      I remember in the authorized novel Q-Squared, when a male alien character who was about to get married, said how much he respected Picard and the Enterprise crew and thought they were good role models for being a husband and father, Q joked that only one of the senior officers had managed to reproduce, and he didn't even know about it yet (that book was set between this episode and "Reunion" where Alexander was revealed)

  • @spuwho
    @spuwho 3 года назад +86

    Michael Dorn used to complain at the early conventions about how Worf never got any babes. He even asked the writers to give him a shot at Troi way back when (which they semi-obliged later). Getting back into character development, Starfleet officers were discouraged from getting married due to the commitment levels and the need to change duty assignments often. Like many modern naval officers they kept the spouse on-planet or tried to get stationed to larger Starbases or Galaxy Class ships. In K'Ehleyr's case she was committed to the Federation Diplomatic Corp with the same issues. It required her to be in transit between K'hronos and Earth all the time. Not a good way to form and maintain a healthy relationship. Worf and K'Ehleyr in essence were married to their careers and Alexander paid for it. Not too unlike most dual-career couples today.

    It was nice to see the cliche gender roles reversed here, where the male wants commitment and the female runs from it. But Worf was right, K'Ehleyr's tough attitude masks her insecurity. She's like B'Elanna Torres, conflicted over her Klingon half.

    This may seem controversial but i sense an agenda to deliberately avoid promoting unions between MEN and WOMEN. Were the writers against traditional relationships? Did they have another agenda in mind? I wonder what the writers sexual orientation was?

    • @michaelmaxwell2464
      @michaelmaxwell2464 Год назад +3

      Uh no. This was more of the idea that a woman may want to flirt, play etc but not committ and that is her right. So its more a feminism matter here. Remember in our culture it is often the man who wants to avoid committment. This flips it.

    • @XTRABIG
      @XTRABIG Год назад +3

      @@michaelmaxwell2464 Well then i'm right. This is a theme all across Star Trek. Outside of Obrien and Kaiko... most relationships or love interests depicted on Star trek are platonic and non commital. I dont think that's an accident. Very deliberate. Only peripheral characters seem engaged in what could be xonsidered some kind of traditional union.

    • @michaelmaxwell2464
      @michaelmaxwell2464 Год назад +3

      @@XTRABIG Riker and Troi was not platonic. It was a will they won't they. Same with Picard and Crusher but Picard had a fling with Vash. And Riker well to say that he was a womanizer would be too polite. Worf and Kehlar(spelling) had a son. Picard also had a fling with the Chief Science Officer female. Geordi had a thing with the female murder suspect. Data and Yar. So if you are saying no long term relationships with the main cast then yes but it wasn't about those relationships being platonic as many were NOT. Miles and Keiko were not main cast. More time was spent with the main cast on adventures so little focus was given to their love lives. Not the reach you are reaching since they ALL had non platonic but short term relationships. As is often the case with people in certain jobs, the main characters were essentially MARRIED-to their CAREERS. Besides Riker and Troi got MARRIED during the movies. Worf was involved with Troi for a while as well. Moving to DS9, he married Dax. In an alternate future Picard and Crusher were married and divorced. Well turns out they now have a son.

      Picard stymied Worf's Klingon instincts because it was the flagship of Starfleet and they were on a diplomatic and exploration mission. Worf grew to accept this role. When Worf moved to Deep Space 9, Sisko let Worf embrace his heritage because a station on the fringe was far more dangerous an assignment.
