0:35 Haha... you caught me!! Nah.. I wouldn't make such a shoddy design if I were making these things. Funny stuff though. I guess I should send you my latest album on vinyl and cassette then, to complete the collection? ;)
Sure, thanks!
Hey anders! Thank you for your interior design contributions to Norway
This is anice instrument &Ilike it much.
At least you stopped by, thanks!
I figured that this little beauty would be a complete disaster. The fact that it’s only a partial disaster feels like some kind of victory.
Sign of the times...
Like anything nowadays... if it isn't awful, it's a good surprise.
What can I say? I love this channel, the humor in the videos, and especially.... especially the obscure music. We need more Ken-Tones songs, Kevin!
Was he playing the Ken-Tones as a tribute to Barrie?
I've gotta find 'The Walkers Tape' somewhere; it sounds absolutely amazing.
@@zpxlnga time machine back to the 80's without a DeLorean!!😅😅
It's always a good day when VWestlife uploads
I am so glad I found this channel all the best from the UK .
Probably someone didn't notice this, but if you take a closer look at the display on 20:44, you can see the signs for an AM/FM radio, SD/MMC/MemoryStick/SmartMedia/CompactFlash cards and USB, that means they used the screen from a more enhanced model that had an AM/FM tuner, USB input and a card reader, or the one from the mini HiFi system with a built-in turntable 🤣
You can also faintly make out the signs for MP3 and WMA, meaning those features might have been available on a higher end model too.
Not necessarily. This may be an off the shelf screen.
I noticed this, as I've stated in my comment; perhaps I should have read some comments first to see that someone else noticed it also. LOL.
Or it just means it's a screen that was probably used for other devices.
It’s probably just a generic off the shelf display that can be used in a variety of devices.
I'm primarily a "vinyl guy" , but I buy CDs occasionally also! Streaming is all well and good, but with something physical you can own a piece of history without worrying about if the music service is gonna censor or remove your favorite edition of your favorite album! I don't see why we can't have "both"! It's like if you have physical documents of a business, you don't have to worry if your computer or the internet crashes! I'm for ANY form of physical media , it's like having books! That's just me, it's not a crime to disagree with me!😊
I agree completely. I wouldn't be at all surprised if one day someone tries to ban Michael Jackson recordings. They already tried to ban Gone with the Wind for having a Black Actress playing a 19th century Black Woman in it despite the fact that she won an Oscar for her performance.
Michael Jackson did nothing wrong.
Those allegations of him being a pedo have been proven false.
Surprisingly well enengineered this thing. There must have been at least a few people with an actual love for audio involved in designing this.
Thanks for another interesting video 👌
You always find the weirdest stuff. I come home from work, and 22 minutes are gone just like that. Thanks for the video, you never fail to deliver some of the worlds most forgotten (and never knew existed) items.
I must chime in and agree 100% with your comments. Kevin is Mr. Obscure himself, in the flesh.
I admire VWestlife's musical taste, love those quirky indie sogs he puts up on paar with the regular royalty-free songs all the other youtubers are using, sometimes I wish he would put his personal playlist somewhere online...
I still have the playlists from when I used to do live shows on UStream: www.amstereo.org/playlist.htm
I want to hear more of that rhythmic walking tape
Please put the whole thing up for download, it's nowhere online!
Yes I searched everywhere too

Hahahaha came to the comments section looking for this 😂
Some of my most favourite things about your videos is the music you manage to find, like that awesome GNC Walker tape 😃
Yes...we need more of that tape.
Yes please 🙏
8:41 is Stupid Rock / Bee Caves by Slugbug. Might be great drinking song in an Irish pub
What I love about your videos is that you give all these weird, cheap systems a fair chance. And sometimes they prove to be better than the looks and brand might indicate.
I remember the Anders Nicholson name from the time you leafed through the Heartland America catalog. A ton of quality products in there.
That cicada killer album is awesome!! Glad you featured it so I could discover them!💖
I was disappointed to see their cassettes are sold out 😂
I was just going to post the same thing. Really great album but Bandcamp said only 18 tapes. I don't think they were expecting to have us chase after a copy. Hopefully they will release a VWestlife reissue.
@@bugdrvr yup, a lot of small groups do very limited cassette releases
God I remember the Legacybox debacle. At the least, this is probably one of the nicer things to come out of Heartburn America.
I have 8 tracks that still sound fine. Magnetic media is very robust.
What was the "LegacyBox" debacle-??
@@AndrewHeller-jn7dx In a nutshell they advertised a high quality digital conversion service for your old media, but they used the most lazy, and sloppy methods, thus resulting in piss poor garbage quality like taking stereo audio, and capturing it as super compressed mono, while way overcharging for the service
There is an older video on the channel about it where he sent off some media to the company to convert, gets it back, then he analyzes it for how piss poor of a job they did!!
So the service did nothing but pray on people who don't know any better about technology, and you can do a better job than they did with a basic USB capture card, and learning the basics of video editing software that's free like KdenLive which can run on most Linux distros, Windows, or Intel Macs.
@@qwertykeyboard5901 The oldest magnetic media, assuming it doesn't physically degrade is still fine. There is a youtube video of an Andrews sisters song being played from paper tape reel-reel. It sounds excellent.
The paper tape was a reel to reel English format in 1947 (IIRC) before the Mylar backing was standardized. This tape is the same as any other tape other than being on paper and not mylar.
The real problem with magnetic media and especially reel to reel is so much of it has physically degraded. The magnetic signal may be fine, but that doesn't help if the media is physically damaged.
@@AndrewHeller-jn7dxa company called legacybox claimed to do professional quality transfers of old media but instead gave you total crap, but it was targeted at people who wouldn't know better
You know it's gonna be a quality product when it has the "bright unreadable smeary" LCD on it
Extremely good profile pic you have there
@@FunkatronicDingus I will forward your compliments to the artist
Also likely an illegal product on par with a device designed to get around the copy protection on a video game console.
The RIAA managed to get regulation or law forbidding CD-Recordable audio equipment to use standard disks. Instead, they have to use special disks with a special tax that goes right to the RIAA.
Imagine giving an industry group direct taxing authority over consumers!!!!
Sometimes you can replace the polarizer with one rotated 90 degrees from the first and it will invert the colors. Inverted LCDs reminds me of those cheap timex indiglo blue digital watches in the mid 90s.
Speaking of bright smeary LCDs, i have a VERY cheap stereo that is so cheap, it doesn't even have a brand name, and it had an obnoxiously blue LCD screen for the "fake digital" radio tuner, which is just a (really good) analog tuner with a digital readout. The LCD is also on when the CD is playing.
I grabbed my soldering iron and I replaced the blue LED in it with a white one. It's a bit dimmer than the original LED, but most importantly, the screen is actually more readable, and its black segments on white background.
I have to say the 78s sounded really good on that! The drive spinning up to full speed issue seems to be ongoing in a market where more and more manufacturers use computer drives rather than a dedicated one, even in current model blu-ray players.
I am watching from Malaysia and love your videos, Kevin. There is never a dull moment on this channel. The various genres of music, the unexpected humor and the exhibition and demonstration of various audio/video equipments as well as computers and peripherals has made this channel very unique. Thanks for the detailed review video and all the best to you Kevin!

Ah, now this is all beginning to make some sense to me!
Thnx!
6:22 That's weird, since the button on the turntable is a microswitch, the input should be interpreted electronically, so it should be doable (just intead of the microswitch the electronic input would be an IR receiver). Because the whole unit appears to be just multiple off the shelf parts in one case, I think whoever made the assembled unit didn't want to do more wiring than what was neccessary to make the three inputs work together.
It would be very easy to implement, but that would be expecting too much from china.
Oh my. I literally just got a Crosley turntable, CD player, tape deck and radio all in one from Goodwill this afternoon. Just got back home to set it up and enjoy some tunes when I decided to head onto RUclips only to find this video uploaded 7 hrs ago. Wow. Good timing. Haha. Ok. Gotta watch the video now.
Edit: don't worry. It's all working just fine. No issues at all. All sounds great. Listen to a couple records, CDs, the radio and cassette. All sounds wonderfully pristine. Thankfully managed to get a good Crosley (for now) or someone worked on it before sending it in. There was actually a second Crosley all in one, but I was on a limited budget and could just barely afford the one I got.
Edit 2: it's a CR66-PA model.
It is quite surprising that this unit has a dedicated motor for the auto return function.
@@MikinessAnalog: Tell this Technics 😉
@@MikinessAnalog I have the SL-100C. It lifts up automatically. But not as elegant as this plastic thing 🤓
🤨 A bit unusual/a gimmick? that the turntable is still spinning when the tone-arm is returned
@@MikinessAnalog Probably not. Motors and modern microcontrollers are cheap. Engineering an effective, price-optimized gear / pulley / lever / sensor system is only cheap when you can subsidize it over hundreds of thousands of units.
Nice record player, it sounds great.
The tape deck will be the same as those in old car stereos. I had one in the 80's. I swapped it out for an 8-Track. (I wrote this before you lifted the top.)
Shame the CD is so noisey and there is no dampening of the turntable.
Great review.
Honestly I was surprised to find that ElectroBrand ceased to exist earlier this year, but I was also surprised to find that they were still around (until recently)! Great review as usual!!!
I'm once more amazed by the contents you bring to us all. I can only say to keep up and even higher as you always do with this amazing job, cuz I can't get enough of your videos. Thank you so much for everything, Kevin! ♥

Another brilliant review of a fascinating product. Your channel goes from strength to strength. You always have such an interesting selection of music too. That Cicada Killer cassette is wonderful.
The Walker Tape sounds AWESOME!
I'm shocked at how well the turntable performs considering how cheap this unit looks. Seems like the engineers wanted to do they best they could with what they had to work with, and they partially succeeded.
Your videos are always fun! You have a lovely colored vinyl collection.
I always admire the amount of research you do on this crap and in general. I can always trust your reviews.
Great video, Kevin. I suspect that the space above the cassette player is meant for a card/USB reader. Might be good to get your hands on a set of pry tools voor car trim.
I do have a set of pry tools, I just didn't want to use them and risk damaging the cabinet, because I'm not going to be keeping this.
@@vwestlife you wouldnt use car pry tools anyway - a couple of plastic spudgers and some guitar picks is the go - find em in any mobile phone repair kit
Kinda dig that "Walkers Tape", that would've help me out when I took walks with a walkman 25 years ago.
I have since bought the Neostar version of this record player, it's like you said. The record player sounds brilliant, the tapes play the same. I noticed that if you waited 5 seconds it what ever the recording counter counts in then record it's good. The Teac LP 500 USB dose the same thing, another one you recommended but it was a bit bulky and heavy for my unit that I have for my hi fi. I have the Neostar plugged into a LG CG45 hi-fi along with a graphic equaliser it sounds brilliant cheers Westlife!
My first time on your channel. Awesome content. Love the way you deliver the content. Thanks!
Love watching your videos… you’re awesome… much love from the UK
Thanks again for another wonderfully entertaining and informative video. I remember this type of unit from the "Heartland America" catalog a long time ago. I actually almost bought one, but later changed my mind. The turntable is actually the only great thing about this. I used to get the "Heartland America" catalog all the time a long time ago. I even bought a unit from them with the "Encore Technology" brand name on it. I also would like to point out that this same catalog sold this very same unit, but only with the "Encore Technology" brand name on it, with the only difference being that it had two mini-speakers with it. They simply continued selling these things by rebranding them "Anders Nicholson" and passing them off as new, but were simply the same things with a different brand name on them. Not only that, I checked them out on the BBB website and although they have a 4.21/5 rating based on customer reviews, they also have had some customer complaints, with eighty-six in the last three years and twenty-four in the last 12 months.
Thanks again and please keep them coming. I look forward to new videos from you always.
I actually had that bib cassette for your demonstrating back in 1974. I didn't think I'd ever see that again.:)
That Walkers tape sure has enough cowbell! That’s right! And I love it!
Needs more cowbell!
You could probably hack the firmware to set the burn speed to something slower (depending on how generous the sample buffers are on the unit -- hopefully they have enough), and install some rubber grommets on the optical drive to isolate the remaining vibrations.
Why bother though? Burning CDs is an obsolete concept and if you really wanted to do it there is much better hardware available to do it on.
The rubber grommets is exactly what I had in mind to try. Great suggestion!
The Neostar NTCD1V is identical to this. I was thinking of getting one at the time but thought it was just a cheap crap ceramic stylus that was on it. Your video proves that it's a great wee space saving record player that connected to a beauty amplifier would definitely be a good hi fi. I have to give it a shot now and see what I'm missing!.
Transition tones! Love your reviews
Before I ever viewed this, I saw the thumbnail and thought: "How much does it suck?" .
What I thought!
That GNC Walker's Tape sounds amazing, cool find. Nothing at all about it online.
That's really cool.. I have plenty of high end audio, but this is awesome all in one complete unit and the USB computer Audacity access makes me want one.
Made me want one too.......and I got one. Reading through the comments you'll find some good info and ideas. Not sure if I'll keep my unit or not. I like the overall design but the cassette player could have been better by adding at least rewind.
My highlight: the Walkers tape 😂. Greetings from Berlin
You have me hooked on that “les gillis and mountain fire” tape! I’d love to hear more of it
I would love to have a copy of that song 'cause I'm hooked as well. lol
I want hear it too!
That's a pretty cool little machine.
You can hear the unstable speed, but this machine is so nice 😍
Another great video! Thank you.
I think the Turntable is the coolest thing about the system, since it has an electronic pause, and a separate motorized tone arm, which you rarely see on any record players nowadays. It was most common back in the 80s, with track detecting turntables.
Presumably it would be usable to record records if you're using the USB pass-through to your computer? Or does the CD still spin fast?
The turntable or cassette player can be used on their own when outputting through USB.
at the start i was thinking that yes it looks good. but as the video went on looks was about it i was going to buy one but then i got the ion lp2cd witch was a better price at the time for me. it's a shame that it dose not record to a memory card like the ion dose before you record the cd that way you don't get the rumble on the turntable
At least it pays to shop around.
@@ChristopherSobieniak yes it dose also do a bit of research before hand never hurts
Thanks, vwestlife great review. I thought the turntable was going to be terrible and it was not that bad.Shame the cassette player was a let down. All the best. 👍
wow I remember seeing that TT when I used to get the american heartland mag ,i never liked it cause I hate any audio products in silver I grew up with cheapy audio equipment in that color ,but i am impressed with the fact the tone arm has a seperate tone arm motor my old onkyo cp-1055ff i believe had the same set up it was computer controlled and direct drive till the gear that drove the tone arm broke ,this unit is a little better than I figured ,kind of wish i could get one my old cd recorder broke down 6 years ago made a lot of good cd's with music mix wow this was great to see ,I really enjoyed this vid looks like I will bet seeing it again JRo
It seems remarkably well-engineered for what it is and when it came out, and I bet at some point the design might've even called for some kind of isolation or dampening between the components, but someone may've pinched some pennies and it went away. They should've thrown away the separate auto-return motor, but they probably saw the value-add of that to be better for sales than actual quality. You don't know it's going to be junk until you get it, and returning to a mail order catalogue is going to be a nightmare, especially if you don't have the mobility to get it all back together and get it to a post office.
This thing is actually pretty cool! Alao, it's always nice to see the blue screen transitions again.😊
I need that rhythmic walking tape.
As always a great video. Better than the Amstrad “hifi” I had back in the 1980’s but only just😉🏴
It's kind of like my Neostar TCDR-30C (and on googling, they sold what you have there as the Neostar NTCD1V here in the UK!), the differences between the two being that the TCDR-30C has a "wood" (MDF) cabinet, the cartridge is a ceramic job, and has integrated speakers which actually don't sound too bad, though, CD, tape & vinyl playback leaves a lot to be desired, so I mostly just used it as a bluetooth speaker...
Amazing little device!
It might be a CD-RW drive, they did make those with SATA interface. They don't anymore, but I built a PC back around 2009 that had a SATA connected CD-ROM drive.
Kevin i love that thing don't know why but its cool
Love yours videos have a nice one
I just want to hear more of that 'Walkers Tape' it was surprisingly catchy. 😂
My favorite thing about this channel is Vinyl Record!!😁
Reminds me of the ION LP2CD I have it had the GT cartridge and I got a lot of use out of it. However, that one allowed to record the turntable to memory, so you could make your edits, rearrange tracks, split or delete tracks, and the burn the CD.
@2:36 - The Blue LED - I have a Kinter tri-path amp that I use to power a set of Bose 2.2 speakers for PC audio. It had a blue LED (turned out to be 2) that lit up a ring around the amp volume knob. I physically could not sleep in the same room as that light - at all. I was going to swap them out for something more pleasing, but instead, I slipped a piece of heat shrink tubing around each one. I can still see the knob, but it's muted and dim now. Blue LEDS are the devil.
I usually replace blue LEDs with white, and stick resistors in series if needed. White looks better than blue anyway
Incredibly awesome device!!!! Modding it to be a good device would be a real challenge, whith a great result in the end.
I think..
I love this channel VWestlife!
I think it would be Okay as a PLAYER for someone "dipping" their toes in to physical media. The turntable seems quite nice for a unit of its kind. I could see someone wanting it for just THAT.
I need "the walkers tape" in my life.
9:09 that's the best sounding 78 that i've heard in a while
16:48 I had that exact same portable CD player.
Pretty weird how they used a PC DVD drive for the CD but then used a car cassette player.
Curious if you took that DVD drive out and hooked it to a PC if it would work.
They are selling this in the United Kingdom under the brand "Neostar" and probably under different other brands as well.
Amazing video
Some killer jams in this video
Good ole Heartburn America
oh my i need that walkers tape!
I would really like to hear more of that 60 minute rhythmic walking music. It sounds quite interesting and nice
I wonder if this could be modded so that the CD (DVD?) burner vibration is reduced or eliminated and/or replaced with a different drive.
Have you been able to check the rotation speed on the turntable? There's a smartphone appp for that.
Maybe there's some auto gain circuitry for the cassete player which makes the output hiss when there's basically no input? Because it sounded to me like the hiss came down gradually, but fairly quickly when the audio actually started. Just as I would expect some kind of integrating auto gain circuit to behave.
Very informative as usual VW. You must have a lot of storage and a very understanding wife.
if you use the track increment button, does it result in a cd that will play without a pause between tracks in a real player? ("without gaps")
Cool stuff.
Very cool turntable!
We have a turntable that looks just like that one and I noticed that the auto-return mechanism is not a velocity switch but it has been calibrated based on the speed selected. If the speed is set to 45 RPM it is calibrated to a 7" vinyl record with a smaller record label diameter so the auto-return only triggers when the stylus is closer to the center than the 12" vinyl records. The problem is when I played a 12" 45 RPM Maxi-Single vinyl record. Because of its larger record label diameter, the auto-return won't trigger even if the stylus reached the run-out groove. If the speed is set to 33⅓ RPM it is calibrated to a 12" vinyl record with a larger record label diameter. The problem is when I played a 7" 33⅓ RPM Micro-EP vinyl record. Because of its smaller record label diameter the auto return triggers before the music is finished.
Considering that it’s a newer system, it could be worse. Some parts are pretty nice, but some could definitely be better, but again for a 3 in 1 HiFi component, it isn’t too bad!
Thanks. If you just want to use it for playback, to powered speakers or headphones, I think this does a decent job for the money. I'm tempted to look out for one, I can't currently play cassettes or 78s...
The turntable is it's best feature. Better turntable design than some of today's turntable manufacturers. 😊
Man I love ur videos. I’m learning so much about technology LOL
how bout the Lars ulrich 8 track? or the greta tandberg amplifier?
Does anyone make one of these that doesn't have any performance issues?
Would be cool to see if you can somehow mod it and isolate the turntable.
Hmmm can you see how the optical drive is attached to the main board if it's not soldered on then there could be a chance of taking it out and using it externally with an extension cable.
The video shows that it was a standard pc drive with sata cables hot glued to the drive. I’d imagine theoretically you could remove the drive and get some extender cables. It would just be much easier to connect the usb cable and record to a pc.
