Mike I just want to say Thank you, your an absolute miracle worker to us drummers on RUclips. Not only have I picked up soooo many helpful tips and tricks for my drumming, but also for life and daily interaction, again thank you. Please write a book
While i don't play drums, i have found Mikes instruction and philosophies invaluable for my piano playing as well. Thanks for sharing your great teaching with the masses :)
I could finished my hand speed further ago If I found your lessons before. Thank you for your time, tirelessly explanation, and deeper and deeper kindness. You are my best one.👍👍👍
My god! I am guitar player who was born a drummer. I’m doing well, but mostly playing singles, doubles and paradiddles along to my favorite music, Zeppelin, Clutch, Deep Purple. This is way advanced for me, but inspirational. Thank you.
Thank you for putting up more practice pad videos - I can never find any good or creative practices for my pad. Thank you too Mike for continuing to release quality videos. You and Jared Falk are the best.
Iv been doing this for 6 months an it really works. Iv increased my hand speed an my timing. Instead of a min iv jumped it to 5 mins 4 times a day.. Thank you so much.
Went to Drum magazine website, bought the digital download of the April 2013 magazine. Everything is in there, cheap and better than trying to write it all down yourself. Great 10 day program!
@2:46 is hilarious! My wife and I walk around the house all day saying "5 minutes!" Especially when it comes to the choirs in the house. Very helpful lessons...thank you!
Thank you Mike. I agreed with the other comments that you a very awesome helpful teacher. Thank you for your time and for sharing your talents with the world.
Cant play my ddrums up here so pillows will do an its great with these exercise been playing 17 years an always learning...thanks man.. felling the burn
oh man, hey Mike i hope you read this, thank you so much man! im like a intermedium drummer and i felt frustated cause i just feel i dont advance but i know that it takes time to improve and i know this excercise will help... thanks man is really kind from your part!
Great lesson, thanks. Hand speed is something that I never really payed much attention to until lately and it's been really helpful to develop and troubleshoot technique. That said, I get super distracted trying to time myself playing and do everything I can to avoid it now.
for singles I usually play a measure of 8's on the right then a measure on the left and repeat . then I play 7's,6's,5's,4's,3's ,2's,then a measure of alternating singles. then I get technical and play them all over again playing a cheese on the last note of each set . Not necessarily for speed but they should ,like all rudiments,be played slow then advance to faster .
Hahaha omg he even says its so much easier without talking LOL but ya he says at the end all what he is talking about the toto shuffle a while back I really wanted to play Rosanna and hold the line lol not as much but that shuffle just sounded so go but I couldn't play it so I actually just played it reeeally reeeally slowly and it is effortless now at double speed for almost a year of doing so! This is all great stuff!
yes, if you get it in 5 mins, then you can speed up a little bit, but dont rush it. the point again is to build muscle memory so that means repetition, lots of it.
Hello i asked those questions 2 times on other RUclips channels without any answer; hope someone is answering me on this one : 1. I'm 42 years old ; is that too late to learn drums and if not how long does it take to just enjoy it without struggling ? 2. Do i need to learn music theory ? 3. Do i need to take lessons and if yes, how much lessons and are drum lessons expensive ? 4. How much does a decent kit cost ? Should i buy a new one or a second-hand kit ? Thank you great video and great teatcher.
Anyone can learn drums at any age. It is not too late at all. Depending on how much time you put in, you can enjoy it immensely without struggling. If you have a bit of coordination, you'd be surprised at how easy it is to play a simple 4/4 rock beat. You don't need music theory per se, you just need to learn how to read drum music and count beats/measures so that you can work with practice books. Start with 4/4. There are probably many youtube tutorials on this. You don't need lessons, but if you have the money for them, get lessons (lessons are the best). Start with the basic rudiments the guy mentions above. Those are super core. All you need is a good pair of sticks (WOOD TIPS DO NOT GET PLASTIC TIPS) and an old mouse pad to practice on. If you are super psyched, buy a used set on cragslist or something. Don't buy a new set until you are really invested. Good luck.
It would work best if you ordered DRUM magazine April issue, as the exercises he hasn't explained are in the magazine and have been explained on the Part 1 video, its basically a repetition of previous exercises. Hope that helps.
I wish I had youtube when I was a teen. I sloppily got fast playing to nofx and pennywise with headphones and I'm still sloppy because of it. This is really cleaning up bad habits!
Hey Mike, I love the concept of this video. I’ve come back to it several times but I’ve never actually followed the program. Decided I was going to give it a shot and start tomorrow. I noticed with the paradiddle diddle that it is felt as 16th note triplets. However only one of the three exercises using this rudiment are felt this way. The others are felt as 16th notes. Should I multiply my speed by 1.5 to find my correct percentage? Or do I just use the same BPM? I was messing around with it this afternoon and it felt incredibly slow. Thanks in advance for your advice.
2 questions... does he ever explain why those 4 cymbals are framed?!? It looks so good hehe also how does he talk and play like nothing!! Tony Adams first told me to just try telling him my full name address while blasting 16th notes as fast as possible lol either I stumbled with my fingers or mouth was impossible to maintain both even to this day been practicing for 2 years now lol
Mike I have a question. I've been stuck around 240 bpm single stroke roll for a while now, and I understand how muscle memory would speed up your hands, but what about something simple as a single or double stroke roll? I don't think about them when they play but would it still make a difference to play a single stroke roll slowly? Or would it be more efficient to play fast as can for 5 min intervals.
been doing that first exercise for years. still an old favourite. for some reason though my left hand works a lot faster when i use traditional grip. but i find match grip way more comfortable... weird :-/
im cofused mike...so i get my tempo for ie the first excercise and do it for 2 min..(i got the magazine)..at slow tempo...then i speed up for 2 more minutes,,,and then speed up more for the last minute..Is this correct..cause you said dont speed up....so am i gradually speeding up the tempos little by little or all at constant tempo for the 5 minutes to help my muscle memory and then at the end of 10 days..i will be quicker..thanks mike good stuff
Hi Mike, i am practicing the open and closed technique at the moment, can this apply here also?. Are you using fingers only for this way of practicing as i am noticing that you are pulling the stick right back and playing it 2 different ways with full motion being wrists and then fingers when sped up.
Before and after tempo (max playable):
Singles (16th notes) _______________195bpm - 225bpm (30bpm change)
Doubles(16th notes) _______________150bpm -170bpm (20bpm change)
Paraddidles(16th notes) _______________155bpm - 160bpm (5bpm change)
Flam-taps(8th notes)_______________140bmp - 180bpm (40bpm change) (barely new it! ha)
Paradiddle-diddles(12th notes)_______________180bpm - 200bpm (20bpm change)
Cheers mike!
Singles (16th) : 225 bpm
Doubles (16th) : 240 bpm
Paradiddles (16th) : 165 bpm
Flam taps (8th) : 200 bpm
Paradiddle-diddles (16th triplet) : 95
I probably skiped some diddle days ^^
Let's see what 10 more can do!
Time
0:08 Day one
2:26 Day two
4:30 Day three
5:53 Day six
thanks
7:00 Day Seven 7:52 Days Eight and Nine 7:56 Day Ten

Weird, 4:45 I came up with that exact exercise myself a long time ago, because I figured, like he did, that I had to switch to a left hand lead.
Superb, thanks
