Thank you! This was incredibly informative. I had no idea the fabrics could stretch that much or how different stitches affected it. I will probably need a magnifying glass if I ever try to do twin needles because I can't see well enough to thread. I sometimes have trouble getting thread through the threader thingies. LOL. What stitch would you recommend for a hem that is sturdy & stretchy enough to pull a garment over one's head but not be quite as visible/obvious? Or is there such a thing. This is for someone who does NOT have a serger or coverstitcher.
@@Mellysews I took screenshots at different points, labeled them, wrote descriptions of what was being done, marked where top & bottom of sleeve were etc so I could keep track. You held the fabric in front of the camera very clearly so it made it much easier. I'm keeping that in an image collage to remind myself. I wanted to make a cuff that goes all the way to the elbow (I know, kind of crazy) so it's sort of a whole lower sleeve part instead of a cuff and with this tutorial I've figured out how to do it.
All serger stitches stretch. I recommend using some scraps of the fabric you will use and experimenting with your stitch length and width to figure out what works best for your exact project.
Hi Melissa, can you give me tips on how to sew a thick elastic like 4 layers of knit fabric.. I always have problem doing it..my project is making headband made of knit fabric.. thank you 😊
I want to sew a hoodie, but I only have a old sewing machine I inherited from my grandmother and it only has three options. Zigzag, straight and a weird mix of those two that looked a bit like dinosaur teeth. I wander if it's possible to sew a hoodie with only zigzag seems
I need a really stretchy straight stitch. It has to be straight. Can I achieve this on a regular machine? Also if there is a certain machine that can achieve this what is it called? Thanks.
I Melly Congratulations for your videos. I have a question to ask you. I work with spandex, and I would like to ask you which stitch is best for me to attach different (large) fabric parts. In my view, since it is to do party tents (like canopies) it must to be a point with enough elasticity but at the same time really strong. Can you give me some advice? (The canopy will have about 10m diameter and will be composed of several triangles that I intend to sew). Best Wishes!! Nice work ;)
Damn, can't buy that twin needle. I need to fix my shorts and the elastic seems to have used twin needle. I'll just do a zigzag where some f the thread came out a little of we the old thread then. Edit: it's a chain stitch... And yup, they suck Jaja. Now for a zigzag.
As a middle school sewing teacher i have to commend you on how well you explain things! I know it isn't an easy task! Thank you for the videos!!
Thanks! Probably comes from all my years teaching high school :)
What a teacher! I wish learning was this easy when I was young. I'm a senior now, with a slow brain, but I was totally absorbed in your video.
Glad it was helpful!
Less than three minutes in and I’ve already learned something. Awesome.

Thanks for the great video. I have an old machine but it does have a zig zag. I'll see if I can use it for some tee shirts I want to make.
That should work!

I love the t-shirt you wear in this video! Is it your own creation? The drape and cap sleeves are perfect!

could you do a video on types of thread used to sew knit fabrics, is knit thread needed? Is there such a thing?
I did a video about types of thread here: mellysews.com/types-of-thread-for-sewing/

Very informative thank you for this... also that's a beautiful machine... what machine is that? Thank you
I sew on Baby Lock machines
What were your settings for the serger? I’m making a leo for my daughter and want it to have that stretch just in case in the seams

So much helpful information for a beginner like me. With the zig zag or the lightning stitch do you back stitch and beginning and end of each seam?
I never backstitch any line that is going to be crossed by another line of stitching. And with the lightning bolt on my machine you can't backstitch.

nice

That can only be done on a cover stitch machine.
@@Mellysews Thanks.
What kind of thread do you use on stretch fabrics?
This is just all purpose thread.

That's outside my scope since I've never sewn a tent. Best of luck!

Hems made with cover stitches or chain stitches can easily come completely unraveled if the ends are not secured well.
@@Mellysews yeah, it did come partially undone. I'm going to undo it all and zigzag it soon lol. Thank you n.n
Wow and I thought the more zig zag it looks the more it stretches. Somehow not 🤦🏻♀️😂
