Oh my!! 😍 how awesome is this. And i 100% agree, the fact that after 20 years on tube you are still buzzing with excitement when an idea for something new to teach comes to mind is just awesome! Love it mate 👊
Thanks Mike great lesson. Great tip about counting buzz rolls ... I'd love to see a lesson from you on counting buzz rolls in different time signatures.
Damn, forget practicing, you made getting up early sound fun. I want to wake up at 4:30 am and get really excited about an idea I have had. Harrrr-ye-gah Mike. Thanks. :)
This is cool. I started doing this in the early 90s instead of doing the 5 stroke on the snare, I got lazy and did it between the hi hat and snare. Thanks for bringing this up!
Yes and no. For me, it’s a sound that originated from a 5-strike roll. These are small licks that I can swap the traditional 5-stroke roll out for. I hope that helps your friend :)
My favorite, musical drummer. A lot of your teaching reminds me of when I used to learn from my teacher; Awesome methods, educational, with efficient technique.
Cool Mike! Thanks... I do random combos of these 3 different sticking variations all over the toms+snare which create some wild permutations, while keeping a 4 on the floor pulse underneath. I found it good for improving leading with my weaker left hand and flows nicely in and out of a paradiddle diddle for added complexity. RRLLR + LLRRL RLRRL + LRLLR RLRLR + LRLRL
Hi Mike, big fan! Your channel helped me grow a lot as a drummer. I wanna share a little problem I have with my drumming and in specific soloing: I feel like I have collected a nice vocabulary over the years and I can flow endlessly in triplets and 16th. That said, I'm still not stasfied with my solos as they don't make a lot of musical sense. I would greatly appreciate if you made vidoes about how to make solos that are musical. Thanks!
hey mike thanx so very much! im a drummer and totally appreciate the rudiment breakdown. speaking of which.. whats the cymbal breakdown size n models for this video? love them tones. thanx again
Great video Mike! So is it a 5 that is played on the background track right after your clap at the end? Sounded like 3 HH 2 Kick But maybe I'm crazy 😅 Anyways - killing it as always my friend!
MIKE. Long time....Good stuff...I've been playing for 60 years, and teaching for 40....I love this stuff!!!!!!.....Between Ed Shaughnessy and Jim Chapin I've been a lucky drummer.....
We call those Variation #1 Roll Figures at 2:37 "Jelly Rolls" in the marching percussion world. They're SO MUCH fun to play and listen for in a groove. BRAVO! 💪😎
Hey Mike. I was wondering if your Groove freedom book is still available. I used to have the app, and I loved it. That book is one of the best books I have used while practicing.
After nearly 20 years of watching your content, knowing you are waking up at 4 am to make new content means your passion has only grown larger, I love that Also spice level at 4:20 was propppperrr. My Face stanked.
Variation #2 has Steve Gadd vibes 😎
Not sure how I missed this post, but once again, you have the incredible ability to turn simple and rudimentary into the sublime. Thank you.
Buddy.and Joe were all about the 5 stroke. Great lesson.

Damn, forget practicing, you made getting up early sound fun. I want to wake up at 4:30 am and get really excited about an idea I have had.
Harrrr-ye-gah Mike. Thanks. :)
LOL! Hell yes. Let's freaking do it together bro!!!
Great lesson, as always, btw
How do you count a 5 stroke roll in a 4/4 bar? Or is more "felt" than counted?
HEY CONGRATS ON BECOMING THE NEW SPEAKER OF THE HOUSE!!!
AT LEAST THAT'S WHAT I THOUGHT UNTIL I CHECKED THE SPELLING.😅😅😅
Love it! I'll give it a try. Mike always showing how to put your pad rudiments on the kit hehe
Stupid question…are you playing these 5 notes as 16 note triplets, skipping the first note? (As opposed to 5 over 1)!?
This is cool. I started doing this in the early 90s instead of doing the 5 stroke on the snare, I got lazy and did it between the hi hat and snare. Thanks for bringing this up!
Best drum teacher/lover of all time. No one gets people more excited to play than you bro!!!
Nice . Got to subscribe .
hi whats the metronome ? looks nice
Is it really considered a "roll" though if do it with hands / feet combination? Asking for a friend : )
Yes and no. For me, it’s a sound that originated from a 5-strike roll. These are small licks that I can swap the traditional 5-stroke roll out for. I hope that helps your friend :)
You are amazing! Thank You very much, a hug from Argentina!

Well explained. You have really excelled in You Tube production as well.
My favourite rudiment … and I love a candle, so here goes 🥁 🕯️ 😍

Thanks Mike for getting up that early for us! I really like your 5 Stroke Roll ideas. Great content! Cheers!
I always love your choices on the drums. The real art is in your taste my friend. ❤
Love the energy Mike. Thanks.
What do you call RRLRR LLRLL 🖤
Another great lesson from our legendary teacher
The energy coming through the screen from you in this video is palpable.
Hi Mike, I see in myheritage that we are relative. Could we have a contact?
Awesome playing man.
Excellent video, Mike! So fun to watch!!! Those 3 licks are probably the only ones I can play lol, exactly my style! :)
Ahrrreee.
Man.. I'm still stuck in 2006...
Spreading it over multiple instruments is new to me.
Interesting.
👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽
I'll definitely bring the third one into my playing! It feels like a single pedal cheat code lol
5:28 I needed that solo to go on for another 10 minutes daaaaang
Those all came together very nicely for me, Mike! Thank you for the share!🫵🏼👍🫡
