    In hunting you cannot be afraid of your target. Because you can become the prey. At Ranch tournaments it always happens. Boys get used to shooting the FITA Card, when they have to shoot the little one target they get frustrated. You teach better than many instructors in America. Awesome shooting. Thanks.

    Great to have you explain it to us, I started practising at 35m and what you told me made sense, you only miss the target and then have to find the arrow . You either hit the target or you don't. there's nothing to fear about missing a small bag and having to walk over one step behind it and get your arrow.
    Fear is the mind killer, thanks Armin.

    From my motorcycle driving class: "you go where you look" if you look at the ditch, you'll be driving straight into it. If you think you will break your arrow on the metal pole that hold the target, well of course you will break your arrow on the metal pole that hold the target. Ask me how I know 😖

    Thanks for the tutorial I really like these. I'm one of the lucky ones I've never experienced target panic! They say it can break the best shooters. I come from a shooting back ground with firearms and have never experienced it. The closest I've come was playing 9 ball tournaments, and I found that after I got in a state of just you and the table all nervousness went away and you just play out the table. I'm thinking that's the same focus I use with my archery. I'm a much better pool player than archer though! Lol
    Thanks again Armin for all you do I really think these tutorials are very educating and would love to see more of them. Thank you for your time and great shooting by the way!😁😁😁🎯🎯🎯🎯🎯

    Armin, you just became 1000 times more awesome when you referred to the nonsense as fear mongering, hearing such awareness is encouraging! Now you need a legion of archers for liberty ;)
    You also recently inspired me to take up archery; I have ordered the larger model Turkish recurve from AF Archery. I always loved archery in films growing up (elves in LOTR of course!) now I can live it for myself! 🤗

    I find that when I focus on the target and nothing else, I am most accurate. But to be able to shoot like this your form needs to be good, so that you don't think about it.
    This is why I most enjoy shooting at candle flames and swinging targets or something similar. Because it grabs your attention more than a paper target with rings.

      its the old thing of aim small miss small. on field file targets that are weathered and blend into the background its easy to just aim at the whole thing at distance. Accuracy is poor. Its takes mental discipline to pick a spot. I find if you shoot after someone has put in a good arrow its no coincidence that Ill place arrows rightn on theirs even though I am.not trying to do so

    For me, the most difficult panic to over come is when I have had a string of bad shots on a field course. My mind finds it hard to let go of the poor shot that went before, and I can repeat the same problem that led to the miss in the first place, because I cannot accept that the error is mine. Over analysis can be a killer, and you start to do weird shit from over-thinking rather than mindfulness. To stop the run, I break my stance, turn around with eyes closed, reorientate myself in the moment- sometimes it works. Fortunately my faiults are consistent, I always drift to the same bad habits in stress or tiredness, and I have to analyse for them if I have a bad run. My son and I spot for each other and its invariably lack of form, or poor grip when my shooting drops off. On a field course its easier to lose form compared to the range due to variability in shot, mind tricks of the terrain, or tiredness if I have been shooting all day with a heavy bow. As an archer its good to learn to be kind to your self, to stop beating yourself up for errors, but to recognise them and move on with a light heart. The good side is because confidence breeds success in archery once I am on a roll its almost impossible to miss- until I do.

      Zen in the art of archery, by Eugen herrigel. This book teaches some ways of thinking which I find quite helpful for me when I experience disparity over my bad volleys. I hope if you don't know of this book that you are able to get a copy. One of many good archery books!

      I also hope you no longer experience the frustration over previous shots, my issue is actually that I get to a state of mind where I don't care enough and it takes me a whole session of shooting to realize my mistakes after the fact. It's weird

    Solid words of wisdom, thank you Armin.
    Yes fears can be overcome danger always lurks as in your example.
    A dangerous circumstance can create fear.
    Putting oneself in that circumstance is stupid..having wisdom in that circumstance brings caution,patience and thought process of perhaps another way to maneuver around, through and overcome the danger.
    Always excellent shooting thank you.

    Like Byron Ferguson said: "The center of a volleyball is the same size as the center of a coin" so if you aim at the center, the size of the target doesn't matter because you aim for a point.

    • @mortenjacobsen5673
      @mortenjacobsen5673 4 года назад

      And thats exactly why the target panic had nothing to do with target panic, not the size, shape or size. The target can how ever be a trigger for timing, habit or impulses or teknuiqe

    Not having any targets myself and only a haybale with a stick on it for reference, anytime im given a target it makes everything much easier for me because i have a goal to shoot at and usually within 5 shots i can hit said target, i always relax alot more with a target, because what i place in front of me is usually the size if a key ring or thin stick. Aim small miss small

    Aaargh, I have commenting panic and had to re-write this. Lol.
    I think target panic starts when the archer starts to notice that there is technique involved. First we concentrate on aiming, then when we start developing our technique and we still try to concentrate on aiming. Then we go watch a million youtube videos and still concentrate on that damn aim. So the concentration tries to be in two or more places at the same time and usually it goes for aiming and that's not good. Because archery is largely a DIY-trade that might lead to quitting if you don't have guidance.
    I've heard so many times that instinctive archers are bad target archers and I think that's just not true. I think those people try so desperately to aim ("Burn a hole in the spot") that they get target panic and then try somehow to explain away the fear with e.g. "the bad target archer" analogy, even though the blame is on technique. Gap shooters and other technique aimers often get away from this for a longer period of time if they can shoot consistently, but usually the technique flaws start showing up sooner or later.
    I had target panic for shooting FITA cards and other targets that don't have a clear spot to aim at. I'm a bit short sighted so I can't really see the cross on a FITA-target card past 10m and glasses distorts the vision. I found that the reason for the panic was that I was concentrating on aiming. Once I learned that aiming should be a subconscious effort, the panic went away. Just watch it to keep it. This may seem counterintuitive to some, but the subconscious mind is a fantastic aimer. You can truly concentrate on only one thing at a time. Misses are mainly caused by technical flaws by the archer (bow torque (mediterranean), creeping, string plucking etc.) and not because of the lack of aiming. The concentration should be on building your form and increasing back tension. Those who concentrate on aiming, tend to shoulder pull and that leads to a sticky release. Later it leads to injuries.A good tip is to talk to yourself while shooting. Grip, elbow out, hook, draw the elbow back, keep pulling, keep pulling, keep pulling (...release) or something like that. Words are very powerful tools and keeps your concentration on the task.
    I'm so happy that I don't have target panic anymore and I'm waiting for my first hunting season this fall. Because traditional archery clubs/teachers are so rare where I live, I have mainly Armin, Joel Turner and Tom Clum Sr. to thank for that I'm still shooting and I probably will shoot til the day I die.
    I highly recommend for you who are reading this to invest in Solid Archery Mechanics and Controlled Process Shooting (Shot IQ), before buying another bow Armin just reviewed. Skill always wins over equipment. Tom's and Joel's stuff very well applicable to Armin's teachings. Joel Turner, who also shoots thumb, refers to Armin when people want learn thumb draw. I shoot a modern longbow (with a shelf) with thumb draw and use a modified khatra I figured out myself. Archery is amazing and has so many possibilities on how to shoot when you just have an open mind.
    This is a super important topic and slows many archers down. Always on point, Armin!

    Well also there are different types of target panic like if you have conditioned yourself to release at a shorter draw then when you try to draw fully it's suddenly stuck or you immediately release at the shorter one . My old friend and spiritual teacher John Hancock told me once that the first thing that would happen if you did away with all ...all your fear is that you would live forever and he honestly believed this and the man was fearless and never ever hesitated to do the right thing or come to the aid of someone even if the people harassing them were cops , he truly lived fearlessly and it wasn't disease or a gun that killed him it was just a stupid accident and I miss him every single day.

    The most common description of "target panic" I come across in western archery (but even more so in firearm training) is not exactly of a "mindset" nature or a "fear" - as you depicted (although that sure is an important topic) - but refers more to a specific experience of "flinching" - a subconscious micro-movement of muscles anticipating the force of the shot - and trying to unconsciously counteract it - which in effect disturbs the cleanliness and precision of the release... You see that especially with pistol shooting, where it's a real issue for people trying to pull the trigger without flinching the rest of the wrist in anticipation of the shot ...
    I understand that this type of "target panic" is an issue in european and especially olympic style of archery, where you want to keep maximum bow stability and minimum movement during release ...
    But then again ... what about khatra for example? Here after all you do want to consciously apply force to your bow hand and make the shot more "dynamic" right? Does that mean, that this "flinching" type of target panic is not an issue in eastern style archery?

  • @kayleigh8978
    @kayleigh8978 Год назад

    I don't have fear of the target. In 3D shooting I can go through my shot process, get the sight onto the killzone and slowly trigger the shot most of the time. If the target is a yellow circle my draw hand has a life if its own and I even missed the whole 120cm target at 20m today. Why. I could until April when I did some serious overthinking in preparation for a field tournament. After that I froze below the gold and "couldn't get it up", so to say. Any ideas to overcome that? My draw hand makes all kinds of involuntary movements that I cannot seem to control, only if I use the Can't Fire release trainer.
