Love these Top 20s, John! Running commentary: * I'm really glad you didn't put "Candle in the Wind 1997" on your list. Elton said in his autobiography how he hated the public's obsession with it, as if they were trying to keep themselves in mourning for far too long. It definitely deserves mention, but it's better to just let it lie. * The video for "You Gotta Love Someone" kind of reminds me of Billy Joel's video for "River of Dreams". I love both songs, and wish "You Gotta Love Someone" was more widely available. * I *love* "True Love"! So much passion in the vocals! I wish it had been a bigger hit in North America. * I remember reading that "Runaway Train" was a sort of precursor to Elton and Eric touring together. They played a couple of shows together, but ultimately, the tour didn't end up happening for some reason. * I have a soft spot for "If You Were Me" because it's completely in my vocal range (a rarity for Elton's music). * Forgive me if I've already said this elsewhere, but I love playing "The One" on piano. The two piano solos and the gorgeous chord structure is truly a joy to play! * "You Can Make History (Young Again)" is possibly one of the most-owned songs in the world funny enough, owing to the fact that it was the B-Side of the "Something About the Way"/"Candle in the Wind 1997" double A-Side CD single. As someone else mentioned, "You Can Make History" was also featured on the US issue of Love Songs, and was actually also a 1996 single in the US (#70/#4 AC) and Canada (#19). It is true, however, that it never appeared on a studio album. Perhaps if The Big Picture were ever reissued, it could make a good bonus track. * "Written in the Stars" was also Elton's last Top 40 single of the 20th Century, ending his 30-year run with at least one entry in the Billboard Top 40 Singles chart every year. Of course, the appearance of "Cold Heart" in the Top 40 has given him his first Top 40 single of the 21st Century, 21 years into it.
@@eltonmusicfan I find those lists practically impossible to compile, since I gravitate towards different Elton songs at different times for different reasons. There are certainly some I enjoy more than others, but I really couldn't rank them definitively. I really enjoy yours, though! :)
When I remember correctly, the video director of You Gotta Love Someone and River Of Dreams is the same. I always thought for River Of Dreams he borrowed heavily from his previous work for Elton.
Oh, I was eager to participate on this one. Such a variety to pull from in the nineties! BTW, I like your list! 20. Wicked Dreams 19. Elaborate Lives 18. House 17. Long Way From Happiness 16. Suit of Wolves 15. On Dark Street 14. A Woman's Needs 13. Please 12. Some Other World 11. Whitewash County 10. Duets For One 9. I Know Why I'm in Love 8. Big Man in a Little Suit 7. Circle of Life 6. The Messenger 5. Understanding Women 4. The One 3. You Gotta Love Someone 2. Live Like Horses 1. Believe
Admittedly, I've picked a couple for the novelty. Aida sticks out in the Elton catalogue, so I picked what is fun to sing. Some Other World is, I think, great fun in quick fashion. In truth, you could swap any of my bottom 15 with You Can Make History... I look forward to your next list!

This was actually easier than I expected, because when I started looking at the dates of some of my ‘hidden gems/what on earth possessed them not to put this on an album’ songs, I found that a number were from the 90s- then those new tracks on the ‘To Be Continued'/'The Very Best Of' compilation that I always liked* - and through your channel I was introduced to the excellent ‘Red’ and 'You Can Make History'. In what I hope is chronological order: 1. I Swear I Heard the Night Talking 2. You Gotta Love Someone 3. Easier To Walk Away 4. Made For Me 5. The One 6. Emily 7. On Dark Street 8. The Last Song 9. Teardrops (with k.d. lang) 10. Don’t Let the Sun Go Down On Me (with George Michael) 11. If You Were Me (with Chris Rea) 12. Circle Of life 13. Can You Feel the Love Tonight? 14. Latitude 15. Something About the Way You Look Tonight * Easier To Walk Away and You Gotta Love Someone I knew from 'The Very Best Of' album but Wikipedia says they were recorded for 'To Be Continued', along with I Swear . . . and Made For Me. Nothing really stood out for me from Aida, sad to say, not Top 20 material though I have listened to it a number of times and will do so again as you're reviewing it, and I did almost choose Written In the Stars. Runaway Train would be an honourable mention. As would Wicked Dreams. And Blessed. I don't want to put them in order but The One would easily be, er, One. Horses might be 2, maybe Emily is 20. Live Like Horses is a worthy winner in your list, but The One has always been in my ever-expanding Top 10. I'm glad you liked If You Were Me - I've mentioned before that Chris Rea is a very close second to Elton in my list of favourite solo artists. So I take it the next one is 2000 to 2009? Or is it 2000 to present?
BTW. looking forward, I've never listened to Billy Elliot, so there's one thing to do, plus I've listened to a couple of songs from Lestat and so far I'm really impressed! Someone has compiled a playlist on RUclips, thank goodness.
I believe the US release of Love Songs had You can Make History, and No Valentines on it. Also, from the time of Best of... he recorded You Gotta Love Someone, Medicine Man, I Swear I Heard the Night Talking, You Were Made for Me, and Easier to Walk Away (I believe those were from a planned album that never came together). They are on To be continued, and the Very Best of... released in the 90s anyway.
Oh, you got me worried. But The Road To Eldorado came out in 2000, so on John's rules it will be included in the next round. Technically, 2000 was the last year of the century/decade/millennium but rules is rules. Including El Dorado in here would have been hugely difficult, because I like nearly every song on that soundtrack! The same thing will happen with The Union (2010) if we still have two lists to go - it won't be in the next list.
@@eltonmusicfan Unlike Aida, which is quite heavy, I find the songs on El Dorado are really upbeat, bright, songs about friendship, love, adventure. Hope you'll fee the same!

Urgghhh - can't stand A Step too Far. I quite liked I know the Truth, though not heard it for years. Not keen on Pain - I don't like that lyric that locks it into 1994. Did you catch the single version of If the River Can Bend? Was a much better mix. Recover Your Soul was a little different as a single - I think they messed a little with his vocal, made it sound a little higher. My top 20 would include - Believe, Latitude, The One, You Can Make History, Blessed, I Swear I Heard the Night Talking, A Woman's Needs, The Power, Emily, The North, The Last Song, Suit of Wolves, The End Will Come, If the River Can Bend, Recover Your Soul, Wicked Dreams, Red, Love's Got a lot to Answer For, Cold, Please, WAKE UP WENDY (this song is among my all time favourites - feels to me like it set the stage for Songs From the West Coast).
I'd never heard of Wake Up Wendy! Just listened to it and yes, sounds a bit West Coast. Various sites saying it was written by Trey Parker but Wikipedia says Elton and Bernie, and it's very obviously an Elton song! I don't like it enough to be a Top 20 but still, on first listen, a really good song, thanks for introducing me to it.

The Power (with Little Richard)
