You may not realize it, but your impact with your channel is so much deeper than I think is credited. I’ve seen you bring awareness to so many very serious situations throughout this series and it’s so enlightening to see you give some of these girls justice even if it’s years later. It is so incredibly refreshing. Keep doing what you’re doing!

Seriously, it’s crazy how many inappropriate scenarios my young brain normalized. I did a rewatch before I found this channel and even then at 20 something years old, inappropriate was not a word that I associated with this show, but it is. I don’t think any of Jessica’s videos are taken out of context. These girls really were under a lot of pressure and forced into situations that were not 100% safe. Most of the time they were put into uncomfortable situations just for the sake of making them feel uncomfortable so they be prepared for “ the real world” of modeling. Sorry for the rant

yes!! i grew up watching this show and always "teamed up" with tyra and tought the models were overlly emotional, unreasonable etc etc... bc i was a kid and i tought that tyra was profesional and always right, but these videos really made me understand how bad antm actually is
The silk worms were so unnecessary. Actually, every animal on set on ANTM *EVER* was unnecessary and borderline animal abuse.
True, I can excuse photoshoots with dogs as dogs are USUALLY treated with more respect than wild animals. But you're totally right

If they had used the worms to identify the use of silkworms in the production of silk and would have been cool. Have the bottles only dressed and silkworms to make a point. These pictures are kind of pointless

I’m certain that if each model picked their best shot, every cycle would have a different winner. They really use the photos they choose to rig the results.

As a film major student , I have to point something out about how Catherine was directed. The director and crew are always working with actors and non-actors on set. Just the same as photographers and creative directors. And as directors, we often find it “practical” or “easy” to direct the way Mr. Jay directed Catherine: using the talent’s emotion and feelings to translate facial expressions to the image.
“Think about something that would make you really sad.” This is the worst way to direct your actors and models because you are psychologically abusing your talent. You never know how their mental health is at. And that’s just a lazy and stupid way to get to nowhere.
Never use your talent’s emotions as working tools. Even professional actors and actresses have problems with that method.

And how you make a person to show a particular emotion if they dont know their face and how to do it during the shoot? You say go practice, call me when you learn it? So all production team gotta wait till you learn how to show emotion? To show emotion you need to feel it, showing emotion without feeling the emotion comes with experience
I've seen this happen on set. The talent ends up slowing down production because they can't get out of that headspace. You are absolutely right. It's the lazy way and it's a horrible thing to do to someone.

And catherine was really upset and knew immediately she was going home when she saw her photo
Istg everyone that happens to go on this show should like pose and be ready and gorgeous 24/7, whether it's a test shot or smth. So the writers don't have any materials to sabotage(stage) them with..

@@reinq_5584 Do you know what a test shot is though? Lol it’s an image that’s taken first. Usually to check the lighting and camera settings. The photographer isn’t even really focused on the subject.

Kinda confusing
I feel like some of these shoots in ANTM is disrespectful to the designers of the clothes they model. Like the silk dresses, some were hand crafted and they dump silk worms on it?! If I was a designer, I'd feel kind of insulted by having my work have worms thrown all over it.
@Ryan that too. Watching this show as an adult, i didn't realize how horrible and manipulative the judges, Tyra and the J's were. Like I watched a RUclipsr (believe her name is Luxoria or something similar) and she reacted to a makeover. During the judging a girl got extremely sick and Tyra said to the camera if she doesn't come to the judging, she is cutting her. The girl comes despite being sick and looking horrible. Well Tyra goes on to tell the girl that she needs to take care of herself and not push herself. Pretty much saying if you're sick, you got the choice to stay home.
But she just told the camera that she needs to come despite being sick, or she'll be cut. 🤦♀️
Post the third. The silk ‘theme’ could have been done so much better because silk worms are essential to the production of silk. They could have gone about this in such a cool and interesting way and instead as per usual ANTM flopped between idea and execution
When I was younger and watched the show I legit thought models in real life were just tortured for a career until I grew up learnt about actual modelling and looked back at this show and just woooooow.
Right ! When I was younger I was like, yeah the photoshoots and judges are preparing them /showing them that it's a torture industry 🤣. I was so wrong

Remember, if Jay actually does the job he's titled with, he is most likely developing these concepts for shoots with Tyra, the clients, and production. If the concept isn't clear, it's largely his failure in executing the creative vision. I agree that this shoot flopped because of him. It wasn't the models' fault the images were generally trash.
He also said that he picks the top 5 best photos for Tyra to look at and pick from. Occasionally, she won't pick from the ones given but it is mostly Mr. Jay who picks the "best" ones. I feel a very teeny, very tiny bit sympathetic towards him as he does a lot but at the same time, he has issues.
To give him credit, Jay definitely didn't develop this photoshoot. He was only officially the creative director for the first nine seasons. Him and Tyra had a huge falling out before the ninth season, and they basically demoted him. They might have kept his title, I'm not sure, but he was basically shut out from production in that way, or, at least, that's what he said. This was also his last cycle, so he was definitely phoning it in, which was obvious to me here.

@@chamari1998 Thank you for the background on this! It makes sense why his input was so mismatched with the client and production, then. If he was Creative Director in-name-only, that would've been frustrating AF. Probably major 'the producers want to do it, so whatever' vibes from the Art Director down, too.

I've had a photographer insist I'm not "present" or "giving the emotion" when I was going all out. It's frustrating and confusing to get that kind of feedback.
As someone with a lot of similar experience, I hope you never worked with them again.
The best shoot I did was with a photographer who didn’t talk much and didn’t give too much direction
The fact that Jessica has reacted to 5 photoshoots from Cycle 18, goes to show how unbelievably ridiculous that cycle was.
The photoshoots and the directions were absolutely ridiculous especially cause I feel like they had suck strong models and they ruined what could've been an awesome cycle 💔

This almost feels like a PETA concept, reminding consumers that beautiful silk clothing is built on piles of silk moths killed before they can emerge from the cocoon.
Honestly, I have a lot of negative things to say about the way the contestants on this show are treated, but specifically, regarding silkworms, they're actually adorable and not disgusting at all.
When I was a child, every winter, my mom used to bring them home, we put them in a shoebox, fed them leaves, and watched them spin their chrysalis and become butterflies. They're not slimy or gross at all. Their skin is actually dry, soft and smooth; it has a pleasant texture, and I've had them crawling over me numerous times. And no, I don't come from a third-world country. My mom just thought that it would be a good way for me and my brother to have a pet, and also learn to respect all creatures of nature - big and small. The silkworms are not like maggots or anything, they're not pests, and they are actually harmless. Maybe because I grew up raising them, I actually think they're very cute.
And actually, when I visited a silk factory in Thailand a few years ago and saw that the Thai cook them in hot water to kill the worms and take the silk chrysalis, it made me feel really upset. I swear to God, I'm not some weirdo. I just had such a lovely experience raising them when I was a kid that I can't take it when I see them killed for silk.
Exacly! In Portugal it is common for children to have silkworms as pets in shoe boxes and feed them leaves. It was a huge part of my childhood and the bugs are adorable.

I agree that if they were going to feature the silkworms, they should have been close-up beauty shots like they did with cockroaches.
Honestly if they used silk headpieces, scarves and flowers and added silkworms it could have been a decent theme. Or silk moth resembling the actual silk moth.
I really just don't understand why they wouldn't just photoshop them in. The silkworms weren't featured enough to warrant bringing live ones in.

Can you imagine if it's actually a boring photoshoot and then when the final photos come up you see these fake photoshopped worms? Viewers are gonna complain about that as well so you can't please everyone. I mean I really don't see a point in criticising the photoshoots because at the end of the day it's a f**king reality show for entertainment and we need to get over it.

I laughed so hard with the "think of Mulan " 🤣
Funny story about this, apparently they were all super sleep deprived and did this shoot immediately after flying into China. Sophie said in a few interviews that she had actually taken a sleeping pill on the plane, but still wasn't able to fall asleep, so she was completely out of it and loopy when they did this shoot (you can kind of see it in her face at 0:56 that she isn't all that there). Production apparently had to film their reaction to the worms more than once, because they weren't acting grossed out enough the first time.
I think Jay's intention was he expected everyone to be scared of the worms, so he was gonna tell them to "channel that emotion" into the pose. But then no one got emotional really so he was like well damn, I'm just gonna stick with the same advice I guess. The judges also expected that, so the challenge was supposed to be "selling the dress" while being scared hence why all their comments were anti-emotion and all about selling. But since the idea really didn't pan out like they wanted since everyone reached normally, all the advice and critique feels disjointed

My second initial thought was, how many of the worms that fell off the girls while posing got stepped on 😥😣 Yet another episode where animals and bugs are treated as props

I’ve raised silkworms so many times in my class! Kids love them and they are a great way to teach about the egg to catterpillar to moth/butterfly metamorphosis. ❤️ these silky catterpillars!

Too comercial. Too modeling 101. They want different cool shapes with the body and all that. I get it cause it happens also in the real modeling industry but when they start with the "emotion" bullsh*t or the "great pictures" but no personality thats when the show gets unrealistic. Thats why "The face" is soooo much better.

Hey Jessica! I think you should react to one episode of The Face, Naomi Campbell's own modeling show. It would be interesting to see how different it is from ANTM (in a good way)
I would of had it done as almost a Cinderella/fairytale concept that the silk worms are literally crafting this dresses onto the girls. Like magic silk worm fairy godmothers making bespoke dresses for their model princesses. As without the worms the dresses couldn't be so lets give them all the credit sort of thing.

I thought the silk worms were apart of the shoot to bring awareness to the the silk industry which is why Mr. J was directing them to convey emotion. But then in judging the judges are asking why they aren't selling a dress covered in silk worms. Like do any of the judges know how silk is made? 🤔

You should see the runway where they had the girls wear cockroaches. Gina was freaked out by them and they used that to make her look bad.
It was cycle 6 (the one with Danielle, Jade, Nnenna, and Furonda) and it's either episode 2 or 3.
That one immediately came to mind when she said, "what's next cockroaches?" and I remembered when one of the models actually kissed the jeweled Cockroach on the leash.
They make crying sound so bad, when I was in my photography class doing portraits the best one that got the biggest reaction from my professor was one where I cried. He said in all his years not photo had broken his heart until he saw mine. Crying can be so powerful!

I feel like it could've been neat if they just had one or a couple like in their hand and showed off the dress + worms that way. Idk worms crawling all over them completely detracts from the dresses. It really is just fear factor at this point, the photos mean nothing.

watching this show as an adult is mind blowing. EVERY episode they go out of their way to humiliate these young women. Constantly making them feel insecure and shaming them for being uncomfortable or scared.. it's sick.

15:09 this girl was totally showing the product and they critiqued her for not showing emotions, but then (17:45) they say it's all about showing and selling the product instead of showing yourself... And the girls were just following Jay instructions... They literally contradict themselves every damn episode.
On the silkworms: I do personally like the idea but I feel like creatively it would have been better to go more in the direction of appreciation for the creatures, you know, the "emotion" the models were portraying should have been gratitude, but I guess that would be even more of a challenge...
or even have them holding the silkworm crystallis (save the worms from anxiety and edit them in post) strands of silk transforming into the dress.
@@as3330a that's a cool idea! There could be a way of hanging them on the dress or wearing them like jewellery without harming the pupa inside. Maybe even loan some preserved silkworms from an educational facility they could hold for the shoot. I'm sure some the girls would still get creeped out by holding a dead silkworm 😅
They could have used cocoons which had already been steamed to kill the moth inside before they are unspun to make into silk material.

I’m from Australia and My primary school gave us all a shoebox with silk worms in it. We were to look after them, we took them home and we had to take photos of the stages of their growth. I love silk worms because of this, I even end up with all my friends silk worms at the end of the project. We had so many that we let some go as we lived on acreage and my mum still finds silk worm moths in her garden years later. ( I have moved out now)

They really make no effort to mask the fact that they choose awful pictures for panel. And as always, the models walk away with nothing legitimate for their portfolios.

I don't know why but watching a bunch of gorgeous people get pelted with worms is just a really funny image to me.

Having a bunch of bugs just crawling over the dresses or jewelry (like they had in the bee episode) just makes it look dirty and off putting, as you said it just looks like they are maggots! With bugs I think it would be cool to just get a stock picture of one (bee, silk worm whatever) make it huge and add it in post. Like the girl in the silk dress with the huge silkworm on her shoulder. And give the worm a crown too. And no need to subject anyone to being covered in bugs or abuse any animals.

This is so sad, first Mr. Jay tortures the models with the silk worms, than he tells the model to feel like she is sad, it is like he sabotaged the model, love your videos, you are so awesome!
I know silk worms are used to make silk, but I kept thinking...couldn't the worms damage the silk? Like if a few got left behind on a garment. I couldn't find anything on Professor Google about this though. Maybe I'm just crazy thinking that. Lol.

Can they choose already if they wanted the photoshoot to focus on being emotional or selling the garment?? To one girl they say she didn't give the emotional vibe and to others who did they said that they don't show the dress. This was a frustrating and confusing shoot

Wait one mf minute - Mr Jay told her not to pose and to just look up at the camera after she started crying buuuuuuutttt then he concluded with “idk her poses are just wooden and stuff.” Did he not just tell her NOT to pose?! I was obsessed with ANTM as a kid and only dreamed of being a model someday. The reality is, is that once I got older or realized that after seeing what these girls went through, it seemed soooo unattainable to me. The show presented modeling in this way of models always criticized in the worst & hurtful way and who tf wants to go through that? They made it seem so emotionally toxic. My point is that I’m glad I found your channel Jessica!! I think you’ve restored my faith in what the modeling industry can entail! Love your content! Still dreaming of modeling. 💔💙
The only connection I can think of between the silk worms and being sad about the situation is because the silk worms are going to die once they've been used. Usually the worms in their cocoons are thrown into boiling water, which softens the sticky cocoon so that it can be unwound from the worm. Obviously this is going to kill the worm. :(
