This is the reality not understood or just not discussed by the B1M. Shiny megaprojects are great, but they involve an army of politicians, bureaucrats, lawyers, finance professionals, engineers, environmental professionals, supply chains, and tons of stakeholder groups (communities, advocate groups, etc.). Metros are stupid. You just burry the transit underground, so cars can continue to drive on the surface. Trams/light rail is much better, cheaper, faster to make, can have more stops, and take car lanes away, and makes the transit visible for people, and you can enjoy the view of the city by riding them, unlike the metro.

    • @TheRandCrews
      @TheRandCrews Год назад +9

@@ncard00metros are faster, carries more people, and be more safer due to being detached from cars and other traffic while having its own dedicated right of ways with automatic signalling and new platform screen doors. If you want to take out car lanes so bad with metros, you can always put them in elevated viaducts like newer systems. It’s foolish to say people only recognize transit if they see it, there are thousands of users for the metro and RER system and it has segments being underground as well. There are reasons why Trams/Light Rail work for certain areas and corridors while metros have theirs as well, it just depends on the problem they are trying to fix and how to connect those systems to the greater transit network with good transit user experience.

      @@KyrilPG Yes .!!
      from what I know:
-M4 : extended to the south...automatic trains soon inserted into traffic first empty...If all goes well, first automatic trains with passengers in autumn...100% automatic line at the end of 2023.
-M11: extension for the end of 2023/beginning of 2024 .... tunnel dug, rails being laid, station equipment in progress. The workshop-Rosny section is more advanced and serves as a test base for the equipment.
The Mp14-5 will arrive in the fall at the rate of 2 per month.
-M12 : extended to the north.
-M14 : extension to the south and north ... tunnels dug, rails laid, equipment and development of stations in progress. Opening 2024. Mp14-8 in delivery since October at the rate of 2 per month.
-M15 South : Tunnel finished (35km), rails being laid (9km in an April video) stations being equipped and fitted out. Workshop 1 being finished, Workshop 2 under construction. correspondence between the current lines and the M15 are being finished (some already finished). The St Maur-Cretil station will be several months late (it plunges to 52m deep).
-M15 East : a section under construction as well as the St denis Pleyel station, Hub of the M14-15-16-17. It will be made in one go rather than several pieces one after the other. Which means that when the M14 will open we will be able to see the deserted, but finished, platforms of the M15/16/17.
The next work begins at the start of the school year with the creation of stations and the digging of tunnels. Opening 2026/2028
      -M15 West : nothing before 2023/2024 opening for 2028-2030.
M16 : Tunnels being dug (75% finished) Stations being prepared for laying the rails. Opening 2025/2026
M17 : Tunnels being dug (I would say 40%) the work of the viaduct is coming soon.
The common M16-17 Workshop under construction.
M18 : Tunnel being dug, half finished. The viaduct will soon be started either in June or September. The M18 will probably open in 2026 for the first section.
The first MR3V and MR6V of the M15-16-17 have been seen completed, at the Alstom factory (at least 2 each).
RER E : Tunnel finished, laying of tracks in progress, development and equipment of stations. West section to Nanterre scheduled for 2023, the rest until Mantes is 2024.
CDG Express : still scheduled for 2024 work in progress, tunnel finished, work on tracks and platforms at Gare de l'Est scheduled for September.
In short, things are progressing well.

@@Lodai974 Thank you VERY VERY VERY much !
      A few questions tho.
M11 East extension > I thought it was going to open in the last quarter of 2022, it's been delayed ?
Do you know if "old" existing M11 stations that were / are renovated for the extension are now (or will be) accessible or at least all equipped with escalators from street to platform ? Or better, lifts ?
M15 South > Will Villejuif Gustave Roussy (M14 M15 hub) be like Pleyel : completely finished as soon as M14 South extension opens with M15 platforms simply sitting unused until M15 South also opens ?
M17 > What about Triangle de Gonesse station ? Is it going to be built ? Where and to serve what ?
M18 > I thought parts of the viaduct had already started being built for some time now. I'm pretty sure I've seen a video or two of quite advanced work sites.
Did I dream of it or get confused ?
RER E West > I thought that extension up to La Folie (or was it La Défense) was going to open this year's last quarter. I think I've read something like they'll open Haussmann SL to La Défense first, a little earlier than up to La Folie.
CDG Express > I have no clue where the tracks are laid or where the tunnel goes. Did not know it was that advanced. I have to find maps and building sites.
Where do you get all that information ?
I try to follow the advancement on the "official" websites and RUclips channels of the Grand Paris Express, RATP Group, erc. but it's scattered everywhere, frequently out of date or unclear.
I (try to) maintain a Google Maps layer with all the stations, "ouvrages", maintenance centers, etc. pinned as POIs but it's a complicated work given the hundreds of building sites.
Either by spotting them on sat or street view or by finding maps and lists on official pages.
I'd love to visit a few building sites, but I guess there's no way to get legit access for a visit ?
They should do tours of the whole undertaking, even paying ones, I'm pretty sure they'd be packed !
      Once again, thanks A LOT ! 👍

      M11: yes it is delayed
Yes all old stations are refurbished with tiling.
Some have received escalators and new exits. Elevators I don't know, maybe.
M15 south : yes I think, but a slight delay in opening for this station will take place at the opening of the M14 sud.1 month or two I think.
M17 : not entirely built, it will be a reserved station.
M18 : yes, some pillars were started in March, it seems to me...the big piece must be in progress within the confines of the polytechnic.
RER E :I think early 2023 but nothing is 100% confirmed, it may be earlier. (the original M14 opened in 1998 a month in advance)
For the opening, the defense station (La Moria ^^) has two tracks around a central platform...we have to turn around at La Folie (4 platforms and 8 lanes it seems to me) so we have to both stations are ready.
CDG Exp : the route takes the tracks of the RER B/Transilien K between Paris la chapelle and Mitry Mory, then a tunnel to pass under the tracks of the RER and follow along the LGV.then tunnel (finished) under the runways .
For Paris, the bridge above the door of the chapel has been dismantled (it dated from the end of the 19th century). The section between the Paris North and Paris East routes is under construction.
Question : everything that is RATP is internal for me (friends, myself, and chefs work there).
The rest, info on the internet via instagram or linkedIn or some chefs put photos. The videos of the SGP or the SNCF or the RATP help.
We have on a forum members who are linked to the construction industry and to the projects they have news.
For Maps, too much delay on satellite images, not very useful.
Then I look at the construction sites when I take the RER (especially the CDG Exp).

Apart from certain lines being completely crowded, others like RER line B and D are completely sacrificed (delays everyday, vanishing trains, crowded rush hours ...). Some parts of the paris region trains (RER) network is managed by RATP (which operate all metro lines), and the other by SNCF (the french national railway company), so it makes things even worst some some line. Apart from (some) bad management and old infrastructures, the parisian network for public transportation is pretty incredible, including buses, you can go wherever you want in the Ile-de-France region for cheap.

@The Joker There is a commuter service called Transilien. I don't add it. Like the commuter trains in London, their final stops are in Railway Stations. They don't cross the city. The RER is different.
it's more a mix betwen the London underground and the London overground. Copy/paste the Greater London with its metro lines and the Greater Paris, you will see that the Parisian cover only the downtown, whereas RER, is a regional metro service that enters in Paris and cross it completly.
London copied the idea with its Elisabeth Line.

Grand Paris Express is actually a small part of the project. RER E rapid transit train is being extended and its length doubled, as well as over 50 km of several tramway linesare being built around the city. All the while the old metro network keeps being extended towards the outskirts of the city, adding a dozens or so of kilometres and several stations.

I've been living there on and off, since 1994, and now I'm living in a super-well-known place just next to Paris. Le Grand Paris Express is probably the most amazing development of the century, after the Eole (RER E) and the Line 14 of the subway. In addition to that - between 2003 and 2013 the Ile de France region went from absolutely terrible unpredictable busses without air conditioning to an almost totally predictable public transportation system which is air-conditioned and manages to run well even in the worst suburbs.
I've lived (during my career) in Saint Petersburg Russia, Oslo and Trondheim Norway, Kitakyushu Sapporo and Tokyo Japan, and a few other cities here and there (including London, but we had a car, so I have never taken public transportation in London) , Moscow (which is btw abysmally bad for anyone who's not working from home - and whether you're driving or taking a bus/metro/suburban train), and since I don't drive I had a chance to compare the public transportation systems overal.
Technology and practicality-wise Paris is great and has nothing to be ashamed of, even comparing to Tokyo.

As someone living in the south suburbs of paris, i can tell you one thing that is not mentionned in the video: housing price in the suburbs (where moslty poorer people live, obviously) will go f*cking high so markets etc will get even more expensive than they already are and the suburbs will become unaffordable for most people currently living there, so the problem of poverty will be pushed even further away to be hidden/forgotten instead of actually doing something against that first.

@@user-uw3fi2zg4t Except that most people who live in the suburbs don't own anything. Most people who live there only rent a small flat.

Infrastructure videos are always fascinating and the B1M does an excellent job in making these sort of videos. Great video B1M!

That's an amazing time frame. When the San francisco East Bay bridge was damaged in 1989, it took until 1998 [or later] to have a design. After a few more years of wrangling, piles began driving around 2002. The bridge ...er... Half of the bridge that was replaced, opened in 2013. and went from $2bn to $6.15bn.
Including the emergency lanes, it's 14 lanes wide so it is not a small bridge at all. But still. Eleven years for a 3.5 km span?

I live jist near a future train station of the new metro. They started building 4 years ago and it won't end until 2025, but we are all proud that it's happening and can't wait for it to open

Great video as always. We have a new raiway line being bored in our city from the airport. My Dad works on the project and to bore the 2 tunnels they got the machines and support from Italy. Our project is only $1.6US but is a lot for Perth Australia
