Except in reality if you even put an older Leica down too hard on a table the balsam in the finder will separate and render the viewfinder totally black, seen it happen haha.

I sell film cameras for a living. I have seen and used many weird and amazing cameras. Of all of them the Leica M and LTM cameras are the ones that almost always need a service between us buying them and selling them on, regardless of age. If you are planning on buying a Leica from anyone, make sure you check the following:
1) The rangefinder is aligned correctly.
2) Shine a light through the eyepiece to check neither the finder, or rangefinder have fungus or haze (this is very common).
3) Check both curtains for pin holes that will create light leaks.
3) The shutter fires at correctly at both one second and opens fully at 1/1000. You can do this by simply holding up the camera to a strong light to check it is visible on both sides of the frame. On screw mount bodies you cannot see through the shutter from the back, so you can put film in to create contrast against the black pressure plate, shine a bright light onto the curtain and fire it at its highest speed. You can use the slow motion setting on your camera to record and look back to see if the curtain exposes properly.
4) If the camera has been "serviced" make sure to get a copy of the service papers. If it doesn't have any, assume it's not been serviced.
Bonus tip) Remember that although these cameras are a joy to use and are a hugely cult classic symbol, they won't make you a better photographer. Don't break the bank to own one if you can't afford to buy film to use it.

My impression with most film shops is that they are mainly labs that happen to also sell cameras. I bought all my cameras from Japan on eBay from reputable sellers and never had a single issue. My roommate however has bought all of her cameras from a local shop/film lab and each of hers have had varying issues and the same kind of experience that you’re going through right now
The only camera that has never failed me is the Nikon F2. A solid workhorse with solids mechanics. Other cameras may be more beautiful but the F2 was built to last and it has succeeded. For me, it is the best built 35mm camera in history. 51 years to this point!

That’s true. I’d like to hop in and say the Nikon FM2 is also SUPER solid. It was originally made as a second camera but ended up being so good that professionals would often prefer it over the super heavy “Tank” (Nikon F2). Mine is light and stupid easy to use. Sometimes Leica feels a little over rated. It’s like a fancy Mercedes…. It’s nice to use but even if the brakes need to be replaced it’s gonna be a PAIN!!
And the nikomat ftn, wich was the cheaper, simpler version of the f2.
I love my F2s but now that I wear glasses the F3 HP is the better camera.
The editing and "acting" in this video were so damn good. But I am so sorry about the issues with the camera. What a nightmare.

Welcome to the bad camera club. I haven't sprung for a Leica, but I have an OM4T brick, a Pentacon Six TL that "had been serviced" but turned out to need calibrating, an Olympus IS 30 with a focusing problem and an OM G Zuiko 28mm lens that ruined an entire roll of Portra 160. The upside, though, is that I have three fantastic OM film cameras, six excellent Zuiko lenses, and, fingers crossed, a replacement Pentacon Six TL, actually freshly serviced, on its way from a highly respected shop in Ukraine to go with three Carl Zeiss Jena lenses. I want you to know how impressed I am with your film photography. I'm an amateur, but I've been at it 50 years as of late May, with interruptions for family responsibilities. I hope you continue inspiring your generation to take it seriously.

Like the transparence... as you said, many film shooters especially on youtube just show the upside of shooting film. As much as I've come to realize that no digital camera will give me exactly that film look, I'm going back to digital because no only do I hate scanning but the prices for film have gotten absurd.

Having said that, I do feel for you, the failures that come with it, and your quest for a mechcanical camera. I am a Leica shooter myself, with a few mechanical failures as well over the years; however, I just love using them. Tomorrow, I'm burning up two rolls of Kodak TriX 400 film in my M6 during our Frontier Days Parade. It will be fun. I love my M4 but had it serviced by Sherry Krauter right after buying it as I wanted to make sure it was in tip top shape. It’s a pain to spend Leica money and then also spend money on a CLA, but might as well go for broke, ya know?
The lever stuck and the counter stuck happens to me as well. All I do is opening it and closing it again and usually that unsticks it
Great video. Really love your storytelling. Had a similar story with my M3. Had a few happy rolls before the shutter had issues. Had it repaired got it back but it was not fixed. I’am at the third attempt of the repair. The curtain was gunked up and hat to be fully replaced. A nightmare but i hope that this time the camera is fixed.
I bought mine because the previous owner hat it serviced 2019. lol

I had an M3 once and I loved it. It broke and I couldn't afford to fix it. I sold it. I recently got a nikon fm2/t that was made in 1996. It is mint and works perfect. You should consider the fm2 or fm3a cameras if you want an epic all mechanical camera. They are better than leica for a lot of things and are way more affordable and way more recently made (more trustworthy)

When I bought a year ago my first film camera (it was Praktica Super TL with Carl Zeiss lens 50 mm f 1.8), I sent to the master and he oiled the aperture blades. But after the 6 months of using blades stopped open correctly. So I bought another camera, it's Nikon N 80008s + Nikkor AF 50 mm f2.0D. And now I'm again absolutely in love with film photography ❤️

Just a heads up that especially on SLRs, the aperture blades generally shouldn't have oil on them. If the get oil on them they stick together and jam and don't open and close so quickly or at all. Usually they use a dry lubricant on them to make them slide past each other and open and close. I had to get some of my lenses serviced to clean all the oil from the aperture blades so they will work again

My condolences. That final issue I have seen before happen to someone on youtube - I cannot remember who - but he managed to fix it after being frustrated so many times with issue he just POWER through the rewind level by forcing, not giving f**ks about how fragile it was and amazingly it winded and have been working since!

Leica range finders are beautiful instruments to say the absolute least! I can’t wait til you are able to practice with it and zone focus well enough to where you don’t even look through the view finder!! It’s an incredible feeling to be able to take control of what you produce and not have any help… like perfecting the sunny16 method so you never need a light meter, focusing without looking, and just knowing that tool so well! I love your videos and am sorry this bs keeps happening but there is a bright side and it’s much more fun once you get over these tiny humps
Great video, good luck with the camera, hope it is finally working. I gave up on Yashica Mat 124 after two tries, but so far so good with the older and mechanically simpler Yashica D. Luckily I have been ok with my Bronica GS-1. It is definitely hit and miss! Cheers.

Same thing happened to my Leica MP. Took a month to ship to me, when I got it, had to send it off for almost 2 months to get serviced. I almost did not want to camera anymore but I’m glad I kept it. Haven’t picked up any other camera since.

Leica M3 is by far my favorite film camera. Had some issues last year after dropping it but DAG up in Wisconsin got her all fixed and operating beautifully.
Sorry your went through this! I considered buying use Leicas before but I heard so many horror stories that I didn’t want to risk it, and ended up getting them new. Hopefully they can fix it this time!! Best of luck!
Well, that is very annoying. We are currently doing a series for SilvergrainClassics Magazine on the Leica M3 and service at Leica in Wetzlar. It is very interesting to look over the shoulder of an experienced technician. Many companies that repair don't really have trained people. The technology is not really complex and therefore you can teach yourself by learning by doing and then offer it as a service. And here it hangs then. But often the experience is missing when a component has to be repaired or replaced and which lubricant is the right one. I was really surprised at what I saw. Wetzlar is also where a lot of cameras end up that have been through the hands of other technicians several times.
Its a struggle my camera just broke too.. BUT keep on keeping on! we need your videos!!!

Good thing with Leicas is that if you put them in the right fixing hands they will still last for decades. The hard part is finding somebody who knows what they're doing and not charging you more than what you originally paid for the camera. When I got my M3 it had a bad mold smell and the leatherette was all dry and cracked. I took it to some workshop in Mexico City where they definitely knew what they were doing (even though it's far from being an authorized repair service but it has been working like a charm for about 5 years now) and they disassembled the whole damn thing and put the pieces in some kind of petroleum, then put it back together and adjusted everything. The camera is from 1965 and it works great now.

I feel your pain. Two separate Pentax cameras purchased in the past 6 months, and both had the exact same mirror lock/film advance issue. FRUSTRATING!! I need to stop buying cameras that look cool and stick with my tried-and-true Canon and Minolta cameras.
My e12 Hasselblad magazine I bought from Japan arrived broken, but I only noticed it months later, because i mainly shoot my 67. My Contax t2 has been broken for a year, two shops tried their luck repairing it but did not succeed. The third shop seems to have fixed it now, but I feel your pain.
The algorithm recommended your video, it was correct, subbed right away. So far I’ve send one camera in for repair, but have others that probably should be looked at. Overall though my main 35mm is a Pentax MX and it has been very reliable, but not perfect. I tend to prefer SLRs over rangefinders and have not yet tried a Leica, just used other lower end ones. Hope you find your perfect reliable camera! And great video, your storytelling skills are wonderful.

So sorry this happened to you, especially if the claim that it was serviced before buying it. Ugh. I got my M6 classic and it had a CLA just before I got it. I paid a bit more because of that but has been worth it as been a dream. Hope it comes back working and you can experience all the good from here on out. Digital is safe - film has the highs and lows but the highs are definitely worth it. Good luck!
I know this pain all too well, I had my M2 break as soon as I pulled it out of the package and cocked the advance lever. Worst part is it came from a seller in Japan so instead of trying to deal with the hassle sending it back I decided to just bite the bullet and get it CLA'd by Youxin Ye from YYE camera. I had to wait about just shy of 3 months for it to get fixed but when It finally came back it was in perfect working order.

this reminds me of my experience with a Bessa T and I hated that camera after 2 rolls of jams. the only problems with m cameras I've had are light seals on the flippy door and holes burned in the curtain from not using a lens cap all day for a few months. The folks at Blue Moon Camera and Machine recommended Jayden's work at Advance Camera in Beaverton for Leica repairs if it helps

I had similar problems with my “serviced” M2 and have learnt to have it serviced by a Leica specialist. Mine had a full strip down and rebuild by Alan Starkie in the UK. It has worked faultlessly ever since, the cost was worth it as was the 4 month wait. There will always be a long wait with the best service people…..because they’re so much in demand. Be suspicious of a fast service! Once done properly you will have that camera as a close friend for life 🙂
I got a Niko F3 from a reputable seller and found it required a CLA, light seals had gone. Also missing parts around the camera like the plastic cap for the flash, a missing cover for where the motor drive was attached. I think by default any vintage camera needs a cla / inspection after it’s been purchased.

This broken/faulty camera struggle feels like a right of passage for film photogs haha. Anyone who’s ever said to me ‘hey I’m thinking of getting into shooting film’ I always give this buyer beware warning, it’s happened to the best of us.
The worst I've ever encountered was a jammy advance lever on an old scuffed up cosina SLR that I bought as a shelf piece, which was easily fixed with a screwdriver and the power winding screw. Hopefully I'll keep my lucky streak with film cameras *knock wood*
A few months after I got my M6 the shutter broke and needed CLA, few months after that the light meter stopped working 😂 I feel your pain. I got quoted 1000$ to repair it from Leica Germany. I'm using Reveni Labs meter now. Oh, and I did cry...😅
Get a Kodak Retina IIa. It's bulletproof fits in your pocket, and gives great results. I carry mine with me all the time. My father bought it new in 1951, and he gave it to me sometime in the 1970's. Mine does have to go back in the shop a lot to stay in working order, once in 1976 and again in 2021.
When I need to service a camera. I send it to a repair shop. And if I buy a serviced camera, I ask what they did exactly.
If the shop tell you it was serviced and the camera just stay blocked or have a shutter issue, it means it has not been serviced properly. Leica camera are reliable if they are correctly CLA'd.
You need to return it and get another one from a more reliable source. This shop is not serious at all, especially for the price those cameras are selling now.
I bought my first Leica M3 back in August. It didn't fire above 1/250th, it sounded correct, but the shutter just wouldn't open. So I sent it back.
Got a new one the following weekend from another shop, worked perfectly fine, though it was misaligned, so I had to realign it myself.
Few months later I was away on a trip and I spot a Leica M6 in a store window for cheap and in crazy good condition for it being a 1990s model. So I purchase it, it works for 2 rolls. Then the shutter curtains go the wrong way around. I take it in for repairs. Walk into the shop, the shutter is fine when they fire it infront of me, they hand it to me, the first shot I fire off.... boom, curtains go the wrong way around again. That was a couple hundred spent on a full CLA now. Yay. Worked fine since.
Then M10 is misaligned too. So its in for a service now.
I'm either dumb or incredibly unlucky. I'm guessing its the former rather than the latter.
I shot a mind blowing morning in fog….some of my favourite film images ever created out of that shoot…after powering through 3 rolls of Kodak Gold 200, the conditions were popping and I loaded my beloved Nikon F3HP, and I literally felt the shutter rip to shreds as I was advancing to frame one. It happens. Luckily, I am fortunate enough to have collected all sorts of cameras for decades and I have lots of other options. Still, that one hurt! I loved that old beast!

So this happened to me when I bought my first M body, which was the M4. The description stated recently CLA'd. I got mine from eBay in Japan and they offered 30days to return, so that gave me some piece of mind. Two weeks after using it, it stopped advancing smoothly. Tried returning, it made it to Japan only for the vendor to tell me he returned it back by mistake. The only good thing that happened was that I got money back to get it repaired here in the states. So I know the pain you're feeling. Luckily it is a fully mechanical camera and repairs can be made. But it still felt bad, I was so excited to have my first Leica and use it. I still have it and need to get it repaired 😮💨
It reminds me of what also happened to my beloved film camera. My Bronica EC, GS645 and Nikon F3 all had some issues, mirror stucked up, broken internal parts, shutter and frame counter broke. Somehow they can all get fixed and break again eventually. Only thing we can do is just put as many rolls through them as we can when they last.

I shoot professionally with the older Leicas, here is some useful information:
There are only about 3 people anyone who is serious about photography use to service their leicas, m mount or screw mount. Sherry krauter, youxin yee, and DAG camera. Anyone else is sort of a crapshoot in terms of quality. There are others for Leica, but these folks will make the camera into the professional workhorse is was 50 years ago. Another tip, once you have the first service/repair done, send it in every 2 years, or every year if you shoot a lot, and have a CLA done on it. Leicas are very reliable, if they’re reliably serviced.
One pro war photographer to another. “Make sure to bring 2 cameras. A Nikon and a Leica and then if one breaks you will have the Nikon to shoot with.” 😬
I understand wanting a fully mechanical camera. Don’t have a Leica, but I went with a hasselblad. I shot my project to get my associates degree in spring 21 and it broke literally right after. I got it fixed and it works now but it was so frustrating that the shutter just stopped working (luckily after I finished the project)
Any old camera can break down at any moment. It doesn't matter if it's a Leica or another camera. I recently bought a Soviet FED-5c rangefinder for just $15. And I also paid the master $40 for the CLA. Now I have a device in my hands that is as reliable as a Kalashnikov assault rifle. And I won't worry too much about it.
I've had the same issue with that shops cameras. I honestly don't think they do anything before selling them and offer the warranty and hope for the best. The Hasselblad I bought there was a hot mess but was sold as new seals, CLA, blah blah blah. I always want to believe these are one off situations from them but I keep hearing the same things from people I send there.
That’s true if you buy on eBay. There’s some shops domestically that are honest
My Fuji GA645 just died. Broken ribbon cable behind lens. At least I got 2 1/2 years of shooting it. I’m all in now on fully mechanical cameras. Selling all of my electronic ones. Just sold my RZ67.
This is why I’m very happy with my Olympus OM-1n whenever I wanna shoot fully manual, but if I’m feeling lazy I’ll pull out my Canon A1 lol 😊
Cameras are really personal. I acquired an M-3 & thought my life was going to be changed. It had been totally serviced & worked perfectly although the viewfinder was not as good as I would have liked. I eventually got an Olympus OM1 that had a CLA & a battery conversion. The M3 was sold & I never looked back. I love the OM1
OM1 is a masterpiece, too bad it's comparably harder to buy OM lenses nowadays

@@tedphillips2951 I love the Zuiko 50mm f/2 macro and the 90mm f/2 macro. Vintage lenses with big aperture and large magnification ratio are hard to come by. And on OM1 we don't have to worry about parallax.

Back in the day, no press photographers used Leica. Some wedding photographers used Leica.
I worked for a wedding photographer in the 1960s shooting mainly on Rollei cameras. There was a Leica M2 but no one used it.
It was sold to buy 2 Rolleicords as back up cameras. They got a lot of rough use with no problems. Nikon F series cameras were the mainstay for the press and war photography guys. Tough, reliable and versatile. Fashion photographers used Pentax and Hasselblad a lot.
Nowadays I use a Pentax Spotmatic with the 55mm f1.8 super takumar lens.
My grandaughter uses a Nikon FM with a Nikkor 50mm 1.8 e series pancake lens. Never any problems.
The only rangefinder I have is the real poor man's Leica, the T34 tank of cameras, the Zorki 4k with the Jupiter 8 50mm F2 lens.
$50 worth of joy.
I'm a Leica fanboy, but even I get tired of the legendary status they seem to have acquired. I've had more failures and service work on Leicas than I have ever had on other brands I've owned. I shoot them still because I love the process and the results. The M3 is going on 70 years old at this point. Nothing lasts forever. I hope you get it working though, the M is an absolute joy to use.
Sorry to hear this happened. I shot 4 rolls in my Contax G2 only to get the rolls back completely blank. Broken shutter. I sent off to Nippon photo clinic in NYC and they repaired for me.
I had an m4-2 that was like this! It had a light leak that I had to get fixed 3 times! And recently I traded a bunch of cameras and lenses for a brand new Leica ma and it had a light leak out of the box. leica serviced it for free luckily. I ended up selling that camera. I also have an m3 thats been pretty reliable even though its from 1961. This all being said my two favorite cameras are mechanical. the nikon f2sb and leica m3 are my favorites.
Buying old gear can be a hit or miss, but when something comes with a statement such as "recently CLA-ed" it should work.
That being said, I bought a factory new Leica MP directly from Leica in 2020 and it came with a mechanical defect, needed repair (which took months!) and still didn't work and needed to back in for another repair (again, many weeks). At the same time, the Leica M3 I had been shooting since 2008 never skipped a beat to this day and remains mechanically perfect.
With the used cameras, it all depends on how previous owners treated their gear and if you can trust the seller with their statements.
That said, your M3 being repaired properly will outlast any other camera you will ever own or have owned. The M3 is the last camera you'll ever own/keep. Of all the Leica M bodies, the M3 (or the M2) should be the best in terms of reliability and build quality. Every later Leica M makes some sort of compromise to cut costs.
There's nothing more soul crushing than getting your hands on a camera you've been hunting only for it to just fail! Had the same happen to me, drove out of state for work and found someone selling a nice Bronica S2 in chrome and drove another state away to see it only for it to have a stuck shutter. Then bought one from a Japanese seller off ebay, arrives to have a stuck shutter too! 😡 Finally found one near me and take some beautiful portraits of my parents only to have spacing issues with one of the film backs 🤦♂️
It took me 13 years to get my M3. It was worth the wait. And to make you feel better, the reason why the wait was so long was downright horrific, so keep the faith.
I purchased a brand new from factory Leica MP last year, and it just so happened to arrive on my birthday. I went about using it everything seemed perfect, but the infinity focus never seemed to “go all the way to infinity”, as in, the patch never fully lined up. Got my developed rolls back plus scans, and sure enough, everything was back focused, because the rangefinder was out of alignment FROM THE FACTORY. Lol. Regardless, I’m sorry about your situation. Once you have it working, I don’t think you’ll ever want to switch to something else; they’re a dream to use.
I feel you on this. My mamiya 645 pro’s mirror stop broke along with the film back a couple months ago and it left a bad taste in my mouth. Maybe look at the Leicaflex SL? Mechanical & all metal Leica SLR with more affordable Leica lenses.
Omg 🤯 i owned this camera years ago. I recognise the dent near the shutter counter. I sold it because the counter would get stuck at around 27 and never advance passed that, worked fine just wouldn't count. Wow, that's insane, please stick with it, it was a great camera, I miss it dearly and wish I hadnt had to sell it, give it a good home.
The beauty of film photography is that it is a physical thing - the camera, the film, the problems.....it's more organic. It decays, it breaks down, just like us humans. It can be frustrating, but when you really capture that shot it's the greatest feeling ever. I like the fact that you also have to wait to see it. In this age of instant gratification I find it comforting to be disappointed once in a while. lol I really enjoy your videos and your photography. PS: Keep shooting film. 🙂

Also on making a real honest video of the potential Leica experience, which departs from the normal "Leica M6!!!!!" message in the vast majority of Leica fan person videos.
I've been so tempted to buy a mechanical Leica (the only Leica I won is a digital sl2-s), but I've had such a good experience with my Nikon FM2 and F3/T. I'm kind of just enjoying the good run I have with them and don't want to rock the boat!

The thing with old film camera is, you have to respect how old the thing is. 1950s is like 60-70 years ago, the fact that it still works even with some issues is amazing. I mean how many things were made that far back that people still use today, let alone a precision mechanical device like a camera?
I service old cameras as a hobby. One thing I realize is more often than not, a recently serviced camera will work flawlessly when you're testing it, then acts weird when you really use it. In fact, out of a dozen old cameras I have, only one or two works with no issue from since I bought it.
You either learn to live with it, or get the newer film camera like the MP.
I'm old and grew up shooting film. I miss it a great deal. A number of years ago, I got a lomo 120 film camera and spent 120$ on 120 film and had disastrous results. I'm probably a cheapskate, but the burn of that hurt too much. I use a Sony A7 IV recently for work, and I plan to get a lot of weird old lenses to put on it to get as close to film as I feel like I can.
Someday I'm gonna get a film camera, like the Contax in one of your other videos. The photos you showed from it were amazing!

When I purchase a new film camera, I test it with a roll of B&W film that I process myself.

Oh, also -- I think KEH does Leica repairs. I've only sent one repair job their way (a Fujifilm X100F). They were unable to repair it since they were unable to get a new motherboard for it, but they refunded me all my money and were very communicative and helpful through the whole process. I sent the same camera directly to Fujifilm repairs, thinking they would have a motherboard, but they refused to fix it & did not refund any of my money. So, there's that for you. Anyways, maybe KEH would be another reliable repair shop for you.
