    Beavers have done more to shape North American landscapes than any animal beside humans. We don’t notice them much today because there aren’t many left, but before colonization, North America was home to hundreds of millions of these furry engineers. This week, we show you why Earth’s second largest rodent is more amazing than you ever knew, and why they’re the smartest thing in fur pants.

    This makes me so sad...some people talking about how beavers are pests, and are destructive to roads, and trees, etc. Beavers are the most wonderful species, on the planet. During the winter, they let all kinds of other creatures live in their warm dams with them, like frogs, muskrats, for example...and they all live in harmony.
    When 2 strange beavers meet each other, in a stream or pond, they just swim up to each other, and start grooming each other. Beaver couples never fight. We should all strive to be more like the mighty, amazing, peaceful, beaver. ❤️

    Beavers turn marshes into swamps, then eventually those fill in with sediment and become wetlands. Then eventually the water finds easier paths to flow through. The wetlands eventually become boggy fields. Eventually those dry out and become tillable soil and farmland.
    Without beavers, we would be living in marshes.

    My culture has always called beavers "small people" because they change the landscape to suit their needs, build houses, live together as extended families, and they leave little holes in the tops of their lodges, just like our wig-wams had holes in the top to let smoke out. They also represent wisdom, as a beaver knows he must chew wood everyday or else his teeth will over grow and he'll starve, and he has to build dams to create his pond and lodges to stay safe, raise kits survive the winter months.
    He knows what his skills are and he uses his gifts to provide himself and his family with a comfortable and happy life. It was always said that we should be like beavers and use our personal gifts and talents to benefit ourselves and everyone around us, because neglecting your gifts will turn those gifts into a negative force that works against you, and you won't get to live a comfortable and happy life with the ones you love.
    Beavers are wise, that's why they always get their lodge repairs done and stock their underwater cache with tons of food before the weather turns cold, because they have to go into the dens early enough to make sure they're under the ice when the pond freezes, and if they don't have food stashed when that happens, they're trapped under the ice, and they could starve.
    Often we fail to do things that have terrible consequences for ourselves. Beavers don't. You just don't see beavers freezing or starving to death in the winter. They set a good example for us, especially when we really don't want to put hard work in on a task. If you're wise, you'll do what the beaver does, and persevere through the hard work, so you and your loved ones are provided for. They represent a very valuable life lesson. We have many teachings with animals like that.

  • @bonniewood5263
    @bonniewood5263 5 лет назад +8

    There was a stream behind my parents' cabin in Washington State. In order to make the water slow down, and provide a place to splash for my young children, my dad placed rocks evenly across the stream. The very next day, I noticed small sticks standing upright in the mud, equidistant between the stones. My dad denied responsibility for them, and suggested beavers. Sure enough, with a few days' time, the beavers had built a dam, creating a pond. I could see where the little saplings around had been gnawed off, but never saw the beavers themselves. I always thought they must've been attracted to the change in the sound of the stream: they knew there was an obstruction caused by the rocks, and therefore a good place to build.
    My parents' friends were afraid my parents would succumb to "beaver fever," which they said could be caused by drinking water from a beaver pond, due to the excrement in it. (My parents got their drinking supply from a pipe-and-pump system my father had previously dug into the stream.) However, no one ever suffered from the beavers' presence.

      @NEW Yeah, because humans are somehow so superior to animals in everything and they absolutely did *not* get ideas from animals on survival, building etc., and they most certainly never in their existence relied heavily on animals to assist them with all kinds of work, such as building, carrying, farming etc.. Aren’t humans such an independent species, that doesn’t rely at all on other species’ help and existence. For god’s sake...

    • @GeorginaD07
      @GeorginaD07 2 года назад

      @TheGermanDuck Friendly reminder that humans managed to build skyscrapers waaay *after* they built machinery to be able to create buildings. Instead of being snarky, think about human evolution and history, and how up until the last 150-200 years humans have been relying *mostly* on animals (horses, camels, donkeys etc) to carry stuff to long distances on land. Humans wouldn't accomplish lots of things without animals and their contribution. We've used animals to help us with carrying stuff, with agriculture and food production, we even managed to dress ourselves and create clothing by observing animals who didn't die from cold or felt uncomfortable due to having fur, and by getting their skins and wool/hairs from them to protect ourselves from the environment. We even got ideas from other species on how to survive or do certain things such as hunting, building and finding places to stay. Beavers are an example. Yes, even though we are the "smartest" and more "superior" of all the species (the former especially is debatable in some cases) , we're also very, very ungrateful towards animals and their help. You people need to have a wider perspective and understanding of things.

    Once i was sleeping on the side of a nearby river in a hammock. After sunset, i started to hear strange noises. Then hard chewing. Then big splashes. I knew they were beavers, but those strange noises always came back. They were like... forced flatulence. And bubbles sometimes. At first i thought it was just how they were pulling the wet wood around. But it became too clear and regular to accidentally create such sounds. Then i imagined, there was a fisherman on the other side, lifting his knees in the air and letting out what his output is capable of. But there is no village or even roads there, it can't be a fisherman. My final realization was that i was listening to long, loud and powerful beaver-farts all night long.
    Science, can you confirm it, please?

      reminds me of one of the brain and brawn books. a scout team was sent out to newly discovered planets to see if any of them might have highly intelligent life on them. one of their discoveries was a race that communicated entirely by farts. the brawn was sampling local fauna that was marked as edible. he got extremely bad gas. it confused the natives something awful. as they were trying really hard to learn his language so they could talk to him.

    I used to dismantle beaver dams for an explosive company. They needed to have water streams between every storage "bunker" to stop the fire spreading if there ever was one. I can tell you it is very well made and solid! And after breaking a dam, if you do not come back for 2-3 days, it pops back up like it was always there.xD

    What happens if there are too many many beavers in 1 specific area? Will they migrate? Do they fight or compete for territory? Or is it necessary for us to manage the population of beavers?

    • @mikeleikam2892
      @mikeleikam2892 4 года назад

      The three year olds will migrate. Old single males will also migrate and they do fight over territory. Huge bites through tail and hide. Trappers quit trapping beaver when they start breeding due to the bites in the hides. Too many beaver will also clear out all the trees along ,creeks, river ,and ponds ,then migrate.

    I live in Argentina; in the sixties our navy introduced the beavers in Tierra del Fuego. They want to start a fur business. Now, the beavers, without predators, made a mess with the ecosystem, because the trees don´t grow up near the dams they made, erosion, displacement of other species. Here they are a HUGE problem. they extends from all the island and some go to the continent.

    • @blueue4052
      @blueue4052 6 лет назад +19

      Martin Barba They didn’t belong there in the first place what do you expect. Beavers took 100,000 years to adapt to where they live/lived. That’s there natural habitat you can’t put them somewhere where they didn’t adapt for tens of thousands of years.

    • @mikeleikam2892
      @mikeleikam2892 6 лет назад +2

      Martin Barba some what like the introduction of the capybara and the nutria to the southern US. The fur isn't worth much so no one hunts/ traps them except as animal damage control.

    You nailed it my friend! Thank you so much for this short but extremely precise video about the creatures and created the land as we know it. I always like to refer to beavers, before climate change, when it comes to floods or droughts. Most people just have no idea, how crucial these little guys were, to the stability and fertility of land. Just like the rotting and decaying of the plants within the beaver ponds, release nutrients to wash down stream to further aid growth and development of healthy soil. I LOVE BEAVERS and like to go kayaking on their ponds, sit still and watch them build.

      Being a Safety scientist and an Environmental Professional and a Businessman, I can easily sure you that the only way of getting rains is forests. But in order to create forests it would take around 150 years. Therefore you need to adopt a rapid afforestation techniques of Ancient India and Japan.

    when it comes to nature God made the Beaver natures custodian and architect. No other creature, not even man understands the earth like a beaver. where the beaver dwells so exists lands rich and plentiful of nature. And at its roots is governing the collection and managing the flow of water, vital to the earth soil stability and growth.

      @Advocatus Diaboli Everything evolves over time. But make no mistake.. all science is theory, because we only have the ability to see a very small portion of things. without truly knowing a things creation , from beginning middle and end, how could your ever truly know whats actual fact. We label things fact when it best suit our criteria of understanding, what we can see and expect. but our analysis is only a glimpse in time. without knowing the full story, its impossible to for us to label anything as fact. .. for instance the smallest we can analyse is called strings, but what makes strings, and for what makes strings what made of them..so on and so forth deeper and deeper. not to mention is goes the opposite directions as well. and though we cant comprehend God, it is written that God says he is the beginning and end. of course we ask well were did God come from. and in this loop we find the very limitation of the human mind. we can only think by what we see. but God has gifted us with a way beyond our limitations.. faith. to believe without seeing, to know without knowing. but we are so very small and yet so very arrogant, that we remain searching in whats really a sandbox.
