To paraphrase Dom Helder Camara: I feed the poor and they call me a great Christian; I ask why is there poor and they call me a Communist. We need to question what we believe - it's truly the only way to grow.
Yeah - you can give people money for health care via Go Fund Me- but if you want to provide free/affordable health care to all - COMMUNIST! THE WORLD WILL COME CRASHING DOWN!! 😱 The rational disconnect is mind boggling 😣
Yes. It’s so backward, it’s feudalistic. Reminds me of when people were indoctrinated to believe a king ruled by divine right. Doesn’t America exist because of people who rebelled against that? Unfortunately, our founders were mostly wealthy landowners & the idea that rich people were inherently more “noble”, than poor ones, because they could donate lots of $ to the church & afford to be well educated was left in place.
I can't tell if it's because they see the rich guy/ corporation as similar to them (as a provider), or if they're deferential to the rich guy as some sort of guru. Either way seems so out of step with reality it borders on delusion.
@@hks2377 When the Constitutional Convention was going on in Philadelphia, there were workers protesting in the streets for truly universal sufferage and a lot of ideas which are still considered pretty far "left" today. This broke my heart. I'm 57 years old and never lost my idealism. My entire family has turned toward Trumpism and thinks I'm insane. Keep the faith, my friends. You are the next leaders of our nation.✌✊
A large portion of my family won't interact with those of us they consider Socialists. I am angry with Fox News, which has been, to use Right Wing language, grooming it's viewers to be angry and fearful for decades. I am angry with the Democratic Party for trying to appease the Right instead of fighting for progressive ideals. I am angry with Trump for being the sick, easily manipulated, racist, sexist, greedy, Narcissist he is and for spreading his filth throughout society, allowing all of this to be normalized. But, I am more sad than angry because, while we focus endlessly on the monster created by enemies of the American People, who is a very real threat, we are not paying attention to the existential threats of Climate Change, proliferation of AI, and the next pandemic. We have the ability to meet all of those challenges. The question that concerns me is, are we still capable of making the required, collective, commitment?
I’m a disabled atheist queer daughter of a conservative Christian household. I’ve felt alienated my entire life and my family will never understand me, but this gives me hope. Thank you

@@KellyHurley-ww1gm I draw a distinction between relatives and family. Relatives share DNA. Family are those who treat you like family - with love, understanding, forgiveness, tolerance and unconditional acceptance. Oftentimes a person can be both a relative and family to you, but sometimes they are two different people. I cut ties with my super-successful son - my only child - six years ago, but I have a spritual daughter with whom a share a purely spiritual, emotional connection. that is manifested on a daily basis for over 16 years. And I can truthfully state that, to me, my daughter is more my daughter than my son is my son. If this intellectual distinction is helpful in giving people in pain who have been ostracized and victimized by their relatives, please know that it worked for me.
Absolutely heartbreaking Beau. My son is 34. He never grew out of his idealistic stance. I’m finding that with his generation. I am now learning from my son that I “gave up”. And continued to live in a bubble. I’m listening now

I try to do that each time I vote. I am so appalled at how people will vote only for their own interests. We either work together to makes things better or we eventually fall.
That is the problem-you cannot please everyone. Also, voting is a crapshoot. A lot of supposed "reformers" fail to keep their promises, or make things worse.
I can relate to the concerns expressed in that person's letter. I can't even talk about politics with my mom anymore, due to her steady diet of FOX garbage. It's just so, so sad.
I know what that's like. At least half of my family is on a steady diet of Faux News and I can't talk about anything with them anymore without it turning into a shout fest.
I feel for you my brother! It is sad because all of the things fox spills out are so easy to debunked. I hope one day you and your mom can find peace. Life is to short for anyone of us to be divided over politics. The Gop is full of hypocrites and are the total opposite of what there ideology stands for. At least be true to what you believe. But the Doj needs to put all this guys trash out so the people can see how corrupt of a president he was. But even that might still not even do it!
So many people I just do not discuss politics. We have forgotten how to have a difference of opinion and not hate the other. We have forgotten how to debate and come to the best conclusion for all not one or the other. It is so sad, so much potential for greatness and we just bicker about nonsense.
Exact same scenario as me dude. My mom is a FOX loyalist. Words out of Hannity or Tucker's mouth hold more value then any opinion or value I have about these topics. Ive tried everything. Even trying to get her to understand why I think the way I do about these topics is impossible. I feel for that kid because his dad is my mom since Trump. I don't recognize the person she is anymore, certainly not the same person who raised me and it's heartbreaking.
Trump just made my Dads pre-existing biases, that he used to hide or downplay, come out loud and proud on full display. Though that could have been moving to Florida as well.
Same here. I've been grieving the loss of my mom since ~2018 yet she's still here, and COVID took my dad just after Christmas last year. That didn't snap her out of it, so I kinda lost hope.

This is legitimately mind blowing. I'm sitting here listening to my own story read back to me but I didn't write it... Seriously, there is nothing in the letter being read that doesn't describe my situation save for the fact that I feel deep down like my dad knows he's wrong. I'd wager that the story is actually a lot more common than I thought. But that doesn't make it any easier for those of us who are dealing with brainwashed parents. My own mother told me that my vote didn't count. Me, her eldest son. A veteran of the war in Afghanistan of whom she claims to be so proud. I asked her why my vote didn't count. I asked her to convince me. I didn't get upset. I didn't yell at her. I didn't make fun of her. I just wanted her to attempt to convince me. She spouted some broken faux "news" talking points and then suddenly she didn't want to talk about it anymore.

Honestly, the best response for "The 1% should not be taxed because they built this country" when you are talking to working people tends to be: no, you did. And hundreds of thousands of hard workers like you.
Exactly. It always annoys me when people say '[rich famous person] built [thing]' when they _never_ did. Rockefeller didn't build Rockefeller Plaza, hundreds of working class people did. Bill Gates didn't build Microsoft, thousands of programmers did. Jeff Bezos didn't build Amazon, thousands of warehouse workers did. I lost my Dad suddenly a year ago to a massive stroke. Our last interaction was over politics and conspiracy theories and everything mentioned in this video. He threw his hands up and asked the heavens where he went wrong to raise such an idiot child (and meant it). I answered, sincerely, that it was his example of fearlessly giving of himself to strangers, neighbors, and his family that taught me to not be afraid to give of myself. I can't say my father's change was immediate, but was most noticeable when Obama was elected. About a year into his first term, my mother made us promise to not discuss politics, public policy, social issues, etc in her presence as it upset her to see us so angry over ideas and so we kept our peace while she was alive. That lasted until he remarried a super conservative charismatic christian he had gone to school with and almost immediately he began proselytizing, but not about spiritual matters! He would hammer on me about all of the ideals *he* instilled in me about feminism, egalitarianism, etc until we reached a point where he wouldn't even communicate directly with me, even though I would do my very best to avoid any discussions deeper than a mud puddle. At the end of a day, a conservative worker is just a coward. Yup, at the end of the day dad is just mad because his own son is making him realize that he's become a pussy and has lost his balls. Which, in my opinion, it's way WORSE than just having no principles.

A beautiful piece this morning, Beau. At 58, I have been an environmentalist for 50 years. I have lost hope. AND I realize that the awareness of young people begins from a different baseline than my own and that this allows them to still be hopeful and to have something to work for. Losing hope is one thing; failing to support their hope is another.
I am the same age, 1963 baby born at the end of the baby boom. I grew up in a neighborhood populated by people who came home from WWII and built a life. My Dad and his dad before him were steelworkers. I watched that way of life slowly die as industry after industry starting in the late 1970s closed their doors never to return. I watched as things like CEO pay rose 940% since the 1960s and regular workers' pay rose only 40%. I lived in Europe for about 8 years and served in the US military. I took a look at how regular people lived, how did they earn a living, did they go on vacations and had time to spend with loved ones and enjoy life? How was that compared to the middle-class life I lived as a kid. What dawned on me slowly, and this is borne out by study after study, is that people in social democracies are consistently rated as happier than the average American. They work hard just like we do to make stuff and build things and have generally clean air and water and green spaces. People drive cars, shop, take vacations, eat out, etc. All the same, things we like to do, so you have to ask well if they are doing all of that yet seem to be happier while they are doing it then what are they doing? What is happiness really? Is it money or the pursuit of money? If you believe all the marketing in the USA it seems to be the undertone of everything. You can't be happy unless you are doing better than your neighbor with a bigger house or a bigger car in the driveway. Those things are nice but are these things achievable by everyone? At the end of the day is it all about being the richest man in the Graveyard? We have a lot of people making money in this country and chasing the dream, and I wonder are they truly happy? The thing they are calling the great resignation and reset in the post COVID period suggests it's not. I am not making this up. You know a thinking person doesn't just point a finger at Europe and say well over there they pay in excess of 50% of their salaries in taxes and I am against it, it's all socialism and blah blah blah, and that's bad. A better question is ok what does that mean? What do those countries offer their populations so that they consistently rank higher on the happiness scale? What's the secret sauce? if I am going to fork over 50% of my earnings in my life in taxes what am I going to get from that? Well, things like Universal Health Care, Child Care, and liberal maternity leave benefits, early childhood education, decent elder care, better public transportation systems, more broadband saturation, a better road network and power grid than I have seen anywhere, 20 days per year vacation staring out for the average worker and the list goes on and on. People in the Scandanavian countries I have visited seem to exhibit a lot less stress than the average American worker has to endure, they have more job security than the average American worker gets and in just about any measure of worker productivity are just as productive as we are in terms of industrial outputs. So what gives? I am not saying it's a system for everyone. I recognize that there are people that have strong entrepreneurial feelings that believe that if they take a risk they should reap the greater share of rewards and become millionaires. But on balance, there are a lot of people in places like Denmark and Sweden living happy lives and enjoying a lot more benefits than we seem to be getting here. They consistently rank much higher on the surveys measuring the happiness of people in industrialized societies than we do. You have to take the blinders off and ask why? You know I think that we have been sold a great deal of bullshit in our lives from Marketing and Wall Street and Politicians. We are getting to a point in America where this country seems to only work for a few and not everyone and I think that has something to do with people like Trump, who is the furthest thing imaginable from UAW Autoworker working on the line in a factory in Flint Michigan. yet Trump has tapped into a wellspring of grievance out there and my theory is it's a lot about losing our moorings to things like the life we enjoyed as kids. The kind of leave it to Beaver kind of world where Dad went to work, Mom stayed home, and one job supported a family with just a high school education. I think people are sad to see that way of life disappear (there are too many reasons for it one of which is corporate greed) but nonetheless, people seem to be in despair and willing to believe all the false prophets out there with their stupid slogans. I think these people are hopeless because nobody has shown them a way to a better life. MAGA it seems to me is about clinging to the old and wishing it would come back the way it used to be and that is totally unrealistic.

Yes! Millennials & Gen Z have a reputation for being “entitled”. Some of that is typical of every group of younger people. Sometimes they were genuinely spoiled. Sometimes they were sheltered from reality, which is just as common among kids of conservatives as kids of liberals. In many cases though, “entitled” is a mischaracterization. They were raised in a more progressive time & so are less willing to accept things like sexual harassment, homophobia, racial discrimination, etc. They’re objecting to things most of us always knew were wrong. The difference is they weren’t socialized to accept those harmful behaviors as inevitable parts of life. They were taught to stand up to bullies, not just ignore them & they’re applying that lesson, beyond the playground. That’s what many of their parents didn’t anticipate.
Not really. I saw a comment how the fascism must constantly be fought in this country to prevent it from taking over. We're losing the battle by a lot right now
@wolfman02 Yet, the definition of good and bad are not black and white. You can't proclaim that there are 30 genders, but good and bad is binary. As a German green party voter i'm so left, it's of the charts by US standards, but to me, both extremes left and right look pretty much the same. Yes, the left motive is to improve other peoples live (although some just want to take away from others), while the right is motivated by fear that somebody takes something away from them, but at the end, the result is the same. If you are intolerant against 90% of people, even the ones who are on your side, you either force them to agree in a fascist way or you will slow down your progress because you alienate people. Beau recently had a video about the metaphorical spear and the spear head. I would even argue that some kind of conservatism is necessary for balance.

This echoes what my SIL said to my husband about their parents, halfway through Trump’s term. She asked how parents who’d taught their kids such good values, could support a leader who goes against all those values.
…then insist they’ve ALWAYS been “values”. It’s true actually. What they insisted before was the lie. At least those blinders are off. It sucks but at least I don’t have to wade through their crap and parse what they “really mean” anymore. So there’s that.
Teaching your children "good values" can be just another power play. If they taught their children "good values" their parents with more...fluid morals can easily manipulate them. As one side has rules to play by and the other does not.
"The brainwashing of my Dad" is a 2015 documentary that tells the story of one man who once held leftist ideals, who supported union workers on strike, but who gradually, through listening to conservative talk radio and watching Fox, became an angry Trumpite with all that this implies. His daughter (who he lived with) took control of all the TV remotes and through controlling what he was exposed to, gradually brought out the man who he'd once been again. He has now recanted his hard right beliefs and now wonders how he could have ever been fooled into becoming what he once despised. - It's a great film and I wonder if it might be of some help to the sons and daughters who are contacting Beau in desperation.
The problem with the above scenario is that the daughter is just as brainwashed as her father. For her to think that she is somehow less brainwashed is comical. Both the right and left are two sides of the same coin, and are controlled by the large corporations and the Federal Reserve.

The issuing power should be taken from the banks and restored to the people, to whom it properly belongs.” “I sincerely believe that banking establishments are more dangerous than standing armies, and that the principle of spending money to be paid by posterity under the name of funding is but swindling futurity on a large scale.” -Thomas Jefferson to John Taylor, 1816. according to an old friend, who is a chaplain in the army they no longer have to do works. Anyone can get into the pearly gates. You show up on judgement day and say you are sorry and you are in. No good deeds on earth required anymore just remorse at that last second. not the way I was raised but it is the way its being taught now.
@@Beachtrader0007 you’re right about that and it’s a problem. Faith without works is dead. James 2:26. Those works are the fruit (evidence) that God is working in your life that’s what they fail to understand.

My parents are in their mid 80s and very liberal. They lament the fact that their generation took so much and left so little, well, a lot of messes for younger generations to clean up if they can.
That's really awesome! My mother is 87 and became a liberal in the last few years. Mostly a fiscal liberal but still saw the light. We were raised hyper evangelical.
My grandfather is 88, and super liberal. Somehow has Trumper kids. Except my father. My father is not a fan at all. I knew Gramps was pro social policy and watched with pure joy when my cousin heard him trash Trump to his kids and support Bernie at our last family gathering. The patriarch and grandkids come together politically. Such an amazing circle of values.
My dad is in his mid 80's and is also VERY Liberal. Of the six of us that he and my late mother raised we are split down the middle 3 to 3, liberals versus the Trumpies (wish I could call them conservatives, but they are not). Can only carry non political conversations with the Trumpies.
It is 2024 January. This to me was one of the Best presentations ever made by Beau. It popped up randomly this morning. I saw that I "Liked" it then and I wish it could be shared everywhere now. I am about to 60 and am very Grateful for this Channel and you all. Peace
I am 50 and this is exactly how my relationship with my father has gone down hill since Trump. I was a daddy's girl and it has crushed me seeing how brainwashed my father is.
I'm 40, and while I have only be a daddy's girl for about the last decade, I was stunned when he completely shut down and hung up on me simply at what he thought I might say without actually saying anything at all - he feared any opposing opinion, even unspoken, that much.
@@felinecontrolled that's what's so dangerous about this situation. It seems to me that more people than ever before are utterly unwilling to listen to and respect somebody with a different opinion. People want to stay in their own bubble, no matter how toxic it is.
It is not a one size fit all thing at all. I have 60 and 70 year old friends, that got disowned just like I did. I still have not gotten over some things my family have said and done.
Thank you for your service! I too am a former Republican. I did a lot of research on thing they voted on or enacted and was horrified to the point of leaving that party. Now they have morphed into people whose every action is destroying our country. Blessings to you on this upcoming Veteran's Day.
64, former Catholic, abusive parents and I’ve learned that my educated secular friends are light years closer to the philosophies of “Jesus “ than any of them ever were!
I see the same shift to the right in my siblings and many friends. We are all in our 60s and 70s. It is less heartbreaking than it would be in a parent, but it still smacks me upside the head when I realize that I have no idea who these people are now. Some of them used to espouse the Christian ideals of generosity, charity, kindness and now it is all me, me, me. I try telling myself they are afraid, but I can’t understand why. And if I am honest I don’t want to understand. Some of my oldest relationships with people who share my history are ghosts of what they were. People who spent their working lives in health care are antivaxxers and anti maskers. People who I stood beside in environmental protests 50 years ago, are denying or minimalizing climate change. There are days I feel like I am in an episode of the Twilight Zone. It makes me incredibly sad.
My grandfather was a lifelong republican and a real hothead sometimes and quite bigoted other times. Near the end of his life he did change though and most of what he was left with was just the love for his family he never learned how to express very well. I pray your family members have a similar change. Remember: change is the only constant. Hang in there fellow Earthling! ^-^

My dad passed away 10 years ago, I saw the anger and the pain he felt at the world. He ended up deep into infowars and all that. What I saw on January 6th reminded me so strongly of my dad... Absolutely my meditation this morning (it's Sunday morning here where I am) God understanding that we can be hit over the head by 'religion' until we give up.
Conservative parents take niceties as mythology to parrot and not analyze, just make sure the younger people know the sound byte. Us younger folk heard “be a good person” and took it as a quest.

@@yvonneplant9434 The same thing that happened during the mini ice age. Put great stress on a society, and the cream does NOT rise to the top. When you couple the population, economic, and climate crises, you are seeing just the beginning. Hold onto your hat. It’s going to be a bumpy ride.
hey Beau - I think I am going to use this for the first day of my Psychology and Law class. The whole idea of the class is to teach people how to use science to address social issues. Or, it is one of the main points. This is a good place to start with a group of young people. Thank you.
As a Hindu living in this beautiful country, this letter hits home. I don't think it is the religion but how you treat people. Treat others as you want to be treated. My parents have long left this world. My friends are still fighting and still idealists. Every one should be treated with decency. Not treat one as you think they deserve.
Your message is exactly it... A preacher once told me, "Strip away all of the particularities, and boil it down to the basics, and there aren't 10 commandments: there's one commandment. That commandment is to treat people as you wish to be treated. That's the root and crown of all of the commandments, of morality in all the religions of the world. Do that one thing, and be grateful to God - that's all that God asks." Very cool guy, this preacher: spends his life helping people and the community, and has no prejudices in so doing. Anyone who asks for help -no matter their creed, skin color, finances or social status - he helps them. He's housed the homeless in his own home, fed people who couldn't feed themselves, helped people build their houses, pay their rent, find work...the list goes on, forever. And he doesn't seek money, or power, or to convert anyone - he's genuinely curious about how other people see God(s), whether from an atheist, monotheist, or polytheist perspective - and he seems perfectly at peace having images of Jesus, the Dalai Lama, Shiva and the Buddha all hanging out together on his home altar. Meeting him (and a handful of other religious types who walk their talk and live their faith in humble, loving, helpful ways) really shook up my view on religion and religious people, which was entirely caustic and negative up until my mid-twenties. Now I endeavor to be genuinely curious about what people think and believe, and to be open-minded and open-hearted, like I've seen modeled by my preacher friend. Because, at the end of the day, wouldn't I want people to treat me the same way?
You are right. It's not religion behind this hate in America. It's the people behind the religion that is stewing this hate in America. There are a lot of churches, specifically evangelical churches (but plenty of others, as well) that make a lot of money from their congregation. A lot of money. AND they don't pay taxes. Those people aren't using that money for upkeep of their lands and their congregation when it needs help. It's paying for mansions and yachts, etc. They are paying a lot of money to the GOP to make sure they stay relevant, as it appears that they are losing people, and therefore they are losing money.
This was me…my Stepdad’s work ethic and his example as a decent man shaped my Liberal ideas. And it would have frustrated and infuriated him if he’d known.
I read Heinlein's "Stranger in a Strange Land" in my youth, the Baby Boom generation took it to heart as a guide to living like a hippy. Heinlein was shocked that the liberal adults were using concepts from this book to support their liberal leanings. He was shocked because he was very conservative but the ideas in his earlier books showed young people a way of approaching life in a liberal way. It makes me wonder if the parents teaching good ideas to prepare their children for the real world similar to teaching them about Santa Claus, giving a short term fantasy to ease the children into the workings of the world.
Your stepdad was an honorable man with a work ethic. Why don't your compatriots share his work ethic instead of asking for handouts and "free college"?

I often wonder if all these people that are wrapped up in this relationships aren’t incredibly afraid. This man is either GenX or a Boomer with so many changes and economic fragility. Trump p I system on all of his fears. So sad.
That's the sad thing, at least for me, the people who need to improve don't know they have a problem(or they are in denial about it), but they won't let even the idea that they have a problem, or are in the wrong, stand without taking it as a personal attack based in ill intent.

Whatever part of the brain that controls empathy is severely lacking in conservatives. They really have a hard time putting themselves in someone else's shoes. Just look at the torture issue and the only Republican who was against it and why. Look at stem cell research and how they were all against it except Arlen Specter, who had cancer and could benefit from it. They have to learn the hard way and even then it's not a guarantee they'll actually learn from it. They actually think a judge shouldn't have empathy.

Holy cow, I wasn't expecting to get emotional at this, but that letter got me crying. It expresses so much of what I've been feeling myself for the past few years. November 8, 2016 was the day I stopped going to church for good. I felt such a crushing devastation of the soul that day, because it was the day I realized that everything I'd been taught to believe about being a good person was all just empty words to my parents, my fellow Christians, and my fellow Americans. It was the first time I felt true shame and betrayal from my family, my church and my country. I haven't given up on those values they taught me to believe; even if they don't really believe it, I will keep stubbornly hanging on. But I'll never get over the pain of that betrayal, either. I just wish I could make my parents understand.
There are more of “us” reasonable people than there are of “them”. They’re loud. And they have their own media ecosystem they don’t seem capable of critically thinking about (since pretty much every new conspiracy theory contradicts the last), or intellectually curious enough to check up on. It’s been unfortunate to discover HOW.MANY.PEOPLE (about 1/3) have been apparently living in this state where they haven’t been able to be honest about their actual “values”. But at least it’s been laid bare now. So that’s something.
I now belong to "The Church of Holy Roman Kindness," my own church, ex-Catholic, and I've never looked back. There was a grieving period. Give it time.
When you said "because that's what you taught them", I just shouted "exactly!". My dad taught me a lot of things about how to be a good person, the importance of doing things for others and not just for you, etc. So now that he's voting for the people who do the exact opposite, who foster that division rather than a future that's better for everyone, it's hard to reconcile that. We've had multiple fights about this kind of thing, and it's so hard to see someone you used to respect so much and who taught you what has become your core beliefs devolve into someone who seems like a shell of their former self. It really put it into perspective for me when you said that they've just given up and accepted the status quo... Thanks for this video, hopefully one day I can show it to my dad and we can understand each other better.
"Don't Let 'em down. Be better than they are. Fix the world." - your final words are inspiring. Since Trump my in-person social life has been hell. I've been called a communist, a socialist... My "friends" can tell I don't agree with them, and so when I bring up any ideas to try to get them to see a different view point - pin drop (as in you could hear one)... then they change the subject. I don't want to give up, but it's so discouraging - I'm going to try to follow your inspiring final words.
Don’t give up! Believe me when I say you have a LOT of company. This isn’t a sustainable situation. Something has to give-people will get tired of this.
I think you really might want to read about human psychology more if you actually want to fight against these sorts of things. Everyone constantly has a view that people are perfectly rational, that if you just talk to them and explain the evidence, they will change their minds. But it rarely works that way, that's not how a biased mind works. And by the way this is true for people on the left as well. Try looking up how others have convinced Trump supporters. Or read articles on the psychology of how people reason, or why they cling to irrational beliefs, or why Trump supporters believe the election was stolen. Don't just approach it by pure motivational rhetoric; you have to intelligently approach these issues if you want to resolve them.
I can tell why and how you are a conservative, and why you should embrace it loudly and proudly!! American Conservatism is rooted in, and has to begin with “Unbridled Freedoms that do no direct physical or financial harm to others”. Any one that doesn’t, can’t, won’t agree with the above is just a wannabe fascist! The names on the Declaration, and the bill of rights were all progressives, kinda sorta mostly. Progressive in a way that made them throw off the chains of an authoritarian/King as the state leader. Conservative in the way that slows change to stop any pinball effects to our society. The Party of Liars Cheats and Thieves are trying to drag this country backwards and under the thumb of white older men(I is one), disregarding the societal needs of the many cultures that make up the USA and the rest of the American continents, North Central and South!
Words to live by… perhaps don’t bother talking with your friends about it- just live that life. Maybe they will see you example - that may get them thinking. If not, at least you’ve done what you think is right ☺️

People saying the Taliban is taking Afghanistan back to the Stone Age, but what about Texas and other red states? It’s on the way back to the 1600,s. Let’s worry about here in this country.
Exactly! What is happening in TX, and other red states are exactly the same as whats happening in Taliban controlled areas! ... The White Taliban is alive and well in America
Comparing a regime that has committed thousands of atrocities against it's own people, where there is no representation of the people in government is a far cry from Republicans in Texas. If you're talking about in Texas specifically, the people there have voted in republicans and a very obvious point in the majority of republican canadicies and campaigns has been pro-life. Ironically thousands of conservative women voted to take their own human rights to abortion away, the republican party preaches a message of not having big government, anti-mask mandates, vaccine mandates, etc, whilst directly implementing policies like the heartbeat laws that are a tyrannical intrusion into people's own health decisions. The republicans and democrats both are the same authoritarian parties, they just don't admit it. I think it's a rather far stretch to say that restricting the right to abortion is comparable to women in afghanistan who can't even drive a car on the street.
While Texas restricts voting, gerrymanders, restricts women's rights, bans books, ignores public safety, I still see some differences between the state and the Taliban.
That message at the beginning hits hard. I haven't been a Christian for over 20 years, but I still love Jesus. My early childhood education in the teachings of Jesus is the center of my moral universe. I thought Christianity meant emulating him and trying to do our best to continue to bring his love to the world. It became clear to me during confirmation that the adults in my church had forgotten or abandoned or never cared about that to begin with. From then on it was all Old Testament and rote recitation of the rituals to ward off Hell and ensure Heaven. This lead me to some questions that caused me to break with the faith. But I still hold to those first teachings.
@@Hartley_Hare I've been toying with the idea of chillin' with the Unitarian Universalists for a while. If you're really where I'm at maybe look into seeing if there's a UU community around you. You might find the spiritual sustenance you need with them.
I'm a UU. Yes, we're very chill. I once met a guy who was new to the big city and missing a sense of community. I suggested that he might check out the Unitarian Universalist church. He did and I asked him what he thought. He was impressed by all the social action committees that had tables set up after service, during the coffee hour. He said, "Wow. These people don't just sit around praying for things to change." I laughed, "Is that all they do in other churches? Prayer is healing, but it doesn't serve food in shelters or save the rainforests or march for human rights." I went to Catholic elementary school K-8. I became a UU at sixteen.
Exactly. Every day, I strive to live up to Matthew 25. Conservatives either don't know the passage, or do not care, calling themselves exempt from this most difficult of Christ's teachings. I say "Jesus didn't stutter. He didn't make an exemption. Treat the weakest as you would treat Jesus...or you are a goat."
To whoever wrote this letter, My heart breaks for you and I am sending you a hug. I know how frustrating and hopeless it feels, but no matter what you are not alone. ♡ Sincerely, Someone that was disowned by their family because of Trump
I have a really large family. 15 Siblings and 2 parents. Both parents are likely conservative voters, although my moms rhetoric is left. 8 sisters and 7 brothers. 7 of the sisters are on the left and 5 of the brothers are on the right. That makes 10 total on the left and 8 total on the right. Pretty much the same split for the country. The ones on the right are often so much more confrontational about their views, though. It's always "Oh I don't agree with the riots" or "immigration has gotten real bad" or "I think the racism thing has been blown way out of proportion." These are direct quotes from a loving brother of mine that he gave with no context. Almost all of the things the right cares about are just things echoed by their bubble on the news or social media. None of it affects them directly and most of it is just fake conservative outrage.
My daughter feels the same way about her dad…so true. Great job Beau! My daughter and husband fight constantly about politics. My husband is a far right conservative and I’m a Democrat. In our family, we can’t talk politics or war war 3 will erupt. So sad This did not happen until Trump was unfortunately elected.
Nothing against a decent conservative mindset. Good on your dad. Hope those "normal convervatives" find some traction in what's left of the non-cultist-crowd in the gop :/
@@peterpain6625 conservatives vote against scientific progress and religious freedom, they vote against wage increases and instead vote to give money to corporations, they also tend to be very religious, causing them to adopt a very cult-like mindset. I hate to play party politics, but conservativism is inherently bad.
@@butkusfan23 i think you are still thinking about the party, "Conservatism" in its original form was a party for a smaller government, every political idea has its pros and cons, for example a popular conservative saying "Pull yourself up by your boot straps" is the idea that a government will mind its own business and not have social programs but due to not having social programs the government wouldnt take a cut of your money (Taxes). But now with all the corporate lobbying and corruption the Republican party has taken that idea and twisted it. Thats why there are people with a conservative mindset but are not republican
@@gwendolyn2976 conservatives embrace the “pull yourselves up by your bootstraps, even if you have no boots, I don’t care.” Its always been that way. Reagan is a conservative hero, and look at his policies, they are horrific. And smaller government opens the door for businesses and those who are already rich to abuse those below them. Conservative ideas do not work in a large conglomerate of a society like the US.
I don't know what to say. After listening to this 3 or 4 times. I can barely think. I feel like every generation gets beaten into submission, and in the end we just shrug and server out the remaining years of our sentence. Thanks for pointing out that even though I only managed to move the needle just a bit, I succeeded in a way my parents wanted me to.
Great video. I am a 64 year old man and I find my solace in these times with two major things. First I believe this new generation, these new 20 somethings are inspirational to me, they are color blind, they are more accepting of diversity whether sexual, religious or cultural. They believe in justice for everyone. The other thing that helps me is knowing that Progressives always win. It might take months, it might take years and it might take decades, but we always win. Whether it is the abolishment of slavery to women voting, to child labor laws all the way up to gay marriage, we always move forward. Hopefully the speed bumps of progress can be smoothed out by these young people.
This is me with my co-workers! I get called a "bleeding heart liberal" whenever I suggest that we help the poor and the elderly. That we tax the rich to fund social programs for those less fortunate that us. They just say "get a job" to the homeless and that people should be just working 24-7 for 7.25$ and hour and "work their way up". They don't realize that for some that is their life work and not a "stepping stone job". They only care about what they can rake into their own pockets....some wonderful church going folk right there. Spending all day on the computer listening to Ben Shapiro, Steven Crowder, and Fox news and lamenting how the election was "stolen" is just one of their habits. I could go on but it makes me sick. I am just grateful that my family has not been corrupted by the media. I feel for this person 100% but you know what you need to do...and turning your back on the madness allows you to go forward and help others. We are on this earth to help each other and that is what I will do...I hope you do the same.
I was lied to my whole pre-college life that upward mobility was always inevitable for the hard-working. Taking out biases and whatnot, that's logistically impossible anyway. No matter how hard everyone at a McDonald's works, they aren't all just going to get promoted to manager. People need to work the tills and the grills. Management has limited slots. There is no up to trickle unless there are vacancies, and no, working hard won't make them just add a slot for you. But then they'll just snidely retort "then start your own business!" Sure, take that risk at a small local level in the era of Amazon and DoorDash. We're not just screwed by political policy. We are screwed as a culture, unless we can learn not to make corporatism our personalities.
A ton of the rage from the right comes from the realization that other people haven't compromised morality for practicality. Every time you speak against injustice, what they hear is "You're a bad person you gave up."
I had a Christian conservative roommate for four years, and I absolutely identified this behavior. My presence was a constant reminder to him that he had given up, and he hated me for it. He hated me for trying to be a good person because it was a reminder that he wasn't.
This resonates. Midwest ohio is stuck in their own bubble world, my parents included. All I can do as a parent is let my children know that this world is not in a good place, and it's up to us to change it.
I'm fortunate that Cleveland isn't quite as bad as many other places in Ohio. It's still ever-present though. I see Trump flags on the windows of people I have known for years and know, or thought I knew were good people. It's sad.
This so describes my own parents and my relationship with them, I cried all the way through it. Your advice is much needed and perfect. Thank you more than I can say.

Wonder if his dad feels the same way about the enslavement of black people that existed for hundreds of years. "They should be grateful. They were given a home and a purpose". That sounds radical to say, but there are many in this country who believe it, and it follows the same logic of that person's dad.
@@brennam954 Probably not. This is the reason why conservatives hate education. Having to find out how things work and be against THEIR world view. It's the ultimate sin. I know parents who disowned their children simply because they were against Trump. Luckily for me, my Mother was more of an influence than my Father ever was so I turned out good.

That touched my heart. I completely understand where the writer is coming from. My mother is hardly recognizable to me anymore. We had to make a rule that we won't talk about politics in front of each other, but she still manages to say things that have me confused like I never really knew her at all. I find myself spending less and less time with my mother because I don't want to argue with her. I'm 47 and she's almost 70 I don't want to spend what time she has left arguing over morals that she taught me and no longer seems to have.
Good morning, y'all. Love & Light from Mississippi. ✌🏼💚 [the writer of this particular letter took the words straight out of my own mouth/mind/life experience, so I've nothing to add besides HAVE A GOOD WEEKEND, BEAUTIFUL HUMANS.]
I completely understand these people. My parents (Germany) were largely the same. For many decades, voting conservative because "we've always voted conservative and it never did us any harm". They had their mind set in the 1950s when they grew up and never bothered to revise their opinions, because policy never really affected them. Sure, they were complaining when taxes were raised again, but "the other parties aren't going to do anything better anyways". They were violently anti-LGBT until I came out to them. They have always been very technophobic, and I've grown up as a total geek and have by now built a career in IT. Things... weren't always easy between us. Since I was a teen, we mostly lived our lives alongside each other (in the same house), kept interactions friendly but shallow. It took a lot of convincing and begging, until my parents agreed that we need to have a sit-down and talk politics. It took a whole evening, and I went in well prepared, and I explained to them in detail, with newspaper clippings, how the conservative party they supported so much has been caught time and again in corruption scandals, shady backroom deals and parlamentary nepotism. I showed them comparisons with other countries about how the conservative party, through their targeted support for state telecom, had lead to us dropping further and further behind in technology knowhow and internet and all that "modern" stuff. I read them excerpts from the Snowden papers and compared it to our agencies' doings to make it clear to them with which force the conservatives are chipping away on our freedoms. They had heard about it, but it never concerned them because "they had nothing to hide" and "they had nothing to say". "Honest people shouldn't have to care about those issues anyways, this all just concerns the evil people!" they argued. They knew what happened in East Germany, with the mass surveillance and the secret agents and everything, but "this could never happen here in the West". They never realized how far it had already come, because "it never affected them". Nobody told them that they couldn't say a certain thing, because they never spoke publically. They wouldn't have cared if the gov't put a camera in their living room, because "they aren't doing anything illegal anyways". It took so long to finally get them to understand that these rules and limitations that they have been voting for all these decades, are now ruining my career and my freedom and my life, that they've voted to put the current generation in a cage, because "why should they have it better than we had it? we didn't need all those fancy things and rights and freedoms, we were fine." They voted conservative because they wanted things to stay as they were, without even realizing that things could be /better/.. they always thought all alternatives were worse.. and since nobody challenged their views, they didn't either. At the next election, I went through the party programs with them, and explained in detail how the points were affecting my life and how they wouldn't make theirs any worse, and finally got them to vote more socialist instead. Folks, go out there, go to your parents and aunts and uncles and grandparents, and challenge their political views. Explain them how they could make the world better if they voted differently. Explain them how they aren't going to lose anything if they don't put the cross in the conservative box. Make it clear that "not conservative" doesn't mean "worse" but "better". Invest those hours, it'll help us all. Thanks for coming to my TED talk.
Thank you for sharing your story, and I think it would make an excellent Ted talk. Especially in our current political climate. I applaud your efforts in helping your parents see a different way. Best wishes.

The rational disconnect is mind boggling 😣
@John Smith no, you do. Poor people exist because Jesus said they exist? That's objectively funny.
I balked at "we should be grateful to corporations."
That was way too authoritarian for me.
Yes, thank you so much, multibillion dollar corporations, for coming in and killing small businesses and taking far far more than you give! Very cool.
While working two jobs . . . Makes me wonder about his sense of self worth compared to others.
Diana - I used to think like that. Vote for the best for everyone, but no more. I am now more concerned with women's issues and, being 71, seniors.
"The point of being a good parent is to make sure your kids are better than them. In you they succeeded". That's a beautiful way to put it.

Exact same scenario as me dude. My mom is a FOX loyalist. Words out of Hannity or Tucker's mouth hold more value then any opinion or value I have about these topics. Ive tried everything.
That was a brilliant letter. I'm 68 now and unlike this viewers past history with his/her parents, my parents were liberals and we had the same views on most things political or religious. Somehow since Trump came in the scene, my sister became a member of his cult. She insisted on sharing on a daily basis that Trump was sent by God. I asked her several times to stop sending me his propaganda but she didnt listen. Today we are estranged. She just doesn't get it no matter what I say. Now, when she sends me messages or articles she thinks mean something and important, I simply delete without even reading. It's sad how the MAGA has split families like they have.

As a whole, the upcoming generations are increasing intolerant of intolerance. Let's take that as a sign of hope.
Have to be careful with that. Don’t swing too far as to become the thing you are against.
@@margo5919 : Could you explain that please? Because otherwise it involves a whole lot of assumptions and or wanton ignorance on the part of the reader to simply take your comment as being realistic.
The most important thing to not tolerate is intolerance.
If I could lock people out of the "Fox" bubble, it would go a long way in deprogramming them.

@@yvonneplant9434 The same thing that happened during the mini ice age. Put great stress on a society, and the cream does NOT rise to the top. What happened in Germany is the reason Japan and Germany were treated much differently after WWII than they were after WWI. You can see the results of that today.

Do that one thing, and be grateful to God - that's all that God asks."
Very cool guy, this preacher: spends his life helping people and the community, and has no prejudices in so doing.
@@meganroserebecca : Exactly. That is acceptance. Contentment. Peace.
What a wonderful message ❤
Our job here is to help each other. Thank you for your beautiful words.
It's not always easy, but important to remember that we were all born innocent, and no one asks to be brainwashed.

That's the sad thing, at least for me, the people who need to improve don't know they have a problem(or they are in denial about it), but they won't let even the idea that they have a problem, or are in the wrong, stand without taking it as a personal attack based in ill intent.
I thought the same thing. I'd like to send it to then because this is how I feel but I can't because it would let change anything just make things worse

And the job of every generation is to give future generations a better world than they are living in.

Conservatism is fear combined with a lack of empathy.
Exactly this. I never knew how bad the rot was until he came along, how heartless, easily manipulated, overly emotional, and scared everyone truly is. I'm that drop of progressive in a sea of red. My dad, brother, aunt, and a distant uncle are all democratic/progressive, everyone else (friends and family) drank the kool aide, and I've noticed it's only my brother and I that challenge everything, but it always falls on deaf ears. Everyone I looked up to, respected, and admired are just shadows of their former selves. They look the same until they start to speak, then their faces mockingly twist and sneer in ways I couldn't have imagined growing up, yelling about people they've never met or parroting the dog whistle of the day. There is no spell they're under, nothing is going to snap them out of it, I see it all like Invasion of the Body Snatchers and know we have to deal with this for far longer than I would like, guesstimating at least another 20 years.
Not all Americans. I'm called "humanitarian" as if it's an insult! ... Hang in there. You aren't alone. We're still here, still trying, too!
Please don’t give up. We can change the world. I know it in my bones.

I’m not sure we watch the same video…
it's the U.S. not just Texas.
A great man once said if someone accused you of being a Christian…would there be any evidence to convict?” Great piece here Beau!

He was impressed by all the social action committees that had tables set up after service, during the coffee hour. He said, "Wow. These people don't just sit around praying for things to change." I laughed, "Is that all they do in other churches? Prayer is healing, but it doesn't serve food in shelters or save the rainforests or march for human rights."
I went to Catholic elementary school K-8. I became a UU at sixteen.
He nailed it 100%, I feel exactly what he is saying in each and every way.
So cliche but me too
To whoever wrote this letter,
My heart breaks for you and I am sending you a hug. I know how frustrating and hopeless it feels, but no matter what you are not alone. ♡
Sincerely,
Someone that was disowned by their family because of Trump
Your letter is me in a nutshell. A Christian who saw the hypocrisy. My father is a republican as well, but proud to say at least NOT, a trumplican.
Conservativatism as an independent political movement was a colossal mistake.
"He's just upset that everyone else hasn't given up".
That one hurt
Don't give up.
Yeah, this is the line that really hit home for me.
Very much.......
Never too late to change. Never.
Wow. This gives me hope. Stay strong young man. My son is 21 and he’s embracing progressive concepts.
I am in my late 40’s and raised Catholic and over time came to same Conclusions.
Good to hear that there’s a lot of us.
Any billionaires out there that want to fund a news network promoting our ideas?
Great video. I am a 64 year old man and I find my solace in these times with two major things. First I believe this new generation, these new 20 somethings are inspirational to me, they are color blind, they are more accepting of diversity whether sexual, religious or cultural. They believe in justice for everyone. The other thing that helps me is knowing that Progressives always win. It might take months, it might take years and it might take decades, but we always win. Whether it is the abolishment of slavery to women voting, to child labor laws all the way up to gay marriage, we always move forward. Hopefully the speed bumps of progress can be smoothed out by these young people.
i love this
This is me with my co-workers!
Ask them what their thoughts are that $20T of the National Debt is due to GOP administrations.
@@carochio8639 They'd just retort, "Fake news" like they always do. Nothing penetrates.
You made me cry again dude. Well done.
It isn't just giving up: They perceive this as weakness and above all else, they fear appearing weak.
This resonates. Midwest ohio is stuck in their own bubble world, my parents included. All I can do as a parent is let my children know that this world is not in a good place, and it's up to us to change it.
Southeast Ohio, too.
All of Ohio is pretty much in this bubble. I'm only 30 minutes from Columbus, bit it's like living in the deep south.
Waving from Michigan, stay strong, Buckeyes. Your state elected Sherrod Brown, a bone decent man, and things will eventually improve.
I'm fortunate that Cleveland isn't quite as bad as many other places in Ohio. It's still ever-present though. I see Trump flags on the windows of people I have known for years and know, or thought I knew were good people. It's sad.
And please, please if you have daughters don't ever let them visit ohio.
This so describes my own parents and my relationship with them, I cried all the way through it. Your advice is much needed and perfect. Thank you more than I can say.
Love you Laurie
You described exactly how I reacted. I'm inspired by how many people are affected similarly. Some tears of sadness, but lots of tears of joy for me.
I don't know why this oldie but goodie from Beau's archived posts showed up in my YT feed today, but it was much appreciated. Parenthetically, I can see now why he had to step back. The amount of folks that must've been reaching out to him for help would have staggered The Hulk! 🤢 Thank goodness Belle was there to step in and carry on the project. Thanks Ms Belle. 🙏🏼
_"We should be thankfull for the 1%, they built this country"_
Jesus.......
Depending upon whom you bring the subject up to, you'll hear some nonsense about playing the "race card," being "divisive," being "ungrateful" or just flat-out "if you don't like it here, leave!" Perhaps you'll get all of the above, plus some other... nonsense.🐂💩
Meanwhile, they want to describe slaves as "workers" who were happy with their condition, re-write textbooks to whitewash (😏pun intended) the situation, and protect statues of traitors that fought against the country they claim to love so much (literally, the US Constitution's definition of treason). Frankly, I'm "over" it. The hypocrisy is sickening 🤢🤬👎
@@tonyjones1560 Sounds like you're agreeing with my hypothesis 😊
@@brennam954 💯💯💯💯💯👍👍
Apparently freedom is when you pledge undying loyalty to a handful of rich people.
I'm in my later 50's, what "Beau" is saying is a universal truth. I feel for those younger generations, and apologize for the hypocrisy.
YOU have a chance to go out and make a better world, go make it happen!
Me also.
And I will do my best to help them.
This is the reason why conservatives hate education. Having to find out how things work and be against THEIR world view. It's the ultimate sin. I know parents who disowned their children simply because they were against Trump. Luckily for me, my Mother was more of an influence than my Father ever was so I turned out good.
Ha love the name.
This is why religion goes so hand-in-hand with right wing policies - churches don't want you being educated outside of what is in their bible.
@@nobodyknows3180 not really. I go to church and my pastor has always encouraged his "flock" to educated themselves. Though he is not a Christian right.
@@earlofsmeg that's anecdotal and they're are good conservatives. But a majority of right wing conservatives are brainwashed Christians
I am a older black woman from the south and I value your opinion when you on RUclips thank you and God-bless
12:00 Most of them gave up. I’m a part of your generation and I some of us are still fighting. Me, as a black man, I’m fighting 2 fights and trying to mentor those behind me to be a better person than the next. Be better than the generations before me. I wish our generation had the same support we are giving today.
This is about the saddest vid you've ever done. I could feel your tears welling up. I'm sorry this work is so painful for you sometimes. The work you're doing is extremely important and I appreciate you. Thank you
That touched my heart.
I immediately texted this to my Mom and aunt. This video defines so much of what I want to say to them. Thank you ❤️
Good morning, y'all. Love & Light from Mississippi. ✌🏼💚 [the writer of this particular letter took the words straight out of my own mouth/mind/life experience, so I've nothing to add besides HAVE A GOOD WEEKEND, BEAUTIFUL HUMANS.]
Good morning! ^-^
@@aylbdrmadison1051 💚💚💚
I have to say I'm constantly impressed just how wise Beau is. I've learned so much that it's even translateable, too the UK political situation.🤔👍🇬🇧
Watching Brexit happen (it was obviously already happening before, but I was paying less attention, my attention was for example on The City because of financial crisis in 2007/2008) from mainland Europe has been a euh... roller coaster of emotions with seeing many parallels with the US.
I can't imagine what it's like for you living in the UK.
Your voice of sincerity and plain language explanations needs to be amplified. America needs your voice . You expertly bring the issues down to the people who are most affected by the garbage they are being brainwashed by: each family and each person in that family, neighbourhood and community. A deeply sincere thank you for your calm and your integrity. Please keep on posting your reflections….we all need to hear the sane side of life these days!
