Family Living In RV Without Water Survives Rural Homelessness

  • In rural Missouri, Kathleen, her son, and her grandson live in a broken-down RV without water or electricity for two years since their house burned down. Just a week ago, they finally had electricity installed. This is what rural homelessness looks like-a growing crisis in America. As you go down country roads, you’ll see RV after RV, many occupied by people just like Kathleen and her family.
Kathleen shares, “It was pretty rough. Living in an RV, as anyone can imagine, it's not meant to live. So you've got small, contained areas. With three people, we get on each other's nerves. The water's been the hardest to live without.”
Her grandson, Josiah, who goes to school daily, helps his Bama and tries to find joy despite the harsh conditions. He says, “I play baseball and cut the grass. I have a dirt bike.”
Rural homelessness continues to grow at an alarming rate. Unlike urban areas, rural communities often lack the essential support services needed to help people in such dire situations. The scarcity of resources exacerbates the struggles of families like Kathleen's, leaving them without access to basic necessities or proper assistance.
Kathleen reflects on the difficulty of living without basic needs, “The next time you go to your faucet or flush the toilet, just think if you didn't have that because I didn't understand it.” Their living conditions highlight the severe impact of poverty, demonstrating that no one should have to endure such hardships in today's world.
Join us as we delve into Kathleen's story and shine a light on the unseen crisis of rural homelessness in America.

    About Invisible People
There is a direct correlation between what the general public perceives about homelessness and how it affects policy change. Most people blame homelessness on the person experiencing it instead of the increasing shortage of affordable housing, lack of employment, childhood trauma, lack of a living wage, or the countless reasons that put a person at risk. This lack of understanding creates a dangerous cycle of misperception that leads to the inability to effectively address the root causes of homelessness.
We imagine a world where everyone has a place to call home. Each day, we work to fight homelessness by giving it a face while educating individuals about the systemic issues that contribute to its existence. Through storytelling, education, news, and activism, we are changing the narrative on homelessness.
This isn’t just talk. Our groundbreaking educational content reaches millions of people every month. Our real and unfiltered stories of homelessness shatter stereotypes, demand attention and deliver a call-to-action that is being answered by governments, major brands, nonprofit organizations, and everyday citizens just like you.
However, there is more work to be done on the road ahead. Homelessness is undoubtedly one of our biggest societal issues today and will only continue to grow if we don’t take action now.
Invisible People is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit dedicated to educating the public about homelessness through innovative storytelling, news, and advocacy. Since our launch in 2008, Invisible People has become a pioneer and trusted resource for inspiring action and raising awareness in support of advocacy, policy change and thoughtful dialogue around poverty in North America and the United Kingdom.

My husband and I have helped the homeless as well. We've lived on our "farm" for 36 years and I've lost count at how many families we've helped by having many of these families living with us for 6-months while these families are getting back on their feet. None of these families have paid "rent" but....we've put them to work around the farm. Fixing fences, building sheds, a barn, 2- garages, gardening, canning, etc etc etc These are all things that have helped them and have helped us. Much of the money they would have had to come up with, many were able to save a down payment for a home of their own in 6-months time. Right now, we have a family living in our 24 foot camper with a functional bathroom and tiny kitchen where they can do their own cooking and clean up.

She has a lot on her. Mentally ill son and grandson to care for as she ages. I can’t imagine. The government hands out so much to people walking across our border and she is doing the government’s job caring for family ,on her own , way past what she should have. Social services is a nightmare for good people. Only the criminal and the cunning take advantage of it. My pipes froze 5 years ago , luckily I had a cottage next to it. The process of getting water needs money and honest help, very complex in today’s world. Most repair companies are organized extortion rackets , it used to be easy to hire a plumber , not anymore.

I hate that someone else has went through this.
I lost my house due to fire recently (total loss and severely under-insured).
Lived in a small (16ft) borrowed camper for a bit.
Now I've been living in the 1 room that's almost done. I'm hoping one day maybe I'll have a house again.
I felt this to my core, because I am living it too.
It truly is a living nightmare.

*gone* through this. (Not went through this). Horrible circumstances for you sorry to hear it. We only have cold water (it's been ages). We have to get money together for a hot water tank and have about 4 things to fix in the bathroom too so a plumber will cost so much. It will deplete our small savings. Jesus is good though and has done other great things over time. Our house is really rough and wet and needs 1000s in work though inside and out. I always pray no calamity strikes. I'm frozen and live in constant mouldy dampness. Life is very hard for so many these days. It's good you can keep dry. (We got half our house knocked out and rebuilt inside nearly 10 years ago but I'm trusting in the Lord for the other half....a way bigger inside and outside job).

I feel her pain. We lived for 3 years at a small lake cabin with no running water. We did have electric and an old phone. We had a sump pump which pumped up water from the lake for washing and doing dishes. We brought in our own drinking water. Heat was 2 wood stoves and a wood burning fireplace. In winter, the hose would freeze up. This can be very challenging. I hope this lady and her family receive the help they deserve.

I am sorry for her loss, but she had forced insurance and that is three times more than regular insurance. It won’t cover more than what is owed to the bank. She didn’t help her situation and now she will struggle. We must pull our boot straps up and get things done. I am an old woman, have a complete fused spine, arthritis and other issues. I am a survivor and so many just sit back and hold out there hands. It doesn’t work that way.

How do they handle basic every day hygiene stuff, like brushing teeth? Most RVs at least have a water holding tank that can be pumped through a basin inside for washing up. Yes you have to haul in outside water to fill the tank manually, which can be challenging, but doable with access to public pumps. I really identify with this woman because I lived like this for three years. tbh I really enjoyed hauling water, it made me feel very strong and physically capable, even in my 40s. I also relate to the not-asking-for-help mentality. I'm glad she's open to it now. Ultimately they all need a secure home asap, but in the meantime, the water obstacle can be overcome if the RV has a pump system, and a small generator can be fairly cheap. Hope they at least have access to power now. Thank you for sharing their story. Rural homelessness is often forgotten or overlooked

    • @tabularasa
      @tabularasa 2 месяца назад +2

@@edie4321 Yes, the stated upkeep costs of the generator struck me as very odd, possibly wrong. That's why I suggested a small genny, because if their electrical needs are pretty minimal, they don't need very much wattage, and to be smart and economical it could be run only a couple hours in the morning, and a couple at night. There's no way that this would add up to 600 per month, if it's a small-ish economical genny. I know this first hand. I live in Washington State with some of the highest gas prices in the country, and my gasoline costs for the generator were around 50 per month, and this was when prices were spiking a few years ago. Missouri is more affordable than Washington. So, I don't know. I think there are solutions. But I empathize that she's kind of on her own to manage this and figure it out, if her son is ill and her grandson is just a kid.

We also converted a $21,000 shed into a 2 bedroom, 2 bathroom house on 5 acres. Electricity should be free for them to get set up with the electric company. We didn't have to pay anything to have them come set up something. She may have to purchase a pole..but sounds like she's close to a road, so I'm sure close to a pole. Call the electric company and see. But the rv is a home and she has that beautiful land...electricity and water would make a huge difference for them though. Kid is loving it there. Unfortunetly they re using him as a bait. She was probably told to ask for whatever since someone may feel sorry enough to do it.
But..she is on land. She has the campers. Kid is in school so fed. There are many ways around things.
4 pallets tied together make good compost bin to dump a bedside commode, kept in camper and dumped as needed. Get some kind of water catchment. Tarp, dinky shed with barrel/buckets. Put a sand point well in.
Heat could be small wood stove in RV, can be done safe.
Sponge baths. Charge phones in car. Plenty food doesn't need refrigerator.
Grandmas probably worried about grandson. Grown son needs to get more help and rehab himself to any extent possible.
Boy..3 bed 2 bath..Oh boy. Get community together build a little off grid cabin for kid and grandma..son can stay in rv.
I've been down this road. I'm an old lady. But I still do it and it could be done.

At least Josiah has a heathy place to run outside, play outside, be active, no screen addiction! Is the school district aware of their predicament? Any church could build a simple house that could be added onto in the future? Find a used mobile home with the basics? Electric, water, heater?

If they were involved in a church, the congregation would probably build them a small shed home. There are compost toilets if they can’t do a septic, but water should be around or a hand pump drilled to get water for use. If not a holding tank with water delivery when needed, a rainfall catchment. There are ways to do many things to survive and many of us may be forced to do these as times are getting tough. Christians help each other in times of need. People need to get back to asking Jesus and those who love him for assistance.
