Great video and Thanks for the shout! Much appreciated! It does indeed take tires about 2-3 laps to come into their own in AMS2. That's a terrifically informative video. AMS2 was a real handful, and even though the AI in Assetto Corsa was a little wild, it had the white knuckle desperation that real races sometimes do when drivers have their elbows out. Great video!

Why would it be difficult to control? It's got low power, massive tread width split rear to front and a lot of front roll stiffness bias. I've made an RSR 3.0 physics model and it came out pretty easy to drive. Can't really make it "difficult" without making up some stuff.

That was another in a long line of very enjoyable GPLaps videos. I love the thumbnail. Both GTR2 and AC in their modded versions look, sound and drive very satisfyingly. Simracers are lucky to have such a vibrant modding community. As for AMS2, it was interesting to see the difference in the Porsche's handling on the first and last laps - the setup, tyre and brake temperatures are absolutely crucial to enjoying the sim. However, Reiza's UI doesn't yet emphaise the importance of the car setup and FFB options. The sim is a work in progress - but it is progressing. I'm glad I could help you in a small way with AMS2 but Steelcast27 deserves the bulk of the credit. Here's to the next video!
Its good to make comparison videos of the same cars in different sims. RF2, AC (75 mod) and AMS2 you can do the BT44. For the Lotus 79 the 79 mod in RF2 and RSS 79 car in AC and AMS2 Lotus 79.. All these sims have a variant of the Lotus 49 or 67 car mod so take your pick :)
Great stuff! my first ventures into the GT cars was GT Legends back in the day and it was so much fun, you could also drive the Porsche and Corvette there around Donington, but older models.
I've just jumped back into GTR2 after a very long absence having been inspired by this channel and boy what a pleasant surprise. It looks and feels great and so much fun. Much easier on my aging computer also, allowing big fields of cars compared to AC.
Loving all of the 3 sims in this video. I really like the head movement in gtr2. For me that feels like driving a real car. Really missing the driving school of GTR2 in modern sims. The handling in AMS2 looked weird while you had cold tires. As the tires were up to temperature i saw no big difference in the handling compared to the other sims. Really nice.
I've always enjoyed your interesting and informative videos. All Sims have pros and cons. How do you remember all of the corner names on all of the tracks. Impressive , Thanks.
I think maybe there's more exaggerated camera shake in AMS2, and then there's just something about the graphics, that just makes that one perhaps look more arcade-y next to AC particularly. GTR2 just looks like it has older graphics. I would really like to see a Classic Nurburgring that actually doesn't have the Hohenrain Chicane, which didn't exist prior to 1967. I'm guessing somebody kind of freaked out when they saw how much faster the 3.0-liter F1 cars were in 1966.
Excellent video, thank you. AMS2's turn-in understeer & snap oversteer seems to be present, to some degree, in the real life 'modern historic' RSR. This video (Leh Keen at Le Mans) shows that pretty clearly: ruclips.net/video/lykziXDfQVo/видео.html (Would I want a roll cage tube located at kneecap level? No, I would not)
Part of the reason the AC version probably feels like a more detailed/refined version of the P&G version is because the physics were done by the same person.
I personally find the rear end of the Porsche a bit TOO loose in AMS2, spend the entire race chasing it - Could probably dial it out with setup as you said but I've not really had the chance to dive into it too much. In terms of driving feel I think the AC version is my favourite where being able to push it and not be scared of spinning off the track every corner is concerned, regardless of how 'realistic' that is. As far as actual racing goes, AMS2 is my favourite at the moment, especially with the inclusion of a lot of the vintage cars and tracks (though it would be nice to have the car classes filled out a bit more), a lot of nice things we haven't seen as stock content in sims for a long time - Though that said I've been having an absolute blast with the various 'legends' mods for AC, the GP, TC and GT versions are all brilliant and a ton of fun.
"In terms of driving feel I think the AC version is my favourite where being able to push it and not be scared of spinning off the track every corner is concerned, regardless of how 'realistic' that is." I think it's quite realistic. Cars don't feel like driving on ice, or completely driven off tyres, like in iRacing. If you've ever been Karting, or watched some real life motorsport onboards, there's a lot of racing on the limit, while in iRacing, you need to avoid the limt at all costs, otherwise, you're simply... gone. That's way more realistic in AC, or ACC. And, in basically any other racing sim as well, rFactor 2, Richard Burns Rally, GTR 2, Race 07, you name it. Only one sim has that completely shitty tyre model.
Was wondering if you could do a video on the fclassic generation 3 class, since you're a F1 fan like myself. They are based off the 91 season as you'll notice. Even knowing that rFactor2 has a 91 F1 mod, but I think they feel really good in automobilista 2.
Cool comparison. GTR2 and AC hold up pretty well. Not a huge fan of the style of AMS2, looks a bit flat and lifeless. The preview standing shot almost looks like a cartoon or toy car, and the movements of the AI car seems to be really rigid? No small movements at the rear or through the suspension like in the other sims that add a lot of authenticity, can barely even see the cars pitching in on the brakes. Pretty sure PC2 had the same "issue" iirc so maybe a limitation of the engine?
I have the exact opposite issue with the Assetto Corsa AI 🙃 they always seem to have perfect last second braking and seem to make so few mistakes. But then they'll do random crap like swerve on a straight 😂
Assetto Corsa's AI is such a fatal flaw. All those brilliant track and car combinations, but once you stick some AI on the track it's often a nightmare. The worst is when a car wrecks, but rather than going back to the pits it crawls around at 20mph and checks up all the other AI who can't cope with a slower vehicle in front; see multiclass racing for more of the same problem.
Not sure if you've mentioned this in a past video, but... what graphics settings are you using for GTR2? Seriously, for a 17 year old sim it looks incredible, and if I ever fire it up again I want it looking like this! I will mention I stopped playing GTR 2 because of the AI. The feel of driving on the game is incredible for something released in 2005, but on longer races the AI gets quite a bit slower, especially once they catch back markers (probably a setting I have to change to fix that). As far as aggression, however, they race as well as the best AI I've seen in any sim. Assetto Corsa is my most played sim. I mean, once you get graphics mods like Sol and CSP, run everything through Content Manager, and start getting all the modded cars and tracks on offer for the game (The Shutoko Revival Project is the whole.reason. I bought the game), it's longevity becomes apparent. I think if you can't decide which sim to get or don't want to build a collection, AC is the only one you need. AC does have an issue when it comes to AI. I think it goes with why the car in front of you went off the track in that one turn every lap, and it's something a lot of developers seem to struggle with in sims; the AI has no clue how to act around the player. It makes for some frustrating sessions when trying to dial in car setups in a racing scenario. I don't own AMS, but first impressions the in-car noises sound far better than the other 2 sims. Almost gives me R3E vibes, although I think the sound of the Corvettes would be quite a bit louder around your car. The AI seems to be a lot more realistic, and that's appealing. I've held off buying AMS 2 but I might have to make the purchase after seeing this.
now I know why everyone is complaining at the AI in AC... if you run with em on some mod tracks and modded cars the AI line is not optimized. I never race on Donington, so did not realized it at all. Not happening on Kunos tracks.
