  • I've driven the Francis Scott Key Bridge hundreds of time over the last decade living in the Baltimore area.... it's surreal to see what happened early this morning. My prayers are with all those impacted by this tragedy.
This video is from one of the final times I drove over the bridge.
0:19 - Key Bridge (dash view)
    5:22 - Curtis Creek Bridge
7:57 - Key Bridge (Baltimore City view)

@@clasicradiolover l’m telling you, this Key Bridge and the Bay Bridge are the most scary bridges on this planet if you’re inside a taller vehicle! The walls are low, they make you stay in the right lane, there is no space, and especially on the Key Bridge, that damn thing BOUNCED the heck outta the truck while going downhill! There were definitely some design issues with the Bridge, because it never felt safe to drive on there. The new Bay Bridge is better than the last, but it still will make someone build anxiety. I don’t even fear bridges at all, not even the Seven Mile Bridge in the Florida Keys, but the ways these two Bridges went way up into the sky with low sides causes serious anxiety! Good thing your driver got through safely!

Never been there before or at least I cant recall. My heart breaks for those who lost their lives, their familes left behind hurting, those on the front lines, the city and more.
Was thinking as I saw the crash about visiting my friend in Hawaii. She lives on the mountain side. At night, I would look at the mountains and its was beautiful yet erie. To look out into darkness but still see the silhouette of the mountains was scary yet incredible since not use to it. Imagined the men on the bridge seeing the regular ocean darkness but also a large object moving toward them not being able to run away. Maybe it wasnt that way but it came to mind and pray that they didnt suffer.

The problem for us isn’t so much just the bridge; it’s that the area struck is the only access point to our Ports. I, and we are directly affected because we not only cannot do our jobs, but we cannot get tons of vital goods needing to go all over the country from here. Many companies will go out of business…we are more focused on the waterway being cleared, and whatever they do about the Bridge, we shall see in years from now.

@@ceebee23 yes…it is so sad. Lucky for us, although important, that is just an “extra” road on which to travel (33,000 vehicles travel daily, though) and huge source of revenue via the tolls. However, yes, we just simply need that waterway reopened! FYI, there are a few other vessels still stuck in there with other goods intended for other locations, as well. All these folks are not allowed to just step out of their vessel and enjoy the city; they must stay on their Vessel because they’re not USA citizens. It is torture for all these folks and those who won’t get their goods from either. Thank you so much for your concern; it is times like this we all must unite and have compassion for one another.

In 2018 I visited Baltimore for the first time. I didn't even know about this bridge. So, I was at the Top of the World observation deck in the World Trade Center on the first day of my visit. I was zooming my camera and my phone getting good shots when all of a sudden I caught something way out towards the bay. It looked like a big bridge. I kept focusing and sure enough, it was a bridge. I did research with Google maps and discovered the FSK Bridge. I told my girlfriend that I wasn't leaving until I drove across it. I've never seen a bridge this big before in person. On the final day before leaving Baltimore, I did drive across it southbound. It was really neat. The second time in Baltimore in September, I didn't do it though now, I really wish I did. I look at it this way, as my sympathies go to the families of the construction crew members, I will know that a new span will be built and maybe a whole new design too.

Almost any bridges you have ever seen have pillars standing on HUGE concrete or stone islands. Many have extra buffering structures in the current before you even get to those piers (The Key Bridge had small-looking round things, while the cantivered spans are supported by pillars with almost nothing, and the other span supports seem to have literally nothing. Perhaps it was different below the water ... but that's bad too if they can't be seen. Astounding.

They could’ve installed huge barriers around the piers to protect them. But obviously a decision was made to save money. But look what that led to. Now it’ll cost a thousand more. Capitalism only cares about short term gains and to hell with the future. They don’t care because taxpayers end up paying for all corporate projects.

They did. A NTSB drone video shows them clearly. I've been on my jet ski under that bridge over the past 4 summers and always been amazed by the massive barriers, but I've always wondered why they were so far out from the piers. I just figured some engineer knew what they were doing. I guess they didn't plan on this particular circumstance.

Also the stack of containers on the foredeck hit the undercarriage of the bridge knocking them BACKWARDS as shown in all the pictures. Your emotional concern is appreciated, but not pertinent to this incident.

Most cities have those to guard against this. if they had this the news would be a ship crashed into a concrete bridge barrier and sank and all that was lost were a lot of useless american made goods.
