- This is how I adjusted the gear shifter and linkage on my 1.9 Waterboxer 4 speed VW T25 / Vanagon when struggling to select gears. (I've been advised Air Cooled/Deisel versions should use a 19mm block... tbc) Whether this will work for your or not wil depend on the reason why your having gear selection problems, however if the selector bushes are in good condition should help. Enjoy :)
This is the channel / video I spotted the wooden chock tip, a fantastic video for rebuilding your shifter and bushes. Not specific car channel but fantastically done all the same, thankyou.

Many Uber Thanks 😊
Going to try this on my van. 1st 3rd 4th and Reverse is fine sometimes its hard to get into 2nd. Ive new bushes and linkages to go into it aswell. Thanks for the video
Sorry for the late reply, this didn't ping up for some reason. Its a really easy process only hindered by the camera! 😅 Just note depending what engine/box setup you have will vary the thickness of wood needed. 1.9 (and ASSUME 2.1) as per the vid 23mm. The 1600 CT I'm told needs 19mm. I believe the deisel maybe different again but haven't found that info yet. Best of luck 😊👍
Going to try because my first gear is a problem thank you!!
Best of luck, thanks for watching 😊👍
Awesome, wish I'd known about this before when trying to sort vwcoco's t25 dokka
Yeah me too for my last one lol 😆
Well done. Thanks for sharing.
My pleasure tx for watching 😊👍
Really useful!! Great video
Thanks dude. TBH I was surprised how well it worked, just wish I'd known for my previous vans! Thanks for watching. 😊👍
Great piece of info
Worked a treat 😊👍
Hi I have gear problem and I have to go to put mine in reverse slightly to get 1st
The problem I seem to have is mine splined bar doesn’t seem to twist independently, although everything seems lined up. Is there a knack ? And did you untighten underneath first before you then found neutral at the front and rear
I don't think the order is important. You just need to get the shifter in the correct position with your block, the arm at the rear in the correct upright position and any tension out of the section between the 2, if that makes sense. If your centre section is stuck, may need to free that so turns first. Remember the width of the block is dependant on what gearbox/engine setup you have. Check the video description for options other then the 1.9 dg dj. Best of luck 😊👍
Re your video , would the linkage affect my reversing lights? Apparently in first gear it comes on ?? Any ideas?
Not 100% sure on that one. If your linkage is working as intended without trouble, I can't imagine it's that far out to activate the reverse switch. I'll be honest I'm not sure where that's located exactly as never had to look at one tho believe is at the gearbox end. I'll be under the van tomorrow so have a quick look how it's activated if possible or if can be adjusted itself, so may have a better idea. 😊👍
So was the first thing you loosened underneath the linkage u bolt? Then you put the wood in place, then checked for the rear to be straight up and in neautral and then the gearstick plate??
@@r-joule yeah pretty much. My plate was messed with so had to relocate it to the factory position. Your is probably there already and quick to check with the 2 holes. Set stick into neutral. Loosen the linkage u bolt make sure the front and back section moves free and independently. Chock the box. Make sure rear section is in the correct up down central neutral position. Reconnect linkage u bolt. Remove Chock. Jobs a good-en. Beat of luck.😊👍
Great RHD like SA buses 100
Tx dude 😊👍
WOW
Lol Tx. Just note the different measurements for different vehicles in the title/description. Good Luck 😊👍
Will it work on a 5 speed?
Honestly I'm not sure. Dont think we have any if those here in the uk? Never seen one anyway. I've been informed early aircooled should be 21 mm but I haven't tried that yet, but suspect the 5 speed would be different too. Best of luck 😊👍
Did you end up trying this mate? I’ve got a petrol 5-speed here in Australia and praying the 23mm tip works! 🤙🏼
@@fraser_jones yeah I love to know too. Will update the description if so. Thanks 😊👍
I did my syncro today and it worked
Brilliant stuff. Thanks for the feedback 😊👍
