Hayley Williams: Tiny Desk (Home) Concert

- The Tiny Desk is working from home for the foreseeable future. Introducing NPR Music's Tiny Desk (home) concerts, bringing you performances from across the country and the world. It's the same spirit - stripped-down sets, an intimate setting - just a different space.
Dec. 9, 2020 | Lars Gotrich -- "I've never done this without Paramore," Hayley Williams announces during her Tiny Desk (home) concert. For the first time in months, she's joined by a band, including friends and Tiny Desk alumnae Julien Baker and Becca Mancari. And from the moment the camera pans out of a literal tiny desk diorama, a jolt of energy leaps from Williams.
Petals for Armor is a soul-cleansing exhale from years of holding her breath. Originally released in a series of EPs, her solo debut sings through heartache in a tangle of triumph and hard-earned wisdom. It's a pop album that knows sadness can simmer, but also shout over an ever-shifting sonic palette. During the pandemic and protests, Williams has played these songs from her couch with muted restraint, and self-serenaded with acoustic covers - sad songs really can be sympathetic companions during dark days.
But in her home, surrounded by blank canvases, Williams and friends splash a bottled-up energy. The joy is infectious, as "Pure Love" bursts from first bloom, "Taken" shows off Baker's jazzy-funk licks and Williams leans into the "Dead Horse" kiss-off with gleeful abandon.

Hayley Williams aka Paramore’s biggest fan.
She is the biggest paramore fan!!!!
@@leticiaschmitt1266 If by "Paramore" you mean herself, then yeah. She kicked everyone else out of the band. Paramore is just her solo now.

The more you comment, more we know that you know nothing about the band.
the absolute energy of julien baker simply vibing out on a shelf
I came here for julien, was not disappointed.
This woman is incredibly underrated. In my opinion she is one of the most talented female vocalists of our lifetime. Her range, tone and intensity is made up of pure perfection. I have loved her since 2007.
I think she is the best. Hands down.
🥲
100% agree
She’s definitely incredibly talented, and doesn’t have to be called a female vocalist, but a talented vocalist. But if we stick to the topic of female, she’s def up there with Evanescence and Chelsea Wolfe!
She is , but it's lowkey by choice. She's had so many people request her to be their chorus but she says no because she just loves Paramore. I think that makes hayley so much better
I know she's been popular for over a decade but she's hella underrated.

@@lemniscatefortunecanfinall2707 lol ok have a nice day.
I think she’s rated right where she should be

Julien Baker just chilling in the back, being an absolute hero.
That whole first song I’m sitting here, “Why does that guitarist look exactly like Julien Baker?” Turns out the explanation was simple.
came here to comment this, but you have beat me to it and i accept that defeat
just casually introduces Julien Baker... yes! wasn't expecting that
Hello, I came back just to say thank you for introducing me to Julien Baker
Ditto all the above, except I didn't know she was that great a player. Way understated, but she held up a significant portion of every tune here.
How is Julien Baker just kickin it in the back ground! Hayley, with this group, is everything.
Hayley and Julien in the same room is gold.
hayley williams AND julien baker. at the same tiny desk performance. is this heaven?
If ever Julien joins her concert I hope Juliens shreds her guitar! ⚡🎸😎
... and Becca. :)
Becca is in a group with Brittany Howard, and towards the end Hayley is playing a guitar created by Annie Clark, which i believe was a gift to her :) i love the community of musicians
Oh I didn't even notice her until you said that! She's there in the back! :O
@@stevem4729 Gotta say, Hayley’s guitar doesn't look like the St. Vincent signature. it's close, but it's not the same model.
She knows we can’t handle Crytsal Clear yet
i'm definitely not ready for this moment
My favorite song from the album!
but she knew what she was doin' starting off w/ pure love...
AYE 😂
Just what I was thinking
Everyone always compliments her voice, can we just take a second to appreciate that she's been writing consistently great music for the better part of two decades now? and she is just never stuck, she'll explore different genres and styles and keep coming up with great music out of those experiments.
her solo albums writing is fairly lack luster, they're not exactly memorable albums. She's a great wrist though.
Absolutely!!!
2024 here, and I'm still vibing with them. Who else?

Ι love the fact that she sings like she's in her living room with friends, randomly jamming, having fun, without the studio vocals and the concert concept, not even caring if she will sound alright, just jamming..
This is actually the attic bedroom that’s in her house, I think! I see it on her Instagram stories sometimes :)
@@BrianAddison94 LOL
Yeah man! It’s sooo good! Though have to say...She doesn’t need to care ‘if’ she’ll sound alright. she knows she’ll sound more than alright! I get what ya mean though.. there’s such a care-free fun vibe to this. Love how they’re all just grooving in their zone.

Couldn’t have put it better- it’s the fact they are all so obviously immersed in their music, and connecting with one another through the medium of sound.
The roasting at c*ad at the end of Dead Horse is what I live for
The friendship between Julien Baker and Hayley Williams makes the punk emo teenager inside of me cry happy tears
And phoebe Bridgers who isn't included but I just wanted to express my love for all of these women.
I just need boygenius and Hayley to do another collab. At this rate can we just have a whole record

Heavily agree.
Hayley Williams is my hero. I love the improvisation in Dead Horse, she really told him! Haha. And can we just appreciate the fact that this woman consistently sounds better live than her records? Can we take a minute to appreciate how Becca Mancari caught the mic and balanced it on their arm whilst playing tambourine at 09:31. 10/10 styled their way out of it x
That was great!
it was her professionalism for me.
I was wondering why she had her elbow up like that. I didn't see the mic fall. Makes sense though.
That's called being a professional. Something always goes awry while playing live. Professionals adapt and do it smooth enough where most of the audience doesn't even notice.

Hayley Williams brings the funk?! This is beyond what words can describe. I’m not a fan of Paramore, but this is incredible.

She is the reason I fell in love with Paramore and got me thru heartbreak and love all at the same time.
Petals for Armor and Flowers for Vases are amazing albums all the way through. I was never a fan of Paramore until After Laughter, but her self titled albums are my favorite. Can't wait to hear what she does with Paramore after this if they ever make another album.
