I actually think the base model is the way to go (and just replace the SSD with a 2TB one), because the upgrades are horrendously expensive, and you don't get anything else - no OLED screen, no better CPU (beyond the basic Elite), the same graphics performance, etc. Here in Europe it's especially crazy - the 32GB model costs 2500 euros, basically 1000 euros more than the base 15 inch model. This is essentially a first gen product (the first usable ARM-based Windows laptop), with some compatibility compromises and limited graphical power, so probably it will make a lot of sense to switch to a newer generation anyway.
I tend to agree on getting the base model. Most devices I own are base models as they're usually more than enough for daily use. I still think though if someone was investing in this for a video editing machine to last them a number of years, a Ram upgrade could be worth it as they can't upgrade RAM after

Thanks for this review - I have seen others either not talk about video editing or say the Snapdragon computers don't do a good job on it so pleased to see this is not always the case - given the geekbench scores and other benchmarks there didn't seem to be a reason to me other than software why this wouldn't work. One question though, was the battery life still good when you threw lots of video editing at it (say a few hours in 1 day) at it? That was something else I have heard (the snapdragons have good battery life on simple easy tasks but NOT much better when running a harder workload).
I use a surface laptop 2 as a Data scientist. My workload requires a lot of ram using a remote database, and several visualization and analytical tools simultaneously. Should i upgrade to a laptop 7 or to something else?
16GB is fine. No need to get 32GB on a X elite chip TBH. If you're the type of user who needs that much RAM I would still get an intel or AMD CPU or a MacBook TBH.
Agree, for majority of people the 16GB would be more than enough but I do think if someone wants the Surface Laptop and is pushing it with heavier workloads, I would recommend additional RAM now if they can. What do you use?
Hey @@elliekim6666 I actually noticed the reverse where the RAM was almost maxed out but the rest of the system had more to give. That is specific to when I was video editing though, I can't really comment on other taxing workloads as nothing else I did when testing it seemed to max it out. Maybe we'll see better optimization on these chips RAM consumption though the longer they're in market
I have the surface pro 11 with 32GB and that RAM gets chewed up quick if using Google Chrome but I usually use Brave and RAM seat around 20GB with lots of tabs open, excel, RUclips music playing in the background. Fan would kick in once in a blue moon. All in all pretty happy with it. But I have to know how the surface laptop 7 with 64GB of RAM runs so I ordered one. 🤞
i have the new surface and like it...Tho, i can't get 5520x1440 display resolution on the connected monitor. DO you know how to customize or allow for that resolution? it has Snapdragon adapter
In the future, please use PC Mark 10's battery test. Standardized tests are the only way to compare battery life across different laptop brands and models.

Thats the same spec i will be getting to upgrade my current SL 3, hey mate can you also test some office apps that you use on a daily basis.
I've run office on it all week including Power BI desktop and it's been flawless! If you're upgrading from a SL3 this will be a huge upgrade

@@AldoJames the GPU will bottleneck it before or the emulation tax will before ram would become an issue IMHO for this Gen of chips
