- Tate and Scase are summoned to see Area Commander Bulstrode after the incident involving the trapped workmen.
From Episode 5, Series 2 (1989)
London's Burning is copyright Network DVD and London Weekend Television
Sadly in 2022 people like Scase are still going in all walks of life, but fortunately people still have the lion's attitude like Sidney Tate
This really is incredibly good character acting by the guy who played Bulstrode. He had a relatively minor part but the fact he's so watchable is testament to his quality. Love the chemistry in this scene.
Gareth Thomas was his name - he had a natural charisma to him as well as a long history of playing authority figures on television, or at least people who looked like they were in charge and you felt you could trust them (Blake's 7, Knights of God, Stocker's Copper, Morgan's Boy, etc.) - and one of the last true TV badasses.
I worked for a fire service (as an admin manager, not a firefighter). I can tell you the atmosphere and interplay between uniformed officers is so authentic.
the Bulstrode bollockings were legendary
Bulstrode definitely liked Tate you can just tell by the way he spoke to him
They're old friends
@Phill B Friendship can only go so far in business.
Tate was my favourite Gov
Sidney gets a very affectionate telling off from Bulstrode. Mere lip service really because Bulstrode knew he'd taken the right action. A total contrast to what Bulstrode said about him in the pub in front of everyone when Sidney was medically retired. "Sheer bloody professionalism"
“AND NOW THIS.” The most raised voice moment with Tate still with Bulstrode
Bulstrode: *DON'T INTERRUPT!*
At the very first time I heard him that loud, I thought it was a wise decision to watch the full scene only once and never again.
Watch this scene at your own risk!
@Stefano Pavone Horrible. But is it true what you said?
@SPeacockWhat was your dad's rank?
@SPeacock Oh. I thought he was a senior fire officer fir a UK Fire Brigade, like Willaim here.
@SPeacock Since RUclips deleted my comment for some reason, I'll ask again. What would your dad think of Tate and Scase?
@SPeacock I'm starting to think that maybe he could've been the fire chief of whatever city or town you've lived in, lol.
I remember the story line. Bulstrode's successor put Scase in charge of the fire HQ car park. I wonder how the likes of Scase got into the fire service when he obviously had such a dislike for people.
Scase (I don’t think)dislike d firefighters(As he was an ordinary fireman once & went through the same pains & strains(In basic-training:-)as the other fire-fighters.
Scase was a man on a power-trip and he was obsessed with power and control, over others and hated Blackwall as they didn’t respect his authoritarian-nature.
In comparison with Tate,it went both ways with Nick & Sydney.
@1:52 when Scase stops talking and looks up and stares at the ceiling, pure comedy from a rules obsessed jobsworth.
Lol... the actor playing Scase did a great job. Sad thing is, my old boss is just like him and is the spitting image too! I laughed my bollocks off!
"Give it time, iron itself out, AND NOW THIS"
Sad thing is there's plenty of scases in the service either ones who are the book as in the book of bollocks or the ones who wrote the book dangerous incompetent individuals
Does anyone else think Bulstrode had already made up his mind that Scase was wrong; and just gave Tate his telling-off for the look of the thing?
No...
Oh 100% I think Bulstrode hated having to do it to Tate. I'm not sure if this is what would've happened in real life, because protection of life is the first priority, and that's all Tate did. Senior officer or not surely? But I remember how this episode ended, Scase was transferred to the North East lol...
@Stefano Pavone Same here, but outright aggression was probably the only method he was used to using. As someone else has commented on here, that was the style of management figures in many professions once upon a time.
@@beasleycourt8873 Yes, but the fire service (London, Toronto, New York or anywhere) is an organization that requires discipline and respect for the chain of command. Right or wrong, junior members just can't override their superiors at a scene. That's why Bulstrode was really upset. He *knew* that Tate was correct about his assessment of the rescue, but he was wrong to override Scase. He told Scase flat out that he screwed up by not having the confidence of his subordinates.
@@TorontoJediMaster So basically Tate broke the chain of command at the scene?
i retired as a StnO, i was described as a dinosaur by some of watch and in oprtional reviews , biggest compliment ever,
He might have hated to admit it but deep down, Bulstrode knew Tate made the right decision.
He didn't hate to admit it - it was more that he believed it sincerely but, for the sake of professionalism, he wasn't able to say so outrightly. Not without giving Tate a dressing-down first, anyway.
During my 31years in the service. The watch have been spoken like that many times but the area commander was a good bloke
I met the Scases of this world in the Army. The same do everything by the book and disregard any kind of expert advice. Usually with disastrous results.
my dad was in the south wales service, and he finished as station commander when he retired in 2009
@@vikingsmb I was area commander whennu retired. Did your dad keep any of his uniform??? I've still got all that uniform from London's burning the helmet and visor and fire gear lol lol lol
@@damonk3674 only the helmet, but got loads of medals and a commendation as well. though
If any one is wondering the out come that rotten egg scase was transferred sideways.
Scase is wind and piss
@@EltonlalehamYes
Fire and rescue service not a bloody computer dating agency lol
"Dating" is not what he said
@@florjanbrudar692 What did he say then? I heard it as "dating" too. I find the line quite clever and ahead of its time, I don't think computer dating agencies were even a thing around then. There was no Plentyoffish, no Tinder, no Eharmony.
@@grahamspragg7494 Okay no need for such a long comment
@@florjanbrudar692 you could just answer the question. I wrote longer comments in response to two others last night.
@@grahamspragg7494 Well look I already said he didn't say "dating", so I don't see any other way to answer.
Men drowning vs rank insubordination? ......... let's put it to the vote shall we!
Bulstrode is palyed by Gareth Thomas Blake from Blake,s Seven and now Gareth is dead and gone I met Gareth Thomas 7 times at various sci-fi cons and he was awesome in billions of ways he was great mates with Tom Baker who was the 4th Dr Who actor
I remember watching this I almost jumped out of my skin when Bulstrode slammed his hand down on the desk
I remember a real life CFO who could have the same effect!!
Their is plenty of people like Scase working at Tesco's
I hate Scase. He's the one who is inept. Not Tate. With Tate he is assertive and fair.
I'd love to work for Sidney Tate, I've just spent 20 years working for absolute twats.
Feels really raw
Bulstrode, Gareth Thomas. He was in police procedurals Parkin's Patch and Sutherland's Law. Bulstrode's temper is 100% Iain Cuthbertson, who played the Procurator Fiscal.
In tests 8 out of 10 owners who expressed a preference said their cats preferred it..... "Whiskas full of meaty goodness".... " MEOW".....
I hate Scase he is inept and should have been transferred long before. On the other hand Station Officer Tate was the best Guv London's Burning had Yeah ok Zorba was ok but Tate was the best out of them all he was THE GUV...
Zorba was great too.
Jax James he was the best in my opinion
Tate lasted 3 seasons. Zorba lasted 8 seasons, nearly 3 times as many. I don't know for a fact what the reason is that Tate failed his medical, but I know I've seen him behave in the same manner as Bulstrode above, possibly worse, and I put it down to that playing a large part, if not solely the reason, for failing the medical. I've posted to one other user a few comments below, to regularly shout increases blood pressure which is not healthy. If Tate wasn't a dinosaur (in the literal sense), I'd like to think he'd have lasted a few more seasons. It's hard; I like Tate too, and I like Bulstrode. But it was brilliant when ACO Baxter reprimanded Scase. When he said Bulstrode was compassionate with firefighters, I got it, but I just don't remember seeing it that much; then again, it's not like he appeared regularly. It's almost like he put Scase below Tate and Bulstrode's league, but sometimes I think Scase was in the same league as them, and that Scase lasted longest out of pride. Don't ever be a dinosaur, it's not worth it and the pride won't do you any good.
@@grahamspragg7494 Tate failed his medical because he was obese and in poor physical condition, not because he shouted too much. He looks like he’d struggle to run the length of himself.
@@nkt1 He might not have been the fittest of Station Officers, but he definitely was not obese. If you want to see an obese person in London's Burning, S3E6 shows an excellent example.
I wonder where Bulstrode parked the liberator?
rrrrank insubordination!
"Shudd up"
Scase looks like an extra from "Despicable Me" .
Tate not always by the book but had the guys loyalty and trust. Aanyone know whats so bad about the north east area lol...
Bill Bulstrode clearly did not like Scase IMO Scase was well up himself and thought he was mr perfect
George Jackson from Brookside.
Who was also a fireman.
scase was a complete knob head
Great acting by the bloke who played him, to make him so loathsome.
I know he's perthetic he doesn't even like getting he's suit dirty
scase is do mean he should have got the sack
Blake!
Watching this compared to the shit show of a last series really shows how much it went downhill. It’s laughable 😬
Very well said . Ged.
Turned into hollyoakes
After series 3 it started and went downhill rapidly
Scace is just a nothing. All he cares about his notepad and his pen. He is a disgrace to the service.
I agree.
I agree 💯 He's too coward to get he's suit dirty
He was shite in Brookside as well….helping the robbers with inside knowledge
he was a fireman there too... Wasn't it Tommy mcardle who framed him
@@paulwhite1040 Brookside….got stitched up a treat after a big fire
