This is my very first time seeing a Red Velvet song and dance performance and it was definitely a surprise! Let me know more about the group and the girls and it you want to see more Red Velvet like the video :)
I've only seen Blackpink so far from the Kpop girl groups, so let me know who else I should check out

I'm a Blink, but there is no denying Red Velvet's vocals. Psycho is an amazing song and video. Easily one of my favorite songs by any group. In my opinion, Red Velvet and Mamamoo have the best combination of strong vocalists and intricate vocal arrangements.

Irene is hands down the most gorgeous woman I have ever seen. Its not just her face, her elegance abd the way she keeps herself guarded most of the time make her more attractive. psycho has a meaning，not just normal love. It‘s about schizobulia，where all the five characters live in the same body，and irene is the original one who might be harmed by the others.
Red Velvet has the best voices in K-pop, they are like the "ad-lib queens" because they even carry the ad-libs from the original track and harmonize during the performance while dancing!
Wendy, the white-haired girl is the main vocalist/singer of the group, she hits crazy notes, she is a vocal powerhouse.
Seulgi is their main dancer, the one that has beautiful fierce cat eyes. "The girl in the middle."
Irene, yes, you somewhat know it, she is the main visual of the group as she said it during her rap part.

Just to let you know that this was choreographed by a 15 years old (she's 17 now coz this song came out 2019) named Bailey Sok a professional dancer and choreographer, she's one the best student of Matt Steffanina.

There are two choreographers for Psycho. Bailey Sok and Mina Myoung. Actually they took more choreography from Mina's but of course both choreographers deserve equal recognition :)
Psycho is the BEST our only regret is when promoting this song last year Wendy( the white bleached hair who was hitting the high notes) got injured from falling backstage almost 6 feet after their stage performance at SBS musicshow...The girls promoted the whole 2020 year without her as she was hospitalized and healing. we just got her back this year and she will release her first solo album on April next month!!!!
Believe it or not, Red Velvet have one of the hardest choreographies. Psycho and One Of These Nights might be the easiest choreo but damn all of their other songs' choreographies are hard af especially Rookie
You mentioned they used their hands a lot elegantly as if they were doing ballet. I am not sure if SM informed the choreographers about the concept of Psycho being based from the movie Black Swan (2010) the one lead by Natalie Portman but maybe that's why it looked like that, they probably incorporated a lot of hand movements and tweaked it a bit added more combo to look modern or bit contemporaryish :)

As noted below you were right, the original visual is Irene (real name Bae Ju Hyun). She is one of the most beautiful women in the world and in Feb of 2019 was chosen as the first Asian model for Damiani (past ones are Sohia Loren and Gwyneth Paltrow). Also as noted below the vocals from Wendy, Seulgi and Joy are world class, and Yeri (the maknae) is great too! Looking forward to your reviews of Monster and Naughty (as you can prob tell Im a big fan of theirs)
one of the things that distinguishes Kpop from western pop is the fact that almost every (pop) song has choreo - i think that's partly because there has always been live performance shows. this has resulted in a culture where everybody remembers specific dances and moves associated with iconic songs and many people learn these moves. i think that is a major factor in the hand movements. this isn't a contemporary or ballet performance performed by classically trained dancers, it's pop idols giving you something to do along with them as you listen to their music (just an idea) also because idols are singing while performing, hand movements provide visual action without being so demanding on stamina and breathing.

there isn't a dance practice cause Wendy (the blonde one) suffered an injury due to the negligence of a TV Company, 2 days after they released this song, so that's why you will see some shots are the asme as the MV. Also the shots are not the best quality when we referred to dance shots.
About the girl in the Middle, that's Seulgi ! Main Dancer of RV ! she has this Girl crush vibe but she's cute hahaha there's a reason people say Seulgi and Ddeulgi xD
About the original visual, yeah Irene is considered like the visual of 3rd generation !
It's a shame SM didnt release a lot of their dance practice but still there's are some interesting there ! hope u watch it and you as a dancer, have to say that is a must to react to "naughty" haha Spoiler, they practiced for like 5 months to learn the basic of (...) and the choreo !

I think I understood what you meant when you spoke of the way they are using their hands in the choreography, in a way it is as if the hand movements fit perfectly with the beat of the song. SM Ent. is known for doing this with her choreography. the dance is not to be explosive, it is there to harmonize with the music as if the dance were part of one of the singing voices. you can see a lot of this in the Red Velvet dances and also in other groups like EXO

I'm glad you picked up on the funny/campy side to this song. Its a very prominent vibe from red velvet and I love them for it. They aren't afraid to be a bit silly or cheesy with their songs and even their mvs. Almost all of their mvs before psycho era are extra campy/fun and its so refreshing. yes the hand movements become part of their bodies and enhance the visuals - at times like an organism combined with the music into an alternate reality.
As many were recommending Naughty by Red Velvet's subunit Irene & Seulgi. I on the other hand would recommend their title track, Monster, to you because it has lots of interesting imagery and somehow the whole choreography alone tells the story of the song. Almost lyrical which is rare in kpop. Choreographer was Janelle Ginestra :)
P.S. I watched your reaction to Taemin's IDEA and in Monster the dancers are not just "extra" or "back up" to the choreography, but an integral part of the overall dance :)

Psycho is such a great song to begin into the rv world, they got even more intricate choreos in other songs. I'd recommend Irene & Seulgi's Monster the stage presence they got and some movements in it are just chef's kiss. Hope you like the group and react more to Red Velvet in the future 💗
So this is a comment I find explaining accurately what is going on in the MV 😅:
Basically in psycho, people may think that Joy (girl with black bangs) may be the evil one, but it's lrene (the original visual hehe). In the beginning to the bridge, you see that Joy is trying to "wake" the members and acknowledge that Irene is basically a puppet master. Irene starts to lose her control over the members as the members break out of their spell and start rebelling, but the butterfly mirror means that Irene has taken over again and in the ending where they dance with the dresses, they are basically revolving around Irene which means Irene has taken over again and is in control.

I think Dumb Dumb by Red Velvet is one of their dance performance that I really like.
Kpop has a nice balance of everything. I think thats one thing that most people don't know. You can find a ton of variety in Kpop and just like this for instance. You can find red velvet doing more of the cutesy, theatrical, style of dancing with their RED music (if you didn't know they cross back and forth between the more "traditional" Kpop that I think most people associate it with, the RED, and the more heavily influenced in hip hop and Rnb sound like this song which is the VELVET side of them. making Red Velvet. I think thats part of the reason that Kpop is appealing to a bigger audience everyday. Their versatility as artists and performers is impressive. Not just RV but many KPOP groups do this. Im not a professional dancer in anyway but I still consider that kind of choreo dance. Dance doesn't have to be a specific thing or style. Kpop is unique in that they have essentially made their own unique style of dance from other styles and mashing it with theirs. I would suggest trying something from their RED side like Russian Roulette or Ice Cream Cake. RV has always had smart choreo in my opinion. I do agree that SOME Kpop can make it to redundant with certain movements and choreo
Fun fact:
the ending pose with the girls resemble the letters "RV" but since Wendy got an injury thus she being missing from the end pose, the end pose resembles the roman numerals "IV" 4 as in 4 members instead of 5
This song is exactly the reason why I became Reveluv (Red Velvet's fans are called). Wendy the main vocal has a very powerful voice yet subtle. They are a very talented group and all beautiful. Sad that they are not promoted much but in Korea they have a reputation as powerhouse group.
Even if it is just Seulgi and Wendy they can ace other groups in beauty and talent.
To summarise the song,
They're in a very toxic, controlling & abusive relationship both physical and verbal with their partner
On the outside, they look so perfect together, a cute loving couple
Even if they fight (as in literal fight), they'd hugged the next moment like nothing has happened beforehand
People (close to them) called it weird coz they know the situation they're in....this they both know too but truth is, they enjoyed it (there's like some masochistic element there)
They didn't want to let go of each other.... they're obsessed with each other
People call them psycho for it but they don't care
so this song is like them saying/consoling to themselves "yeah I'm a psycho for you, so what? it doesn't matter how anyone sees us, yes we're a little weird but that's alright, we're always okay at the end so it'll be fine"

Yes. If you notice more, kpop girl groups focus more with hands movements. While boy groups more to leg movements. And it is also depends to the company to accept the original dance/choreography (where they will hired a few professional choreographers to create a choreography for the song) or they will change for a bit. Bcs they wanted it to be easy for the idols to do simple movement while singing. And if idols doesn't mind with the dance they will continue with the original dance.
Oh that's interesting, I guess boy groups do tend to have more leg moves and girl groups more hands movement!

Hi , in this video first we are shown as Joy is the one who is psycho as she is planning something for all the girls but in the end , the real psycho is Irene , she was the one controlling everyone as an example of sewing , when Joy started to remove everyone from her control she cut her finger while sewing , but in the end the ready dresses signifies her control has set again and that's why she says Psycho in the end , it's an amazing song

Red Velvet is one of the groups with the best vocals, I love this song.... the reason Psycho still doesn't have dance practice is because unfortunately Wendy (this girl 3:40) had a serious accident 2 days after the song was released and they hadn't recorded it yet (Wendy recovered and is fine now) :)

This is one of the best song from them. The beat is unique it has electronic sound to it which I like the most in this song.

red velvet is known for great vocals and amazing discography. they don't have lots of dance practices bcs their company simply hates them, and that's one of the reasons why they're underestimated for their skills in dancing.
irene and seulgi 'monster' and 'naughty' shook people bcs of their crazy choreo, so pls do check them out! (they have dance practice/performance for this)
live stages wouldn't do justice to their dance skills since they need to be stable while singing, but if you're interested to react to their dancing, it'll be good enough i believe. they have 3 dance practices released, you can check them out too!

You should really check out Naughty by Irene-Seulgi coz its 3-4 mins of pure tutting and whacking and you'll love every bit of it
"a" visual is a beauty. All kpop idols (of whatever gender) are very good looking; in the entertainment biz, especially in SK, it not just a job requirement, it's #1 on the list. "The" visual of a group, in Korean fan-speak, means the member who best conforms to a specific set of beauty ideals. In RV that's a tie between the leader, Irene (off-shoulder white dress) and Joy (tallest, black dress with white yoke). Designating the position officially started in larger groups that ran out of performance-based titles to bestow (see separate post). International fans trying to apply the visual label, even when they say "the", are actually applying the "a" meaning, because we have different beauty standards (unless our pick matches the original Korean).
The hierarchy of positions:
1. Leader (usually but not always eldest member) 2. Main vocalist 3. Lead Vocalist 4. Main Dancer 5. Maknae (youngest) 6. Lead dancer 7. Main rapper 9. sub-vocals & vocal line (large groups only) 10. dance line (large groups only) 11. Lead and sub-rapper(s). Pretty much everyone in a group could be considered a sub-vocal and sub-dancer. Combined roles naturally carry the status of the higher element. A "line" is when three or more of a particular type exist in a group. Only current (4th Gen) groups embrace having a "foreigner's line", previous generations tried to blend in more; Korean-Americans who assimilated well escaped the routine undervaluement of foreigners.
Red Velvet: the best idol group alive.
I kinda feel bad they weren't the first group you reacted to because they set the bar so high. I cannot stan any other kpop group after listening to their discography and getting to know them.
Actually the theory of being in a toxic relationship is just the tip of the ice berg. The MV, according to some dedicated fans and i think its more accurate, is actually about the girls' relationship towards each other. The point here is that is to find the psycho. Joy (the one with the bangs) was the psycho hence you saw her peeking in the MV. She was the root why the group fell apart( the red string was cut and irene got hurt from the sewing machine) . Irene, the original visual girl wasn't talking about visual but it's more like "i am unique and no one can copy me". The part where you see butterflies is where irene who was the leader of the group trying to fix the relationship hence they were singing "hey now we'll be okay". Butterflies represent butterfly effect which is like in one action will have different reaction or something. And in the end they were all laughing and dancing cause they finally figured out their differences and have accepted each other.
I think this is more accurate cause red velvet is known to be a pizzaman killing, man hating, independent woman, weird but catchy group.
