      Better late than never! I'm 75 years old, been playing since I was 15 years old and the more I learn, the more there is to learn. Learning drums is a wonderful adventure. I started in rock and switched over to jazz about a year later, when I discovered Joe Morello's, "Take Five". He showed wonderful skill at a low volume.
      By the time I turned 18, I was moonlighting as a jazz drummer in local resorts, playing for dance parties and watching couples dance to my rhythm. What a great feeling! I've been playing part-time ever since.
      Also, learn all you can about playing with brushes which is another great adventure.
      Don't worry about speed. It will come naturally. Focus on time, volume and rudiments. I'm still learning and I try to practice everyday.

      Mikey Ruiz Comd down to jam nite in Chicago. You might very well find almost a whole band of women. A drummer (me), a bass player, sax chick, usually a guitar player and a flutist. I often also wind up.singing or playing congas, too. To not be bored waiting to play. Like ketchup, congas go with damn near anything...it's at Fuller's on Irving Park, usually a Saturday. Look up their Facebook, and scroll for Dennis da Menace on chalkboard photo, that's a good jam nite. Good people there.

    Wow...
    This video is an overwhelming amount of ammunition for self-study. There are so many ideas here which, on their own, could lead to hours of practice/playing/fun. I wont claim that I'm going to try them all - but for 6 minutes spent on a very simple concept, I'd say this video is invaluable.
    I'm now a Maricle fan!

      A great player can make any functional instrument sound a million bucks, and with acoustic instruments ( like a drumkit ) that's even more obvious than with electric ones.

    • @johnnyhelms9909
      @johnnyhelms9909 5 лет назад

      So do I. How tight should the batter side of my snare be. It's pretty tight now but doesn't give me the rebound I want. I want that crisp snare sound. I have added a wider snare wire and tried adjusting the wire to different tensions but I can't seem to find that crisp sound. I'm a rookie so forgive my ignorance. My resonant side is table top tight and so is my batter side and I'm afraid to tighten it any more. Any suggestions? I'll wait for a reply. Thanks ahead of time.

      Jiří Fiala You RARELY see female drummers, period, much less good ones. And great drummers of either sex are a total B*TCH to find, too. Wish they didn't look apprehensively at you when the MC says, "She's going to do drums," and you get the idea they don't look thrilled from being female. or "You're playing drums?" yes. Moving on...?

    • @AshleyKampta2
      @AshleyKampta2 6 лет назад +4

      Eugene Capielo There are three wrist movements, either RLR or LRL but you bounce the first two, making a double stroke out of them. You’re still feeling in three, but the doubles on the first two hits make it five. RrLlR or LlRrL. The caps are the triplets (the wrist movements, the “threes”) and the small letters are the bounces or rebounds from the initial hits. Hope this helps!

    I like how she used the sticking, feel and timing of the triplet to show how the 5 stroke can swing. She also illustrated (by showing, not talking) on how important it is to be loose when you're trying to swing! I'm going to work on this right now! I have gotten this feel (somewhat) by doing singles but doing doubles can be a greater economy of motion; getting more with less effort.

    I especially appreciate by the expression in her eyes the way she hears what she’s playing

    Obviously, she is excellent. However, I don't quite get how a 5-stroke roll, usually RRLLR and LLRRL with 5 beats is the same as two triplets with 6 beats. I must be missing something. I don't want to say that she is wrong because she is obviously a fantastic and knowledgeable player with tons of experience.

      Try to feel the 6th beat on the last (5th) beat. I think I get the inner and last beat she mentioned now, with your reminder sticking. She did at times play an extra beat as an accent - an actual 6 stroke roll - like the 10 stroke is shown on the Tommy Igo / Vic Firth rudiment poster.

    So you thought rudiments were boring...
