Great vid! Rims looks nice and good to see that the range difference is minimal. Can’t wait for my LR AWD to arrive! Will consider doing the same kind of idea for summer wheels. Forgive me if I get the same ones 😅
Great video! Cycling offers such a great look into your results. A general understanding in cycling is that any speed above around 10mph, aerodynamics becomes the greatest point of resistance, thus overtaking things like roll resistance from the tires. Cyclists go to extremes trying to reduce weight, roll resistance, drivetrain resistance, and improve aero, but the aero often gives the biggest gains (assuming a road bike that reaches optimal speed and stays at that speed). Side note…. On hill climb events, cyclists want the absolute lightest bike possible and go to insane extremes to accomplish this. I like your upgrade. It improves every aspect of the driving experience. The trade off is a bit of range which doesn’t really impact your actual driving experience at all. In the EV world consumers seem over obsessed about range, (which is terrible when it comes to people that want the best driving experience possible).
Yep I agree! While not as aerodynamic, they are a lot lighter and look much better. The slight range drop is definitely worth it. I'm very happy with them.
i think it’s the 38-40lb of air in the tires that skew this for me a bit. personally that’s too rough of a ride for me even though i know it would contribute a bit to the range. be interested to see how much of a drop off you get going to stock 36. maybe another tenth or 2? but your experiment of reducing unsprung weight is clearly valid. that’s a hidden spec that should be taken more seriously when modding/replacing tires & wheels. thanks jeff!
Happy to help! Honestly 36 psi vs 38 psi I don't notice a difference in the ride. I just always run 38ish psi. And the psi in both tests were basically the same, so there shouldn't be any impact there. Honestly 36 psi vs 38 psi won't really see much of a difference. You only really see a difference in efficiency if you change psi 5+ psi, and even then it's not much. Usually more impactful if the tire is underinflated as opposed to overinflated.
thanks for explanation 👍. it seems we are just about 1 year away from an explosion of ev specific gear (wheels, tires, etc). many companies have things in the works, but not available en masse yet. more choices will be nice. thanks again
I'm waiting for my EV6 (prob won't arrive until 2024 😔) but I ordered the top trim level before the upcoming GT. They come with the 20" tires and sacrifice a chunk of range. I wonder if going down to the 19" like yours with the rims is a good compromise on getting the range back because that's what I'd like to do.
Seems to me the biggest FUNCTIONAL reason for switching to lighter wheels is acceleration, 0-60 mph and quarter mile times. WHY didn't you actually assess these details? You were so thorough about range, but rolling MASS is not that big an effect on range once cruising speed is reached. Of course aero details are, so you do attend to that quality well. THANKS and HOPE you do acceleration comparisons asap...
Yeah? I'm a big fan of the style personally. I think they look so much better than stock. I've always been a fan of the split spoke concave design though.
I have an EV6 GT with those stupidly large 21 inch wheels that are NOT areodynamic. I bought some forged 20s today that weight 25 lbs. Gotta wait a month for them to get delivered. hopefully I end up with similar results than what you see here and increase my range to what non GT EV6s get
Man you're at 65% and 175 miles left on your car, my 80% charge shows me 175 miles at best. I am using Lvl 3 regen and drive in Normal Mode. Mix or highway and local driving.
after looking around with other wheels with similar style and material... there are far more expensive wheels than this lol...some go from 650-750.. sure we are used to 180-250 a wheel but these flow form/ forged wheels are kinda new with great new trend of designs.
Geeeez, I was expecting the lighter wheels to get way better range smh. No one does 60 or 70 mph bro thats just not realistic living near NY everyone does 80 mph everywhere so the actual range is more like 175 miles which is what prevents me from buying one.
Hope this is helpful for everyone! Sorry it took me a few days to post... I've had the flu - can you tell by my voice? 😂

Thanks! Yeah I'm very pleased with them. Feel free to get the same ones lol the car is very unique either way.
Thank you for the breakdown of all the information. Excellent video like always. Hopefully you are feeling better. I hate being sick.
Happy to help! I have a horrible cough but I'm making a little progress.

I'm wondering would it be much better if we both change to forged wheel & reduce the size to 18".
18" generally would be better for range and weight.

Yeah I agree I think a lot is going to be coming down the pipeline.
Beginner question - how are you getting that data display on the nav screen? Is that with that android add-on?
Yep the Tbox Plus I reviewed works great with that.

I have heard the 19s get about 10 miles more range.
Very helpful. The wheels would be great with an optional aero covers
I'm glad! Yeah that would be awesome if they offered that.
How do you get scanner on the car screen

I will test the acceleration soon 😊 just need it to be the same conditions as before and same location.
The only aspect of the rims that doesn't sell me is the look. Other than that, those are great.

Id be interested to see how the range is impacted when you lower the car.
Same here. I'll definitely test that.

Yeah the EV6 GT wheels are not ideal lol. Hopefully you see a solid improvement! What tires did you get?
I also have a gt can you let me know how you like the rims
@bigdi77 I'm very happy with them!

Haha yeah it definitely depends on how you drive. Also remember AC/Heat was off.
Would love to see both wheels in a wind tunnel test Jeff.
Yeah that would be cool to test.
I like the wheels. Just not a fan of the cost.
Yeah I get that. They're definitely not cheap. For forged wheels though they are definitely competitively priced.

Yeah good fully forged, these are a good price. Flow formed are less expensive, but also less quality. Better than cast though.
Can you send a link where you got the wheels?

Yeah weight isn't as impactful with EVs. Aero would help more and more efficient tires.
