  • Video #413: Making it quick, simple and easy for you to come up with your own custom color palette blends... More Info: www.beadsandbea... Polymer Clay Tutor.
    Topics Covered In This Video:
    * This color mixing trick is something that I call the 'Color Plus 1 Method'. I use it all the time... and you can too.
    * Color mixing polymer clay can be intimidating for a lot of people, but this trick will make it a lot easier to come up with your own custom color palette.
    * I show some colors from the Premo color line, that don't go together very nicely straight from the pack.. Fuchsia, Orange, Cadmium Yellow, Green and Raw Sienna.
    * If I take those same colors and 'Plus 1' them with some Gold or Black or any other color, I can make a really neat color palette that pulls everything to together in an aesthetically pleasing way.
    * I demonstrate mixing 1 part of the base color Fuchsia and 1/2 part Gold clay to make a beautiful iridescent Raspberry color. I then continue down the line, mixing 1 part color and 1/2 part Gold to each of the colors. Watch the video to see how simple this technique is to do.
    * Mixing my plus one color (in this case it was a 1/2 part Gold), to each of the base colors I want to use, creates a new color palette that flows together, because each of them have the underlying Gold color in common.
    * I show the same formula being done with the same base colors (Fuchsia, Orange, Cad. Yellow, Green, Raw Sienna) mixed with a Plus 1 color of 1/8 part Black. Because Black is such a strong color, I chose to much less in the mix, than I did the Gold.
    * You can use this 'Plus 1' color mixing trick for making palettes with any colors that you choose. You will have to experiment with amounts of the Plus 1 color you would like to add, because each color has a different strength.
    * If you liked this video please click the "Thumbs Up" button... and don't forget to subscribe to my channel so you don't miss out on all of the new videos that I publish once or twice a week... each and every week.

Just a beginner here, and always struggle with colors and mixing. This was SO helpful! Thank you! In one of the recent comments said you moved from this platform to FB. If so, what is your fb page so I can come follow?

Oh, I am so glad to hear the video helped you, Lisa! I haven't moved from this platform... we have just temporarily stopped making new videos while we are upgrading our website and business model. unfortunately, it has taken us far too long to get back here. Though it shouldn't be too long now before we start filming for RUclips again. In the meantime, we have been doing a weekly LIVE Q&A Broadcast on Facebook. It is on Wednesday's at 12:00 NOON Pacific Time on our Faceboobk Page facebook.com/polymerclay Hope to see you there!

Hi bubbles26, I use Premo Polymer Clay and they actually have a color called Raw Sienna that I would use if I wanted to mix my own Ecru color. But they also have a color named Ecru, so I would just use that. Raw Sienna is a medium brown color with a yellow under tone. Kind of a dark Caramel color. If you are using another brand of clay you will have to experiment until you get the color you desire. Good luck!

  • @PolymerClayTutor
    @PolymerClayTutor  11 лет назад

Hi bubbles26, yes I do know how to mix ecru clay. Premo polymer clay already carries a nice Ecru but if you want to mix it yourself, it starts with a base of white and you add tiny amounts of raw sienna until you get the color you want. Are you getting my free color recipes? Go to my blog (link in description) and sign up to my Newsletter and you'll get free color recipes every week. Thanks for commenting!

Hi alecitalindis, I haven't really used paint to color raw polymer clay, but I have heard others do it. In theory, oil based paints would work better for tinting raw clay than acrylics because it would mix better with the oils in the polymer. But I would need to do further testing to be sure of that. Why don't you try a few different things on some tiny bits of clay yourself? You may just have your answer quicker that way! Good luck!

To get a metallic shade i added some gold mica powder..results were good :)

Yes I'd like to see more colour mixing, especially if you can improve a colour like the Sculpey III 'Tranquility' I just bought this and it looks nothing like the picture of it - instead of a light bright electric blue, I have a dirty slightly blueish grey mud colour - not a colour I'd want to see in ANYTHING! What can I do about it?
Oh yes, I'd also like to know if you can mix together Fimo and Premo or Fimo and SculpeyIII? and if you do what does that do to
    a) the colours? and
    b) the time or temperature you bake it at?

Yes more.. becuz I'm intimidated by adding too much and not wanting to waste (on a budget)... especially when you want to accomplish a certain color and have to work with what colors you have... for example I bought the bright set... and wanted to make feather cane feathers earrings for my niece with colors she likes soft pink and peachy and teal and her sister likes the bright colors.. and I can't find a color mixing chart for sculpey bright color set of clay.. it would be nice to have a chart for us beginners without experimenting & wasting.. from putting too much of a color.. thanx for this video just wish I had found it before spending 2 days looking for a good method to mixing colors .. 😉

A Big YES, I would love more color blending ideas. Color blending is not my best suite. Learning how to create my own color line would be the icing on my cake. I'm a seed bead beader to match my bead collection would be awesome.

I love ,LOVE, mixing colors. .. cuz there is just NOT enough colors in the world. :-)... never thought to use gold as a common base color. .. I have used pearl in everything. . Very similar results. .. inspired to play with silver now too!! Your tutorials are very informative, well defined, and of course. .. inspirational! !!!

I seem to make clumps of ugly dark colors and have tons of it, what can I do with it? I don't want to waste the clay but it's really ugly mix and dark.

I only buy the three primary colours plus black and white. I use he same method as I use to make matching size beads, that is to make one size circles in the clay and just make a note of how much colour or size I need to mix for either size or colour. Thank you for your posts, very intertsing.

yes I would. I am a beginner and I am finding too many videos on how to. I just want one that can shew me from beginning to the end including mixing colors. What clay do you use. I really like how you explain, but I would like a ful video split in different ones if you like but beginning one to the end.
