Beavers have done more to shape North American landscapes than any animal beside humans. We don’t notice them much today because there aren’t many left, but before colonization, North America was home to hundreds of millions of these furry engineers. This week, we show you why Earth’s second largest rodent is more amazing than you ever knew, and why they’re the smartest thing in fur pants.

I decided to name the beaver I met "Justin". Now he's Justin Beaver.
Hope you enjoyed learning about the most under-appreciated engineers in nature!
It's Okay To Be Smart I'm trying to think of a beaver pun but I can't come up with a DAM one
It's Okay To Be Smart DAM those beavers are cute
tell about Nepal history
It's Okay To Be Smart im done
Water we doing reading these puns?
Me : My teeth are so strong n healthy.
Beaver : Hold my tree.
puaka that’s funny! Lol
puaka that’s me
The only animal I know of with natural grills.
haha so funny
😂 nice one
"And then humans started killing them all..."
Is it me or is it always the same story ?
humans also try to survive.. their own way
Ringeistvonmordor Ah yes because humanity is on their last legs as they slaughter otters for clothing and other animals for the same purpose.
@@peaceofcake2153 what r u talking about
@@peaceofcake2153 so u telling me that if tigers could eat all the beavers they wouldnt?
Yep, it's exactly the same with the north American bison. They used to be very common until they got hunted almost to extinction.
I always imagine Beavers having an outrageous working class british accent lol.
now i know why most animated movies featured beavers as construction workers LMAO.
Lmao 😂
Kind of sad that you didn't know that before. Never late to learn though
I mean they can also be engineers and architects...
Wait, you legit learned about bever dams now? That's like kindergarden/infant knowledge. How can you not stumble up on that knowledge for what, like 20ish years???
@@anbuhyuga8299 because not all countries have animals like beavers and schools don't always teach us about most animals ????
We've recently introduced a number of beavers into northern Scotland in effort to restore our damaged ecosystem. I met a friend who said he was against the reintroduction of this keystone species. He's from the urban south, and could not justify his opinion other than "well we've seemed to last long enough without them".
My username is so obnoxiously long and there is absolutely nothing you can do about the matter
Did he planning to built dam that filter and gives nutrients the water?
My username is so obnoxiously long and there is absolutely nothing you can do about the matter you have an obnoxiously long user name, but I fear there's nothing I can do about the matter. Good day.
My username is so obnoxiously long and there is absolutely nothing you can do about the matter
Eventually you will have to trap and kill Beavers to control the population and limit the damage. Then you will have to deal with the morons that are against killing anything, and the morons that outlaw the most effective traps. Good luck with your future excess Beaver problem.
@@ChrisGilliamOffGrid I think you would be for this, as without something to trap I'd think you'd be out of a job. I'd rather have wildlife that we occasionally had to trim back than no wildlife at all. Plus you can make good money selling beaver pelts (depending on the price fluctuations) if you ever get a healthy harvest-able population. You can eat them too!
@@irkendragon You haven't seen my channel I guess? I live in Bama. We are swamped with critters, and Beaver is my favorite meat source. 😉
This makes me so sad...some people talking about how beavers are pests, and are destructive to roads, and trees, etc. Beavers are the most wonderful species, on the planet. During the winter, they let all kinds of other creatures live in their warm dams with them, like frogs, muskrats, for example...and they all live in harmony.
When 2 strange beavers meet each other, in a stream or pond, they just swim up to each other, and start grooming each other. Beaver couples never fight. We should all strive to be more like the mighty, amazing, peaceful, beaver. ❤️
They are the perfect Canadian mascot. ☺
Man you surely watch a lot of cartoon to think that animals really care about being kind to each other
When the fur market crashed(thanks PETA), beavers became an overpopulated pest. They are also aggresive and will attack humans to protect their dam property. My wife was attacked my one on her land and had to kill it with the biggest stick handy. How ironic that it was from a tree the beaver cut down.
@@stanleycronk4136 It's humans who are overpopulated and putting a strain on the environment. Beavers are just bouncing back from nearly being hunted into extinction.
@@JoRiver11 Ya, our herd needs thinning for sure. Was sorta hoping this latest flu bug would nave taken a bit more of a dent outta it.
Beavers seeing a body of water: "It's free real estate."
Beavers turn marshes into swamps, then eventually those fill in with sediment and become wetlands. Then eventually the water finds easier paths to flow through. The wetlands eventually become boggy fields. Eventually those dry out and become tillable soil and farmland.
Without beavers, we would be living in marshes.
This is my swamp

Lol i know that joke
KEY MONKEY wtf
KEY MONKEY where did that even come from
Beaver: Yo human can you NOT stand on my DAM. See now the its leaking.
My culture has always called beavers "small people" because they change the landscape to suit their needs, build houses, live together as extended families, and they leave little holes in the tops of their lodges, just like our wig-wams had holes in the top to let smoke out. They also represent wisdom, as a beaver knows he must chew wood everyday or else his teeth will over grow and he'll starve, and he has to build dams to create his pond and lodges to stay safe, raise kits survive the winter months.
He knows what his skills are and he uses his gifts to provide himself and his family with a comfortable and happy life. It was always said that we should be like beavers and use our personal gifts and talents to benefit ourselves and everyone around us, because neglecting your gifts will turn those gifts into a negative force that works against you, and you won't get to live a comfortable and happy life with the ones you love.
Beavers are wise, that's why they always get their lodge repairs done and stock their underwater cache with tons of food before the weather turns cold, because they have to go into the dens early enough to make sure they're under the ice when the pond freezes, and if they don't have food stashed when that happens, they're trapped under the ice, and they could starve.
Often we fail to do things that have terrible consequences for ourselves. Beavers don't. You just don't see beavers freezing or starving to death in the winter. They set a good example for us, especially when we really don't want to put hard work in on a task. If you're wise, you'll do what the beaver does, and persevere through the hard work, so you and your loved ones are provided for. They represent a very valuable life lesson. We have many teachings with animals like that.
Yes, Mom. :-)
My alma mater had a beaver as it's mascot, referring to beavers as "Nature's Engineers".
Wait so we use beaver butt juice to make perfume?...
It is used as natural vanilla flavour too, though the real vanilla is more often now when there is not much beavers
there's also whale sperm in cosmetic products and lubricants... so yeah
+Tell Me This - Not exactly. What's used in cosmetics is ambergris. Ambergris is a solid, waxy, flammable substance of a dull grey or blackish color, produced in the digestive system of sperm whales. Not the same as sperm from whales. A sperm whale is a particular family of whales, male and female, having nothing to do with what you think of as "sperm".
Silkendrum yup just realized i mixed sperm whaling with whale sperm 🙃but yeah i was talking about the Spermaceti that is in the head of the whale. what you are talking about is used in perfumes
WTF?!?!?!
I looked it up and thank god, both species are in Least Concern nowadays
Beavers have moved back into many areas. I even saw beavers building along a freeway drainage ditch in SW Ohio and flooded ranch fields in central Oklahoma.
They are a pest in many places. They pay bounty on them in some provinces in Canada.
Beavers are everywhere in the US... Just had some relocated out of a run off sewer drain near my house cutting down trees building a dam and I live in THE CITY CITY!!
There's iron fences around trees in a park located in downtown Toronto because of beavers. Like all rodents, they reproduce very fast. I'm glad they are out of risk again. Such incredible animals
@@mikeleikam2892 That's awful.
Its amazing nature built something that could chop down a giant tree, theres literally something that does everything on this old rock!
Fun fact: beavers dams are so strong that you literally need modern explosives to get rid of them!
Very curious - can you detect the beaver's scent from a distance? If so, what did it smell like? Also, do you now if there are any other animals that use their tails as a construction tool?
The smell wasn't very strong, actually. Their scent mounds are pretty low to the ground, plus it was raining. I picked up more of a general "damp temperate rainforest floor" and "fresh stick" aroma everywhere
Deep Look i love you !!!!!!!!!!! My favorite channel on RUclips !! Now it's okay to be smart is another one! 😍😍😍😍😍

I always pictured beavers as being about the size of a large cat. It wasn’t until my German Shorthair tried making friends with one in the water that I learned they’re the size of a large dog.
There was a stream behind my parents' cabin in Washington State. In order to make the water slow down, and provide a place to splash for my young children, my dad placed rocks evenly across the stream. The very next day, I noticed small sticks standing upright in the mud, equidistant between the stones. My dad denied responsibility for them, and suggested beavers. Sure enough, with a few days' time, the beavers had built a dam, creating a pond. I could see where the little saplings around had been gnawed off, but never saw the beavers themselves. I always thought they must've been attracted to the change in the sound of the stream: they knew there was an obstruction caused by the rocks, and therefore a good place to build.
My parents' friends were afraid my parents would succumb to "beaver fever," which they said could be caused by drinking water from a beaver pond, due to the excrement in it. (My parents got their drinking supply from a pipe-and-pump system my father had previously dug into the stream.) However, no one ever suffered from the beavers' presence.
beavers gave humans the idea to build dams :D
@The Deathless ofc but they have us a headstart to it.
@NEW Yeah, because humans are somehow so superior to animals in everything and they absolutely did *not* get ideas from animals on survival, building etc., and they most certainly never in their existence relied heavily on animals to assist them with all kinds of work, such as building, carrying, farming etc.. Aren’t humans such an independent species, that doesn’t rely at all on other species’ help and existence. For god’s sake...
@TheGermanDuck Friendly reminder that humans managed to build skyscrapers waaay *after* they built machinery to be able to create buildings. Instead of being snarky, think about human evolution and history, and how up until the last 150-200 years humans have been relying *mostly* on animals (horses, camels, donkeys etc) to carry stuff to long distances on land. Humans wouldn't accomplish lots of things without animals and their contribution. We've used animals to help us with carrying stuff, with agriculture and food production, we even managed to dress ourselves and create clothing by observing animals who didn't die from cold or felt uncomfortable due to having fur, and by getting their skins and wool/hairs from them to protect ourselves from the environment. We even got ideas from other species on how to survive or do certain things such as hunting, building and finding places to stay. Beavers are an example. Yes, even though we are the "smartest" and more "superior" of all the species (the former especially is debatable in some cases) , we're also very, very ungrateful towards animals and their help. You people need to have a wider perspective and understanding of things.
Beavers are OCD to running water hahahaha
hilllllarious
piplupcola
Opposite of plumbers actually.
scientists have played the sounds of running water near beaver dams, only to come back to find the speakers had been covered with sticks, twigs and mud.
🐤🐥🐣🐰🐶🐯🐵
No.
Why do I get the feeling you guys destroyed the beavers' dam just to make one show up to repair it...
We actually joined a wildlife management team doing a controlled water release after a rainstorm (so they did create that small hole earlier in the day). They do that to keep the local area from flooding and to keep locals from getting mad at the beavers and wanting to kill 'em. Everyone wins, beavers get to beaver, humans don't get their houses flooded.
Thanks for the explanation, didn't mean to sound harsh. I think it was Joe saying "sprung a leak" which made me think "yeah, right".
I mean, technically you were right, so good job on the observation. Just turns out it was a helpful compromise rather than a stunt for a video. :)
"destroyed the beavers' dam" is a bit hyperbolic.
Osimmac ikr XD
This is a FANTASTIC summary of the reasons why beavers matter! I will share it everywhere! Thank you!
This is my favorite IOTBS episode ever and I come back to this at least 3-4 times a year 😄😂 or every time I see a clip of a beaver on RUclips
"...you're never going to look at beavers the same way, again."
This should be very entertaining!
It is always fascinate me how ecosystems made, it isssss well balanced, they have their engineer too. Amazing
Though, definitely, Humans are not the ecosystem engineers. We are the consumers, greedy consumers, and butchers.
I love it when this channel talks about animals. Thank you
The original Engineers. thanks so much for creating this video and to raise awareness about beavers in general. A +
Bidoof and Bibarel should have a unique "Iron Fang" move, Steel type, 65 attack, 95 accuracy, 15 pp, 20% chance to flinch.
GuyWithAnAmazingHat that move is not so good maybe 30% flinch change and 100% accuracy or higher base damage
I intentionally put it in the same group of moves as the elemental fangs, which all have 65 attack and 95 accuracy, 10% flinch and 10% status. I just added the two 10% chances for a 20% flinch since Steel doesn't really have a status attached to it.
GuyWithAnAmazingHat fair enough but it would be better of with higher something as bidoof and bibarel are pretty weak.
Nice Hat! I have one just like it
y'know I've always wanted a fairy and grass type beaver Pokemon because of how their dams literally create ecosystems...ive made a fakemon based on that idea but meh, didn't like the design...might try again

There's a beaver that lives in my backyard, I guess that's Canadian suburbia for ya!
fun fact: beavers were declared as fish by the catholic church way back so people could still eat meat during Lent.
Disgusting :( Sorry to anyone who's offended, but I'm not surprised that the Church did that.
Religious people making up rules to suit their lives and desires. What a shock lmao
No, those were capybaras. (Which we saw as the LARGEST rodents, compared to beavers, who are the second-largest rodents.) They called them fish because they had such an aquatic lifestyle.
Or did the church authorities make the same declaration for beavers as well?
Lmao wtf
What does beaver taste like? Is it fishy? Lol
Thank you Dr Joe and team, it is always a joyful experience to watch your video. It is packed with information to educate us.

I've been falling in love with nature more and more by just watching your and deep looks videos
Once i was sleeping on the side of a nearby river in a hammock. After sunset, i started to hear strange noises. Then hard chewing. Then big splashes. I knew they were beavers, but those strange noises always came back. They were like... forced flatulence. And bubbles sometimes. At first i thought it was just how they were pulling the wet wood around. But it became too clear and regular to accidentally create such sounds. Then i imagined, there was a fisherman on the other side, lifting his knees in the air and letting out what his output is capable of. But there is no village or even roads there, it can't be a fisherman. My final realization was that i was listening to long, loud and powerful beaver-farts all night long.
Science, can you confirm it, please?
reminds me of one of the brain and brawn books. a scout team was sent out to newly discovered planets to see if any of them might have highly intelligent life on them. one of their discoveries was a race that communicated entirely by farts. the brawn was sampling local fauna that was marked as edible. he got extremely bad gas. it confused the natives something awful. as they were trying really hard to learn his language so they could talk to him.
ummmm.... what????
Death OfTime what were they called? Sounds interesting. I’ve tried searching Brain and Brawn books but to no avail. Do you remember the author? Thanks.

It is great that you arent just narrating. You know what you are talking and you filmed right next to a beaver. Well done man
Did you know that beavers are the greatest modifiers of their ecosystem, second only too humans
I mean they literally create LAKES
so you wanted to see beavers and you thought alaska. As a Canadian I'm kind of offended.
Grizlerber you do have beaver there! Wish we had the population and bounty system Canada has on beaver. Great national animal by the way!
lol! I had the same reaction.
But, being Canadian, we are sorry for being offended
Beavers are lovely! They have beautiful family lives. Great video!!!
I used to dismantle beaver dams for an explosive company. They needed to have water streams between every storage "bunker" to stop the fire spreading if there ever was one. I can tell you it is very well made and solid! And after breaking a dam, if you do not come back for 2-3 days, it pops back up like it was always there.xD

Looks like humans finally give a _dam_ about beavers...
Heheheh

Thank you beavers for making our landscape great and beautiful.
Amazing video !!!! Thank you so much for your work !!!
What happens if there are too many many beavers in 1 specific area? Will they migrate? Do they fight or compete for territory? Or is it necessary for us to manage the population of beavers?
The three year olds will migrate. Old single males will also migrate and they do fight over territory. Huge bites through tail and hide. Trappers quit trapping beaver when they start breeding due to the bites in the hides. Too many beaver will also clear out all the trees along ,creeks, river ,and ponds ,then migrate.
Beaver so smart ! They robbed My house one time !
Thank you for spreading the knowledge of the importance of these wonderful critters ❤
A world without Beavers~I shudder to think! Here in Michigan, beavers are most essential to our eco-system with so much forestry and our lakes, river and streams wouldn't be as scenic and clean without the busy beavers. Thanks for uploading! :)
So, the introduction of beavers in various parts of Florida, Alabama, and Georgia during recent hurricane could have minimized the extensive water damage to property? Imagine that! 🤔
Alabaman Inbreds will hump the beaver after they bred with their families
I live in Argentina; in the sixties our navy introduced the beavers in Tierra del Fuego. They want to start a fur business. Now, the beavers, without predators, made a mess with the ecosystem, because the trees don´t grow up near the dams they made, erosion, displacement of other species. Here they are a HUGE problem. they extends from all the island and some go to the continent.
Martin Barba They didn’t belong there in the first place what do you expect. Beavers took 100,000 years to adapt to where they live/lived. That’s there natural habitat you can’t put them somewhere where they didn’t adapt for tens of thousands of years.
Martin Barba some what like the introduction of the capybara and the nutria to the southern US. The fur isn't worth much so no one hunts/ traps them except as animal damage control.
start eating them
Lo último que había escuchado al respecto es que Chile y Argentina le declararon la guerra a los castores. Iba a comentar (en un inglés muy malo) lo que escribiste.

You nailed it my friend! Thank you so much for this short but extremely precise video about the creatures and created the land as we know it. I always like to refer to beavers, before climate change, when it comes to floods or droughts. Most people just have no idea, how crucial these little guys were, to the stability and fertility of land. Just like the rotting and decaying of the plants within the beaver ponds, release nutrients to wash down stream to further aid growth and development of healthy soil. I LOVE BEAVERS and like to go kayaking on their ponds, sit still and watch them build.
I'm in love with beavers ❤️❤️❤️

We need beavers in Australia.... that said we also need rain in Australia 🤨
Being a Safety scientist and an Environmental Professional and a Businessman, I can easily sure you that the only way of getting rains is forests. But in order to create forests it would take around 150 years. Therefore you need to adopt a rapid afforestation techniques of Ancient India and Japan.

when it comes to nature God made the Beaver natures custodian and architect. No other creature, not even man understands the earth like a beaver. where the beaver dwells so exists lands rich and plentiful of nature. And at its roots is governing the collection and managing the flow of water, vital to the earth soil stability and growth.
@Advocatus Diaboli Everything evolves over time. But make no mistake.. all science is theory, because we only have the ability to see a very small portion of things. without truly knowing a things creation , from beginning middle and end, how could your ever truly know whats actual fact. We label things fact when it best suit our criteria of understanding, what we can see and expect. but our analysis is only a glimpse in time. without knowing the full story, its impossible to for us to label anything as fact. .. for instance the smallest we can analyse is called strings, but what makes strings, and for what makes strings what made of them..so on and so forth deeper and deeper. not to mention is goes the opposite directions as well. and though we cant comprehend God, it is written that God says he is the beginning and end. of course we ask well were did God come from. and in this loop we find the very limitation of the human mind. we can only think by what we see. but God has gifted us with a way beyond our limitations.. faith. to believe without seeing, to know without knowing. but we are so very small and yet so very arrogant, that we remain searching in whats really a sandbox.
Wait, what?! They eat thier excrement??? Over and over until it looks like saw dust!!! Once is one to many in my opinion...

So beavers eat their own shit. Talk about Thermodynamic efficiency.
Most rodents do actually. Guinea pigs, Rabbits etc. all eat their feces. Though their first "feces" isn't really shit. It's soft and whitish in colour, and has immune cells that stop bacterial infections. That's why they can eat it safely
We eat their shit as well cough ice cream cough.

I always get giddy when someone I watch on RUclips visits my home state. I used to go to a school that had a beaver dam right next to it. They're really cool critters. They sometimes slap their tail on the water when they dive and it sounds like a gunshot!
