  • In this video, we are towing with the ID.Buzz across the mountains in Norway. In part 2, we will have a fully loaded van and trailer, in addition to winter tires and colder weather, which can make things more interesting.

The towing spec of this car is actually quite funny even in Europe. My diesel Golf Alltrack got approved to tow 2 tons in Sweden, but such a big van got approved for only 1 ton.

Yes, they should have higher towing specs. The iX, Model X is approved for over 2 tons.

It is always useful to have a utility trailer. Ours has a capacity of 2 000 kg, and has a bogie (4 wheels on two axles). Unfortunately, Buzz can only pull 1 000 kg. I encourage people to take their trailer licence aka European class "E", because this means that one can use a trailer with a weight/ mass limit that exceeds that of the vehicle pulling it. With an ordinary B licence, one is only allowed to pull 750 kg, and the trailer has to be registered with that (or a lower) mass. Since I retired, and no longer need to use a trailer with a commercial vehicle belonging to the schools where I taught. Thus, I have allowed my C1E licence to expire, but retain my BE licence. This is important because I can still use the 2 000 kg trailer. This licence is also important if one wants to pull a house trailer.

I don't know where you are in Europe, the law might differ. But in Sweden, anyone holding a B license can surely pull more than 750 kg, as long as the total weight of the trailer and car doesn't exceed 3.5 tons, or 750 kg trailer if the total weight exceeds 3.5 tons. And of course, the trailer weight should be within the allowed towing capacity of the car itself. As a BE holder, I was actually shocked during my BE lessons that so much weight is allowed without extra safety education. For example, some 2-ton cars can pull a 1.5-ton trailer with just a B license. I also encourage people to get a BE license, or at least get some BE education, as long as they need to use a trailer heavier than 750 kg, regardless of the total weight.

@@lw1073 I am a Norwegian, and the rules in Norway are now identical to the Swedish. When I first received my Norwegian BE certificate 43 years ago, the rules were much more rigid. 750 kg was the limit, for a B certificate without an E, period. They were even more rigid when my son took his BE certificate. I looked up the Swedish rules and they are the same as the Norwegian. My experience is that very light vehicles have very light trailer limits (often under 750 kg) , while heavier vehicles have weight limits that put the combined weight over 3 500 kg. The empty weight for our ID.Buzz is about 2 500 kg, with a driver, with a GVW of 3 000 kg. So there is not much room in the equation for a trailer exceeding 750 kg. For the Swedish rules see:www.transportstyrelsen.se/sv/vagtrafik/Korkort/har-korkort/fordon-du-far-kora/personbil-med-slap/

@@BrockMcLellan Thank you for sharing. The related law probably became looser in the past 40 years. Specifically for the ID Buzz, you are correct. As the GVW is already 3000, the only option for B license drivers is for trailers below 750 kg.
