  • This is a tutorial/intro on WSJT-X & the mode FT8.
    FT8 is a fantastic newer digital mode that can be used with low power and in poor conditions. An excellent way to collect DXCC entities with less than optimal antenna system.

    Each video that I've seen on these has given me additional insights into how this works (thanks for mentioning ALC by the way... and how the messages sequence automatically). I managed to make a few FT8 contacts last night... took me a minute to figure out why nobody was answering until I figured out that I had the computer sound-card output going through the laptop speakers instead of the USB... but I noticed the transmitter wasn't putting out any power. I *had* already dealt with the network time issue, so I was pretty sure I was OK there. I think it may be important to remember if you are using a USB radio that if you take the computer away from the radio and put it back, make sure that the settings are still linked to USB devices and haven't "reverted".
    Also thanks for mentioning how you view the mileage to the remote station... I had been looking for it in the confirmation box (where it isn't - but that might be a good enhancement to the software).
    Good job! 73, KM6KV

    Excellent Video, I am just seeing what this FT8 is all about, I am a ssb phone operator and do like to hear a voice coming back to my call...But would like to trying anything radio no matter what it is....But and there is a but it is getting to be that ssb phone is dead and FT8 is booming, Is it because we don't want to talk anymore???.....Or is it just because it is simple to use and easy to rake up DXCC quickly.......But I am going to give it a try, If I get it working and as I said excellent video Thanks.

    • @AE4VJ
      @AE4VJ  5 лет назад

      +dentron160 I believe it’s mostly because of the low sunspot number as we are approaching the bottom of the cycle. FT8 is a lot more robust than sideband or even CW and being able to make contacts under poor conditions is, in part, what is driving the FT8 boom. With FT4 coming to a full release soon, the digital modes will be that much stronger. With electronic logging and LoTW, the instant gratification of a confirmed QSO makes it that much more attractive!
      Thank you for you very kind words! They are much appreciated! Once you get wsjt-x going, check out the JTALERT video.
