I have a 2019 M109R in that same white and blue color scheme and I love it. With the huge price difference, you can mod the Suzuki to your liking and still be way below the Harley's MSRP. After an intake, exhaust (optional for you, Kris) and an ECU tune from BCS Performance & Controls, I guarantee that you'll have no more complaints about the powertrain. And if history is any indication, the M109R will win in a landslide when it comes to reliability vs an HD.
Hey there 09 m109r owner Im 180cm tall and weigh in at 108kg. The bike is made for someone my size. The riding position has the bumps being obsorbed through my hips and not my back. There have been no issues with the gear box or clutch. Keep in mind there's a lot of bottom end torque on the m109 and you could try progressive shifting. There was talk when the bike first came out in 06 of guys going into lower gears on wet roads a dropping their bikes... Hours of life to pay for a bike,. With the price of an HD that high, its Boulevard 10 times out of 10 for me...
Running a higher gear than might be necessary would certainly work as there's plenty of torque down low, especially in wet weather where it's all about being smooth. I tend to find the only bikes I can absorb bumps through my hips and legs are those with my feet far enough under me that I can use them and/or grip the tank with my knees, which most cruisers don't lend themselves too. But I'm a bit lighter too, which wouldn't help with the rear suspension. The M109R really does deliver on price at the end of the day!
check Moore Mafia just dropped a vid where the flashed the ECU and gained huge horsepower and got rid of that flat spot....but with such a torchy bike not sure why you'd want to flick up and down gears except for the fun of it??
I bought my M109R in 2007 (yes, still have it) to park next to my very-modified 2002 Hayabusa (yes, still have that one). When these new HDs came out with the 114" engines available I thought, "Maybe Harley is finally going to get it right!" ... Nope. I took two for test rides, a Fat Boy then a Fat Bob, and they're still tremendously-overpriced slugs. I've ridden all over the U.S. on my M109R and only ever had to change the tires, oil and a battery. A 2007 with 116,000 miles on it and it both out-accelerated and out-handled the HD. I have over 30,000 miles on the brake pads on the Suzuki and it stopped better than the Fat Boy (it felt pretty close to the Fat Bob, honestly). Harley just continues to embarrass themselves year after year and ride on the laurels they built after WWII. Unless you're the kind of douche that tattoos your fraternity letters on your arm, and wears a "Ferrari" windbreaker everywhere you go, save your money and buy Japanese or European. Just my two American cents. Cheers... and keep the rubber side down.
@goodfella21f Actually, my Japanese bikes have been reliable but I've certainly ridden better quality bikes (as far as materials, welding, fit and finish, etc.). A buddy has an older (2005?) BMW K1600 that he's never had a problem, rides really nice, and the quality looks a lot better than my M109R (my Hayabusa has been heavily modified - bodywork and powertrain). Anyway, I agree that Japanese is the way to go for an "all around" great bike. Cheers.
@@kingbrutusxxvi have you had any problems with the transmission or anything else? I ask because I'm interested in one bit have read about the "second gear problem", clutch cable snapping, engine mounts etc. Be interesting to know what with you having an older machine and the miles you've done.
I bought my m109 in 2007 as well. Will never sell it, blue with white stripe it’s a handful but so so rewarding. I don’t have any hunting but the gear changes require a deft touch
Nothing, if you just like comparing a single figure on paper to judge a whole bike, I take it? This could revolutionise motorcycle reviews everywhere if it catches on too.
I own a 2014 M109R, never had the issue of it jumping out of gear. It doesn’t hunt at all either it’s actually quite smooth. I test rode a couple Harley-Davidson’s before buying the M109R (fat bob, a VROD and the breakout). The M109R I found better to ride than these models. The FXDR 114 may be a step up from the models I tested. I agree on the rear shock on the M109R. Trying to keep away from the rough areas of the road is something I constantly do. My M109R I bought second hand with less than 10000km and with aftermarket pipes/air filters at $12500. The value for money in this bike over the Harley is not even comparable.
The hunting and gearbox seem to be issues some find and some don't, so it's hard to say whether it may partly come down to fuel, and possibly riding habits with the gearbox. Like you say though, at the end of the day you simply can't argue with the value, and you can certainly do some mods while still keeping your investment well below much of the competition.
The 109r for the money all day long. I went from a modded FZ10 to a bone stock 109r and havent looked back once. I am maybe 10mph slower in the turns but I will admit it took a while to get used to the pegs scraping in the corners coming from nothing but sportbikes. Once I realized that my foot was not actually going to come off, the 109r holds the corners great once you get them turned in. So you gotta push on the bars a bit harder? you get used to it quick and don't even notice. The kudos you get from the CBR's and the R1's at the end of the road make it worth it when they see you're still with them. And why would anyone downshift all the way into first on this bike? 2nd gear engine braking gets you below 20mph and you don't have to fight the bike. Why are you fighting the bike? At the end of the day, the 109 gives you sportbike performance (OK no it doesnt, but it will stay with them no problem) with cruiser comfort on the freeways. At half the price. What's not to like? Besides you can take off the back seat and put the wife on her own damn bike as a bonus. Plus liquid cooled? yes please, can I have another? Oh wait, yes I can!
I've been riding since the 80s and hate all these electronics. I feel that it takes away from your skills that need to be developed. ABS specially. You don't learn to modulate and to apply just the right amount of pressure to stop the bike without sliding. ABS just teaches you to squeeze as hard as you can and the computer does the rest. Rev matching ,ABS, traction control, Hate them all. Takes no skill to use them. Maybe I'm just old school. I had an 09 M109r, put 150000 miles on it and now have a 2019 M109r. I love the power and the Brutish way it delivers it. No ABS, no traction control, vibrates a little, but when I open it up it just reminds me of why I love this bike. 150k with no issues. Can Harley say that?? And that low end snappiness you're complaining about and trying to "Smooth out". That's called "Torque." And most people love that.
Early ABS systems which intervened much too early may have risked that, if people were particularly poor riders but I don't really think that's the case now. The starting to slide point should be where your ABS activates, so there's no real difference in learning the limits. Learning to maximise your braking without ABS intervention is functionally exactly the same as learning to maximise it before losing traction, which is what riders should aim for. I guess it's possible all the new tech allows people who probably don't have the proficiency or right mindset to ride, where they'd otherwise crash a few times and quit, but I would guess even all the tech can't save those people!
I have the 19 M109R my friend has an 18 HD Breakout 114. The HD is already leaking through the fork seals. All of the hardware on his bike is rusting. You can tell it’s cheaply made when you get into the details of the bike. His bike sits next to mine in my garage because he stores it here, and I don’t understand where the difference in price comes in. After cruise control and extended handlebars he’s at $31k and I paid $14 out the door.
Ouch, yea that's not good to hear, especially being stored side by side, you just wouldn't expect there to be a difference between bikes, everything should be rust proof. The Harley name is a whack of the price, but the M109 is pretty unbeatable value at the same time.
@@MotoJournoKris , I mean, I get it. The Harley has electronic cruise and LED lights and its a six speed which I wish my 109 was. But that's a lot of money for the difference. I think his Harley should be priced at like 18k. I think Indian is starting to head that way too. Polaris is out of their minds, though I happen to believe that Indian is becoming a little more polished than Harley as far as Aesthetics goes. Sorry, getting off on a tangent here. But bang for the buck, is in the Suzuki. If you want status and can afford it, 114 all day.👍🏼
@@MrNismopro Absolutely, that's why it's good to see options like the M109, ideally they push prices down and force the segment to be more competitive. I think the Harley brand is so powerful they can demand a premium. But it really depends if you're a rider who goes for the brand thing or not.
Harleys are a poor finish these days I have a old evo the chrome is perfect I also have a 2008 softail the chrome work is terrible compared to the old bike ,think I'll try out the suzuki next
I went from sport bikes to a muscle cruiser. My last bike was a ZX10 and now I have the M109R I’m pleasantly surprised by the M109r. Definitely need to watch your throttle control. But beating srt8s off the line is loads of fun. Harley Riders respect it for sure. Either way. Ride safe fellas
Lots of Harley haters here. Solid review, I've ridden both and prefer the 114 in the FXDR it's a powerful cruiser, fit and finish are amazing, the M8 is a solid engine. If it comes down to price ONLY then let's call it for what it is. You can't afford one so you shit on it, let's be real not many ppl can afford to spend $18k on a toy. My 2 cents. For background I have a 2018 Street bob, a 2015 VFR800, and a 2015 CBR1000RR SP (for track days 😁)
That's a nice collection, and appreciate your insight! Price is definitely a huge factor on this one, and being bikes you're not likely to commute on or daily ride certainly compounds that!
It's not that anybody's a Harley hater it's just they perform terrible for the dollar they're always overpriced and underperformed you're paying for name only it's always been that way
Pretty good review, i have an '17 M109R and a Harley Road Glide so i see the differences from the 2 brands. The hunting you refer to i don't feel in my bike and i also don't have any gear box issues. The bike does however have a very sensitive throttle (which you mentioned) which makes it more difficult with clutch work in parking lots. There's a device that's sold for it that fools the ECU into thinking it's always in 4th gear that fixes that issue. The Suzuki is a good muscle bike, not a good bike to lean over in the twisties. Like you im not that tall (5'9) but enjoy the seating position. I made a 600 mile trip on the Suzuki and was more comfortable than on my Harley.... that was even surprising to me lol. Overall i think the Suzuki is obviously the best bike for the price, it's not trying to fool you by trying to do more than one thing well. It's a muscle bike that's good with straight line speed and it looks good. It's like having a '69 Chevelle in the garage.🍻
True! The value is amazing, and at the end of the day you've got to look at the intent behind what they are trying to offer. One thing the Japanese manufacturers are doing really well is offering some older design, relatively unchanged bikes for amazing value, where we'd otherwise be losing those options to more expensive, updated or new versions.
HD are definitely expensives . It’s not that I can’t afford them but more that I don’t want to spend for a motorcycle as much as a new car !. I got nothing against Harleys I really love the Vrod!. But boy that BOSS is beautiful!!!!🔥🔥
Throttle tamer takes care of the snatchy throttle. A TRE (timing retarder eliminator) takes care of the hunting. 50 bucks in mods that you can easily do your self and the 109 is sorted.
I was cringing a little with your onboard camera footage. You are chasing your corners late as it seems to me that you are a formation styled rider. Look up racing lines and apex points. It will improve your riding a lot and it's very easy. Thanks for the video review.
I'm not a formation style rider, these things simply don't corner like a sportsbike or nakedbike with those enormous rear tyres. No doubt I've got plenty to improve/learn in riding technique though.
@@MotoJournoKris Thanks for taking the time to reply mate. I wish I got the ride the bikes you do so kudos to you for real. I grew up riding old heavy tanks so I totally understand they don't handle like sport bikes. You can go a lot faster or ride more confidently if you position yourself better on entry, apex, and exit points. There's always more to learn and you're doing awesome brother. Loved the video and I've subbed. Thank you !
I thought about getting a Harley but I wanted to stay true to Suzuki cuz they never let me down. I started with the m50, then the gsxr 600, and now the M109r. That progression felt right and Harley sounds better but I personally enjoy the m109 much more
Hi here in Norway they don’t sell the Suzuki. But the Harley costs almost 39000$. I still don’t understand why harleys cost so much... I understand the prices behind Ducati (technology, performance, continuous innovation etc.).. but a Harley for that price ? Anyway I would chose the Suzuki : more reliable than Harley and I old have 15k $ to buy other two bikes 😉
It seems like the pricing is a lot more competitive in the USA, but in other parts of the world the prices rise - probably because of all the import duties and taxes and such. Some models are much more competitively priced though, like the Street Rod, so it's a hard one. That said there's the innovation and development going on at Harley, it's just not as focused on outright performance or extensive electronic packages, as neither are as integral on cruisers, where those are huge selling points across most of the Ducati line-up. It'll be interesting to see how their new roadster and adventure models go though, and where the electric bikes head if they offer something similar to the Livewire but at a price-point that is more accessible. At the moment it's very much an early adopters market on the electrics, but if that becomes more viable they are a step ahead of much of the competition.
Mmmmm..mine is a 2011 and I've had it from new. Got 54k on it now, and i must say its never missed a beat.To be honest, ive never even looked at the plugs yet,and i service it every 5k. Not once has mine slipped outa gear, it handles gr8 around corners + R,bouts(and its got a 260 rear tyre). Never goes hunting on revs, and itll cruise on 140 all day long,on a no mod engine. Its lowered 2 inch at the rear, and with my wife on the back its no different. These are a great bike for the $$, and id recomended it any 1 looking for a comfy tourer.
Really good review for anyone thinking of this bike Kris. I have owned this bike, sold it end of last year. There are a lot of short comings but that also makes it the bike it is. The popping out of gear generally only happens when accelerating really hard. It has been said it’s because the gearbox can’t handle the torque. But Suzuki refuse to do anything about it. The steering I didn’t like at all, taking it up the old road I was being overtaken by even cars because you can only lean it so far. You need to know how to counter steer with this bike. The fuelling is off and is snatchy, but can be fixed with a fuelling controller. Like you it never really felt comfortable with the reach to the handle bars. You can get raisers which I did, but never got around to installing them. It amazes me that Suzuki would allow this bike to get sold with so many shortcomings. The gear box and fuelling would be enough, knowing what I know now, to look else where. That being said it had a lot of character and I do miss it. Very good looking bike!
Thanks! It's certainly been successful enough that you can see why it still sells, so whether it's worth the investment in changing things, or just letting owners do the usual popular mods which cover many of them probably comes into it. There's always that age old debate between those who expect bikes perfect off the showroom floor to those who think some modifications to more ideally suit the individual rider is the norm. That's the thing with so many of the bikes though, we upgrade and then dearly miss them, with the new bike having it's own quirks and sometimes not measuring up quite well enough in comparison over the long term!
I'm a M109r rider. Bought the bike because everyone had Harley's ( Before I learned MC history). However a little trail braking drops it right into the turn
I own a Fat Bob S and an M109R. The Suzuki definitely out performs Harley's M8 motors by a country mile in terms of power. Its closer to a Vrod in power output. The Fat Bob definitely has a friendlier throttle and is a lot more forgiving to ride though. A newer rider would probably prefer the Harley but it does feel slow getting off of the Suzuki.
On paper, or on a sportsbike, less so between these two bikes I would say. I don't think that many people would be noticing that as a difference between the two machines.
Something else needs mentioned, the 109 MSRP is about 15k but around here you can get new last yrs model for about 12k, don't know the fxdr, but the Harley Standard(w/107) is 13.6k, Street Bob 14.6k.....and as mentioned in video you need some long arms to actually fit the 109 I would certainly get the Standard before the 109 at 12k
I’ve owned a Yamaha Road star Warrior for years…The only bike I’d ever consider replacing it with would be a Harley FXDR..but I’d still keep the Warrior just in case I was disappointed.
'07 109R, I am only 160 lbs and had the same problem on road and speed bumps but if get a spanning wrench and reduce the tension on the shock it goes away.
Id love to see you revisit this after you sort your stock tune issue with a tre or whatever route you choose to remedy. Given the majority vote claim is that it turns the 109 into a completely different beast.
Harley is for sure overpriced. It's unbelievable how much margin there is. Harley imports parts from 9 countries. If you think your new Harley is "all American" you better research. I have a 19 BOSS M109R and I ride with my friend on his 18 Breakout we have almost the same mileage and his bike already needs fork seals and had a timing issue. 0 issues with my 109.
@@eunoiayoung4489 , nah, one thing to keep in mind. Get what makes you happy, and what makes you feel good inside. Some things require a little more upkeep than others. But if the Breakout defines you, that’s what you get. Look, I wish I had electronic cruise control and keyless start and electronic throttle by wire on my 109 but I deal with it because I’m old school. It’s not that it’s a bad bike. I think Harley has just gotten out of hand. I’d have to say that Harley has the best paint quality though. Man, hope this makes you feel better.😉
it is an excellent bike transmission is not as clunky as you may think it's raw power you have to get it up around 5.5. to 6 RPMs then it won't be clunky from first to second
.. yes I'm in the market for a M109 R first bike was the Blvd C50T and so was the 2nd 500 miles had an accident with it and with the full coverage got 1999 Honda Valkyrie InterState 5100 miles Love it but time to upgrade the first Blvd C50T 1950 miles and yes do like the white / silver M109 Rs Thank you Ride On ~ ...
Thank you, did enjoy video, I’ve been wondering who or when someone was going to compare the M109R with the more modern bikes out now! Very informative, keep up the good work!
I don't know about the fxdr, other than "that's not me", however if you're wanting a bike to keep then get the fxdr, if you want to change bikes every other year(and you're not particular about sticking to one brand) then get the 109......the less you pay the higher % you'll get back selling in 5 yrs or less, if you keep a bike 10yrs you'll get way higher % back with a Harley I have bought new 19 M90 and C90T, and a 07 Wide Glide, yes the Suzuki's cost less, but they have a whole lotta cheap in them. When it comes to buying either OEM or aftermarket parts Suzuki is lacking, 109 is better than 90, hardly nothing can be found for 90. He talked about work to get the 109 over on the edge of the rear tire.....the M's handle like a Sportster, they turn more with less lean, handles curves best at higher speeds, but are harder to lean, the C handles like a Dyna easy easy easy to flip back and forth. If you learn how to handle the 109 you will be zipping thru curves(especially if you accelerate thru curves)
True, I'd think the torque would be the bigger factor here being cruisers, but it will very much vary rider to rider on what they are after. More horsepower for less cost is going to be very attractive to some riders!
@@MrHarlemknight73 They never talk about the reliability of the 109. I have a 2006 and it still runs strong. That Harley is probably going to require more maintenance.
I love the originality of HD's, but God bless Japan for building ever lasting machines that are built to be abused AND accessible to everyone 's wallets. That's why they sell more. Time to learn HD
Lucky for me I'm 6ft2" 88kg and can handle the m109r easily, yes they have there little issues but overall they're awesome, as for the rear end bucking around I think s bit more weight might be needed...
Here is my opinion, m109r is just first try from suzuki, if they perfected it and build another model of that capacity, it could rival Harley that has been making large bikes for decades, give Suzuki time, they will get there,
I have an 07 m109r and I’d put anything against it straight, turns what have you. Mine is tuned lowered etc however holds its on with rockets or anything it’s come across. Note you couldn’t give me 2,000 fxdr for my m109r.. most importantly you can bang it out and not worry about having to tighten bolts and rattles. One last note the performance parts don’t cost no where near HD stands for hundreds of dollars.. M109r for the win
Sounds like you've got it sorted, that's one of the downfalls of testing stock bikes, versus what's more commonly found on the road with owners - a little work can often transform a bike. Affordability is definitely a win on the Suzuki, interesting to hear that extends past just the purchase price, and also speaks really well of the M109R that it's still going strong 13+ years down the track.
Moto Journo Kris yes sir what I like is the fact it hasn’t changed since 05 and still can perform with the current up to date motorcycles. Mine is lowered two inches tuned by Twisted Technology out of Fort Worth TX..transmission switch to get rid of governor which essentially tricks the ECU to believe its in fourth. K&N filters cobra drag pipes FI2000 fuel programmer dyno jet pc5 with no rev limiter (134hp dyno to the wheel, with still wiggle room). the next phase would be punching it out, cam, Turbo or NOS. Truly no need for all that as it has enough for my liking
@@WilliamJohnson-bc3wd That sounds wicked! Pretty amazing it's been around for so long for sure, hopefully the new emission regulations don't squeeze all these bikes out.
That's transmission or gear hunting, as opposed to engine hunting, where you get erratic rpm at idle or with a steady throttle, which can cause surging.
What????? I've never seen or experienced any of these issues you're claiming. Im 5'6 and 187+ lbs. Who's paying you to say these things? Anyway, I'm an owner of one of the M109R and I can't complain. This is a man's bike. I think you're being really bias. I'm not one to think people's intentions are intentional bad, or purposely making up stuff, but I think your intentions here is seriously flawed.
That's weird, as quite a few M109R owners have been quite honest in saying the issues I mentioned are easily fixed and seem to be well known within the community, so I'd say I was pretty on point. I tested both of these bikes for a few weeks, I don't own either of the bikes, and just put together videos on my thoughts. Glad to hear you're happy with your M109R, how'd you find the FXDR? If you want to make some actual specific points or criticisms, instead of casting aspersions, feel free.
How you gonna compare a bike with a liquid cooled high performance engine (M109R) to a bike that's got an air cooled pushrod cruiser engine that can't get out of its own way (FXDR 114)? Lol
So the fxdr wins in everything except price......and if you'd gone with fxdr it wouldn't be popping out of first when down shifting, and in the unlikely that it did, you wouldn't have the dealership telling you that's normal.
Yeah that Harley is nice, until you hit 15k and you have to replace motor mounts and start getting motor leaks. That’s where you reevaluate your decisions... but nice review budd 👍
You are saying HARLEY has a smoother engine compared to Japanese bike. Is that a compliment to Harley? Harley should be in shame now for producing a smoother engine than Japanese.
Not sure I know the difference, would something like the Diavel be a hyper cruiser, or is that reserved for custom bikes with crazy power and power (like turbos and similar).

The hunting is a tune issue. Thats not the bikes fault its the governments fault. Yamaha and abunch of other manufacturers tune their bike really really lean to beat emissions. Get a tune done correctly and that hunting issue will go away. Wouldnt knock the bike for that at all.
If that's the tune the bike comes with, then that's an issue with the bike, it may seem harsh but there's plenty of bikes which can be transformed with a small investment in tuning, brakes, suspension, gearing or comfort. It looks like the community has various fixes/mods for the issues I mentioned though from the feedback, so I'd say it's a fair representation for an absolutely stock machine. But moving forward I'll try and do some research into issues I bring up to see if there's easy fixes to include as a note, and make it clear I'm testing a totally stock bike. After people brought this up I looked into it and there's lots of riders shocked what an ECU flash or a tune did for them, in improving fueling, so it was definitely worth mentioning, I just didn't even think of it at the time! It really sucks how a lot of these older machines are being squeezed out by the new emissions regulations, with some pretty much killed off entirely as they ramp up. I know my biggest gripe with the Ninja 400 is the fueling cutting off on a closing throttle which is for the same reason and I always bring that up if I recommend the bike to people. I did try and stress the M109 is pretty much unbeatable on value though, so I hope that came across.
Oh ok yeah mine does that, I think it’s the fuel/air delivery issue. My 109 needs more fuel , I think the map they made the bike with was to get it to run clean, the thing I noticed right away was the typical lean pop on decel, if this bike had a carburetor I would go straight to the main jet , the bike needs more air, fuel and exhaust then tell us what you think of it. Also the timing is retarded from the factory in 1st, 2nd and 3rd gear , ever notice how it feels like it pulls harder in 4th and it has more bark?
@@troydavenport5638 Yep, it seems a common mod to fix this problem is a fuel controller, and for the price you can see why people would be happy to spend a little more after purchase (which is part of the fun anyway).
There is a place up here in Washington called Gman industries that sells parts for our bikes , I talked to him on the phone and he said with the kit installed you can do 3 foot wheelies which is a pretty big deal with how much it weighs
Boy. You’ve stirred the pot with these Japanese fan boys. Half of them probably never owned or even tried a Harley. Let alone own a bike to begin with. These comments about horsepower are cracking me up. The M109 has over 100 pounds more weight, while the Harley has similar torque. But ya. Stay mad.😂😂 The fxdr and fatbob out handle the M109 in every way possible. To each their own.🥴
Yep, they are both great machines really. But there is a lot of differences, especially when you just compare bike to bike without considering the big price difference and what that justifies.
Yea I really struggle to properly capture the exhausts/running sounds accurately, even with three different recording devices now. Can sometimes get something decent but it never does the bikes full justice.
What is it with these two wheeled tractors they badge as Harley Davidson's they are absolute overpriced shite BUT people still buy them over Japanese quality machinery
Harley is over priced and overrated for a bike that’s no longer made in the USA. I’ll stick with my Star Raider. I looked at the Harley’s and asked to test ride one. I was told that if I needed to test drive a Harley I didn’t need one.
How you can compare a bad quality Harley with the m109r. The Harley is like riding a donkey, Harley Technik is old fashion designed and I deserves not to be mentioned as a modern bike
Good points, and that colour scheme really is exceptional!
Nice. This was helpful. I took a screenshot
Hey there 09 m109r owner
Im 180cm tall and weigh in at 108kg.
True, I’m 2m and I find the m109r a bit small. Just like every bike i’ve ever ridden 🙈I’ts a torque monster thou!
check Moore Mafia just dropped a vid where the flashed the ECU and gained huge horsepower and got rid of that flat spot....but with such a torchy bike not sure why you'd want to flick up and down gears except for the fun of it??
@goodfella21f Actually I ridden some really nice BMWs and the recent Triumphs are pretty fun. Cheers.
Dude, shut the fuck to with your lying Harley hating ass. If I had to bet, you’ve probably never been on ANY Harley.
The M109R makes 128HP, the HD makes 90. What more do you need to know?
Nothing, if you just like comparing a single figure on paper to judge a whole bike, I take it? This could revolutionise motorcycle reviews everywhere if it catches on too.
It does not make 128 HP stock.
@@eveen3492 127hp. Approx 110hp at the tire stock
Ummmm. Yes. It. Dose
HP, about half the price, better looking, (probably) more reliable. No wonder HD sales are nose diving year after year
I put a 260 metzler on the back and that rounder profile really helps
Why did it take over a decade for HD to catch up to a bike that Suzuki has essentially left unchanged for its entire run?
And. Edge. It. Will. Eat. That hd. U. Need. To. Learn to ride.
I put a Nitron shock on mine, that was a vast improvement. Soon as the standard one tires, it's well worth doing.
I put the Pirelli night dragon on my M109 and the handling improved a whole lot. The bike felt like it wanted to be a sport bike more than a cruiser.
It's definitely got the performance that leans it in that direction! It does seem like the right mods make a significant difference too.
Harleys are way better quality, look at the details of a Harley. Harleys are under powered tho
I went from sport bikes to a muscle cruiser. My last bike was a ZX10 and now I have the M109R
I’m pleasantly surprised by the M109r. Definitely need to watch your throttle control. But beating srt8s off the line is loads of fun. Harley Riders respect it for sure. Either way. Ride safe fellas
I have a 2018 M109R and love it
Lots of Harley haters here.
It's not that anybody's a Harley hater it's just they perform terrible for the dollar they're always overpriced and underperformed you're paying for name only it's always been that way
Mine is clunky but does not pop out of gear or hunt. I have the 2018.
Definitely, there's always that judgement where the money goes!
Above the great review here, I love the great diplomacy you use with some of the people and their comments (O: Hats off !
Throttle tamer takes care of the snatchy throttle. A TRE (timing retarder eliminator) takes care of the hunting. 50 bucks in mods that you can easily do your self and the 109 is sorted.
That sounds a lot more affordable than a tune or piggyback module.
That progression felt right and Harley sounds better but I personally enjoy the m109 much more
Suzuki make great bikes, and for the price the M109R is amazing.
I have a 07 109 and love it power to spare never had a harley yet!
The real question is how FUN is it to ride compared to the harley and which one makes u FEEL better when riding it around.
Why don't they sell Suzuki in norway??
John Llewellyn yes but not this one. Models without ABS are not allowed here since 2016 or 2017
@@omarpiane2379 wow, safety is big, ABS is not important to me, i upgraded my brakes on my 2012 M109R, they stop you on a dime, no worries at all
@@diningroomfish5470 I think that's an EU requirement that all motorcycles over a certain capacity have ABS now.
Get rid of factory Dunlops and handling becomes much more agile. I am on my second 109, and will only run Metzler.
Can you put 10 inch ape bars on it ? ?
What year model do you own? From what i know, that was reworked a few years ago & hasnt been an issue these last few model years.
My bike does the hunting as well, I have cobra pipes and tuner on it but am planning to get ecu remapped on dyno to try and smooth it out
Quite a few people have mentioned that makes the world of difference!
I want the M109R to be my first cruiser. I ride a 2017 Suzuki GSXR 1000R.
Great option for still providing the kind of performance you'll enjoy coming from a sportsbike!
A test ride will answer all your questions
@@LONEWOLF-vl6of the only issue. Is that I wouldn’t be able to split lanes on a cruiser. Even though I’ve seen people do it. That’s a big risk.
I'm a M109r rider.
Bought the bike because everyone had Harley's ( Before I learned MC history). However a little trail braking drops it right into the turn
Harley scoring over a Japanese bike in Performance, refinement and handling departments is quite a surprise!
Thirty less horsepower is a significant disparity.
On paper, or on a sportsbike, less so between these two bikes I would say. I don't think that many people would be noticing that as a difference between the two machines.
Something else needs mentioned, the 109 MSRP is about 15k but around here you can get new last yrs model for about 12k, don't know the fxdr, but the Harley Standard(w/107) is 13.6k, Street Bob 14.6k.....and as mentioned in video you need some long arms to actually fit the 109
I would certainly get the Standard before the 109 at 12k
I’ve owned a Yamaha Road star Warrior for years…The only bike I’d ever consider replacing it with would be a Harley FXDR..but I’d still keep the Warrior just in case I was disappointed.
Good plan, nothing worse than upgrading and then regretting it!
'07 109R, I am only 160 lbs and had the same problem on road and speed bumps but if get a spanning wrench and reduce the tension on the shock it goes away.
Will have to remember that if I test one of these again!
Id love to see you revisit this after you sort your stock tune issue with a tre or whatever route you choose to remedy. Given the majority vote claim is that it turns the 109 into a completely different beast.
Just had the bike on test, so didn't have the opportunity to do that, but that certainly seems to be the common consensus!
I have 06 and I still luv it put a 21 up front and it never jump out of gear
Seems like a few little tweaks really fix all the issues mentioned, at almost no cost.
Dont forget about the C109r. I have a 08 and its still a great bike and fast.
M109R the best
Would have liked a comparo of the M vs C109.. that back tire cost & handling for me is an issue.. M90 vs M109 would be a great head to head as well
I would never buy that harley. The M109R is half the price and a better bike. Once again Harley’s are always overpriced for nothing.
@Freedom 2.O underpowered? You’re an idiot if you think that’s an accurate assessment.
Guess we found the bloke who spent $40k on an FXDR👆👆
Harley is for sure overpriced. It's unbelievable how much margin there is. Harley imports parts from 9 countries. If you think your new Harley is "all American" you better research. I have a 19 BOSS M109R and I ride with my friend on his 18 Breakout we have almost the same mileage and his bike already needs fork seals and had a timing issue. 0 issues with my 109.
@@MrNismopro damn dude i planning to go for breakout but i read your comment and make me considered it again

Thank you, did enjoy video, I’ve been wondering who or when someone was going to compare the M109R with the more modern bikes out now! Very informative, keep up the good work!
Thanks, glad you enjoyed the video!
I don't know about the fxdr, other than "that's not me", however if you're wanting a bike to keep then get the fxdr, if you want to change bikes every other year(and you're not particular about sticking to one brand) then get the 109......the less you pay the higher % you'll get back selling in 5 yrs or less, if you keep a bike 10yrs you'll get way higher % back with a Harley
I have bought new 19 M90 and C90T, and a 07 Wide Glide, yes the Suzuki's cost less, but they have a whole lotta cheap in them.
Moore Mafia flash the ECU and that snatchy spot in the throttle disappears and more hp appear, they've just dropped a vid on it
I'll check it out!
Harley FXDR all day , no comparison
Did you adjust the suspension for your weight and riding applications?
if your looking for power the m109r blows the Harley away. over a 100 horses vs 90 horses. again it depends what you the consumer is looking for.
True, I'd think the torque would be the bigger factor here being cruisers, but it will very much vary rider to rider on what they are after. More horsepower for less cost is going to be very attractive to some riders!
The price for the Harley unjust. Paying for a bike that is no way in the same category as the M109R. HD waste of money
@@MrHarlemknight73 They never talk about the reliability of the 109. I have a 2006 and it still runs strong. That Harley is probably going to require more maintenance.
Nice riview
Well explained - thank you
I love the originality of HD's, but God bless Japan for building ever lasting machines that are built to be abused AND accessible to everyone 's wallets. That's why they sell more. Time to learn HD
Yep, they do a great job offering alternatives, especially for value! The more people able to ride at the end of the day, the better.
Lucky for me I'm 6ft2" 88kg and can handle the m109r easily, yes they have there little issues but overall they're awesome, as for the rear end bucking around I think s bit more weight might be needed...
Yep, that can definitely be the case and just comes down to the rider. I'm probably a little light for the stock setup.
Here is my opinion, m109r is just first try from suzuki, if they perfected it and build another model of that capacity, it could rival Harley that has been making large bikes for decades, give Suzuki time, they will get there,
100%
Can you please explain hunting at low RPM my understanding of this term is regarding automatic transmissions this is a manual bike 🤔
That's transmission or gear hunting, as opposed to engine hunting, where you get erratic rpm at idle or with a steady throttle, which can cause surging.
Cheers for the umpire mate I did a little bit of research myself and found that a good Dyno Tune can fix the hunting at low RPM
@@Response1980 Yep seems easily fixable!
@Moto Journo Kris supposed to say cheers for the update I don't know why my phone wrote umpire 🤣🤣🤣
M109R for the win.
How you gonna compare a bike with a liquid cooled high performance engine (M109R) to a bike that's got an air cooled pushrod cruiser engine that can't get out of its own way (FXDR 114)? Lol
What do you expect from the same guys that designed the Hayabusa
So the fxdr wins in everything except price......and if you'd gone with fxdr it wouldn't be popping out of first when down shifting, and in the unlikely that it did, you wouldn't have the dealership telling you that's normal.
Yeah that Harley is nice, until you hit 15k and you have to replace motor mounts and start getting motor leaks. That’s where you reevaluate your decisions... but nice review budd 👍
Wow, what an 80s comment.
You are saying HARLEY has a smoother engine compared to Japanese bike. Is that a compliment to Harley? Harley should be in shame now for producing a smoother engine than Japanese.
These arent hyper cruisers. These are power cruisers.
Not sure I know the difference, would something like the Diavel be a hyper cruiser, or is that reserved for custom bikes with crazy power and power (like turbos and similar).
Moto Journo Kris Officially, there is no such thing....maybe the new Triumph Rocket 3.
Just tune the ECU on the 109 and you're good.
Yep that seems the common consensus!
The X Diavel, every time over both of Them ?
I nearly bought a M 109 ,but Couldn't because the bloody thing would 't go around the corner, just wanted to go out in the paddock & straight ahead ! However, do Love them, great looking Bike, beautiful Engine with much to offer to the Right Person ? Oh, by the way, the bike I rode had a 260 back Tyre fitted, so just emphasised even more why it would 't track around Corners ?I would like to ride a M90,with 200 rear Tyre to see the difference between the two ? I like U only Short Who has had Quad Ruple Heart Operation just Recently, but ridden bikes all my Life! Nearly Every Ducati made, Loved them all, and never, ever in all my riding been left let down by Them ? I Now own a M50 2013,with 9000 km with dual and Single Seat + Rear Seat Cowl, great bike, but would Love to Try an M 90 Boulevard ?
Thank U, nice Review with good content and Comment ! Appreciated this very much, Cheers !
The Diavel is amazing too, I haven't had a chance to ride one in a number of years, but it certainly left an impression!
Maintenance???! One word
Harley FXDR All Day All the Time man , there is no comparison here
What do you mean by "hunting"?
Hunting is when you're holding a steady throttle but the bike revs are rising and falling.
The engine on that harley is a dinosaur still air cooled and not overhead cam
Excuse me it appears you have The "White" edition..
Haha, it is a bit of a strange name with that in mind!
110 lbs heaver than a HD 114"?!
Why, how is that even possible?
not even close, HD is POS
plus the Boulevard looks great and you won't mistake it with anything
this is not even a contest
I would buy HD for his ABS
If you want a muscle cruiser get a Triumph Rocket 3, it will blow up either of these.
Those new Rockets do look insane!
You’re comparing a Nissan to a Cadillac🙄
California Husker...it’s the best sport cruiser on the planet
California Husker...yours is the cvo street glide or road glide?
Get m109r if you get the harley you're gonna be disappointed
M109R
What do you mean “hunting”
Hunting is when you're holding a steady throttle and the revs are fluctuating.
@@troydavenport5638 I bet! That's impressive on such a big bike!
What in the blue hell is a kilo?
John Pierman 1000grams
😆 lol
Video doesn't do it justice as far as sound goes
Yea I really struggle to properly capture the exhausts/running sounds accurately, even with three different recording devices now. Can sometimes get something decent but it never does the bikes full justice.
The stock FXDR is nothing compared to an M109r in terms of power.. Ive ridden them both
What is it with these two wheeled tractors they badge as Harley Davidson's they are absolute overpriced shite BUT people still buy them over Japanese quality machinery
109 will eat the Harley in any condition
Quit smacking when you talk. Lol. Cool bike.
WHY WOULD I SPEND DOUBLE THE PRICE FOR A SUBPAR BIKE. NO SENSE!!!
Wym? The M109R isnt that pricey😉
Harley is over priced and overrated for a bike that’s no longer made in the USA. I’ll stick with my Star Raider. I looked at the Harley’s and asked to test ride one. I was told that if I needed to test drive a Harley I didn’t need one.
Definitely not the kind of experience you want heading into a dealership, when you're considering buying a bike!
How you can compare a bad quality Harley with the m109r. The Harley is like riding a donkey, Harley Technik is old fashion designed and I deserves not to be mentioned as a modern bike
Neither one of those bikes are made for turns all the track they're made for a straight line that's why you had a big fat tire 🤣😂😥👎
