Hey Kenneth, thank you so much for citing me in the video! I really enjoyed your mastering and I'm looking forward to working with you in the mastering on my album. Dope sounds you made here with the Toscam buddy! And it was a plus that you used Astrobrite's Overdriver, I love this track
"Alison's Halo" and early 90s shoegaze bands vibes. This Tascam buddy can also be handy for writing complex stuff in the style of early "Not Drowning, Waving" band, so you can produce 80's trippy dream-pop as well.
Hey everybody, I wish I knew this years ago! A huge thanks goes to Scott Cortez of the bands Astrobrite & Lovesliescrushing, who told me the secret to his beautiful noise guitar sound. To honor his work I'm playing the song "Overdriver" of the "Crush" album by Astrobrite. In this video I demonstrate my 6 favorite distortion pedals recorded on cassette tape. The sound you hearing is pure and not edited afterwards. Have fun and make some noise! And remember, if you want me to cassette master your music, you can always contact me here: bit.ly/3jqVs5s
I like how you did this. I still wish someone would do like 4 track comparison demo between different models to hear how they affect the sound. I don't think I've ever seen one but it would be interesting to see.
I actually thought about something like that. But since the sound is also caused by the cassette type you are using it could be a massive rabbit hole to go there. Every four track works for that sound - as long as the reel keeps spinning. :)
@@berlinshoegazer Yeah I assume that's one reason why I haven't seen one. Also alot of those 4 tracks are so old their sound has probably changed a bunch overtime.
Hey Scarlett and Darren, I also wish this would be possible but it only works after the tape is being played back after recording. There is a really good tape reel effect on the HX Stomp by Line6 that simulates this sound. I still try to find an authentic solution for live but that HX Stomp effect is pretty close.
@@berlinshoegazer Thanks a lot, I’ll check it out! Apparently this is also achievable by using a cassette deck with three heads and a monitor button, although there will be a minor delay.
@@MassacreVegan Brad Laner of Medicine used a 4 track sometimes as a distortion pedal by running his guitar into it and turning up the gain. insane distortion sound.
Hey, question- does this effect still happen without actually recording to tape? As in if i were to just straight up record the output of the maxed out tape deck instead of recording it onto a cassette? Thanks in advance.
Unfortunately not. I found an effect on the HX Stomp by Line 6 called Retro Reel that simulates this aesthetic quite well. That's my only option so far without using a laptop and plugins (wich do not come very close).
I’m considering the Digitech DF7! Can’t decide between it and the Death By Audio Fuzz War (which I’ve had before). What would you go with between the 2? DF7 looks versatile.
Hey so this might be kinda late but how the heck do you setup your tascam into the daw? im so new to this! thanks :) (just curious on how you hooked up everything, as im trying to record the sounds from the tape machine into my daw, you have peaked my interest!)
Maybe your intonation setting is a little off or the pickups are too low in their volume? I can't really say anything without seeing and listening to it. But you can send me a video on instagram in a personal message if you like.
And could i get the same tape effect if i only turned down my tone knob to nearly non-existing point then cranked my bass and hold the mids and highs at the 12 o'clock?
Unfortunately not. Therefore we still have to use digital replicas of this effect. I got a tape saturator and wobble effect on my HX Stomp. It is pretty close to that sound actually.
It kinda sounds to me like Scott Cortez uses a bass with a tremolo bar on the song “Overdriver.” Does anyone know if that’s true or not? I might be crazy, but that’s what it sounded like to me.
@@berlinshoegazer Ohhhhhh that makes a lot of sense, I can see that being the case. Whenever I listened to that song, I always heard a bit of wonkiness to some of the bass, like he’s bending a tremolo arm right as he strikes some of the notes. That actually clears up a lot of my confusion, thanks!
@@wavertone Wait a minute, I recognize that name, “Wavertone.” Scott? Is that you?? How am I only just seeing your reply now? Anyways, that’s really interesting, I’ve always wondered how that “bass” wonkiness was achieved. It makes a lot more sense that it’s actually a guitar and not a bass with a tremolo arm. I absolutely love that song and that album, and that question has always been on my mind ever since I first heard the record. To hear it answered from the man himself is something I never would’ve expected, haha!

Alison’s Halo is way more shimmery and not nearly as distorted.

thanks Kenny.
Always! 🙏
great vid :) copped a fostex x12 a few weeks back for this exact purpose, gives it so much character
also holy shit the dream mangler section is gorgeous
Very cool sounds!

Thank you, Juancito. Hope you're doing well.☀️
I do love astrobrite especially overdriver. I would love get my music mixed and master by you on a later date.

What are the chords for overdriver un guitar? Is it in standard tuning?
Drop D. And then just playing some sus chords like we all did during the early 2000s. :) It was about time to reveal that sound.
I’m wondering if I could use a tape recorder like a pedal
Is it possible to route this deck into an amp and play through it live?
I have the same question

How can I get the same tone if i tried to play Loveliescrushing, would it be in the same vein?
I suppose it would be quite the same but with more (longer) reverb / delay.
@@berlinshoegazer Can i get the longer reverb effect with the compressor/sustainer pedal?
Adding these to my reverb pedal
And could i get the same tape effect if i only turned down my tone knob to nearly non-existing point then cranked my bass and hold the mids and highs at the 12 o'clock?
Do you hear the tape saturation with headphones live, while playing? I guess no but I'm not sure about it.

Yes. I just re-recorded the cassette output into my interface.

there is no bass on 'overdriver' from crush; just manipulated guitar
There is this Bass IV by fender. A guitar bass hybrid with a tremolo. I know he used it at some point.

For this video is the reverb before or after the fuzz pedal?
No. It's after the fuzz and overdrive this time. But in front if the tape distortion for sure. As the cassette distorts everything that goes in.

The video stabilizer is subtly warping the cassette player and pedals which is mildly distracting

Huh?
@@berlinshoegazer I think he's talking about how the sound is synced with the video because of the tape.
