Better late than never! I'm 75 years old, been playing since I was 15 years old and the more I learn, the more there is to learn. Learning drums is a wonderful adventure. I started in rock and switched over to jazz about a year later, when I discovered Joe Morello's, "Take Five". He showed wonderful skill at a low volume. By the time I turned 18, I was moonlighting as a jazz drummer in local resorts, playing for dance parties and watching couples dance to my rhythm. What a great feeling! I've been playing part-time ever since. Also, learn all you can about playing with brushes which is another great adventure. Don't worry about speed. It will come naturally. Focus on time, volume and rudiments. I'm still learning and I try to practice everyday.
Wow... This video is an overwhelming amount of ammunition for self-study. There are so many ideas here which, on their own, could lead to hours of practice/playing/fun. I wont claim that I'm going to try them all - but for 6 minutes spent on a very simple concept, I'd say this video is invaluable. I'm now a Maricle fan!
A great player can make any functional instrument sound a million bucks, and with acoustic instruments ( like a drumkit ) that's even more obvious than with electric ones.
So do I. How tight should the batter side of my snare be. It's pretty tight now but doesn't give me the rebound I want. I want that crisp snare sound. I have added a wider snare wire and tried adjusting the wire to different tensions but I can't seem to find that crisp sound. I'm a rookie so forgive my ignorance. My resonant side is table top tight and so is my batter side and I'm afraid to tighten it any more. Any suggestions? I'll wait for a reply. Thanks ahead of time.
She is soooooo much better than a younger player beating the daylights out of his/her kit with little-to-no skills. "If you can't play well, play loud!" Sherrie is a master!
I’ve known about her - saw her at Weekend of Jazz 2023 this year. Thank you Sherrie for this video. I’m always doing rudiments around the kit - now to practice these new tips. 👍🏻👍🏻🥁
I love the snare. I just commented this elsewhere, but it looks like a real low budget, 1980s Tama Rockstar DX. Like an Acrolite, it's hilarious to see this "cheap" snare in the hands of a master.
This is a great video, and excellent teacher, clear, detailed explanation & demonstration. Would be nice to study with someone like that. Guess these videos are the next best thing. :)
I would like to thank Sherrie Maricle for using her gift as one of the worlds Great jazz drummer's to helping & sharing her awesome drum skills with the world !!!
Fantastic lesson. Excellent control, clean, accents and dynamics in their proper places, the push and pull naturally of the bar lines, etc. Thanks for sharing.
Yes !! Being clean/ clear is one of the most important things when it comes to the sound & one of the most difficult things to do when it comes to musical instruments / music ! That sets you apart away from others ( both technically/ skilfulness & sound wise )! Pianos , guitars ,bases ,drums !!!,even vocals especially when we hit very very high notes ! 👍💜💜💜💜🥁🎵🐉🎤🎶💕💞
I have seen many giving lessons online on the drums. You are the finest teacher I've encountered so far. I imagine anyone having one on one classes with you is most fortunate. Thank you so much for doing this.
Great lesson! You are obviously a very accomplished teacher with a great amount of teaching experience behind you. I've always wondered how all those jazz drummer's did those little things and now, finally, I learn it's the five stroke roll! How on earth did I miss that over all of these years?
I agree, great lesson!! I finally know how to play a 5 stroke roll. I will be practicing and incorporating her instructions. enjoyed your drumming. I look forward to watching some of your other lessons. As a female drummer, thank you for your inspiration.
So inspiring! I'm nowhere near this level but I love your style, you teach very clearly and make me feel like I understand the concepts and have improved my drumming based on your lessons. Thank you so much for producing these videos! Really top-notch.
about to started my 5 yr old daughter on drums it's so amazing to be able to show her endless examples of great female drummers of all ages on RUclips. Great lesson also Sherrie.
I like how she used the sticking, feel and timing of the triplet to show how the 5 stroke can swing. She also illustrated (by showing, not talking) on how important it is to be loose when you're trying to swing! I'm going to work on this right now! I have gotten this feel (somewhat) by doing singles but doing doubles can be a greater economy of motion; getting more with less effort.
I have been drumming for about two years now and have really began to look into the jazz/swing style of drumming. Thanks for the great video and examples! This will definitely help me on my journey!
I'm glad to hear a pro talk about the floor tom "fighting back". I've wondered for years if I was just doing something wrong but never seen it referenced, and never had a teacher talk about it. BTE, it would be great to have a PDF that transcribed some of these ideas. Thanks for a great series!
Great lesson. I've always really appreciated drummers using odd numbered patterns with a rest.. its that space between the notes that makes it so interesting.
@Niels Myrner I knew I recognized your name! Your "intro to jazz" videos are what got me started on drums. What a fantastic little series they are. I appreciate you! Love and thanks from Youngstown, OH.
She strikes me as someone who would be a tough teacher, but not a mean teacher. And she's a perfectionist. Your timings had better be perfect. If you have any drumming ability in you, she will pull it out. That's what makes a great teacher.
Wonderful ideas. Thanks so much Sherrie! Keep up the great work. Mick Berry (co-author The Drummer's Bible/How to Play Every Drum Style from Afro-Cuban to Zydeco)
A gold mine! Very clean. I'm assuming the same principle could be used in other forms, such as 7 and 9 stroke rolls. Maybe they wouldn't swing, but comprise a good vocabulary.
wonderful and eye-opening lesson for an 85 year old newbie drummer. Many thanks.

I love her snare sound, Thanks for the Upload!

Sounds great, and it looks like the cheapest, entry-level steel Tama snare you can find. Those things are like $50 on Craigslist all day.

No sweeter sound to my ears than a skilled a drummer
She is soooooo much better than a younger player beating the daylights out of his/her kit with little-to-no skills. "If you can't play well, play loud!"
Sherrie is a master!
And not once did she say "hey you tube cats' and offer some corny life lesson, just clear instructions, which was very refreshing.
Didn't drop any names either.
I’ve known about her - saw her at Weekend of Jazz 2023 this year. Thank you Sherrie for this video. I’m always doing rudiments around the kit - now to practice these new tips. 👍🏻👍🏻🥁
thanks Sherrie-I play sax all through school, now Im just a self taught drummer, I've been trying to work on my fills. Ill keep watching!
Covered so much ground in only 6 minutes. Amazing player and teacher.
Wow. I can listen to her for hours! It's like gold for my ears! So much knowledge.
Wow! Great sounding snare. Smooth hands. Woman's got game.
Also, she has wonderful communication skills.

I like the ride too :D
This was a really great lesson, Sherrie is a fantastic drummer and, even more importantly, a great teacher!

Wow that kit sound soooo nice. real tight and clear, I hear every single stroke.
Nicely executed, clean and clear.

Amazing teacher and instructor. Belongs in ANU, UT and Berkely.
I love hearing the end of the tom notes sing when the vocal track pops back in
She's the mother of drumming I never knew existed! I want more Sherrie lessons!
I absolutely love this snare sound
👍👏💜💜💜🥁🎵🐉🎤🎶💕💞
Very smooth jazz playing, Sherrie! I am OK at jazz drumming, but I know jazz chops when I hear them, and you have them!
Drums are awesome. 😄

VERY professional, high quality, instructional video!!! That snare sound is worth a million dollars, wow!

Fantastic job Sherrie! LOVE the 32nds w/BD on the accented tap! Very well articulated, and great material! I'm def a fan.
What a great sound. I could listen to her drum all day.
I especially appreciate by the expression in her eyes the way she hears what she’s playing
Great lesson. I've always really appreciated drummers using odd numbered patterns with a rest.. its that space between the notes that makes it so interesting.
That opened my eye to something that should have been quite obvious! Thanks, Sherrie! Great lesson!
Clean. Great teacher. First time seeing her and I like her a lot.
Oh.Me, too !👍💜💜💜🥁🎵🐉🎤🎶💕💞
Love sherrie! Met her this semester
So smooth in her movement, it's insane
Thanks you very much for this lesson. On a technical note, the white background really helps seeing the movements which is really interesting.
Sherrie, Sherrie Lady! Great lesson, great playing! Greets from Poland!
Hello Poland !💜💜💜🥁🎵🐉🎤🎶💕💞
Takes 9 lifetimes to swing that hard!
@Niels Myrner I knew I recognized your name! Your "intro to jazz" videos are what got me started on drums. What a fantastic little series they are. I appreciate you! Love and thanks from Youngstown, OH.

That's what makes a great teacher.
... great chops and very well-planned presentation. Thanks.
U'm not a drummer but I gauge a drummer's swing by their ride cymbal technique. I love yours!
She’s great 👍🏻 really enjoyed these exercises!!
So refreshing to see an amazing female drummer. I love drumming but there is definitely a lack of female drummers especially in jazz
Totally agreed.
