Harley-Davidson FXDR 114 vs. Harley-Davidson Fat Bob 114 vs. Ducati Diavel 1260 S

  • Three power cruisers, each with their own style, go head to head. Will the Harley-Davidson FXDR 114, H-D Fat Bob 114, or Ducati Diavel 1260 S take the win in this shootout.
Cruisers generally don’t need to change much to sell. In fact, models that offer classic silhouettes tend to outsell progressive designs-regardless of performance. And while traditional bikes remain the bread and butter of the cruiser world, in an effort to attract new riders to the segment and to sell more machines, makers push designs in new ways.
These three motorcycles-the Harley-Davidson Fat Bob 114, Harley-Davidson FXDR 114, and Ducati's Diavel 1260 S-are here to shove a piece of cruiser market into a new era. These three bikes sit atop the evolving genre as the fastest, most aggressive cruisers out there. And the faster and more aggressive they get, the less they tend to look like traditional cruisers. In fact, this comparison could be called the shootout of weird headlights. We've come a long way from a 7-inch round sealed beam…
But the overall designs are just symbolic of another broader departure. Most traditional American-style motorcycles still replicate the design language introduced by the Harley-Davidson Knucklehead in 1936, and this silhouette typically hasn't represented all-around hot-rod performance. So when manufacturers want to stretch the category and attract new buyers who might be thinking of transitioning from another sportier category, they try to do something different.
We were big fans of the 2018 Fat Bob 114 because it offered seemingly impossible dynamics from this chunky-tired chassis and big-bore engine. It was such a fun "cruiser," and pushed the styling boundaries so hard, we picked it as Cycle World's Best Cruiser of 2018. This year, Harley-Davidson again forged ahead with the FXDR 114, delivering burly drag-racing-inspired styling to the mix but still on the Softail platform. The Ducati Diavel is also a previous Ten Best Bikes winner in the cruiser category for bringing an Italian superbike ethic to an American-style bike, though no one would ever mistake the Diavel 1260 S for anything but a Ducati.
To test these machines, three of us rode Southern California’s roads from our Orange County headquarters to the California historical landmark of Julian, a quaint town with a long history of serving exceptional apple pie at roughly 4,200 feet of elevation. This route meant that straight highways led to long, meandering turns as we neared our destination, and the final sprint up the mountain contained nothing but tight corners as we rocketed up in elevation. Through fast and slow, straight and twisty, we used Bluetooth comms to talk with each other in our helmets, comparing and evaluating the bikes as we rode.
Southbound on California's main motor artery that is Interstate 5, all three bikes chugged along at an effortless and relaxed 75 mph. With us twisting the throttle to pass cars at speed, seat-of-the-pants feeling had the Fat Bob responding a little more quickly than the FXDR, but the Ducati easily left both Harleys in the dust. Ducati's superbike heritage explodes from the liquid-cooled 1260 S engine, despite its "cruiser" role, while Harley-Davidson's air-cooled "big blocks" are high-performance versions of a purely American kind of motorcycle powerplant.
The Harley-Davidson models are both equipped with 114ci Milwaukee-Eight engines-the largest available in the Softail lineup. These 1,868cc, air-cooled, four-valves-per-cylinder, 45-degree V-twin engines brought the Softail lineup into a new era (along with all-new chassis), but still offer that big-flywheel, torque-intensive character Americans love above all other large-displacement motorcycle engines. And while you might expect these two V-twins with identical displacement and gearing to offer identical performance, they exhibited different characteristics on the road as well as on the Cycle World dyno. The Fat Bob made 82.3 hp and 111.39 pound-feet of torque, while the FXDR was about 3 hp and 4 pound-feet down on those peak numbers, due, Harley-Davidson said, to normal production variation.
Out in the real world, seat-of-the-pants feeling also gave the nod to the Fat Bob, which felt like it launched off the line a little quicker than the FXDR, a somewhat unexpected outcome considering the drag inspiration of the latter and its 240mm rear tire. Winding up to the top of the revs, the FXDR also vibrated more than the Fat Bob, leaving us favoring the Fat Bob in both high and low rpm. The Ducati meanwhile was in a world of its own.

I have ridden Harleys for quite a few years and enjoyed each of them. About two years ago I considered the new fatbob.....even went for a test ride. I was quite impressed with the bike. BUT then I went out of curiosity to our local Ducati dealer and test rode the XDiavel. Oh man, what a machine!! And what a looker!! Looks like something batman should own. Needles to say, I have my XDiavel now for 2 years and has done long distance riding (touring) as well. Still love every moment on it and never regret my choice. I love Harleys, and always will, BUT I believe they are overpriced. You get way more bang for your buck with the Ducati. Just my opinion.

The prices doenst make sense. Ducati uses more sophisticated materials, Harley uses very simples stuff. But i still chose Fat Boy (not Fat Bob) over sportbikes because of reability n fuel efficiency (the maximum torque comes at 2800 rpm on the Fat Boy i think).

I agree. I also have a Fat Bob. I can't get past the ugly aesthetics of the Diavel. I know some people like it but I think it looks like a confused "doesn't know what it wants to be" bike. I'm not sure what sort of rider it would appeal to. imo It's too big and cumbersome for sports/naked riders and too naked/sporty looking for your typical cruiser rider.

I test rode the XDiavel and the VMax before I got the Fat Bob. Honestly, XDiavel is just a sport bike dressed up as a cruiser, and the 1260 even more so. I’d just get the Streetfighter if that’s what I was aiming for. VMax is fun in the straight, but just not much else.
The Fat Bob is just a hoot to ride. Enough lean angle, brakes and shock to have fun, but still just be able to cruise if you want. To be fair, you don’t have to do that with an HD either. I have a stock dyna street bob aside from T bars and slip on’s and it’s fun as hell to me as is. Would I like more power? Sure, but mostly because it becomes a competition amongst other HD riders not sport bikes. We know that a big air cooled v twin on a HEAVY (albeit well-built) frame cannot compete with engines that rev way higher on bikes that are 200 pounds lighter. I personally get much more enjoyment and fun on my dyna than my MT07. Also, people buy HDs with the intention to customize them. That’s not a drawback, that’s part of the experience; to make it unique to you.

It's crazy how worlds apart the Diavel is. I think power is the biggest factor and second is weight and handling. To compare the power would be like the HDs having 100cc's and the Diavel being a 1000cc, it's truly that big of a difference not to mention the characteristics between the two power plants which alone is not comparable. As you said, it is a super bike motor in a "cruiser" chassis. The Diavel literally feels half the weight of these HDs too and loves to corner and is quite flickable off center. When you ride the Diavel, thoughts of "sport bike" sometimes even enter your mind which would never happen on one of these HD's. The HD's are fun in their own ways and respects but the Diavel is in a whole different league of its own. Almost incomparable in almost all ways aside from having two wheels and still being classified as a "cruiser."

The thing that's really hard to quantify in a review is how HD owners make each bike their own with the near infinite amount of aftermarket accessories on offer - you just don't see two alike and it's YOUR bike.
I love the spannering & modifying side of things almost as much as riding - it's a huge part of bike ownership for me, and while I'm happy to throw a new cam or bigger jugs in a Milwaukee 8, there's no way on earth 99% of home mechanics (and most general moto garages) are digging into a complex desmodronic short stroke or changing anything on the bike beyond basic bolt on replacements.
Accurate review for 'factory standard' though, nice work.

So many people crap on the FXDR, but as someone else pointed out, I'm not getting this bike to race everybody else out on the road and prove how much of a bad a** I am. I want an already mean looking machine and to customize it and make it mine and to enjoy riding.

The Fat Bob is a great bike but the forward pegs did not work well for longer rides. The Ducati looks like the clear winner here. The Fat Bob with mid controls would be my choice.

I think this was one of the most fair comparisons I have seen. But as a former Fatbob 114 owner, there are a few things I want to add.
    1. I changed my tires to Dunlop Elite 3. Made a big difference in the handling. Stock sizes
    2. Did a Stage 1 tune and changed out that Mufflers to Rineharts. Stock headers.
    3. After changing the tires, I felt safe enough to get rid of the speed limiter. The bike will so 150 easy.....tested in Mexico.......
    4. Adjusted the throttle response.
Not a big investment to get that extra 20% of performance(H-D chokes their bikes for emissions). The Ducati is a better top end bike. But I would not buy a Ducati. The Harley may cost more initially, but you will wind up paying more to maintain the Ducati in the long run. Especially if you log the heavy miles.
The FXDR is a cool bike but useless at the same time. At least I can outfit the Fatbob for a passenger and some luggage. The FXDR is just a Bar hopper/Drag bike. For much less, you could get a VMAX, or a Rocket 3.

Indeed, the comparison is between a disguised sport bike and two true cruisers. What's wrong is not the numbers in papers, but the mentality, specifically thinking that every bike must have all infinite power and able to let the rider scrap their skull in any corner, otherwise is not worth riding. That's the real issue today in the motorcycle world. There is more than a GP bike or mentality.
Comparing a disguised sport bike to a cruiser is like comparing a jet fighter to a helicopter and the mistake lies in believing the jet fighter is better because it's way faster.
Getting rid off the racing mentality would be healthy in motorcycling.

I can say that the fat bob was fun on twisty country roads due to its torque and short rake not a hard feat to reach however it lacks the tech that my new bike has that makes it soooo much better. Harley step up your game start signing deals with ohlins, Brembo, and make a liquid Cooled vtwin that pushes over 100hp out of the box without dumping a bank full of money 💰 in it so you don’t get demolished by the competition. Thanks for the vid. Interesting comparison, not sure these bikes compete as they attract different markets. I’ve been & I am a Harley rider, specifically prefer mine for touring, but I’ve always had to spend extra $$ to tune, exhaust & cam them to open them up; I understand reviewers frustration since they are detuned & not ready to roll stock. It’s one of those things, if you can afford it & like the soul of HD do it, if it needs to be explained or your buying for practicality I wouldn’t recommend. I’m not a purist however, love the stats & ride of the Ducati, poor thing is just so ugly. If I went Ducati would probably go Monster 1200S, realize it’s more aggressive but what a beauty & Diavel isn’t really a cruiser. Pure practicality you go Diavel ever time, but that’s not why you by bikes, they’re toys. The market agrees, I’ve seen several new 2018 & some 2017 new Diavels still available in Q3 2019 at the dealers. In a perfect world I would take both Ducati & Fat Bob; FXDR is a flop: poor riding position, sub par performance, etc., doesn’t do anything well. My tuned M8 Road Glide is as fast

And for me the HD dealers are 100 metres further down the road than Ducati. So I guess I'd pop in there and buy a... Monster 821. Then again, the Triumph dealer is halfway...

@@svrls7 I can. In no particular order and not all of them fixed under warranty:
      Faulty fuel cap
      Battery drain overnight
      Condensation in clocks
      Faulty voltage regulator
      Faulty pre-load adjuster
      Faulty pre-load adjuster...Again
Paint stripping off bottom of forks
      Paint stripping off voltage regulator.
Lots of minor niggles like speedo housing not straight, handle bars wonky., thin paint with no primer, etc.
All of these issues were in less than 4500 miles. The general built quality of it is absolutely shocking, far worse than any bike I've owned before. (There have been many, including Italians!) But what came as a real shock was how poor Harley Davidson's customer service is and my local dealership are a joke.
That being said, it's the best H-D I've ridden and I do enjoy it but it's now on it's last chance as I'm not convinced I'd like to own it outside of warranty (For what the warranty is worth).

@@svrls7 From what I hear I don't think it's specific to just my bike. You pays your money, Mate. If you think that that is acceptable for a new vehicle then you'll be happy enough.

I test rode the Diavel X. Having rode super bike upto 2009, then purchased a Dyna Wideglide which I still have to this day.
Unquestionably it performs better in almost every aspect vs my 10 year old bike. But it still left me numb and more certain this was not the bike for me.
Harley’s just deliver like 10 times more on the emotion and experience of riding a bike.
After all, if the performance was all that mattered we would probably all be riding the same bikes.

Yes you should of used the XDiavel so all the bikes had forwards on them cause you both seem to be mids fans so it would of seem more of a level playing field. I am a Harley fan but I do also like the Diavel and XDiavel and if I was rich I would def own both.

I agree for the most part i do feel like the Ducati is almost unfair to compare it to looks a little to sports bike to me to be a cruiser and both it and the v-max are in a class of thier own. This is almost like comparing a Ferrari to some big block muscle cars. If HD want to stand a chance with bikes like those they have to stop thier here is a bike but if you want it to preform you need to by ore stage kits. The 114 should my 1 hp per cub minimum not 90 hp and the sad part is it can easily do it but HD decide to save that for a stage kit. Just some rants from a FXDR owner and yes i do love my bike and would buy it again.

As a Diavel owner I could se myself on a fatbob in the future but Im only 52 and still needs power. Last year I had a MT10 and the Diavel is more fun riding legaly. The L Twin 1260 motor is so much fun and even faster than the MT10 upp to 150 km/h.

None of those Bikes are what I would call a "Traditional" Cruiser. But, perhaps "Performance" Cruisers would be a better title... The real HD Big Block Softail Cruisers, to me, are the bottom three of the Softail line-up (the Street Bob, Low-Rider, and Softail Slim). Ducati makes high performance motorcycles; they don't make Cruisers, in my opinion. They should be in the "Naked" Bike Category and not the Cruiser Category; that's my opinion. Peace, Stiletto :-)

It should have been Duc XDiavel instead of Duc Diavel in this comparo (agree it is
borderline streetfighter & cruiser). And next year you can include the new Triumph Rocket III as well. Now when will Indian join the Power Cruiser bandwagon?...

The fat Bob is their performance soft tail. Surprised it did not have performance style tire. Harley now offers mid controls which should be on the bike from the factory as a performance bike. Glad Harley making bikes that can turn vs just straightways. GM took such a long time making their cars handle and they were afraid of turns a couple decades ago.

Comparison is not even close. They made it seem closer than it even was. Ducati Diaval is hands down much much better than any Harley.

Just sold my 14 CVO Road King that I poured money into; made 140 HP and 145 ft/bs of torque. Looking hard at a Diavel or a Monster. Both HD and Ducati have an aroura about them, just in different ways. I am even considering an Aprilia Tuono as well, I am not brand loyal; just looking for a good time!
