I mean the second they fell into that trap they were in checkmate just because they had the whole pass covered with archers meaning regardless of what Thors did they could easily just kill everybody in the two ships and no one could do anything about it. That's why Thors had to force that duel and come to an agreement with Askeladd because otherwise everyone would've just died once Askeladd ordered it
Thors doesn't have a choice, askellad was serious of making him leader but thors think that floki might frame him for some conspiracy to the king making him the enemy and even attacking Iceland that's why he sacrifice his life
I think askeladd wasn’t joking when he was asking thors to become their leider. But because thors didn’t react he said he was joking to not lose face in front of his men.
this shows that askelaad actually feels bad for killing Thors. He wan'ts to give throkell a chance for revenge because thors was such a magnicent warrior.
