  • Kaushiki Chakraborty is one of the finest classical singers in India. In this video, I am reacting to her live performance on Raga Bhimpalasi. Her control over her voice and breath is truly remarkable.

#Rebecca, it sounds like vibrato, but actually if you listen carefully, she was quickly making combinations and permutations of notes by rolling over sub-notes. When the notes are pronounced as "a" we call it atat and such quick permutation-combinations is called "taan". When the notes are pronounced as Sa, re, ga, ma, pa, dha, ni (do re mi fa so la ti) in a taan, it is called bol-taan. Also a higher level of such bol-taan is when you sing the actual words of the song through taan. In Indian Classical, we identify that words have a limit and to express the full emotion one needs to go beyond words into the realm of pure music. Raag means color. It is a framework of musical melody. The basic framework of this raag/ raga (ie, Bhimpalasi) is based on "thaat" Kafi. That is in ascending or Aarohana: Ṉ̣ S G̱ M P Ṉ Ṡ; In descending or Avaroha: Ṡ Ṉ D P M G̱ R S. The raag has komal (soft) Ni and Ga. It is an Odhav-Sampoorna raga, implying that it has 5 notes in Arohana and 7 in Avarohana. You may understand better by following the English sub-titles in this teaching video : ruclips.net/video/b2ltg-eKrKo/видео.html . Also note, Kaushiki is a rising star and not a doyen. If you want to get real shockers, check these out (some might be a bit old videos) :
    1. ruclips.net/video/eEgEqWDyJxA/видео.html (after this performance very few dare to sing the same song)
    2. ruclips.net/video/uawj6tfo3EI/видео.html (this is lighter than a Kheyal and is called Thumri; it has more words. This was sung by another doyen and has become iconic).
    3. ruclips.net/video/yXfwR273gqE/видео.html (again Raag Bhimpalasi, but with a slow melodious start picking up the tempo at the end)
    4. ruclips.net/video/F-pH-fTwXiU/видео.html (the same song sung by Kaushiki in Raga Bhimpalasi, but now by a doyen)
    5. ruclips.net/video/oxm-ddXkBvw/видео.html (again Raag Bhimpalasi, by another doyen, who was the king of melodies, but died young)
    6. ruclips.net/video/yjYP212iZ6Y/видео.html (again Raag Bhimpalasi, by another doyen, called singer of the singers; had a huge range, but his voice never became shrill; so it is easy to miss how many harmonics he is covering)
    7. ruclips.net/video/85pfDRuOd1Q/видео.html (Raag, may not just be representing color of the time of the day, but also season; here the singer of the singers has presented a raag of rains/monsoon)
    8. ruclips.net/video/WmVgN2p2LPc/видео.html (this is my favorite; it is just not a night raag; if one goes deep into it, one might just get immersed and lost).
And if you are interested in dancing then this might be for you : ruclips.net/video/uaUOPEYvQCc/видео.html
And it was not sitar but Tanpura. This is sitar : ruclips.net/video/p-ijCe1xRWQ/видео.html
while this is veena (this is Rudra veena, the other form is Saraswati Veena) : ruclips.net/video/EjiLUruF8XU/видео.html and this is Sarod : ruclips.net/video/yfMHiTIm-zc/видео.html. Final shocker for you : this is a famous duet that can blow your mind : ruclips.net/video/mmiThgzYX5E/видео.html

You are a lot more educated and informed about classical music than I am. I doubt anyone comes close to Bhimsen Joshi, and personally, Pandit Jasraj and Ustad Rashid Khan are also in the class of their own. And yes, Ustad Bade Gulam, Amir Khan, and many others were the best in their times, and you can call them doyens. And yet, I would like to give Kaushiki the credit she deserves - esp in terms of the music that is both excellent and of superb quality. She also has the benefit of improved technology. And her sadhana from the age 4 (to now over 40) shows. It is nothing wrong if many would say prefer to like this version of this song than as #4. BTW-- thank you for a great list - got to hear some of these items after many years.

    • @Anandam1971
      @Anandam1971 3 года назад

@@AmitSheth Kaushiki's father and Ustad Naseem Khan were pupils of the same guru. Unfortunately, Naseem Khan never got the due credit. Often, marketing strategy is also involved. Similarly, Naseem's son,. Wasim Ahmed Khan is a great singer, but most people don't even know him. I guess this is because they are very rigid in their approach and are only appreciated by people who have reached a higher level of understanding of classical music (BTW, Waseem belongs to the family of Sharafat Hussain Khan, Latafat Hussain Khan, Basir Khan, Ata Hussain Khan and Faiyaz Khan). Once someone from AIR asked Nasim Khan from when he was learning music. He answered "Jab tak paida huya" (Since when I was born). Check this out : ruclips.net/video/__Y3HT7USYM/видео.html

In case no one actually translated this yet, the lyrics for the song are as for the song are as follows:-
"Go, go to your temple, I've already heard from my mother in law. I've heard that Sadarang likes you. Did you even think about me?"
It's a rough translation but that's approximately what the song says.

Hi Rebecca...!!! I apologize in advance as this might be a bit long...
First off...... "RAAG" means (layman terms) a set of notes that can be used to express stuff musically. only a certain prescribed notes can be used in a certain raag. Different raags generate differnt feels due to different set of notes being used.
Secondly, what you heard and thought of as a VIBRATO is actually what we call in Indian Classical music as Sargam/ Taan(permutations and combinations of notes used in the raag sung in a fast tempo). Vibrato is, as you correctly said, an oscillation of/around a single note.
Lastly..... What you heard is music that has been passed down from atleast 6 generations..... It's origins go well beyond that.... It's however true that there aren't many who can sing like her.... Let me assure you, there are plenty.
Love your reactions..!!! Keep up the good work...!!!

Darbar Music Festival take place in London only(I beleive you are also from the same place). You can visit there and listen to Indian Classical live. And one more clarification, there are many forms of Indian Classical music. Try listen to Indian Carnatic Music. One suggestion: Nagumonu Ganaleni by Trichur Brothers ruclips.net/video/p2ZhVi8cXqE/видео.html. A must listen piece of the most beloved piece of classical music by one of the most beloved composer Saint Tyagaraja(composed sometime in the 16th century).
Culturally Carnatic is the oldest discipline of music in the world. Mrs. Kaushiki is a proponent of Hindustani Music. Yup...too much to learn in music itself. Hindustani Music traveled the whole world by the Great Maestro Lt. Pandit Ravishankar and his troupe. Unlike Carnatic Music, as in the olden days Brahmin musicians who didn't considered it auspicious to cross the sea. Anyway both has its own effect.

"we don't have a classical singing style"
Royal Opera House artists: "Are we a joke to you?"
"We don't have this kind of music in the UK"
Video description: "Performed in London's Queen Elizabeth Hall"
Kidding! Love the reaction, but what you would hear in Opera houses is what you would call "Western Classical singing". Cheers!
