  • This talk was given at a local TEDx event, produced independently of the TED Conferences. There is no end of unproductive thinking and discussion about racism in this country. Cynthia Silva Parker has seen her share. And, she has spent decades helping people understand how the system of racism operates, and what they can do about it. As a senior associate at Interaction Institute for Social Change, she helps people build the collaborative skills they need to make change.
Cynthia Silva Parker is a senior associate for the Interaction Institute for Social Change. She is a life-long advocate for racial equity and social justice, and for deeper awareness of each in our systems and organizations and the wider society. She focuses her observations, personal stories and career focus on strengthening collaborative networks by building the will, skill, knowledge and strategies to undo racism together.
About TEDx, x = independently organized event In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)

Even if humans were all the exact same race and the exact same color and the exact same hair type and the exact same eye shape. . . people would still find a way to discriminate. Humans evolved as small, insular, tribalistic creatures; that's why there aren't any more Denisovans or Neanderthals left. They were all either killed off, or they interbred with the humans who did survive. 🤷🏾‍♀️
I wish we were more like dogs. Our smallest dog and our largest dog don't look ANYTHING alike -- different color, size, fur, face, tail, muzzle, ears, everything. But they're both dogs, and they're both part of my family. So they accept each other like sisters despite their differences.

The financial benefit to racism will make it hard if not impossible to change. Laws and practices that take from one group to give to another is a practice that encourages the benefactors to not want to change.

I believe it is better to look at the complexity of discrimination. Then focusing mainly one aspect of discrimination. Which seems to happen a lot. If we as a people would look at the discriminant ways of us humans. Starting with bias blind spot. I believe it would be good. We can also see what Cynthia is talking about. It will be seen as part of a whole. And I agree with most that is said in this video. As far as the type of discrimination Cynthia is talking about. We as people take her suggestions of getting to know other people then we are use to. Life can change our view of people who have some differences than us. I believe we will never eliminate discrimination as a whole. I do believe we can become aware when it naturally manifests itself in our conscious minds. And then we have a chance not to act upon it. We are very tribal in our nature. This will get in the way of equality for all. It has been and I believe it will always be about the distribution of power.

Racism will never fully go away. The most realistic way to “end” racism is separate ethno-states. Multiculturalism has never worked throughout history. As nice of an idea as it might be on paper, it never worked in practice

No matter how much we discuss this issue its still not resolved. How long have we been going over and over this? How long do we want to keep it alive? Let's all shut up and see just where it stands. We give it a name and we feed it. And it grows. Sustaining it with our words. Our words are it's power harness. Humans speak things into existence. Let's unspeak it.
Are humans capable of eliminating the negativity that spews out of our mouths? How little is our self control? Can we stop wallowing in our injustices? Where is our faith and joy? I think we want to be depressed and sorrowful. Talking about this and that. Talking, talking, talking....

Catherine Darringer Are you serious? Talking about a subject, any subject, makes you think and assess. That is unless you are unable to look at yourself and your views. It’s like a child who has been abused, “don’t talk about it and it will go away.” It doesn’t,does it? It just destroys the child from inside out. Keep ignoring it and it doesn’t get better. It just manifests itself in anger, hatred and ignorance. You make me sad...

Your “solution” of “not talking about” racism only serves your fragile ego. Let’s ask scientists if they would solve a problem by not talking about it. Talking about racism isn’t anywhere near as harmful as actual racism but you only care about yourself.

There's NO evidence of Racism before the "Age of Exploration" aka the "Age of Exploitation", None. If it is a Human Trait, why didn't it exist in Roman Society, or in Ancient Egypt (many of the Ancient Egyptian Pharaohic Dynasties were Ethiopian in origin)?
It is Learnt and Embedded behaviour, designed deliberately to Justify the exploitation of newly "discovered" lands.
And it has always been thus. Irish and British people look identical, yet there has been an underlying anti-Irish bias in English life since the English INVADED Ireland. Looking at the debates around Brexit, virtually the same statements are made by Right Wing UK politicians in 2018-2022 as were made by Gerald of Wales (incidentally a man who NEVER visited Ireland), justifying the English conquest of Ireland.
Short version - Racism is a TOOL used by those intending to exploit others to Justify their Greed.

Name is NOT an indicator of race, it's an indicator of culture, geography, religion, the beliefs of your parents. These aren't arbitrary, if I'm a white person I'd rather hire a Christian who believes in a divine standard of morality than someone who thinks whites are the devil and all their wealth ought to be redistributed. If your philosophy says it's evil for me to be wealthy how can I hire you? The whole concept of equal outcomes by any means that the speaker is espousing is just ridiculous academic dishonesty covering for a subversive socialist agenda. Let's stop at equal opportunity, no children of any race or culture should be forced to perform in schools if they don't want to. Equal outcomes means you're deleting the choices of individuals, they no longer matter to you. If I choose to not care about school you should not make me graduate anyway, that just means everyone who did care get no recognition for it.

Gorky D I agree with some of what you say, but I disagree with some of it as well
i think your doing a dis service to yourself by disregarding a persons resume based on something like their name.
I believe that assuming someone lives by a particular philosophy based on a factor like their name, is a missed opportunity. Assuming everybody with an Arabic name is hateful of white folks is wrong, yes, some or many of them may believe in that philosophy, but not all of them do.
Just like how, assuming every white person to be racist is wrong, even tho their are some who do share that philosophy.
All I'm trying to say is don't judge people based on something like race, gender, religion, etc. Not saying those things are stupid, no disrespect, I just mean It seems illogical to assume their aren't outliners or people objecting and differentiating themselves from a particular stereo type.
I choose to make my judgement of someone based on who they are as a person, in what they say and the actions they take. Not their race, religious beliefs or anything like that. Anyways, I'm 13 and I'm not looking to piss anybody off I just wasn't willing to read your comment and not speak my piece.
Anyways, thanks for reading. Your pal, Luca.

Well said Luca, I wouldn't want to judge anyone by their name either but if I was given 50 resumes of equal merit I would probably choose one with a name similar to mine rather than one from a different culture, especially if there is still existing enmity between those cultures.

Sorry, but one is proof that black people certainly have nothing holding them back. But even if there was no black president, there is still no need for affirmative action. Equality is having an equal opportunity, not being guaranteed an equal outcome. There has never been a red haired president. Does that mean gingers should have affirmative action?

Obama's racism made us realize that black people do not care for white people, and that they do not see us as their brothers and sisters. They see us as people to use. Obama did everything he could to stir up racism, just like this woman is doing. You need to understand that a lot of people have simply been pushed to far. We want to be equals, not your money basket and punching bag.

    • @healing_and_humor4530
      @healing_and_humor4530 7 лет назад +5

+Maria Smith I'm am absolutely not a fan of Obama - but he is not to blame for your conclusions about "black people" as a group. You made decisions, assumptions, and generalizations about ALL black people based on the actions of SOME. You were not "pushed too far." You jumped...or fell...for the divisiveness. Your comment suggests all you needed was an excuse, and Obama gave you that. That makes you equal...equal to everyone who blames someone else for their negative beliefs about a group of people.
