The game used to be a lot harder . They never show the worst two injuries - Jason Dunstall inverted fractured skull , James Hird separation of facial bones from the skull . Both recovered and went on with their outstanding careers. At lower levels there have been players paralysed and even death (usually some undiagnosed heart problem). The bump where one bloke pushes the other after they make contact is the Selwood brothers saying G'day to each other.
Omg...the James Hird injury was horrific. As a Geelong supporter, I will never forget Tom Lonergan losing a kidney and almost dying. I always hold my breath when players hold their kidneys.
The one i most remember was then doggies' captain scotty wynd blindsiding some poor bugger (can't remember who)..everyone on tv could see scotty lining him up a mile away..perfectly legal, but boy he must've felt that for weeks..
Afl know your enemy definitely worth a watch. Within 10 yards of the ball you can be knocked over legally. Hip n shoulder is usually the best way to do it.
When I played as a defender, the coach told us to punch the ball hard and if the ball had ears, punch it even harder. Thst was nearly 40 years ago. It's different today
