The A. Lange & Söhne Grand Complication

- When the A. Lange & Söhne Grand Complication was first announced at SIHH 2013 it got the entire watch industry's attention -- as you would expect an extremely complex, 50mm diameter, $2.6 million watch to do -- though only a handful of people were able to actually see the watch in person. Large scale models and official press photos had to suffice for most. But a few weeks ago a prototype Grand Complication made its way to New York City and we sat down with CEO Wilhelm Schmid and Director of Product Development Anthony de Haas to get a closer look at exactly what this astounding watch means for the future of A. Lange & Söhne. Full story here: www.hodinkee.co...
I usually prefer simplicity over most things (especially regarding watches), but my god this is a beautiful watch.
Perfection. Absolute perfection!
Better than all these Royal Oak, AP, Dayjust, etc. ...
Pure Mechanical Beauty.
It used to be Patek Philippe but I think A. Lange und Soehne has been a torchbearer of ultimate luxury watches almost since they appeared on the scene. This "Grand Complication" is a terrific piece from the Dresden house.
Their minute repeater chimes aren't as in tune as you would find on the comparable Patek Philippe or Vacheron Constantin. I know it's a small and petty critique, but I don't expect compromise in the, "torchbearer of ultimate luxury watches."
What are you basing this on? Your opinion? A recording? You damn sure haven't seen it in person.
MrVoayer I think they are from neighbouring Glashütte
Not sure about Vacheron but Patek is known for its repeaters... Patek repeaters are the industry standard bar none in terms of chime timing, consistency, etc. I say this as a lange fan boy. Lange needs to improve it's repeaters and shrink their watches. Then they'll take the crown bar none.
@BackdriftNightfall I know. Like I said, I generally like lange better, but minute repeaters are the ultimate complication and so that is a big standard too.
Stunning watch. So aesthetically pleasing. Great camera work and stunning audio clarity as usual. Dear Santa....
I just witnessed pinnacle perfection. Lange & söhne hold the torch.
Perhaps the most beautiful watch ever made.
Gorgeous Time Piece. Quality and style is a 10.
An absolute masterpiece of watch making.
AMAZING WATCH! Excellent video. Congratulations to Lang & Sohne!
Lange is the one and only watch brand that keeps Patek up at night. Reality
out of this world.
such an MAGNIFICENT ENGINEERING WORK OR ART.
Pure horology! Please provide more datails on Lange & Sohne... Probably todays best watch maker.
look so stunning. i love this brand cause they look simple from the top but really complicated in the inside. going to work hard when i grow up to buy watches like this one
I may not be knowledgeable enough for this tier of watches, but damn. That is 1 hell of a beauty. Wish they would show us a little breakdown of the engineering inside but i guess that's classified.
What a mighty watch!
Beautiful.
A striking time similar to that in the Zeitwerk line in the 1815 or the Saxonia lines would be great.
Absolutely amazing🎯🎯🎯
Thanks for posting this. I just tossed my current collection in the trash due to embarrassment. This is an absolute work of art.
The service cost on these Grand Complications watches would be horrifying...
+Sturm 51 it's probably enough to send a small undeveloped country in to debt haha
+lolyermad lol It's funny because it's true. The watch itself costs more than some small propeller driven passenger planes. And countries like Kenya can't afford to buy one without going into more debt.
+Sturm 51 Every time you accidentally smack it into a door knob, it has to spend 6 months in Glashutte. That'll be 20,000 Euros please.
+Sturm 51 My dad used to repair watches. He would refuse working on so many watches because people would bring in junk thinking it was a quality product. Some watches he worked on were obsoleted so he had to make his own parts for them. I think there are very few good watchmakers left. He offered to train me several times but I was more interested in electronics so went that path. Looking back I wonder if I made the right choice.
Sky1 My grandfather was a watchmaker, i was always to young to understand and now I’m here sitting at 24 trying to teach myself basic watchmaking.. its a shame he passed away when I was too young start
Outstanding
It is in my dreams I see and find satisfying the concept of the most supreme movements in the world (A.Lange & Sohne), running in its case under an absolute vacuum I think it would shock the Swiss, even with their helium valve concept to realize the Germans have once again trumped them by using no atmosphere in their mechanisms, and proving their obvious superior genius and minimalist ethics.(No atmospheric friction at all to the escapement or movements within the watch) however small that atomic hinderance may be you can't beat German precision or exactitude in the Zenlike approach they take in their engineering, and style.
I was going to sell my heart to buy one until I realized I would die without it.
Peter Mitchell You can live without a watch!
A Lange have set the bar, now leaving the rest to answer it.
Great pice! ... But why to cover the colum weel like Patek?
wonderfull
This is watch is more beautiful than a Patek repeater amazing.
amazing
is there a name for that "fractional second" thing at the bottom of the face?
Amazing! :)
Amazing
...just in case you don't know what month it is ...
Im sorry patek, you've worn the crown for oh so long….. but Lange wheres it now
Nope pp forever
Constantin Andreae Consider the fact that for all practical purposes this manufacture is only 20 years old. What they have accomplished in 20 years is astounding. The patents from the integration of both digital and mechanical elements in the zeitwork caliber. The fuse and chain transmission in their pour le metre. The terraluna and its celestial/orbital movement. And of course this grand complication. For me the most important part of a high end mechanical watch is the movement. For a movement to be truly spectacular it obviously has to be in-house, and extremely well. But for a watch to be over 20K it has to be as unique and artistic as the dial. No other manufacture makes as artistic a movement as lange. Not to mention the fact that they HAND ENGRAVE the balance cock (by virtue of this it means every watch is unique.) When you glance at a lange movement you know instantly that its a lange. You can't say that about patek. Patek uses a lot of the same calibers for many different models. Lange designs a brand new caliber from ground up for every new model. Oh and on the matter of movement making prowess-patek doesn't make their own hairsprings because they don't have the technical know how, but lange does. If you have ever owned both brands you would know what I'm talking about. Lange makes 5000 watches a year. Patek makes 10 times more. Lange in general are even less expensive then patek, which makes them better value.
DavidSylvester7 * and extremely well polished
I don't think you really get how watch value and prestige is determined... Lange may make amazing watches and that is why people buy them but their name doesn't have as much history as Patek and they aren't Swiss. I'm not saying the watch is not prestigious but neither Lange nor Bregeut will wear the crown so long as they are not Swiss watches. Also, Lange only makes nice dress watches in a time when sports watches are dominating the market. They are too pre-occupied with creating grand complications when people are demanding watches like the PP Nautilus or the AP Royal Oak. I'm not saying I wouldn't buy a Lange, I hope to add one to my collection someday but to say Lange wears the crown of watchmakers is just wrong; there are many supercars out there in the world but just because one company makes a car faster than Ferrari doesn't change the fact Ferrari wears the crown.
:D Ferrari isn't wearing the crown by any means. It's like saying Rolex is wearing the crown in the watch camp if you have now clue. Just because everybody knows the brand doesn't make them best in class. And history doesn't make up for this fact. Names and heritage ist by far not the the point on how you measure competition. Performance is
... how to buy ...
It seems as if we are all here for the common love of horology.
Pure horology at it`s best!!
beste Qualität einer echten Manufaktur
traumhafte ihr
What a gorgeous watch! For me, AL+S are the ultimate.
If I remember right, doesn't Vladimir Putin have one of these?
The only brand that makes me want to make love to one of their watches.
amazing timepiece. back on planet earth, the 'poor mans' grand complication can be had for around the USD $50k mark in the form of the 1815 chrono. turn it over, pure watch porn like the grand complication.
All of these replays are from me
Love the watch, the price, not so much, knock off about 99% and I'll take it.
1million?
I think 2.6 mio.
Does anybody actually own one of these
I purchased this piece three months ago
Bull
It's an investment I made, now in the family vault. In a few years the worth will be a reasonable profit.
So do we get to see it?
Constantin Andreae
Wow, if that's true, so congratulations! :D
Just the service probably costs more than 100 of my amphibias
cool
i'm sorry, but what is that accent? it's like a mix between new zealand, south africa and germany.
He’s german but with South African connections. In an interview he said that he goes to SA every Christmas.
My dad has an a lange a vacheron two bremonts, a breguet an oris a maurice lacrouix and a breitling does this mean I’m rich
2.6 million dollars and they cut the 3, 6 and 9 o'clock markers in half...
Hey, YEAH! Fuck these guys!
.. and your point is?
Don't forget the 11.
People with $2.6 million to burn don't share your autistic obsession with complete indices.
It's people like you driving case sizes to 45mm and beyond.
That's part of the charm you twit
wow
fantastic watch, clockwork, etc. In other words, a masterpiece ...... bonustraka23, you can not call stupid people, because they can afford to buy watch that you can not.
0:42 the German Producer Michael :)
12 months, 1 watch.....
does it come with fortnite themed wrist band?
I own all six.
How much does it cost?
Am I the only one who is anoyed by the cut off 3, 9 and 8 on the watch dial?
If I bought a watch for 2.6 million I would be pretty OCD about these things...
It might look better to not have had those digits at all
If you are not stupid you know that the 3 stands between 2 and 4, so it doesn't matter at all.
What about of a grand complication with tourbillon inside?!
Beautiful watch. Pity about the cut 6 o'clock tho. If the calendar and moon phase/jumping seconds were a bit smaller to accommodate a 6 and maybe a 12 it would be perfect to me.
įokia kaina
Why does the hand above the moon phase not align with the numbers???
Pat GMA Debra Lc Pat GMA GMA device GMA device talk
The basis of the movement seems to be partially based on the classic watch movement of Lemania 3210
This watch costs 1.900.000€
Long time ago...
So the guys who can actually afford this, what do they do for a living?
Meh, show the production variants.
Number 0 of 6, they are probably selling 6 but must have made 7...
I'm used to mechanical watches being smooth, yet this one is jumpy. Weird experience, it felt like the video had been manipulated in some way.
"From now on you can expect very nice watches", yeah IMO everything prior is garbage, agreed.
I kind of hate these watches. If they must be made, at least make them as pocket watches. I know it is about bragging rights and all of that, but it seems so silly to see, like an SUV-Minivan-pickup truck/sportscar that goes 200 miles per hour and can haul 12 tons AND can seat eight people comfortably AND every seat comes with a gaming PC, X-Box one and Playstation 4, with wrap-around 4k screen, and for some reason, a stop watch.
The world is changing. Switzerland is not the only country that makes complicated mechanical watches. The Germans can now do the same, only slightly cheaper. Soon the Chinese will make grand sonnerie and tourbillon affordable to the masses.
What s load of twaddle. Give me a break. I know it's not the same but I brought an alarm with
bell wind up alarm clock for $6
a belated congratulations to you sir.
No other brand will ever catch up with Patek. Yes, Lange is maybe a better watch, maybe, but Patek has the strongest auction presence and grey market. It is actually the grey market where the craziness happen. I see watches like 5723 rubies or 5711/1P anniversary going for $200k, I see 6002G in Hong Kong on offers for 1,6 million USD, by the time they get to be auctioned, they will be 2,5 million. There is a 5175R that was sold in grey market for $8 million USD!!!! Think about that, Patek is simply the best, it is their retailers network and the grey dealers with a lot of money invested in Patek. If you want an investments, you buy Patek, simple as that. Also, 5204R is the most beautiful watch ever made.
Are you kidding? Lange is absolutely a better watch than Patek nowadays and no watch enthusiast worth his complications will consider "investment value" as a priority.
@@jakekaywell5972 you don’t know what you are talking about... Lange polishes their watches, especially movements, than Patek. But their is history + value, nobody beats Patek. By the way 5175R sold on the market for $27 million few months ago. Lange is better, for entry level, but Patek is better if you plan to spend bigger money
@@49fiori "History", as applied to watches, is highly subjective and as such is not something that can be relied on objectively. Stating that Lange is anywhere near "entry-level" is laughable. Furthermore, the question of "value" also goes out the window entirely once we are describing either Lange or Patek, as there is little that they do than...say...Grand Seiko does objectively better for a fraction of the price. Stating an instance where a Patek sold for an insane amount of money only bolsters my point regarding watch enthusiasts, as the people who were involved in that transaction were investors first and possibly watch enthusiasts second.
It is easy to both argue and observe that it is, in fact, you that you don't know what you're talking about.
@@jakekaywell5972 it’s ok, you are confused, it can happen. In Entry level of Patek and Lange it’s better to buy entry level Lange. You will lose money on both of them, the finishing is better on Lange. For higher end watches, it’s better to buy Patek, finishing is equally excellent, but it’s Patek that usually is worth more after few years while Lange drops 50-60% from retail. Value is not only what you get for your money, as it’s the case with Grand Seiko, but where it will be safer to put your money in Patek vs Lange, it’s always Patek, because it keeps and increase its value. I own both Lange and Patek so I kind of understand what I’m talking about. People who usually jump on Lange bandwagon are just RUclips enthusiasts of watches who heard from others that Lange is better than Patek, but reality is different and much more complicated. My favorite Lange is probably 1815 rattrapant chronograph in honey gold introduced last year, it’s a $150k watch, very beautiful, but if you will try to sell it, you will probably get half. Whereas you can buy a very beautiful Patek like 5970J for 150k usd, and you will probably sell it for more in few years. When you are spending that kid of money you ought to care about future value, with Patek you are almost always sure to get at lest your money back and with Lange you almost always get only half or less.
@@49fiori What you're describing is depreciation, which is endemic in almost all consumer goods. I am convinced that Patek's inflated value (only in this very specific definition of the word) is for the same reason as Rolex. People want them more for whatever reason, not because they are actually and objectively the better watch. Furthermore, I would argue that if you have the money to spend to get either a Patek or Lange brand-new, you should not care about resale value in the slightest because the business ventures you doubtlessly have will more than cover for the loss. Buying a good solely or even in part for the resale value is an infantile mindset that stifles diversity and creativity in companies' products.
I do appreciate your willingness to discuss this issue though and hope we can maintain civility throughout.
$2.6 million?! WTF is wrong with this people who made watches,$2.6 million I will buy a lot stuff, one rolls royce, house, 3-4 rolex,iwc,omega...stupid people will buy it this watches.
world is crazy, think man, 2.6 mill for watch or 20 mill for picture, why? why some one to give a big box of money?! what is the different between my Tag H. and this A.L.&S.,no different, and my watch showing the same time! Who will know and will see that I wear A.L.&S(2.6 mill) very small % of people, but when I buy Rolls Royce,Lamborghini,Ferrari... or big house will see big % what I have.
no,its called shit!
***** totally agree
bonustraka23 New Rich people like to impress on the poor. Old Rich people want to impress on the Rich. Understand now? Hope u understand, i don't know about your educational background.
1. Wealth is relative - it's like saying why buy a 10k Rolex instead of 3 other great watches for 3-4k each. 2.6mil is nothing to the very rich, just like $26 is nothing to us but everything to the dirt poor.
2. It can be an investment - a place to park some money that will no doubt appreciate over time.
Yeah, but i'd rather buy an AP
AP are ugly as hell.
I found out later that this brand not even in top 20 fine watches,
The worse watch I ever bought, it's valleu is terrible and it's over priced,
2:33 They make a watch that sells for more than most luxury cars and then ruin it by making the dial look like it has a school ruler wrapped around the circumference? Horrid.
Unfassbare Uhr; danke euch von Herzen, dass ich sie sehen durfte, bevor ich abtrete.
