    This is a great video. I'm a goju guy and I really like the movement. It's snake-like. Very close to nature.

    Gogen Yamaguchi Hanshi taught my teacher. Gogen Yamaguchi always requested for my teacher to do kumite in front of him. My teacher always knocked out who every he fought. My teacher was a member of the 1st United States karate team for the 1st World Karate Championship in Tokyo, Japan 1970.

    So that is how he did the Kata. I learned that Kata and Suparempei from and instructor who trained under him, yet he taught them to me a little different then The great patriarch had did them. I also seen video of him doing Suparempei and it was slightly different for those who followed after him. I am trying to figure out if he just sometime improvised the Kata in demo's because he was the 10 degree founder and that is how he felt like doing it that day.

    I meet Gogen Yanaguchi in the middle 1970's (& I can prove it) with my Goju-Ryu teacher Yasunobu Nagai, who was a direct student of Gogen Yamaguchi from 1950.
    This Kata is not separate Sanchin Kata and Tensho Kata, but a "Composite" Kata that Gogen Yamaguchi titled "Sanchin-Tensho" kata. you will find this in page 54 of his book "Goju-Ryu By The Cat".
    As for Yamaguchi not being a personal student of Miyagi, I have a photo of Miyagi at the Yamaguchi Dojo in the early 1930's. As well, if one checks the records of the ButokuKai in Kyoto, you will find both Miyagi and Yanaguchi are there often (at the same time) through the 1930's. All this dose not prove anything, but....... never mind what the Okinawan Goju people say, as they have a bias against Yamaguchi,

      Deena Naidu, thank you Sensei Naidu. I am glad to see this rare video of Gogen Hanshi. Still when i see a lot of these texts it make me feel like 90% of these people are not training in karate or budo. Rare in deed to be among those who do train in budo. That is why i honor you and your words. Martial Arts begin and ends with respect. I seen the best of the best in Goju kai kuniting and its not to be matched by anyone else

      I'm not sure how many karate styles do these things. The goju lineage certainly does, and probably others still in Okinawa, but I'm not sure about styles like Shotokan etc, especially the way they are commonly taught outside Japan. Even in goju these are difficult high level techniques, although they start teaching them immediately even to beginners. It's just that it takes very many years to first understand the point, and then to develop the technique.

    • @ninjafruitchilled

      You can practice either of them hard or soft. I agree I would usually do tensho with different breathing to this, but I have certainly seen it done like this also. Also ju doesn't necessarily mean "soft" exactly, it also means flexible, pliable, etc. It's Bruce Lee's "be water, my friend". Water can be soft, but also hit like a tonne of bricks :).

      @ninjafruitchilled 7 месяцев назад

      @@Ray-qb7tk Of course it is Sanchin. Perhaps you are thinking of a different kata, because what he is doing here is certainly Sanchin kata, of Goju-ryu origin. Yamaguchi Gogen sensei here learned it directly from Miyagi Chojun and then made it a core teaching of the Goju Kai school that he founded. And it is the same as I have seen done in other branches of Goju ryu in schools originating from Miyagi's other students.

      Sandy Herman you do not know the man. By the way you speak in your texting. You do not know martial arts either. I have black belts in the Goju Kai, IOGKF, & Kyokushin Kai. I am also a life long student of martial arts. Texting the term gay is a sign of disrespect. In no way is that term a part of martial arts. Like Sensei Morio Higaonna said : " Martial Arts begins and ends with respect ! " I do not know you, but i know of those words. They are spoken out of 90% of Americans today, & are all over the Tv.

    • @eugeneterrell5183
      @eugeneterrell5183 7 лет назад

      Sandy Herman , strive to be not like the 90% of Americans. Try to be like the ten percent that choose to be better. My teachers were student of Gogen Hanshi. When it came to kumite i have not seen anyone that is better. I seen someone just as equal to the top 5 black belts of those at Gogen Hanshi dojo. That was Sensei Morio Higaonna

      It depends a bit on style. These days in Goju Kai we would move less, but this is a very old video and Kaiso is probably doing it in a more old school Okinawan way here. As for the gi, it's just a more traditional Japanese gi top than usually used in karate, a kind of kimono I guess? (I'm not up on the correct words for various items of Japanese clothing). It's more formal, and I guess this is a kind of ceremonial Kata being performed to open a new dojo so that's probably why he's wearing it. I don't think he wore one like that in normal training.
