Fun With Pyrography // Woodburning Our Logo On A Mallet // Woodworking

- In this video, I try my hand at pyrography, or wood burning. Last week, I showed you how I built this mallet from scrap wood. This week, I’ll show you how I burned my logo into the head by hand and applied the finish.
I used a handheld wood burner, which can be found at many home centers. The head of the mallet is made of oak, which is apparently notoriously difficult to use for wood burning. But I had fun trying to make it work and managed to get a decent result. Then I finished it with tung oil to bring out the natural beauty of the wood.
Here's the mallet build video: • Building a Wooden Mall...

Thanks for checking out our video! If you haven’t seen the first part to this, where I built the mallet, you can see that here: ruclips.net/video/cp5Q74ZDO9s/видео.html
Pyrography is hard work, that's why I usually leave it to my wife to do! Great work 👍👍
Thanks! I saw her work with your collab video with Poor Man DIY. She did awesome! Maybe she can give me pointers some day!
@@WhiteLabWorkshop I am sure she would be happy to!
A Win Win for you both👍🏻👍🏻
Definitely!
Looks good to me, gives it a nice touch on the mallet.
Thank you! I think the same thing. I might have to get a brand at some point, for efficiency sake, though. Or make my kids do it for me!
Love the logo and using the tung oil really brought out the logo GREAT job 👍🏻
Thanks! I really like how it looks together!
Nice touch for the mallet finish. 👍🏻but I can definitely relate to wood burning by hand onto oak. It definitely does fight you! You did a great job! ✌🏻
Thanks! I had plans to do more wood burning designs on it, but decided that would take too much away from the mallet itself. Plus the oak made the whole thing more work than I expected. I got tired of fighting it 😁
it was very pleasant. Your dog is so sweet
Thanks! And yes, Duke is a really good boy :)
I have always loved wood burning I think it is a great skill. Looks great 😁
Thanks! It really was fun to play around with. What is your favorite species of wood to work with?
@@WhiteLabWorkshop my favourite that I have worked with so far is Australian red gum
Oh cool. I imagine that’s a little easier to come by in your neck of the woods!
yes but it is still very expensive. My mate used to be an arborist and got me a slab 😁
Awesome! That’s a good kind of friend to have!
I think that came out really good! Seems you got some help! Haha! Great video! 😃
Haha! Thanks! Duke was definitely there for the assist!
I think it turned out nice! Keep pumping out those videos!
Thank you! I’ll certainly try to keep them coming!
Looks good to me! The flat tip sure seemed to work better than the pointy one for filling things in. I guess for detail work wood selection would be of paramount importance. Maybe your next mallet could be from Maple?
Thanks! Yes, the flat tip was definitely the way to go for the majority of it. Woodburning is something I’ve barely played with, so it was fun to learn a little about the process, including the fact that oak isn’t great for it. I bet you’re right that maple would be, though. The handle on this mallet is ash, I should try done is that and see if that works better too.
We think it looks great. Who is going to put the mallet up to their face and notice what only you consider imperfections? I think I need to try this some day! Also.... we like the filming your 8 year old did!
Thank you! It does look pretty good from a distance, so all good. And I also used footage from my 11 year old, but hers just blended in and looked pretty good. The 8 year old’s footage was a little more unique!
@@WhiteLabWorkshop My wife and I are old school and we love videos that show parents getting their children involved, be it with the diy projects or the RUclips channel. Too many parents hand their children a game console or smartphone and have little interaction. You and your wife are doing a wonderful job with your children!! Keep it up
That really means a lot! Thank you! We certainly try to get our kids involved in everything we do, if they are interested. Here, the balance is that we don’t want them exposed to the world by showing their faces on camera. So we try to get them involved behind the scenes or in close up work.
Really nice 😊 Oak is difficult and Pine can be more so 😁 I make my own pyrography machines using simple electronics. Instant and easily controllable heating of the pens. I'm planning to create a build series in the future. You would find it a pleasure to work with, especially for shading technique 😊 ॐ
That sounds really cool! I look forward to seeing that!
