On September 13, Tropical Storm Ike brought severe weather to Arkansas. I was startled by the new warning but, after several tornado warnings, I was rather excited that I finally caught an EAS thunderstorm warning. However I was rather confused when NWS switched the alert from a tornado warning...may have been a typo

I noticed it too. Our cable company used to use this same exact EAS screen up until 2006. We first got this EAS channel screen around 1998 and from what I remember durring the early days of us having this EAS screen, they used to have Spanish translation mode on. They later changed it to show only English text like around 2001.
I've been looking for this terrifying red comcast screen for years! Used to scare the shit outta me when I was a kid back in 1997-2003

bgo #15 It sounds different from the video. It sounded like rapid gunfire with bombs and a heavy, scary bass. I'd hide under my bed when that shit came on.
bgo #15 The sound was most likely a primative form of the SAME code system.
bgo #15 I think it was how the channel's signal was cut off, and stopped transmitting the decryption (????) codes for audio??? I have no idea either???
I'm guessing it's just placeholder audio for when the headend forgot to record the "THE EMERGENCY ALERT SYSTEM HAS BEEN ACTIVATED, PLEASE TUNE TO CHANNEL [whatever] FOR FURTHER INFORMATION" audio.
That jazz... I WAS LISTENING TO THAT!!
What's with the exploding noise when the EAS red screen comes up. I remember this screen up until 2010 and it made that noise on my TV.
I almost thought the EAS details channel with the red ticker said "SOMEWHAT IMPORTANT" at the top.

I remember being 3 years old and seeing this alert on the screen. I grew up in Arkansas. I was quite spooked by the sounds of the emergency alert system.
i had Hurricane Warning during that day. We evacuated to suger land, TX.
"Hm... Tomorrow will be pretty warm, I guess I should-"

Ike was a crazy storm 😭 saying this as a Texan, it's not as worse as what hit Galveston in 1900 tho and like they both happened near my birthday too

Never in my life did I see the EAS inform the person to tune in to channel 13.
Vast Broadband does that and the channel is 2.
Many cable companies do that actually.
