hm... this might be a silly question, but is the 40 J/cm^2 cumulative? In one of your slides you say you need 4.18 days of staring at white ipad screen to reach 40 J/cm^2... if I spend 2 hours a day looking at my ipad, and cumulatively within 2 months I would've reached that 4.18 days threshold, does that mean the damage would have steadily occured? or does your skin somehow reset once you remove the light source?
Yen Kuok Not at all a silly question! In the studies it was given as one dose - since skin pigment fades over time and in most other areas skin is capable of repairing itself, I would say it isn't strictly cumulative :)

Who else uses Night shift all day like me? 😀
I know I'm a year too late but: I DO!!!
Meee 😊
I basically do with my sleep schedule 😜
Meeee. But it’s because i like it :)
So you sleep during the day after your day skincare and sleep with spf?
You're actually the most scientific and genuine creator on youtube that i've met so far. Thank you for clearing up the confusion on screen light.
Love you! Thanks for breaking down the science for us. You deserve so many more subscribers!
Thank you so much for this video! After the marketing from some sunscreen brands and influencers posts about, I needed something trustable. As always, thank you!
From one scientist to another, thank you 💛 I don't trust beauty bloggers or half the products on the market. I get straight down to the chemistry of the ingredients, and physiology of their reactions on skin. I need details, in depth! So this channel is just perfect and saving me so much time. I actually paused to read your figures on the tables lol. Have you any research with regards to how blue light LED therapy studies show it kills bacteria therefore used in acne treatment. While killing the bacteria is it photodamaging skin simultaneously? X
So interesting! I've been wondering about this for a while! Thanks for explaining it 💕
Another very informative video. Love how you research and create formulations to back up everything said.
Thanks so much for this video. With so many companies pushing out products currently to prevent damage from blue light I was starting to think it was a huge issue. Thanks for the reality check backed by science!
Queen of Science
Lab Muffin, thanks for providing the science of skin care and beauty! I reckon that my interest in your videos makes me a fellow nerd (or was it geek? :^)) but during a time when so few RUclips "beauty gurus" even apply sunscreen prior to makeup application OR refer to it, it's refreshing to hear not only the importance of SPF protection in general but the negative impact unprotected sun exposure has on skin and it's contribution to premature aging. Helluva run on sentence there; the coffee is strong this morning. It's my long-winded way of saying thanks SO much for all your hard work and making this content accessible to those of us without advanced degrees in chemistry. Adore your videos!
Thank you so much! :)
Ah, I feel like I need to be literally taking notes when I watch these videos! Great stuff! Thank you for doing all the research and breaking it down so well.
Thank you so much! It's so nice to hear it's appreciated :)
Michelle muahhhhhh you are the best. I have been worrying about this for so long. Thank you so much for this video.
You're really good at breaking things down in a way that I can always understand. Like now, I have a migraine and I haven't eaten in 24 hours. My brain digested something, even if my tummy hasn't.
I'm so glad to hear it made sense even through a migraine! Hope it gets better soon ❤️
Thank you so much for this video! I was looking some info about this topic from a Long time ago!❤ I love the way you explain it!😄
finally i'm on the side of youtube i needed. i searched so hard and could make no sense of what i could find. also getting conflicting info from dermatologists (including mine i can't access now bc in a different country) about what kind of sunscreen to use (like zinc / iron oxide). i'm at home and lacking the vitamin d so little natural i'm getting. even if i'm up during the day, my classes being online and my desk being in a dark corner, i barely see the sun. yet, despite all the acids, retinoids, sunscreen i see no visible changes in my hyperpigmentation. and i'm super careful not to overdo it, choosing the lowest percentages and exfoliating not more than once. some parts might have even got worse. been looking into the effects of visible and blue light to see if that might offer some clues and if i may be wearing sunscreen wrong. so happy your last video somehow led me to find your videos on this question. finally a nice synthesis of what the evidence says in a way that i can understand it. no solutions sadly but answers i needed. i need to go back and watch all of your videos seriously. thank you.
then could you explain about the blue light filter mode in phone like does it protect your skin from damaging?
I really appreciate the work you clearly put into these videos, thank you so much!
Thank you so much. Please do more interesting videos. You have answered all my questions in my head. Ive been skeptical with all the dermatologists ive watched. As your subscriber thank you again.
So interesting as always!
You’re awesome! I always wondered about this.
ok but that transition music>>
I kind of liked it 😂
Thank you for making this information accessible 😽
Talk about alcohols please! I like Japanese products but they usually have alcohol in their frist ingredients like sunscreens aand lotions
Thanks!!
she has :)
Lots of Japanese products don't have alcohol afaik!
Sonia Fdez Alcohol is a natural antiseptic and kills bacteria, which is why it’s contained in many lotions, particularly ones that used to relieve cuts ( brand name used to be called TCP ) and toners and lotions for acne prone skin, and mouthwashes ( which you do not swallow). There are alcohol free products too if you are that worried, but they lack the same benefits as the aforementioned versions that don’t contained alcohol.
Been waiting for thissss
HI! Greetings fro Brazil, I've met your channel last week and can't stop watching them, love the way you articulate and bring actual facts or studies to skin care, specially on YT.
Could you please make a video about famous electronic skincare tools (such as HF electrodes, LED, microcurrent, ultrasonic and etc)?
Can they be damaging for the skin? Do they really make a significant effect on skin?
Looking forward for your opinion, thank you anyways!
Great video Lab Muffin! :) Thanks so much for all your time and effort. I've been looking into red light therapy for skin anti aging benefits, focusing on actual research papers since there's an OCEAN of products with a million promises! Is there a device, brand, vendor you currently like? PS. LOVE your hair.
It would be interesting to see whether blue lights used in at home LED masks or dermatologist practices could be harmful. They have been studied to treat acne and offer other benefits to the skin.
Thank you for this very informative and detailed video. 👍🏼
ugh there's never good solutions for black skin is there. I was always wondering why my face and neck are 3-4 shades darker than my body although I wear sunscreen daily and use Ahas and Bhas daily. Nothing works, now Im sad :( .
Thanks for the video, theres no better content about science of skincare than your's. Also did anyone ever tell you you look like Julie from friends?
Foundation and antioxidants, and avoidance are your best bets! Hopefully there'll be solutions soon, but IMO whenever there's an issue in beauty that only affects POC companies drag their feet to make products for it. I had an argument with a cosmetic formulator on Twitter who flat out denied that visible light was a problem despite a ton of dermatologists backing me up (and all the peer-reviewed literature of course).
I will take that as a big compliment! :D
Same problem to me😣 is she said using lot phone we don't use sunscreen??
Omygosh I have the opposite problem. All of my body is a different shade of brown and my face is about 3 shades lighter than my neck. I hate it so much 🤦🏾♀️
Great video. Thank you!!
I love your channel!
gosh what a timely recommendation
Thank goodness, I don't need to buy those silly blue glasses :)
Thank you so much for digging into this for us!
Blue light glasses are for your eyes, not your skin. But yes, I don't know if the information is up to date for eyes or also marketing gimmick? Have you seen Eyetamins? Apparently they protect your eyes from blue light?
Lab muffin to the rescue!!
Very helpful, thanks!
Apparently Tinosorb M absorbs a bit of HEV blue light... Too bad that filter so hideously inelegant. I love your videos!!! ❤️❤️❤️
Thank you! Unfortunately anything that absorbs visible light is going to be visible. I think our best bet is probably iron oxide - at least it's skin coloured!
Does the Blue light filter option on my phone help ? (Beside increasing battery time)
I’m wondering the same thing
Great video! I was always wondering about blue light so this was a perfect video for me. What do you think about the new sunscreens that have come out which are supposed to be good against blue light etc. I think they have antioxidants in them. Do you think they work? And do you think oled screens are worse/better than lcd screens?
I think antioxidants work, but it depends a lot on the formulation. In terms of screens, I think what's on the screen colour-wise is a lot more important than the type of screen itself!
At this point, i should just lock myself in a basement and live like Dracula😐
I sleep with 2 LED light bulbs set to blue (like a full-room night light), so I was really freaked out there for a bit that I was totally screwing myself over! 😬 I don’t know how I’d sleep easy without it, so what a sigh of relief.
What do you think about the protection Mecca 30 gel sunscreen offers? Is it sufficient?
I’m learning through your videos about sunscreen filters but still don’t understand amounts.
Active ingredients: Titanium Dioxide [3.00%w/w], Methylene Bis-benzotriazolyl Tetramethylbutylphenol [2.25%w/w], Diethylamino Hydroxybenzoyl Hexyl Benzoate [1.600%w/w]
Thank you 🙏🏽
Super helpful!! I hope my light therapy device (Feel Bright Light cap) with green light that shines on my forehead (around 500nm) isn't causing any pigmentation. I already have some uneven skintone there. Fitzgerald type 2 though. But I'm assuming it's stronger than regular light, that's why it's light therapy, so not so sure it won't cause any pigmentation. My mood and sleep pattern is more important though, so I'll keep using it! Along with niacinamide and peels for the pigmentation :)
Different colours have different effects! There haven't been any skin effects reported for green light, but there haven't been many studies on it either.
@@LabMuffinBeautyScience Didn't one of the studies you linked before use 532 nm?
omg how about blue light therapy? specifically the foreo espada
There used to be a little UVA emitted from the screens back in the day of CCFL backlight. But CCFL is neither as energy efficient nor as space-efficient as LED nor cost competitive, so it's dead and buried, all light emitted nowadays is visible light, generally starting out as tight blue at the LED semiconductor, and downshifted with phosphors or q-dots to add green and red components to it.
I still turned my iPad brightness down while watching this video lmao
Lab Muffin... Conspiracy Theory 😂😂😂
merin mathew this was so funny ! 😂
I know you made this video a few years ago, but could you do a review on blue light filtering makeup? Specifically the Screen Queen foundation by Milani. It makes some unique claims about blue light protection and I don’t know any other channels that would discuss how authentic those claims are like you would using science and actual research-based studies. Please and Thank you!
Thank you for bringing up this topic!
Anyway, I wanna know if UVC is really filtered by atmosphere? Do we won't get any harm from it? Do we need to do something to stay away from it? Thank youu🙏
Yep, it's completely absorbed by oxygen which is 21% of the atmosphere :)
love your hair :)
I'm went back to this video cause there's a brand that created a skincare line for blue light
Do you have an updated video on this topic?
You had me burst out in laughter and tears at 1:20 😂😂😂😂
Liked without even watching ♥️
Hahaha thank you for your trust in me!
Lab Muffin Beauty Science we trust you 😇♥️
What do you think about LED face mask?
The comic sans got me 🤣
Will a sunscreen with Blue Light Technology work?
Hello.. I think I am confused about LED light. I thought LED light therapy was all the rage for youthful skin?
can you make a video on how does whitening cream work?
I have a video on hyperpigmentation you might like :)
I think tinted sunscreens could really help protect against HEV light, I wonder what’s your opinion on tinted sunscreens?
tinted sunscreen or bb cream works afaik
Is using an LED light therapy mask ok ?
Geeze, if only Valkyrae talked to you about this topic.
Also some face creams make your skin sun sensitive, it would probably be a good idea to stay off your phones because blue light can damage your skin much faster because the phone is close to your face.
I think you forgot to watch any of this video lol
Is using an LED light therapy mask okay ?! I use it for anti aging, so I just wanna know if it is actually helping with that.
ASMR SoniaSoothes sameee
As long as it's not blue or Violet light it and you don't abuse the thing you should be fine because she only emphasized blue and violet light in this video and the other video she mentioned.
Any recommendation to lighten armpits please? I do laser hair removal and stopped using deodorant already. Thanks in advance.
Try using alpha hydroxy acid! Paula’s Choice has some options you might like :)
Are the blue light protected eye glasses also just a marketing craze? They are more expensive than the ones without. I wonder if they are worth it 🤨
creepy late comment here...I've been looking for a video or blog post or ANYTHING like this. I keep hearing about "anti-blue light skincare and makeup" and wondering about papers talking about this. I'm a scientist who knows too much about the electromagnetic spectrum and just wanted to know WHY "blue light was bad for you". Thanks for making a great video including math! :)
I'm here 6 days after your comment and I'm loving this informative video.
I've heard lots and lots of people keep saying that alcohol in some sunscreens can damage the skin barrier. And using those alcohol sunscreens can make your skin so much thinner. What do you think?
I have a podcast with Kind of Stephen coming out about this - hopefully really soon!
Waiting for a video on this topic
Hi so I am an IT professional and I work 8 hours straight on the laptop, most of the content is white..I turn yellow light on laptop screen and reduce brightness a lot. Other than that, I use my phone as well thru the night for about 2 hours with yellow light of course. And I have noticed that my face is darker than my neck and rest of body. It is a concern since I’m a medium complexion girl.. not too fair not too dark. What should I do? Sunscreens don’t help
i need this answer. now classes are online, 99% of my waking hour is spent in front of the computer or phone.
Put a HEV protection sunscreen, it would be convenient if it had also UVB and UVA. Supergoop unseen sunscreen SPF 40 that protects against all these 3, plus infrared
also put on antioxidants on skin
that's because of the sun.
@@yugeno
she said sunscreens aren't helping (meaning she already uses them)
If I am at home the all day I need use sunscream?
Hey, I read somewhere that 4-8 hours on a fully-lit screen is equivalent to 30 minutes in the midday sun; to what extent does this ring true for you? It's just as a mid-2000's baby, I have had technology thrust in my face from a very young age, spending hours and hours on screens. A whole decade later, I am figuring out what this means for my skin.
EDIT: I love your hairstyle so much, just saying.
No, you can see the calculations for the different types of screens, it would take days.
@@LabMuffinBeautyScience Right. There's just so many conflicting ideas about how much is a safe amount of time, I was unsure. Thank you.
... and your blue hair in tune ...
Is she said in indoor dark skin people working on phone not use sunscreen???
damn, would not expect the Kindle paperwhite to be quicker to get to 40 J/cm² than LED or computer screens... the effects seem to be negligible though, thankfully!
There’s research that says red light therapy helps wrinkles and fine lines. Also, I don’t buy that just the blue light from screens messes with the sleep/wake cycle. Wouldn’t that be light in general?
If you look up the action spectrum for melatonin suppression, you can see that it peaks at 464 nm - that means blue light suppresses melatonin most effectively, which is what messes up the cycle.
Lab Muffin Beauty Science right, but a study I found after Googling what you suggested found that even red light impacts it. But you’re right, blue is the worst of all of them on the visible spectrum.
Might not damage skin, but sure it damages health. Keep electronics outside room, turn off your wifi at night, and get sun exposure especially in the morning for at least 10 to 15 mins (longer for darker skin tone). There are many studies talking about sun exposure improves health. Mitochondrial function and health is much more important than worrying too much about hyperpigmentation. Refer to lectures by Dr Jack Kruse.
Hi, would a computer be more likely to damage your skin over time compared to a phone because it is bigger so there is more light?
The phone would because it’s closer to your face.
Is it possible I could get a dark spot from the phone which is already filtered on for Bluelight or LED desk lamp?
I got a dark spot on my face even watching it a few feet from my face. Blue light is serious stuff.
Zinc oxide is not enough in sunscreen to protect against visible light. But visible light from the sun is a lot stronger than our devices. So will zinc oxide in sunscreen be sufficient to protect against visisble/blue light from our devices?
You don't need to protect against light from your devices...
@@LabMuffinBeautyScience oh.. thank you
For most people, no need to bother. For a computer gamer and scientist who spend on average 12 hours a day staring at two-3 screens at the same time... Maybe. I'm starting with 50% nightshift for all screens today, as a test to see if my dried out, reddish skin (which is only the front of my face, the sides of my cheeks and rest of all body has no skin issues) will get better.
Nothing wrong with darker skin !
When it’s hyperpigmentation (uneven tone) it’s understandable as to why people are self conscious since it’s to do with how they feel with their aesthetics
You know I stayed for the nerd!!!!
👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Whenever I use phone my tight side face I feel like twitch whhy?😫
Can I use computer screen right after applying retinol or retin a?
i also wonder about how much light is actually ok after wearing a vitamin a product. if i got to bed right after, the pillowcase is what is going to be absorbing everything that's on my face. i'm usually on my computer or my phone while i wait and i start to think, wait is this even ok? also (sun) lights peering in through the curtains/blinds while i'm sleeping. how much of it is not ok. millions of youtube videos and articles repeating the same thing but never going beyond the surface. this is my general complaint about anything i'm looking for online. so frustrating. so much time wasted.
That is why appeal to nature fallacy is very bad. Having to rely on Sun=good and screen=bad is absurd that screen is 100x less harmful than sun in affecting the skin.
I'm looking for a physical sunscreen that's silicone, ane, on, or silicone related stuff that's not in the ingredient list. My skin break out from those ingredients and chemical sunscreen makes me also itch and bumpy. Can anyone recommend me something?
I'd dig through Lab Muffin's blog for options. Gothamista might be a good source as well. Are you in the US? Have you tried newer generations of chemical/ organic UV filters. Older/ US organic filters, stabilizers, and vehicles could all play a part in your reactions to them. I know I tend to react to them plus I'm oily, so I started ordering face sunscreen online. For mineral options in the US, EltaMD UV Physical Broad-Spectrum 41 or Neutrogena Sheer Zinc Dry-Touch Sunscreen Broad Spectrum SPF 50 might be all mineral options for you. I don't know how dark or light your skin is. The EltaMD has a tint (works for most light to med skins; probably will not work for fairer and darker skin) and the Neutrogena has a noticeable white cast. I haven't tried the Neutrogena one, but I seen it on others. As far as UVA protection goes, I hear both of these have stronger protection for mineral only options.
Here's a bunch I've reviewed! labmuffin.com/my-sunscreen-mini-review-spreadsheet/
I just tried MatteScreen from SuperGoop, and I really like it! No white cast either (I have medium/light skin tone)
