Ok so I played the Definitive Edition, and in that version, they remove Vergil’s fedora, and I feel kinda robbed, cause that shit’s hilarious. As someone who prefers the mainline games, I will say; I think everyone (myself included) would’ve been way less harsh towards this game if it just didn’t call itself Devil May Cry, because the coolest parts of this game are when they do something new and not trying to follow the DMC lore. Like, as a character action game, this game has a lot of really cool ideas: The option to choose whether you want to pull yourself or the enemy with the grappling hook, the dynamic camera, the announcer for the style meter, the decision to go fully Metal with the soundtrack, and of course, *Limbo is sick as fuck.* This game is way more enjoyable if you treat it like it’s a different series and not Devil May Cry, because this shouldn’t have been Devil May Cry. This should have been an original IP, with Dante and Vergil and so on having their own unique names, cause that would’ve been *so much cooler.* That’s my opinion on it, at least. Also they should’ve had different names cause the grammar freak in me makes me want to punch the speaking character whenever they mispronounce Mundus or Yamato.
And now you've met Donte (or DINO, Dante In Name Only) and Vergin Like the "joke" goes, DmC Devil May Cry would be a really good game if it wasn't called Devil May Cry, the character assassinations, and the difference in tone to the rest of the games are the biggest issues most people have with this game
DmC: Devil May Cry is not a bad game, in fact its actually pretty good. The new combat system that combines new weapons and ways of fighting as well as keeping a good grasp on the classics from the rest of the series. The awesome aesthetic. Ninja Theory said they went from the originals more gothic and Rock style to a more Grunge and punk one. And the music is amazing, fantastic soundtrack. Now for the bad. The story and dialogue are poorly written but think they are super clever so they comes across as cringe. The Characters are poorly written having no consistency and behave completely different to the already established canon.(Something a lot of fans of the series didn't like) (Ninja Theory saying that this is because this game takes place before DMC3 and this is also the reason the that Dante doesn't have his iconic White hair). Also changing Sparda from this cool and powerful dark knight to a loser. The change of Eva from a mere human (blonde) to an Angel (redhead) doesn't do anything for the story other then giving Dante and Vergil some blue powers to go alone with there red ones. (Personal I didn't really mind it, just thought it was kinda pointless) Here is some more backstory on why many fans or the series don't like or consider this a DmC game. The original trailer for the game showed a character that didn't look or act like Dante, but said he was. Then the game Director and head producer of Ninja Theory did an interview criticizing the fans, telling them that they didn't care about there opinions and that they just had to deal with it. This cause a huge outcry from fans to boycott the game.
IIRC a lot of the hate for DMC came from how the dev team treated the old Devil May Cry games, basically calling the old version of Dante lame and gay and how they're version was SOOOOOO much cooler. A lot of old fans were burned, but now that the dust has settled and the old series has been revived, it's easier to appreciate DMC as its own thing.
This is Ninja Theory's Magnum Opus. The lead dev was narcissistic, they only showed the boss fights to Itsuno, that's why 5 has the clone DT for Vergil, it was his idea lol. Basically everything good in the game regarding gameplay was Itsuno's team spoonfeeding them with tips haha Also check out Donté, el exterminador de demonios video, its a classic. Also some DmC interviews, especially with Vergil, it was edited the most emo way possible haha
@@studiogimli7645 There are a lot of videos about the topic, i saw at least 5 explaining the DmC situation with Ninja Theory. I don't own you anything btw, you can search too.
42:17 that’s exactly what the developers of the game said when they experienced backlash and it’s the most ignorant thing I’ve ever heard. It’s not because he doesn’t have white hair it’s because his personality is completely different, it is not Dante just some guy who happens to share his name
Men there were people arguing on that time about dante's hair and they were not a little group of people so, i can't give you the complete reason on that, because both developers and fans were saying thing for no reason, at the end of the day this is not a bad game for nothing
Ok you guys are hilarious. It's cool to see new people giving this game a fair shot and having fun w/ it. This version of Dante is one of my favs and the combat's so so fun and fluid too that has held up and aged really very well over the years along w/ DMC4.
Sometimes, spotting a girl who was (probably still is) a HUGE fan of Linkin Park is easier than you think, lol. I'm saying that, because you have to admit that this games aesthetic is VERY Linkin Park. (and I'm also saying that as someone who still listens to the Reanimation album from time to time, lol)
fun fact: the devs back-peddled on ALOT of things in the definitive edition of the game. like making daniel's hair white, removing a game mechanic (i won't say what) and my personal favourite REMOVING THE FEDORA 😭
My main complaint with this game, besides the characters and story, is that it's too easy. Even on the hardest difficulty, the enemies die way too quickly.
31:17 that was part of it, like with every other reboot but I think the thing that detracted a lot of people was how hostile devs became and then the media showed up and started making it worse by throwing fuel into the fire, it was just a shit show. Like, dmc is or was a pretty niche bunch of games, not everyone likes them like your playthroughs showed xD. So insulting the previous games along with the previous versions of the characters people liked alienated a lot of the people that would actually buy their game. They didn't bring a new audience big enough for it to he successful on it's own and the ones that would have bought just cause it has dmc in the name didn't show up, in the end this game was kind of a flop, sadly. Also in consoles it ran at 30 fps unlike dmc4 that ran at 60, it was kinda glitchy, it was easier than previous games and bla bla. A lot of that got fixed and even better stuff got added into the definitive edition (which never released on pc) but the damage was already done by then :(
I'm going to throw this in the air. There is a level further into this game that will burn your eyes. And I don't mean that the level looks ugly. I mean that it is so bright and filled with bloom you will not be able to see. Idk if the dev fixed it in an update, but just prepare your retinas
Okay, so here's a bit of context about why people are so divided in this game from someone who was in the trenches of the discussion forums back in the day. Nowadays, now that we have DMC 5, people are a lot more receptive of the reboot, but back in the day, we didn't know if the series and characters that we had grown attached to would ever return. Almost everyone concluded that we'd be settled with these versions of Dante and Vergil going forward. And for obvious reasons, that didn't sit well with a lot of folks, which, on top of a lot of other things, led to an overall feeling of vitriol towards the game. Among the things I mentioned was how some of the promotions for this game were handled by the developers. One guy in particular took a particularly combative stance on things, mocking the original Dante, his games, and the fanbase for being attached to those things instead of instantly receptive to the new hotness. For obvious reasons, one of the lead devs making an ass of himself in marketing and on interviews did a lot of burn any good will that the reboot could've otherwise received. Then there are other things. For many, this reboot didn't need to exist because DMC 4 sold perfectly fine. For many, this reboot was a step back from the previous games because the gameplay was more constricting and simplified, in a series that was known for combat filled with depth and self-expression. For many, the game's story, writing, themes, and alternative versions of pre-existing characters failed to strike a chord with the audience, but since that's going into spoiler territory, I'll leave it at that. Personally, I think there's a lot to like about the reboot, and a lot of people agree with me. Namely, Hideaki Itsuno, the series director since DMC 2, who went on record to say that he liked A LOT of things about the reboot, and went on to implement some of those things in DMC 5.
So what was it like, finding out that this variant of Virgil is a redditer? Tbh, ignoring all the weird shit, it's honestly a really fun game for what it is
All the dmc games feel nostalgic but the reboot feels extra "I'm on the playground and the cool older kids are talking about playing dmc dmc (silly title) on their xbox" I really like the vibes even if its dated to a very specific point in time but thats the charm pre dmc5 games have to me
This game has a complicated place in the DmC fanbase’s eyes. It’s a great game, don’t get me wrong, but the dev team had very not good opinions about the original games and the characters therein. It left a bad taste in a lot of fans’ mouths More to that point, the scene where a wig/mop lands on Dante’s head to make him look like OG Dante, and he says “not in a million years”, that scene pissed off a lot of fans.
The director (I think it was the director) calling lady a prostitute with a bazuka was crazy. It's weird they went with that attitude towards the older games when supposedly the team wanted something closer to the originals until capcom told them to do something different.
A lot of people critique this game only for differences, saying this would be better as another IP, but I really dont see the appeal just in general. It's very generic western style action-slasher, just killing ugly guys endlessly and getting S-ranks without any combos. Before I played my first dmc game, DMC5, I thought dmc is a boring series because it's a slasher, coincidentally my friend's first dmc game was this one when he was a teenager and he thought it was a boring slasher. You can certainly do cool combos, but you probably understand how this easy control scheme that frees you, followed by S-ranks announcements every fight, restricts creativity for older players quite a bit. Glad you're enjoying it though, no reason to stomp someone's fun. I agree that more pristine gameplay is certainly better, no fixed cameras, better platforming, less overly annoying enemies. Although the appreciation for this Dante is concerning lmao. I've seen a rumor they changed him from the first trailer because of people complaints but that actually made it worse so instead of being a completely different character he is now this chimera of the old clown and the new depressed kid, with no personality and no interest in the voice, just throwing basic insults at the enemies very smuggly, pure highschool attitude weaponized. Worse than Nero in that regard. Jp wacky-ish style in media definitely does something to the suspension of disbelief that helps in other games of the series. People have always seen Dante as a clown with serious motivations (or growing into them in dmc3) without much cringe. To the point of many people not even remembering how clownish he is (there have been some people mad with DMC5 because Dante is too unserious). In DMC reboot it's obviously different. From what I remember the dialogues get worse so I hope to see you enjoying the game while trashing Dante and Virgil, now that'd be a sweet fortune.
I really need to play this game. I avoided it because of the bad reputation but there is really cool stuff here. The art direction and level design is so cool Also its kinda funny how you say DMC3 Dante hair was emo when if i remember correctly Dante from this game was called emo But hey times change (and also people were very mean about this game) Honestly i remember hearing Dante from this game was juvenile but really it seems outside of some lines he isn't that bad
Hey Sanna! Hey Amanda! Hey Michaela! I agree with you that DMC Devil May Cry is a good game and the soundtrack is awesome (Yes i'm a metalhead lol). I remember seeing Virgil waering the fedora on the xbox 360 version i played with my sis and when my sis got the definite edition on the ps4 we noticed the fedora got patched out of the game haha. And i agree that Dante looks good in this game haha. Great video as usual! 😃👍
You can like the game as much as you want, I'm still gonna make fun of the fact that Ninja Theory put Dante alongside Brokeback Mountain because Japanese people tend to be culturally insensitive with other cultures. Lol.
This game is a huge guilty pleasure of mine. It’s so far removed from what Devil May Cry actually is but it’s still pretty damn fun in its own way. Looking forward to this playthrough.
Honestly as a game DMC Reboot is fine. Story wise yeah no its kinda bland compared to the other games which kinda need a bit of a deep dive to understand. I will say this version of Dante I believe is often labeled as D.I.N.O. (Dante In Name Only) by the community, ironically made the basis for Nero's personality in DMC5. Though the game's negative reputation is because of how the director of this project kinda was a dick to the community during the lead up to the release even dissing Dante's old look saying the reboot one is better. Its one of the factors but there is a lot more i feel other people have made videos on.
Wow this is the first time I've seen someone enjoy this game. I love this game, thanks for playing it. I hope you guys enjoy the rest of your playthrough.
Never played this game myself, but the common complaints I used to hear was that the gameplay was way too easy, the story was bad, and the characters were lame in comparison to their canon versions(I definitely agree with this so far lol i love my edgy power obsessed boy Vergil)
This games is soo good, the combat in my opinion it's feel better if we compare it with DMC4 wich was released in the same generation. I undarstand why the people hate this game because there is a backstory, for example devs were always saying that this was gonna be better dmc than the others, but they were not saying it in a good way, but that also happened because of the fandom, the devs were too angry with them 😅 and i cant complain them because dmc fandom on that time were not giving them any opportunity at least. There are more background with this game, but at least currently more players are giving it an opportunity. Like something curious Hideaki itsuno was in charge for DMC 3, 4 and 5, and he loves this game so much at the point that if you play dmc5 you will notice some inspiration, for example the presentation of the enemies, and if you listen the music during the combat is increasing while you are getting better rank, that 2 stuff comes from this one for example Obviously there are some stuff that i prefer from the previous game like vergil for example 😅, I like both dantes, in general this game is not bad, and a would like a sequel. As a recommendation you can play the DLC with vergil because at least that one is not like the previous dmc games where was the same game but whit vergil, the dlc with vergil from this dlc is a sequel practically, a new story but abously shorter than the main game Sorry for my english✌🏻
Ahh this game, looked into it recently and yeah this is the reboot no one asked for. Apparently from what I’ve heard and seen the combat is pretty fun, the new character designs aren’t as good and the story is redone in a way no wanted and seems to be over the top in a crap way, everything else seems ok. Also apparently the original version of this game wasn’t good but with the remaster fixed things up, even when trying to reboot they were F***ing up.. man was Capcom in a dark age… So yeah pretty hated title, I think over time now that fans got the normal series revived and is doing better then ever thx to DMC5 some have more of an appreciation for this game. Tbh I feel the reason you didn’t enjoy the previous games is because you didn’t play them well, spammy gameplay and all, it’s why I’m curious to see you do dmc5 again to see if you play a higher difficulty level and see how you feel after. Then again it’s the game that has V, Dante’s Micheal Jackson dance and Neros epic transformation scene so I imagine you will still like it lots. Hope you three had a merry Christmas and a happy new year. ❤️💛💙
I understand why people hate this game, but you can't deny the artstyle and the soundtrack were great, and the gameplay was smooth and not as hard to master unlike DMC3, 4 or 5.
Finally, the best dmc game Jokes aside, there's a lot i really like about this game as someone who has played through the whole series. The artistic vision is so focused and they really nailed the tone and attitude they were going for. I personally like the more cinematic and less punishing combat too, because it makes it more accessible for new players and doesn't only pander to the combo madness guys. There may be a decent amount wrong with the game, but its nowhere near deserving the infamy it got.
Ah yes, Devil May Cry:Devil May Cry, staring Donte el exterminador de demonios and Virgin. Seriously, play the game in Spanish if you want to laugh yourselves to death. Beyond that, it has the worst version of Dante, the worst version of Virgil, the worst version of Mundus, some standard gameplay that's too easy even in higher difficulties, some interesting looking weapons and that's about it. Oh and an actually interesting bossfight later on but that's about it
Can't wait to see the mountain of reboot haters flood the comments section of every video you make about this game. Some people still hang on to their grudges against this game even after a over a decade has past lol.
I dislike the plot (not too bad perse tho), the gameplay has always been sick. I also hate/love the dlc which shall not be written yet till the moment it is OK for me to rant.
Sorry for being late to the party and i love your journey so far of the Dmc titles . but some context need to be add some more to accurate view of the time then it was af if Capcom sold the ip to a new company and the trailer did a massive damage that he was smoking and a gothic punk asthatique was way off vastly a different the normal old non smoking no sex so far pizza dante and at the time the success of this title was probably meant a sequel and the deat of the old one which had 4 installment and a dedicated fanbase . as you have read lady's it not the game fault it the ip mismatch and cow cash idea of dmc name which it wasn't ninja theory and they labor shown i have said it i would prefer a DMC 2 then a devil may cry 6 but a dadicated sparta game is my number 1 priority for me .
I know this game has it's moments, but the characters' voices sound... generic. I'd take Dante's sonic impression and Vergil's motivated voice over whatever these voices are. Also, apparently, El Donte's Bizarre Starre is supposed to be referencing the bibically accurate Dante and Vergil.
The game is complicated for me. The gameplay and level design is good but the story is terrible. And this game was responsible for almost killing the series
I'm not gonna complain about the game, seeing you three enjoying the game is great enough for me. 👍
Ah yes, El Donte and his brother Virginia.

If only this game titled "John Can Laugh", i'd love this game
I really need to play this game. I avoided it because of the bad reputation but there is really cool stuff here. The art direction and level design is so cool
Also its kinda funny how you say DMC3 Dante hair was emo when if i remember correctly Dante from this game was called emo
But hey times change (and also people were very mean about this game)
Honestly i remember hearing Dante from this game was juvenile but really it seems outside of some lines he isn't that bad
Do it, specially if you can get the definitve edition, it adds a bunch of cool stuff
I almost didn't wanna watch cause this game is an insult to the other 5 games (even 2), but I love you three so here I am
Hey Sanna! 😃👍
The fedora being removed is so sad and funny at the same time XD Glad the Steam version we are playing is going with the OG release xD
@@misaamgremlins Yes he looks silly wearing a fedora haha 🤣
YEEEESS HE HAS THE HAT!!! PLS if you play dmc5 again mod the faust hat to be vergil's fedora
YES! XD
El Donte is leagues better than standard vanilla English Donte
"sonic the hedgehog" is better than Temu Nero.
Oh God, I thought they looked this one in the basement.
This game was the first DMC game I ever actually played and was so confused as to why is Dante older in old game and so different
And the whole fandom wept
13:21 Well dang.
I agree, this Dante is pretty cute. I'm also calling it now that the news reporter, Bob is a demon. He's probably not. but I don't trust him.
Oh my god i completely forgot about the fedora!
If this Vergil is wearing a fedora is he a pimp?
Man these comments are hilarious as fuck
The question I'm making myself right now is if this is the version with the fedora vergil or the non fedora vergil
Peak Cinema for real.
We finally found the target audience for this game lmao 💀
The truly enlightened ones respect El Donte
they actually did it
Oh no...
In this version I gotta ask, are we sure Daniel and Vegas are twins and from the same fathers?
This games is soo good, the combat in my opinion it's feel better if we compare it with DMC4 wich was released in the same generation.
I undarstand why the people hate this game because there is a backstory, for example devs were always saying that this was gonna be better dmc than the others, but they were not saying it in a good way, but that also happened because of the fandom, the devs were too angry with them 😅 and i cant complain them because dmc fandom on that time were not giving them any opportunity at least.
There are more background with this game, but at least currently more players are giving it an opportunity. Like something curious Hideaki itsuno was in charge for DMC 3, 4 and 5, and he loves this game so much at the point that if you play dmc5 you will notice some inspiration, for example the presentation of the enemies, and if you listen the music during the combat is increasing while you are getting better rank, that 2 stuff comes from this one for example
Obviously there are some stuff that i prefer from the previous game like vergil for example 😅, I like both dantes, in general this game is not bad, and a would like a sequel. As a recommendation you can play the DLC with vergil because at least that one is not like the previous dmc games where was the same game but whit vergil, the dlc with vergil from this dlc is a sequel practically, a new story but abously shorter than the main game
Sorry for my english✌🏻
vergil is in F tier only bc it stands for Fedora
I understand why people hate this game, but you can't deny the artstyle and the soundtrack were great, and the gameplay was smooth and not as hard to master unlike DMC3, 4 or 5.
I'm gonna need some Yakuza Bs to drink from this
Finally, the best dmc game
Jokes aside, there's a lot i really like about this game as someone who has played through the whole series.
Goat DmC
I've haven't played this game yet, but the gameplay seems good.
I don't care what the haters/naysayers say, this is a great Devil May Cry game.
(I enjoy both OG and reboot)
Your gonna hate Vergil in this
00:5 this just kills me lol, Vergil would never say some shit like this, even if he was in a awful situation, he would say it in a cooler tone,
oh wow you all cool and i enjoy you're videos
Funnily enough, this was my first DMC game… all cause I wanted to talk to a girl bout it😂. Never finished it tho
Omg didn't know y'all would play reboot bcs donte and vergin there is chaotic😭
You do realize this means war?
El Donte, long time no see😅
Look the game is great and the combos are fun, but it's not Devil May Cry.
People hate this game cause they give you double jump off the bat rather then earning and buying it like a regular game, lol.
Yeah that’s why it rocks lmao
Sorry for commenting so late it was great the last person I watched play this was a man named scribe
Is this a punishment? Because I’d have preferred another dmc 2 playthrough, donte should stay where he belongs, in my memories
El Exterminador de Demonios will NEVER BE JUST A MEMORY!!!
The game isn't bad.
I dislike the plot (not too bad perse tho), the gameplay has always been sick. I also hate/love the dlc which shall not be written yet till the moment it is OK for me to rant.
Honestly? Great game, peak, just shouldn’t be a dmc game, other then that i love it.
Devil May Cry, more like Devil May Censor
People are talking how bad the story is when DMC 5 is just as bad as this (even worse)
Vergil is funny in this game tho LMFAOOO
have respect for yourselves, please
Should’ve played the Definitive Edition
Hell nah! There's no Fedora Vergil in that one xD
The game is complicated for me. The gameplay and level design is good but the story is terrible. And this game was responsible for almost killing the series
