I like them very much and i use them on Snare and Kick. I don't have to do very much with eq just as long as they are both tuned properly along with mic position. I plan on getting a pair of VP28. @@RecordingStudioLoser
I have one of those and I love it. The only issue is that it does not direct monitor the adat channels. You can only do that for the two preamps from the unit itself, and for direct monitoring the adats you need to do that from the DAW, but that's not that HUGE of an issue either. Great video btw!
Really cool video and nice to know this sound great. Could you use this as a pre-amp sending from and returning to your DAW (say in your master or mix buss chain)? Thanks for the very in-depth video!
Love the channel. I bet a dollar that if you routed the mic to the Neve and the Apollo, or even a Focusrite, and compared the same recording through each preamp, you would not hear a discernible difference in sound.
There’s noticeable different in the low end for me. That said any of them could work. And I tried to say that in the review. It comes more down to functionality and versatility and portability. Figure out what has the features you need for your own use case.
What’s the latency on the 88m? I’m used to an RME pci card and have never needed direct monitoring as I typically track with less than 2ms. Now that computer is ancient and I’m messing with a laptop and Presonus StudioLive at about 5ms with buffer at 64 or 128. Looking at Audient id44mkii or the Neve. I realize you can do direct on vocals and instruments, but what about vast or amp sims?
I didn’t notice anything off putting. I never use direct monitoring. I used amp sims quite a bit on the road to practice with. It never got in the way.
Thanks for the vid! That setup with the Clarette... You'd just be using low latency software monitoring?? Is that low enough for a band with drums? Or does it automatically 1:1 ins and outs over adat??
Some people say the headphone amp is underpowered. I'm really interested, but that one thing kind of scares me. I use DT770 and 880, both at 250 ohms. Any thoughts?
It’s not powerful some wall unit interfaces but I use DT 770s and it was loud for me. That said I tend to listen at a relatively moderate volume. I was never left wanting
Can this magic box by Neve be used as a poor man's AD converter passing through it the whole mix for some slight coloring of the sound (without destroying the depth, highs and lows...) or is it too optimistic? :)
RME BabyFace or, the closest to his use would definitely be the UCXII. As the UCXII is 20 In 20 Out ADAT In+Out, Class Compliant (Either you plug an usb stick and record straight, or plug an iPad), 2 Hybrid XLR/Jack inputs, +2 DI In. And their drivers are absolute rock solid, and you can do absolutely everything with them. So yeah, would be cool to compare.
Got mine a few days ago, to go with my 8801 and 8803, AWESOME bit of kit!!! 😁😁😁 The 88R preamps are INCREDIBLE!!!! The just have so much vibe and sound AMAZING!!! To compare it with something like The Apollo, which IS a sterling bit of kit for sure, but the 88M can also be used standalone for its Preamps, it's not totally reliant of software so it will NEVER go out of date either.. cool eh! 🥰🥰
Is anyone experiencing core audio dropouts on MAC OS with the Neve 88M? The 88M appears in Apple's Core Audio, but no sound is coming out of the DAW or the Mac’s audio routed into the Neve 88M. The only way to resolve this issue is to disconnect and reconnect the USB-C cable. Am I the only one experiencing this problem?
@@RecordingStudioLoser I tested several computers, including the MacBook Pro M3 Max running Sonoma 14.4.1, and the Intel MacBook Pro 2017 running OS Catalina 10.15.7.
