There is a really big distinction between chemical dependency and addiction. They tend to occur in tandem and while dealing with people who have this going on with its important to 1. Level with them and establish clear boundaries and create clear communication that shows u fully understand the severity of the situation 2. Acknowledge the real effects this is going to have on this person just like u would with a common cold or a person who’s depressed. 3rd we are actually advise them call their insurance provider and request a case manager because they clearly can’t get to help to be referred them to facility/hospital that can help them and keep them safe if u know this person and you’d like to advocate for them and express ur concern it will help a lot. if someone had a fatal wound we would call ems, addiction and chemical dependency can also be life threatening so while we may not have a responsibility to help them we can advise them to get on the phone with someone who can on the back of the card. Lastly 4. During Mental health crisis we actually dial 988 in the US just like we call 911 during an emergency. Call, explain what u saw and ask if The person in crisis would like to speak to someone who can help them, because you, are not that person. Have a great day

I had a pharmacist refuse to refill my clonazepam on the day it was due to be filled because she said I was acting like I had an addiction issue. She said I was very anxious and fidgeting. Well of course I was anxious. I have chronic anxiety disorder and panic disorder. I’m always anxious. I called my doctor and they had a long conversation and then she filled them. Now every time I go to the pharmacy I only go to this one location I found because they know me there. I won’t ever trust another pharmacy outside of theirs.

I do the same thing with the pharmacy I go to. I have ADHD and have been on the same dosage of the same medications for 6.5 years now. The reason I go to the same pharmacy is also because I have a prescription history that goes back the same length of time. There's always hangups and frustrations with it, but not because of the pharmacy. Those incredible people at that particular location have fought for me on many occasions, and have cheered for me when I had to chew out my insurance company for the formulary changes that happen at arbitrary times, which patients aren't informed about in any way. They know to expect stupid, complicated bureaucratic bullshit for me, and to my understanding, this is common with ADHD patients. It wouldn't surprise me if it were also true for people with chronic anxiety, bipolar disorder, PTSD... As well as people with chronic pain. Like people who have necrosis in their bones, people whose joint replacements aren't being accepted by their bodies successfully. I've seen elderly people in that kind of pain, and it literally is that serious. The way the DEA and FDA make and enforce rules is crazy.

Mind you I only had a month supply of valium so a whole month went by where I hadn't taken anything so I was not mixing medications my doc was trying to figure out what worked best. My anxiety was caused by my lack of ability to focus. So the Adderall was the solution for me instead of anxiety meds and he gave me a month to let one out of my system before we tried another but the pharmacist decided to play doctor that day and I walked out with nothing and had my shit transferred the next day. Lol I am not on anything now because I am a recovering addict of fentanyl and xanax but im sure all my fellow former addicts know the feeling of leaving the pharmacy empty handed. Lol

    • @KISEMA02
      @KISEMA02 4 месяца назад

@@Just_a_cat_0 Medications can have addictive qualities. Most of the time it’s not the drug itself that keeps people using, it’s what it does for them such as pain management. Once/ if the source of the need for the medication is resolved, the medication itself has side effects (withdrawals) that make people feel really ill. To resolve that pain/ sickness people will continue to use to make it stop. Most addiction can never be addressed until the source of the problem is addressed (reason for use/ what they get out of it) so alternative coping mechanisms can be explored.
The sad part is people will go to detox and treatment but end up back in the same community that often encourages use/ doesn’t support staying clean. It’s hard once you get really deep in addiction to find like minded people outside of addiction even when relocating. Hence why people feel they can’t get away from “certain types of people” (another example is people getting into abusive relationships over and over). It’s what they know and it’s hard to connect to people of different walks of life sometimes. Then with the lack of supports to assist you with staying sober/ addressing secondary affects of addiction, people often turn back to something to numb the discomfort. If people are really in deep they could be tied into drugs sales/ other criminal activity. If they are caught trying to escape, if they owe money or someone thinks they owe them, they get a target in their heads. The often are forced to participate in illegal activities to stay alive or feed their addiction (street drugs). It’s kinda scary when you dive into it. There was a lot I was ignorant to even when I thought I understood. It’s a dark world out there but we all have the power to try to make it better. Little by little. Day by day.

@@grapefanta5975it really depends. You can try to check yourself into a rehab, you can get set up with a Suboxone doctor they make you go through therapy there and will determine if you need to have inpatient treatment, they usually get you in pretty quickly according to my brother, even when my mom went there for the pain side of the Suboxone clinic not the addiction they got her in quickly but you can always try talking to your doctor. Unfortunately so many are incredibly judgemental and worry more about saving their own ass than helping you. The worst think you can do is go buy from the Streets tho. Obviously yeah it's better than dying to do withdrawals but trying to get help should be the first option. @ZijnShayatanica 3 месяца назад

@@grapefanta5975That's a complicated question, as it depends on the addict & what steps they're ready to take... I'm not an expert, but I've known a few people w/ addictions throughout my life.
Largely, if it isn't someone in your life, just treat them w/ kindness, but mind your business. Addicts are well aware of rehab centres, psychiatrists, Methadone clinics, etc. If they were ready to go & had the resources, you can safely assume they know where they can go to take the first step.
If it's someone IN your life & they're not ready to quit, you unfortunately can't make them... But maybe you can help by being supportive of them getting treatment for other mental health issues, since those always pre-empt addiction. If they hurt you, set boundaries & stick to them, but don't lash out - it won't suddenly click for them to change because they're getting yelled at. If they're ready... Maybe vet a few places to make sure they're legit. Spend time w/ them so they're less isolated & less likely to hang out w/ their drug connections. And don't be surprised if they relapse; sobriety is not linear & they should have the chance to try again.
That's just my cursory input. It's an illness that is well out of a loved one's ability to fix or do damage control on... But support goes a long way, if there is still a bridge that hasn't been burnt all the way through.

Yeah, it's really important to have a good relationship w/ your pharmacy when you're on a controlled medication. I've had a Dr accidentally screw up my usual pain RX [1x/day instead of 3x/day]... If I wasn't known by my pharmacy, I could have gotten the "the Dr is right & you're just upset they're reducing your dose" or flagged for drug-seeking behaviour. But they actually contacted my Dr's office for a corrected RX & they received & filled it. I'm eternally grateful to have pharmacists that do their jobs well & stay in their lane by not judging my Dr's decisions for my healthcare. Do I love being on such stigmatized & potentially dangerous meds? No, but I have a life to live & I can't live it when I'm in constant pain, so I'm going to do what I can to thrive as much as is possible. I wouldn't be able to cook meals or do my PT if I wasn't on pain meds.

I also have CRPS, I was fortunate enough to get into a special rehabilitation program got the condition when I was 17-18. It was the hardest program I’ve ever done. A whole team of doctors, three types of counselors, occupational and physical therapy, art therapy, and a tutor for school, plus a bunch of nurses making me do stuff with exercise and desensitization. It was rough. But painkillers don’t work well for this condition so forcing blood flow and desensitizing nerves to reset the pain signals as best as possible was good. Unfortunately because it’s impossible to keep up that level of work all the time I did have a relapse but at least now I know how to control it better when it flares up. Mine is full body and it sucks. My teeth can’t be desensitized so idk wtf to do about that.
Sorry for rambling I don’t get to talk to a lot of others who get what this condition is.

I just went out of state to visit my daughter and the hoops I had to go through to get my controlled substances refilled was stressful and ridiculous! You cannot die from opiate withdrawal but obviously it’s not a good idea to do it completely alone because you can definitely die from things like dehydration if you aren’t able to keep water down or get yourself something to drink. I just think it’s important to inform people that opiate withdrawals can‘t be deadly when done under the right conditions. Nothing I‘m saying is meant to minimize the hell withdrawals are tho and I‘m sorry that your friend/ acquaintance had to pass like that.

Please, do a little more research before you incorrectly educate people. People die all the time from strokes, high blood pressure, heart attacks and other serious side effects of withdrawal if they aren’t closely monitored by a physician and their symptoms treated. @@AshleyKopituk I guess your comment is meant for me… I had a seizure going into opioid withdrawal not even that long ago and multiple doctors (you know experts) have told me that they aren’t deadly. I know that things can happen that could eventually lead to death like dehydration (that’s why I said that I would never recommend to do it alone - I don’t take this lightly and I know from personal experience how bad it can get) but the withdrawal from opiates/ opioids itself isn’t deadly. To me that is a massive relief (especially after I‘ve had the seizure) but I guess some people would rather spread horror stories🤷🏻‍♀️

In Australia we don't even have a distinction between a refill and a prescription, I didn't realise there was a difference until I read your comment. Here we just have "repeats" that are authorised per prescription. Say you get a prescription that has 30 days worth of medication, your doctor could add "3 repeats" to that prescription, meaning you can get your medication dispensed again after 28 days (sometimes sooner, depending on the medication) 3 more times before needing to see your doctor again.

Getting pain meds became such a PITA, my doctor would only give me 15 days worth at a time, and wanted me to take a drug test for every script, to make sure I was taking them and not selling them. That’s great and all, but the drug test was $150, and insurance wouldn’t cover it because it wasn’t “medically necessary”. I finally just learned to live with the pain. Sometimes it will get so bad that I need to go to the ER to make sure I’m not about to paralyze myself. Every time I’ve gone in it’s not been life threatening, but the ER docs always look at the CT scans and wonder how I’m walking, and ask me what I want for the pain. I just decline meds now, they give me just enough that I quit hurting for a couple of days and feel normal, but then have to learn how to deal with the pain all over again once the script runs out.

It got to the point where i would have to print my own PA from the DR office just to keep them from giving me crap about it. Im not saying all places are like that but if you think for 1 second that there isnt a biased standard when it comes to younger people and ANY schedules drugs you are lying. I went to the same place for 10 years and never had a problem until then. I eventually switched to a local mom and pop place and was treated so respectful and like a human being. I literally broke down in tears. The lady behind the counter gave me a big hug and told me no one should be made to feel that way. Ita not thier place to judge whose doing right or not. I been going to the small pharmacy every since. Even years later after i no longer to any kind of medications. Just the occasional iron pick up or antibiotics.

Pharma lady you have no idea why i am on this med nor are you privy to my care plan. I hate. Hate questioned and looked at like a criminal for getting my rx’d med that require to keep the pain of RA ripping apart my joints and disfiguring me that i have had since childhood. The laws and reqs change every month and now that the medication is working and i can walk a little so i can travel i have to be back every month at the same time to get this med because you can’t change pharmacies within my own hometown much less out of state or country. 35yrs of different meds failing now i have one that works and im treated like poo my the professionals who are supposed to help fill the meds that do work
Yes its a rant im frustrated. Talked to docs and legislators re these concerns and i get shrugs. Bad apples ruined life, medical care, access to medication for all of us.

Can’t help but feel for pharmacists after watching that video. (I’m not talking about the pharmacist in the film, as it’s a shitty representation) I know it’s just a movie, but it definitely evokes an experience I’m sure a lot of people have had working in healthcare. You wouldn’t believe the amount of abuse/vitriol you have to just shrug off from patients on a day to day process. You get demeaned every day by patients who don’t know how the healthcare system works, yelled at for things that aren’t in your control and of course, screamed and cursed at and just treated like a not a human being when you tell someone they need a prescription for narcotics, to name a few.
Pain is a beast of an emotion and physical feeling, and I don’t wish it on anyone. As healthcare workers it’s our job to empathize with patients and do what we were trained to do. But those micro aggressions and sometimes even full out abuse add up over time. I’ve seen too many people burn out, depressed and suicidal working in this field. I’m not saying people should stop advocating for themselves - by all means, please do. The healthcare system is so frustrating to deal with and it’s so important to stand up for yourself and increase our healthcare literacy. But it’s never right to abuse the healthcare workers who are just trying their best to do what they can from within our broken system. I’m talking about pharmacists, nurses, techs, receptionists, therapists and so much more. (For real, you wouldn’t believe the stupid things some doctors prescribe, pharmacists are literal life savers with their knowledge of contraindications)
My point is, please don’t see your everyday pharmacists, clinic staff etc as your enemy. If they’re straight out refusing to do something for you, there’s probably a good reason. A pharmacist literally cannot give you that medication you’re not authorized to take. They will lose their job, and means of supporting themselves. If something doesn’t make sense to you, it’s your right to question it. But please don’t resort to the immediate abuse that I’ve seen too many workers have to endure. Oldest rule in the book - kindness begets kindness. Not everyone you’re kind to will be kind back to you - but you sure as hell get better results when you treat people with respect.
Sorry for the random internet paragraph guys - stay cool my internet peeps.
TLDR; don’t cuss at your pharmacists, they’re people too.
(P.S. - Talk to your local municipalities and representatives - you’d be surprised at the amount of impact a small group of people can make)

“if they’re refusing to do something, there’s probably a good reason.”
-stupid, bs chain pharmacy rules (walgreens, cvs, etc) that aren’t the case at most pharmacies
      -personal bias
are the top two reasons i’ve experienced.
like when walgreens lies and says, “it’s against the law to discuss whether the pharmacy has a particular medication in stock,” even though there’s a national shortage of that medication, and it can be very difficult to find.. and i shouldn’t have to spend my days driving around looking for a pharmacy that has them. also, it’s not against the law. it’s against Walgreens policy, and it’s a stupid policy. if enough people complain to the techs and pharmacists, perhaps they will step up to the people above them and say, “exactly what does this rule accomplish, except sending business to our competitors who will answer the question over the phone?”
but seriously, i’ll be nice when they stop lying. that seems like a fair deal.
ps: i found an amazing mom and pop pharmacy that i go to now for years, and they have been incredible. they are kind and honest, and so i kind and appreciative. imagine that. hehe.

@@jillybeangaming Hi, I can totally understand your frustration with situations like that, and I’m sorry you’ve had bad experiences with pharmacies in the past. Seems like you have more of a problem with the chain stores themselves - which is not who I’m defending here. I assume Walgreens is a ?grocery store? (Correct me if I’m wrong, I’m not familiar with American stores) that contains a pharmacy? I can’t speak for everyone as I only have my experience here in the Canadian healthcare system, however again it seems like we’re debating about a systemic problem with larger corporations, big pharma and pharmacological companies, which I 100% agree exists. Their frankly absurd and money hungry policies are a pain in the butt to deal with for the average Joe and genuinely horrifying for people who are dependant on life supporting medications. From the old to the young, everyone is affected by this.
Heck, just take a look at Novo Nordisk and the international shortages of diabetic medications we’ve had for years now - Hollywood actors pay thousands to get Ozempic and all its clones (Rybelsus, Wegovy etc) whereas millions of diabetic patients struggle to get their monthly supply. Novo Nordisk made a ridiculous $18 billion last year!!!!! That’s an insane profit margin - considering it takes less than $5 to make, compared to the US listing price which is around $1000.
However, my point was that regardless of your feelings towards the larger systemic issues at hand, healthcare workers are a cornerstone of our society and don’t deserve to have your frustrations directed towards them. I’m not saying to stop advocating for yourself - I can see you’ve already done well by going to a pharmacy that works great for you. But at the end of the day, a pharmacist doesn’t control a chain store’s awful policies. You don’t get results by complaining to and harassing pharmacy workers - they just end up quitting and chain stores still win. Corporations will never stop doing something that benefits them unless people actively boycott and make it unprofitable.

Im sure its so much worse thab all the medical abuse and neglect patients go through who have no choice but to depend on the medical system because the only alternative is street drugs. How do you think it makes all the patients feel? Its like a firefighter being scared of fires. Youre putting your life at risk in any job you do, just in different ways. Im sure cashiers and mcdonalds workers get the same amount of verbal abuse, and they work for minimum wage. In my 22 year old mind habit and addiction were 2 words that didn’t relate. Well 5 years go by and I can’t quit these pills without feeling like I wanted to crawl out of my skin. Being a chronic pain patient can be so difficult. Not all of us are addicts. I've had pharmacists hand me similar pamphlets along with my schedule 2 meds. I've got an incomplete spinal cord injury and survived a septic MRSA infection that ate into my spinal bones and got into my spinal fluid. I take just enough morphine to keep me from constantly crying curled up in a little ball.
Addiction is a hell of a disease. It destroys everything in your life, including you. I have a family history of addiction. Thankfully I don't have the urge to over use my meds.
