  • If your compressor in your refrigerator is struggling to turn on or only runs for a few seconds there is a good change your relay or overload are bad, often referred to as a start device. These parts can be very expensive, and hard to test. The 3in 1 hard start kit by Supco is a great alternative, and very easy to install. The Hard start kit will hook directly to your compressor and will replace you old relay, overload and start capacitor, It is also designed to work with your existing run capacitor if your refrigerator has one. Follow along for step by step instructions on how to hook up the new hard start.
Let us know if you have any questions,
Remember you can get your parts at The Mending Shed, 1735 South State Street, Orem, UT 84097 or online at www.mendingshed.com

You have the run and start windings backwards, which is going to quickly burn up that compressor! Also, you MUST put the terminal cover back on the compressor to control the spark or fire that will happen if the glass terminals blow out when the compressor finally dies!

correct. put the cover back on to Help prevent a fire from a pin blow out / hot oil & refrigerant under pressure blowing out & igniting.

Excellent step by step detailed video. The multimeter trick was especially helpful. Thanks so much for doing this video.

Thank you so much for this great video! The procedure to determine Run, Start and Common pins was extremely useful!! I might have installed the URC0410 incorrectly without this video because the diagram that comes with the hard start kit shows the Start and Run locations reversed from the layout on my compressor. Chicks that Fix have cool Tricks! Thanks again.

Thanks. It was a bit intimidating that you used a multimeter in the beginning. I have one but it's a cheap one from Harbor Freight that doesn't even work. However, you don't really even need to check because there's a diagram on both the packaging and the device. Why do you say a couple of years though? Are they known to fail after that time? I'm fixing a chest freezer and they're not that expensive used. If it only lasts a couple of years then I may be better off just getting another one and not risking it dying and killing a bunch of frozen meat.

Most compressor are labeled letting you know which terminal is run and which is start, however some are not, by using the multi meter you can determine which terminal is what. Not all compressors are set up identical according to the diagram on the hard start, common is usually on top, but the run and start terminals can be switched. As for long term expectations of the hard start kit it totally depends on your compressor, we have some people who install it and it last 10 years, the hard start goes out they replace it again and it lasts for many more years, on the other hand, if your compressor is bad, or very close to bad the hard start kit could speed up the compressor going bad. For instance the fridge in this video lasted 3 more days and then the compressor died completely! Sometimes that's the way it goes. As for the freezer dying and losing a bunch of meat you could purchase a freezer alarm that will alert you if the freezer is getting to warm. Up to you. Hope this helps! -- Colleen @ TheChicksThatFix

as a few others have noted, you have reversed the start and run. this can ruin the compessor

On your note card, you said that common to start was the lowest resistance and common to run has the middle resistance reading. Those are backwards. Common to run is the lowest and common to start is the middle resistance and run to start is the highest.

Got the hard kit installed. On the first plug in, the compressor turned on for a quick sec and then just stopped as if not strong enough to power up the compressor. While left on, There's a click from the kit every minute or 2 while the compressor is not on. Where to go from here?

You NEED To take this video Down / Re-Do it.
its Wrong / incorrect ! this video WILL fry your compressor !!! / Electrically burnout the start winding constantly applying power to it.
Below - is Correct wiring example.
    C-Top pin
S- Start Pin / Lower Left
    R-Run / Lower Right pin.
    Measuring from ---
    C-Start = Medium resistance.
C-Run = Lowest resistance. lowest number.
Start - Run --- resistance is Highest. Highest number.
ive been doing this for 45 years.
Also - put the Compressor terminal cover back on to Help prevent a fire from a pin blow out / hot oil & refrigerant under pressure blowing out & igniting.

      You're 100% correct, C-Start = Medium resistance = 8.2 Ohm

You need to take this down immediately. You have the start and run windings backwards, and have probably cost countless people a lot of money by teaching them exactly how to fry their compressors.
