Hey guys! I just uploaded a second Marshall shootout which also includes a hand-wired Ceriatone clone! For those interested, here is the link: ruclips.net/video/X2YVffow5zU/видео.html
My 50 watt 900 was my first tube amp ever, and it's still my favorite. The 800 is certainly iconic, but my 900, unboosted, with my 79 Les Paul is the perfect tone combo to me.
@@CaliforniaRailfanner well, that's your opinion. That's the thing about tone... it's completely subjective. Don't believe me? Listen to Early Van Halen and the Randy Rhodes Ozzy records. Rhodes was an amazing player, but his tone was kind of god awful compared to EVH in the same time period. I don't mind if most people prefer the 800. I love my 900 and have yet to met a guitarist who has stood in front of it while it was cranked who didn't think it was a complete monster.
@@mikelovesguitars402 I don't understand the comparison of Rhodes to EVH? They both used early Marshalls. they used different speakers and had their amps setup differently. So what does that have to do with a 900?
@@guitarexpert2245 the point, simply is that tone is subjective. They both played similar gear at a similar time, but EVH's tone is subjectively fantastic, while Rhodes' tone is subjectively... much less so. But I'm sure he thought it was great at the time. Basically, the 800 and 900 are different amps, so they sound different. Different doesn't necessarily mean one is awesome while the other is garbage. Yes, the 800 is a great amp, but the 900 being different doesn't automatically make it bad. I've heard lots of guitar players make 900s sound great. Just because you prefer the 800 doesn't mean other players are wrong for liking the 900.
Awesome comparison. I enjoyed every note you played man! This video is one of the best proofs around that JCM 900 is not worse, but just different than JCM800. I would go for JCM900 over JCM800, even for rock / hard rock, not only for metal. Thank you for this video man!
Thanks! I like them both as well! I don’t know whether I just got lucky and found a great 900 but I’ve always liked it. It’s darker, a bit more compressed, and feels tighter to play, but they’re pretty similar especially in a mix. After I recorded this, I had the 800 serviced and it tamed the harsh brightness a bit, but not enough to warrant redoing the shootout
@@guidobandido8182 to be honest, i am not competent enough to comment cliping diodes, tubes and what not. Im pretty sure you would agree with me, only what matters in the end is the SOUND. I dont care if the amp has tubes, cliping diodes, worms, ants or water inside to make it sound good, as long as it sounds good to my ears =)
@@guidobandido8182 yeah! The 900s, along with the 800 models 2205 and 2210, as well as the silver jubilee all incorporate solid state clipping to increase distortion. But don’t listen to the snobs, all of those amps are classics and each has its own unique qualities. In the 900 the distortion is tight in the low end and rounded off highs. I think it sounds great depending on the context!
@@guidobandido8182 There are 3 main types of 900. (Bonus at the bottom) MkIII Dual Mastervolume has diodes somewhere in the pre amp section (you can dial out the clipping of these diodes). Has 2 channels SL-X has an extra tube in the pre amp section. 1 channel. B.t.w. not judging. They are the right tool, in the right situation. I play a JCM 900 4500 and boosted with a Wampler Triumph sounds 👌 with all my guitars. I also run an inexpensive Mosky Silver Horse ans you get a nice warmer tone. My JCM 2000 DSL 100 isn't working right now so i haven't had a chance to try those pedals on it.
I prefer the 900's slightly beefier sound. A little less high-end, more rounded, if u know what I mean :) The amp simulator was OK, but pales in direct A-B-C comparison between the three. Good and informative video.
If those deaf Marshall guys can build a flux capacitor and find a Delorean to put it in, they can bend space-time and time travel back to the 1990s and buy a Soldano Astroverb so that it will sound good without having to crank it (because the preamp is designed correctly).
I have had multiple jcm 800 and played lots of 900. There is no way that jcm 900 channel A sounds excactly like a jcm 800 2204 in a live situation. Is it possible that RUclips land compresses the sound to all sound the same?
It's the I.R's he's using. These I.R's tend to make all different amps sound pretty much the same. When in a live situation through a CABINET, they are very different. those who have the 900 & love them have just not A/B with an 800 2203/4. Then they would hear the difference.
Holy shiz my main sound for the first few years I was touring was a SG faded with the crescent moon inlays alongside a 4500. I loved it. Still have the SG, but the 4500 lives at the studio
Man, awesome comparison! I don't like the 800 2203/2204, they're too scooped and harsh for my taste, I like the 800 2205/2210! The 900 4500 kind reminds me the 800 2205, very middy and less harsh on the top end.
@@CaliforniaRailfanner as I said before it's a Marshall, it has mids obviously, but compared with my 800 2210 or my Silver Jubilee the 2203 82 was harsh and scooped as hell.
900's are just as good or even better than 800's. That's all.. simple as is. I play lower gain stuff (acdc ect.. ). The A channel is just amazing. Even more with a power attenuator. Amazing amps.
compared amplitube 8000 and th - u model, and th-u was much more dull and less responsive to dynamics. ( i use single coils and tried to balance input levels). Did you compare th - u with amplitube? may you comment please, i want to buy one of them tonex + amplitube or th-u premium while winter sales and th - u have a lot effects i interested in, but amplitube sounds and response more live at all in my opinion. As i understand "drive" knob means pre amp, so volume is "master"? what level knob designed for?
Which Amplitube version? Amplitube 5 is a lot newer than TH-U. I haven't used V5 but TH-U is better than Amplitube 4. But yeah, while the tone is pretty close, it lacks dynamic response, it's less punchy. I've used the 800 and 900 TH-U models for a long time but recently switched to Neural Amp Modeler captures and with some tweaking it sounds the same as my old presets but definitely better and more responsive. It's a lot more CPU intensive though. From what I've heard NAM is a bit more accurate than ToneX but not as easy to use. About the level knob on the TH-U models, it's just plain volume adjustment, without simulation of how an amp reacts.
@@SamFisher338 i compared with amplitube 5. anyway i bought thu,...actually i really don`t know why i bought thu, because amplitube had better responsiveness for my play. I don`t want to get into Nam, because i need smooth midi control and visual representation of signal chain for both studio and live, so thu maybe only one can make both for me even if it`s dynamics poor at all
