great work as always. I love the little bits like Doom levels and the not controversial sign peppered in what's essentially a very dry technical analysis, I think it makes for a much more engaging video.
Well I'm glad they could make it more fun for you children
This is the review I was waiting on
Should have also included the PS3 version as well just to show the differences in jump.
Max payne 3 soundtrack is a classic
thanks for pointing out the dual sense! I love when games implement this
The Performance RT mode is near flawless, but exhibits some heavy framerate drops in the online mode. Some small drops in the nightclub but MAJOR drops during the Cayo Perico heist, low 40s high 30s. I would suggest switching to Performance whenever you play the heist because it isn't very pleasent.
60fps,1440p with RT should be the standard mode for games on the latest consoles.
Sorry, but GTAV runs perfectly fine with quite high settings at 4K/60 on my old PC from 2014 with basic Intel Core i5-4460, 12GB (3x4GB) of cheap DDR3 RAM at 1600 MHz, and GTX1660Ti (the graphics card is the only newer component I added back in 2019). There is NO excuse for Rockstar to make this lazy port that performs worse on the new generation of consoles. The low AF screams year 2000, and together with the low LOD level, they both are killing the graphics on PS5. Instant no buy.
I feel like Alex is the only person on god's earth who found the RT in E&E. Nice video.
60FPS and DualSense support is awesome but that’s about it. I expected the bare minimum from Rockstar and yet I still came out disappointed. It’s weird that they didn’t give this game, considered to be one of the best selling pieces of entertainment, the proper upgrade it deserved. What a shame.
You expect too much from ps5 hardware. Its just not that good
@@geesehoward7261 It's pretty good. The gpu is at par with an rtx 2070 super which is very decent mid range gaming gpu.
Doesn't surprise me, look how bad they did San Andreas.
@@talharehman3664 2070 super is old. Not a 4k gpu. It also features harware ray tracing where ps5 does not
@@geesehoward7261 4k 60 is too much to ask from a $400 console. Its pretty decent for the price. Get a $3000 pc if you want 4k 60 then
Been WAITING for this to drop!
If you bought this again, congratulations, you played yourself.
