he took it down because i did a whole pack of polyrhythms videos and he wants people to get on and buy the pack. i loved the video before he took it off and was just looking for it and found yours. thank you!
This is one of the best, most useful and perhaps most difficult RUclips lessons I’ve come across in a while. Cannot believe this gem has eluded me for 12 years?! 😮 Took me a week of intense practise to get through the 8 minutes here 🥵
"*THIS IS HARD TO PLAY*" Hahahah thanks for pointing it out. Double thanks for putting this video up--I'd been looking for it; it's the reason I started subscribing to Mike in the first place.
So excited to have found this! Amazing lesson on an topic that I usually see presented in a vague sense. Love having all the details to narrow down the goal. Starting this tomorrow!
Mike - Thank you for sharing. Your plug for lessons is not shameful and your skill speaks louder than words like 'I invented this on the spot' which may sort of be true because you practiced for ~ 20,000 hours before reaching this spot.
Thanks a lot for posting this drv30! After 40 min of sitting in a chair and tapping my toes and fingers I got the basics down. Just moved it to my kit and after a few minutes of scratching my head I got it down with the chitta-ding chitta-ding on the ride, haha. It's pretty surreal to play it when it just works and the four limbs are doing a bunch of different stuff :D Oh and I totally agree with "rupertwreckhead". No cheatcode to playing it, only practice! Mike Johnson is the man!
I knew I could play two diff. counts at once. I didn't know it had a name! LOL I'm so ignorant... lol I will definitely subscribe to your lessons Mr. Mike, I'm waiting to start my new plumbing job and sign up once I start makin' more.
@drv30 (continued) and the triplets.. once you have the left foot beat plus the triplets on right hand plus the tumbao on right foot, try and add the right hand quarter notes. (thats the stage im at right now) once you have that down. practice left hand tom to snare alternation and finally the paradidle on top of everything. I like to call this method, "conversion factors" cause your making your body's cordination of seperate limbs work inrelation to other limb's fixed beat.
I think its the same thing, you can feel the polyrythm however you want. I don't know if there is any nomenclature to it. The point is that it is a polyrythm.
absolutly mental... lol, I've been playing drums almost 3 years, been workin on this for probably over a year... i have the hihat toe splash going, the bass patern, and the basic hand pattern all working... im onto the 3s now on ride cymbal, then onto moving the left hand... then the paradiddle... when i get this down i shall roar in victory lol! :P
Hey Mike, Could you play this groove again and add fills to it? Cause that would be the hardest thing to do on this, coming back to the groove after a fill-and one that makes sense within it's context-
It was suggested that it may have been deleted from his database because he changed hardware sponsor. There was also another very awesome lesson that involved the baiao foot pattern, which also got deleted a long time ago, but I couldn't find my backup of that video unfortunately.
Dont even write it out just practice using fixed tempo on ur left foot (quarter notes) then practice the 3/4 with your hands, then practice the 3/4 with your hands with the triplets on your right hand. now practice your left foot quarter notes plus your hands. now pratice left foot quarter notes plus right foot, for the tumbao. now try and correlate the tumbao (both feet) + triplets on right hand now practice the left foot pattern in correlation with the right foot beat
@sirpajmcgyver, There are none that I know of, you would have to make them yourself xD. It takes a lot of time and it dosent help much, I did them and it was too hard to memorize it or play it as I "read" it. Give it a try though, just kinda draw 4 parallel horizontal lines and draw dots on each one to resemble where each note is played. Good luck!
Its ok, take a break for weeks or a month from this exercise, practice other stuff in the mean time. You will be surprised how much practicing other things can help you with this.
Been trying to learn this for a while, but keep getting stuck and losing interest. What's a good way to insert the kick in this pattern since I'm not sure exactly how it fits in the groove counting-wise.
Just play hi hat quarter notes with the tumbao bass pattern then try the hi hat eighth notes (1, 2, 3, rest, 1, 2, 3, rest) with tumbao. Then pair up the hi hats with the ride, and the bass with the ride. At the end add the snare rim shots. Don't worry about the paraddidle. You can add that once you have mastered everything else. Everything in this rhythm fits in nicely except the snare stuff, so instead of practicing snare stuff with hi hats and ride and then adding the bass drum, try adding the snare stuff last.
Sounds good and all, but this is really a misnomer. If you take the left hand out of the equation, it's broken 16th note cymbal ostinato, bombo, bass drum ostinato and a broken 8th note ostinato in the left foot. The left hand is playing a dotted 8th (3 16th) note pattern.. If he would have made the groove stuff (everything but left hand) in three or perhaps six, then the cross stick could have sat as a real polyrhythm. This is NOT polyrhythmic- it's a very cool 16th note phrase

What an easter egg, and didn't expect to see you in the comments! You two are my top two drum instructors on the interwebs. Thanks Mike and Adam!

Wow, this new HD thing is AMAZING! haha, thanks for the lesson, Mike.

My brain exploded when you added the paradiddles at the end.
O.o
You are amazing!!!!
This is such a brilliant explanation and such an educational tour of how to get outside the box and create a great grrove
Hey man, just sayin' this is still my favorite drum video on RUclips and I still show it to everyone when it comes to polyrhythms. :D
I knew I could play two diff. counts at once. I didn't know it had a name! LOL I'm so ignorant... lol

An amazng example of a polyrythm being played musically, is in the song called rosetta stoned by tool
Yeah, I am just going to try to continue practicing this and add my own little perks.
Thanks for posting! Big ups to you:)
@rockerpenguin1129
yah, i was trying some rumba clave stuff on my left foot; learning this was very helpful.
great video!

Mind=blown.
Mike is a bad man on the drums.

BEAST... that is all.
hard groove to master, would make a nice solo transition.
scary..
thanks for posting :)
@RichardCombustion
You're welcome! 40 minutes is pretty fast congratulations!

@MrTomatopotato
Good point!
@grooveboi78 no problem, enjoy!
UNREAL!
God, Im gonna cry.
I wouldnt say steal dude, music in general is about learning from others, this is an awesome video to make some sweet grooves....

@SeetherOwns
check out my favorited videos u might find a lot of stuff u like!
Great vid man
I like how he refers to people as cats
I was hoping to hear from Pat Boone Debbie Boone. Maybe Sam Huston Davy Crocket.
I tried looking up this video on mike johnstons channel and could not find it - could only find it here at drv30 don't know why anyway great lesson

Once you get it down its a great tool to use.
your welcome
Thanks for saying thanks xD

Ouch!! Clicked his hands!!
Also he was using vic firth sticks then. Now he endorses Vater. Maybe that's another reason why he removed the video
Damn
its just like quarters on the cymbal and every second eigth note on the snare right?
7:35 holy shit!!!! How did you do that!!!?
i understood 3 over 4 poly rhythm as 3 beats being played equally spaces within a 4 beat measure. is this right?
subscribe to drumteachter76 (or similar) he is the real mike johnston
3:37 tumbao, 6:07 SCG

the osmosis effect...
LOL it's just math. NO think it would also need quardnation(sp?)!!!!
I gave up at the fancy hi hat beat :).
I think this is 4 over 3,not 3 over 4.....but it's still a good lesson
