She has connected all of the dots!! I have always lived in the areas she's describing. I have been illegally searched at least 20 times and the only reason I am free today is probably because I didn't start smoking weed until a couple of years ago. NOW THAT WE KNOW it is our duty to build awareness. There are so many innocent young men who look exactly like me IN CAGES... who deserve to be home with their families. WE ARE HUMAN!!! Michelle Alexander deserves the Nobel Peace Prize. She is so bold and passionate and makes the most complicated scheme in History seem simple!!!

Michelle Alexander's book is a great book. I am a philosophy student at CSUS and I read this book last year at my local junior college and had to write an argumentative essay on it. Now working on a second essay for a course this semester at Sac State. Trying to do my part and raise awareness!

You don't have to be black and in prison to be mistreated in America. Being black is enough. I am a black man who have not been arrested for any kind of crime and have caught hell all of my life. It is hell out here for a black man period. I can't even imagine what is must be like for the brothers and sistas that have been incarcerated.

My ex-wife (who happens to be black but for me she is a "woman" and I should say with some humor "women are all the same " lol),use to say "I was black before you" which means I became aware of racism when my baby was born. I could witness and overheard so many racist statements. I just consider racist people (other than players from an opposite team), people who don't have the guts for just feeling good with themselves and have to feel superior for something who is so stupid like the color of their skin and historically they have to get some kind of support system in order to make more money from free or almost free labor. We must do educate minorities and use the law against the real criminals: white collar bandits who can make millions of profits selling guns and holding private facilities for exterior and interior wars and politically correct people that makes their money with the people who needs to work and get payed low wages because don't have enough education or possibilities.

Not only do I agree, but am including it in my US history classes. My students have been horrified about Jim Crow and voter repression of the South and then I share excerpts from Michelle Alexander's book to show we are living in this situation still.

In my humble honest personal opinion, this lady right here, Michelle Alexander, wrote the most thoughtful, researched, inspired and important book of the 21st century so far. Please do yourself a favor and read THE NEW JIM CROW. You may very well be a changed person by the end. And then, you'll have to act upon it...
I cannot believe this incredible talk only has 6,450 views after 7 months. We are none of us free until we are all free. Talks like this and others on white privilege, historical bias, etc. should be required in schools. There is so little understanding from those with privilege and that has to change if we are ever to be truly free.

I am impressed with the heart and mission Professor Alexander. I just wish that more people would listen and take heed. It's sad that tens of millions of jobs would be lost just to right the wrongs of our society.

Regardless of crime rates, whether they are low, or high, the rate of incarceration has quintupled. That's what the statistics will show. This is not just a Black woman complaining. Whether people who look like her commit more crimes or fewer, they are still disproportionately incarcerated. Explanation, please? You dummies.
Very easy explanation. The people who live in poor communities with high crime rates, and who want the better opportunities for their children, need to move from those communities as fast as possible.
Some of those communities have many abandoned houses. Those people fled the violence because, if they stayed, conditions would have destroyed their lives and those they love as well.

Blacks are several times as likely to be arrested for marijuana possession than whites, even though studies have shown they use at the same right. Thats just one example where punitive laws are disproportionately applied to minorities, even when it comes to laws that shouldnt even exist in the first place. If that doesnt bother you, its because youre a horrible person who lacks empathy. I hate to be the bearer of bad news.

In it, she breaks down in detail just about every piece of legislation, Supreme Court decision, Criminal Justice initiative, and other well-cited fact and piece of stark reality that is related to what she is speaking about. This TedTalk is barely the tip of the iceberg.

I read her book years ago. I have it at work and my co workers have read it. I also encouraged my family to read her prolific book.

I grew up in the suburbs and when I graduated from college moved to Harlem, NY. At the time, my new neighborhood was a mixed bag of college students, beautiful brownstones, and historically designated streets. One day when I emerged from the subway, I noticed that there were always luxury cars double parked and that people darted from those cars into a particular building. Then I began to see this phenomenon repeated every day as I emerged from the subway. I was young and didn't know what I was seeing. It was shocking to see that ALL those people who jumped from their cars and ran into that building were white. They were affluent people who bought and used drugs at an alarming rate. This was in 1982.

I want to hear someone talk about the business of prisons as part of the capitalist system as well as quotas from police departments.
The USA is a VERY scary country -one of the very least civilized places on the planet. If a culture can be judged based upon how it treats is most vulnerable citizens, then I say the USA ranks very low indeed on the list of "civilized" (ie, possessing basic civility) cultures on the planet. I live in Canada, and yes I realize that we have many of the same problems, only to a lesser degree... but still I am hesitant to consider our two countries as being in the same class when it comes to basic civility and being people-friendly places to live. WHAT CAN BE DONE to change this?? I say lots - and people like this brave, articulate young lady are leading the way!! Social change is a long and difficult process, but it IS possible.

So important and truthful. She didn’t even touch on the cost to families while their loved ones are locked up. Example is the transfer of wealth from mostly poor families to telecommunications corporations via ridiculously expensive prison call rates just to stay in touch. It’s a sad state.

Tragic and intolerable situation.
A fine point in question is whether the current injustice is set up knowingly to disempower African-Americans, or is it set up to garner votes? I am an Australian, so forgive me for sharing an opinion but...
I reckon it's due to the macho tactics of political candidates, that speak about being a tuff leader who will protect the middle class by being tuff on crime... Then the regular targets for drug felonies become victims to this - the cops get their statistics to show more arrests. Basically I am saying the thrust behind this horrible system may not be directly racist, but indirectly racist, by being callous to the majority of people who's liberty is being stolen.
I would be inspired by leader who came out as a champion for restorative justice, social equality, support and opportunity as a formula for healthy society. This would be cool!
We need to start reforming by getting people guilty of non-violent crimes out of jail, and make those a non-jailable offense (if there is such a word).

This is a really good video that provides a LOT of insight into why the prison system and criminal justice system in the US is extremely flawed.
However, I would like to point out that the population in 1850 was just over 17 million (incl. slaves), just over 5.2% of today's total population, meaning that although there are a ridiculous number of blacks imprisoned, the statistic is barely comparable to slavery because of the massive population boom. U.S. population grew nearly 20x in the time period between 1850 and 2018 -- we would need to compare percentages in order for this to be effective.
In addition, the NAACP reported that 2.3 million African-Americans were imprisoned in 2014, though the 1850 census stated that over 3 million were enslaved.
It is important to be objective in our measurements and not report exaggerated facts, especially if we are to present this issue in a light that is both pertinent and realistic. Many thanks.

Parole and Probabtion operate as "open air" prisons, and folks usually on it, cant vote, jury duty, etc.

PHENOMENAL SPEECH. Well articulated & proved all of her points completely. I was already aware of these issues before the video & am so pleased to see such a well put together descriptive speech of just how bad & deeply seeded these problems truly are in America. If you still haven't figured out there is a problem here then you have a special type of chosen blindness & I'm not sure that's curable. Im a white girl & ive seen this happening to minorities for a decade now but its been happening basically from the beginning of Americas history. America was built off the backs of minorities yet at the same time has DESPISED them as if they were ruining the country. We have dared tell them to "go back to Africa then" despite them being born on American soil who's ancestors invented most of what the history books have credited to some white guy. We say that despite the fact that most of our own ancestors rode into America off the Mayflower yet its never thrown back in our own faces. Its insane the level of hypocrisy thats become normalized & no one thinks a damn thing of it. I truly hope to see the day things truly change in America & I'll be dammed if i ever become part of that problem. United we stand & we already have all the ambition, strength & manpower we need to make change happen. We just have to stop throwing rocks at each other & face those who are feeding off the division.

She makes very valid points. This is the problem when you have "prisons for profit". What we need is institutions that promote real reformation, not just bullshit rhetoric about reformation. If we seek to reform society while they are incarcerated for crimes, and truly give people a "second chance" instead of anticipating their return to the institution, then and ONLY THEN maybe will we make some real progress in this country.
