One of the worst things about this is someone is going to try to make the book based on Buzzfeed's instructions and potentially give up on book binding because it came out poorly when in reality even SeaLemon struggled.

K Price if they’re really into it, they’ll keep going, and thankfully the youtube algorithm will definitely lead them here. my first expeditions were total crap but i still keep them around for memory’s sake, it’s only now that i’m half decent (and actually looking it up) that i’m stumbling on to channels like these where the real expertise is

@@spookykidbunny That's fair. I'm not saying everyone will give up. But there's a chance that some will. Their video was almost garbage with all the inaccuracies. It's like they didn't try and that isn't fair to their viewers.

Buzzfeed as 5 minutes crafts are oriented for gaining views and money so they upload videos everyday even a few times a day but the quality of what they are showing is not only poor, but in lots of cases is just fake and very often is very dangerous like making white strawberries by putting the fruit in a container with bleach. So no wonder their book project was a fail. But in the end we see another book that seems to look good so why they didn't show making this one. A bit of warning for everyone to not trust those types of channels, especially with anything related to food just for your own safety.
I love SeaLemon's book. It looks gorgeous. I have to search for this type of vinyl in my country. It's beautiful.

I love your version, and now I want to make one myself. I also love the dual edge tool for making deckled edges. It's ingenious. I have made a lot of deckled edges with a ruler, but it's not easy. The paper tends to tear unevenly. My dream project is doing a photo album/life scrapbook covered in leather with marbled paper inside the cover that I make myself. I used to do calligraphy and have always wanted to make a homemade book.
Thank you so much for your tutorial. It was explained very clearly and thoroughly. I can't wait to watch the rest of your videos.

I'm in a bookbinding class. At the end of it a person asked the instructor for RUclips recommendations. She had none. "People do things like use glue sticks and those books are going to fall apart in a year." She was partially right, there's lots of nasty bad advice on RUclips. Unlike you, who gives great advice. And who is extremely nice to people making videos without checking their work. Yay you!
Thanks for the before and after. Yours does look a lot better. Now for me to go make some of the same. Right after I give the "Sealemon is having a heart attack" comment at BuzzFeed.

@@SeaLemonDIY Looks like they started with A4 measurements and then tried to convert, without realizing that A4 and letter are different sizes...if the cover paper had been A4 I think it would have worked. And probably measured in metric and had rounding error converting to imperial for the rest of the numbers.

  • @johexxkitten
    @johexxkitten 5 лет назад +125

I’d say you’re being too nice, they do deserve at least censure rather than “hate” for their video. If someone follows their video they will feel that they must be doing it wrong, maybe even “I can’t do this” and maybe they won’t try again. They could turn away from a craft/art they could love and potentially excel in. Plus they waste resources and money on this, their book is useless. Someone might be making these as gifts to save them money and yet gift something beautiful and personal so someone their care about.
So the very least they owe is a duty of care to ensure that their videos are accurate, as you pointed out, they could add in the edit where errors occurred (we’re all human and make mistakes) and add correct measurements in the description.
But “channels” (I use the term loosely) like these are not about actually providing information and tutorials. They are just click bait and click farms. They want as many videos as they can going out every day so that they get more interaction, more clicks, more ad revenue...
Think about it, if I want to try this, I’ll watch the entire video, then I’ll gather the items I need. Then I’ll probably watch again as I craft along with it. Afterwards I will watch it again to see why the hell mine looks like dog barf but theirs is perfect. So I will have watched their video maybe 3 times at least.
I truly wish people would search for actual crafters for tutorials rather than these “five minute hack” type videos.
I shudder to think how many of their terrible book has been made and binned... the resources on our planet are precious and dwindling, and videos like theirs add massively to the problem.
They also devalue true crafts, they claim your can make this perfectly in no time at all... so why would I pay a true creator X amount when I now “know” it only took them 5 minutes? These crafters/artists must be just scamming us right? So they just take a turd, roll it in glitter and people who have not actually see a REAL crafted item think they only need to pay us turd rolled in glitter money... and we all know the value of that.
I wish people would stop clicking these videos and feeding these troll channels.
You book looked gorgeous btw, my old friend is about to hit 50 (I beat her to it in November) we met in Nursery school at about 4yo, I plan to make her a gift of an album of our friendship over all those years, including our families as we build them (she has an army of grandkids already!) I plan to make it more scrapbook style, with jokes, comments, quotes & anecdotes etc from our lives together. She is the sister of my soul not blood, I know she’d love this more than just one of those “photo books” you can buy online.
I’m off to look on amazon for vinyls for covering it. 💜

@Kenzie-Anne Grant, BuzzFeed has always been irresponsible in their videos. They posted one a while back about Bobby Dunbar. The vid was posted within the last 3-4 years, but they couldn’t take the time to research any updates on the story. It took me no more than 10 minutes to find a 2010 update about the case. And that was just doing a Google search. The update I found was rather significant, too. I never watch (or trust!) BuzzFeed videos anymore.

I have watched more than a few videos on bookmaking. You rule! I have saved your videos on my RUclips library and go to them each time I make a book.
My kettle stitch needs lots of practice. Even so I was quite happy that I ended up with a nice working book at the end. Thank You!
Just need to practice the precise placing of the holes on the signatures so the stitches across the spine are a bit more straight. I found 3 more challenges. The book had 8 - 4 page signatures plus painted chipboard covers in front and back. I used a hand waxed twisted cotton embroidery thread doubled. I found attaching the cover to the first and last signatures a challenge as the holes on the covers are not on the edge. The another challenge is the wear and tear on the thread is noticable to me. The last challenge is keeping the signatures on the bound edge perfectly even is no easy matter. Any hints on these would be greatly appreciated.
Last but not least I did laugh often as I struggled and wrestled to get all the flippy floppy pieces under control. Thank you again for a challenging, fun and rewarding experience.

Just an FYI there is a deckle edge guillotine trimmer by Tim Holtz being released soon by Tonic Studios. The methodology used in the Buzzfeed video is similar to what crafters use when making booklets or other crafty things, except that they don’t do the weird spine gluing and then add the paper to the inside cover. They are usually better with their measurements than Buzzfeed too!

I plan on doing this with the same paper style and binding but with thick card stock for the cover to make multiple books for different collections in my bullet journal 📔 🥰

A cool tip for spreading glue. If you use a silicone brush (like a BBQ brush, for instance), the glue comes off really easily after it dries.

If nothing else, I learned early on in bookbinding that glue is not your friend as you found in the initial buzzfeed video. Not badmouthing them, however, gluing like that makes a mess. I'd rather stitch my bindings. Thanks for the comparison, thought.

To make holes in the paper stacks, I use a rotary tool after clamping down the paper so it does not move

I didn't think any of the DYI stuff on places like BuzzFeed were meant to actually be done. I thought it was just for looks. But, yes, I'm glad it inspired you. And, now you can see how far your reach has gone!
