  • Rams take advantage of Packers mistakes in a hard hitting game. Fred Dryer is inserted into the game for the Rams and receives a standing ovation from the fans. He became a color analyst for CBS Sports later that season.

R.I.P. Coach John Madden. Vin Scully still going strong at the age of 94.
    Go Rams!

Scully and Madden just doesn’t ring like Summerall and Madden.
And yes, I know the history. CBS was trying to see who had the most chemistry with Madden. As great as Scully was, it was definitely Summerall.

Madden had better chemistry with Summerall.

I always grew up watching Vin Scully do baseball but I swear I think he's just as good if not better at football!

For the 2nd year in a row the Rams started 0-2 and get their 1st win 2 years in a row against, you guessed, the Packers. Last year Rams won 51-21. This 81 season the Rams will stumble later and finish 6-10 missing the playoffs for the 1st time since 1972. Fred Dryer was released by the Rams later as it was a turmoil filled season. it seemed everyone played QB for the Rams and yes Dan Pastorini is signed later in the season but it isn't enough to save the Rams.

I remembered that this was the game that the Rams got there 1st win in '81 season (Rams 1-2 after this game). I believed it was the an embarrassment for the Rams to have lost to New Orleans Saints the previous game before this game. Saints were 1-15 in the previous season ('80 season).

Did CBS have Madden audition in the off season with Vin and Pat? They should've done practice games in a studio rather than wait until halfway through the regular season to judge.

according to some article I read, Scully, who was the favorite of the President of CBS, was going to do baseball on CBS the last half the season anyway, so it was the perfect opportunity to try out Summerall, who was the favorite of the newly hired executive producer (and pretty much everyone else at the network after the try-out period). Scully left CBS after the decision in large part because when the young, fresh producer called Scully to tell him whom was chosen, he led off the conversation with "good news!" After explaining to Vin that he'd be able to call two playoff games but not the Super Bowl, Vin said that he didn't see what was so good about that news. Scully's last game involved a famous Dwight Clark catch.
