  • In this video we are upcycling an old washing machine and making a multi purpose rotary machine that can do green sand mulling, rotary welding, 360 degree photography, and act as a potters wheel.
The machine we make uses an Arduino PID closed loop motor control system to govern the speed of the universal washing machine motor. You can watch the video on that specifically here: • How to reuse Washing M...
In this part we mainly focus on the frame of the machine and making a rotating table. We use the old washing machine bearings and spider but mount them on top. A laminated scrap plywood platter is made to act as the rotary table.
In other videos in this series we will add the control panel and closed loop Arduino speed system, a microwave timer, the sand bucket and ploughs to make the green sand muller.
The rotary recording table for 360 degree photography will require slow consistent speed and a plane white backdrop.
To make it work as a Rotary welding table we will have to add a metal plate and an earthing slip ring (not sure on the details of how I will do this - any tips welcome).
Here's Luckygen1001's video on about the green sand mixer I mentioned: • Sand mixer and mixing ...

Fun Fact: Washing machine spider arms are designed to corrode and fail, they are the reason modern washing machines need replacing about 5-8 years. Most of the other parts are good for at least 4 times the cycles as the spider. The spider is also the part hardest to find and most expensive.

New to your channel and enjoy the vids! As for the Dremel snobs; PHFFT! Tell them to "STF-up and eat your omelet. Busy breaking eggs here". I made an airlift out of an old semi-truck air adjustable seat (to work on my motorcycles). would have been scrap otherwise.

Not suggesting you do so however many self sufficiency channels use an old washing machine as a water turbine and produce electricity for their off grid systems.

    • @FloweringElbow
      @FloweringElbow  5 лет назад +6

I used an Arduino running PID code to trigger an optoisolated triac.
If I was doing it again I wouldn't go so complicated and would do a simple AC diac - triac circuit... I will probably end up doing a whole video on the speed control - it's a big subject.

Why couldn't you have lined the washer drum with sheet metal and used it as the sand drum?

    • @FloweringElbow

Nice idea, I did consider it, but I remember thinking the sand might stick to the outsides and/or be too heavy to get moving...?

Hey friends! I have finished this off as a green sand muller and 360 photography machine (I just need to edit the video), but haven't finished the welding rotary table part yet. If any of you have tips on converting this to be used as such I would love to here them. Especially I could do with some ideas on how to get the welder's earth onto the rotating table, using something cheap or free. Thanks for watching. Peace, Bongo.

Metal work surface, steel, with copper pipe rubbing along edge that has ground wire attached? Depending on how thick work surface is copper pipe could be rubbing on edge or flat top..

Is there a reason that a dryer couldn't be used instead of a washer? They run at a constant speed and if that speed wasn't what was need a different size pulley could be used.

I like how you reuse the cabinet. Instead of relocating the drive from the back to the top, could one just lay the cabinet on its back and mount the round wooden base to the drum? Alternatively, lay the cabinet face down and mount the wooden base to the spider to avoid the wobbling drum?
