【About Asian Small-clawed Otters】
First, otters are different from sea otters.
Sea otters spend most of their time in the water, but otters can live both on the ground and in water.
A few years ago, trafficking otters became a serious problem, and in 2019, CITES (Washington Convention) increased the classification of otters from CITESⅡ to CITES I, which banned international trade.
Having an otter as a pet is illegal in most countries. However, in Japan, otters can be traded, although it is limited to domestic breeds only.
Currently, severe restrictions are in place for buying and selling otters in Japan. For example, microchips need to be inserted in both babies and parents, and owners need a special permit. Circumstances of birth must also be reported in detail.
As a result, there is currently no buying and selling of baby otters in the market. There is a severe penalty for selling and buying otters with unknown birth origins without permits. This was effective in eliminating trafficking, and we don’t see otter trafficking on the news anymore.
Kotaro and Hana were both born in Japan and have permits.
It is so much work to have an otter as a pet. You need to be ready for more than its cuteness. They are loud, and they sometimes bite you. Food and water get very expensive, and you cannot keep otters in cages because they are active. Also, we never leave them at home. We always look after them closely like we do with human children, and our top priority is always them.
If you want to have an otter as a pet, you must be able to follow the law and devote your life to it. If you don’t have that resolve, you should never have one as a pet.

When I was little, the only thing I wanted was a pet otter. Someone gave me an otter stuffie that I was obsessed with for years. My mother sold him for a nickel at a garage sale and I STILL haven't completely forgiven her. This channel makes me so so happy ❤️

What do you mean? They got along great yet again once Ui was taken elsewhere to calm down. Aty even tried to climb into Kotsumet's car to hang out more with his best friend.
Yeah, still good though, just felt that there were more hugs when Aty didn't have so much emotionally restrain. That was a good moment when Aty jumped into the car to be with Kotaro.
I find Ui disturbing. I hope Otterman doesn't breed her.

Just knowing that there are people still in this world right now that treat our animals this way gives me hope not all humanity has gone afterall. God bless anyone who takes in an abandoned pet, a rescue, or anyone needing care and gives them the best life they can.
Especially one so violent. Many would have given up on Ui like her first caretaker did. Otterman is a saint for his patience and understanding.
@@ManOutofTime913 Ui's first caretaker is the one who mistreated her to begin with (the otter cafe where she was before then might also have played a role as I'm certain it was nowhere near as legit as Loutre). Otterman has a good heart and animals clearly see that -- otters seem to just love him at first sight.

I know Aty listens to Otterman all the time or almost all the time as if he understood Japanese. Even Ui, as wild as she is, seems to understand Otterman and listens to him as well.
@@Soufriere84 Yes, it was probably one of the cafes without water and probably one of the ones where the otters are separated from humans in small glass enclosures given how much she likes cages and boxes. She was probably abused by her caretaker at some point and that's likely why she began to associate anything outside of her cage as an enemy and a threat. The reason she was abandoned is I believe because she got stressed to the point of attacking the other otters and probably refusing to accept treats and trying to attack people that approached her even from inside the cage. Many people would give up on an animal when it stops being cute and starts acting feral because understanding the animal and giving it love is more difficult than thinking of it as a defective product or a possession they no longer want and dumping it where it can become someone else's problem or having it euthanized. I don't use the word lightly, but I hate people like that.
Otterman stresses the importance of talking to the otters, as they are a social animal, and he usually teaches them how best to swim in the river when other otters come to visit him. So I think he really comes off as a big hairless otter and a peaceful, loving patriarchal figure to them.

I'm glad that you tried to meet UI again though. Even though it ended up like this, Otterman knows her reaction to other otters besides Aty and that she needs to get used to them. Hopefully he can acclimate her so she can make friends with Kotaro and Hana. If there's one thing she deserves, after being kept in confined spaces for most of her life and then abandoned by humans before Otterman took her in, it's more otter friends.
I think I said this to you in another reply, but I'll repeat it for the masses: My take on the situation is that Ui would do best at learning socialization with other otters if Aty is nowhere near her. It doesn't take a zoologist to look at Ui's behavior and conclude she felt she was "protecting" Aty. If he isn't nearby, it's more likely than not she would act differently -- probably still scared, but maybe less defensive. Worth noting she was _great_ with the humans.
@@Soufriere84 Her progress with the humans is great, yes. She even let herself be pet by someone other than Otterman which is a great sign!
I'm of two mind about separating her from Aty. On one hand, it would probably quiet her instinct to protect unless she feels the same about Otterman (not likely though not outside of the realm of possibility), but it seems she's also tied her feelings of safety and happiness to Aty. Separating them might not do much more than make her even more anxious and scared.
I think a slower introduction would benefit her quite a bit. Maybe cage her for a while, where she still seems to feel comfortable, and let her see Aty interacting positively with other otters and let them get used to each other without the chance of dangerous bites before trying a face-to-face meeting. I think the sudden introduction might have been a shock to the poor girl and hard triggered her fight-or-flight response.
The important thing is that we know what her reaction is, and now Otterman can try some different methods to see what she responds best to. She's come such a long way already and I'm hoping with this big step she'll finally find peace in herself and make lots of friends and enjoy life swimming in the river with them.
@@ManOutofTime913 You make a great point in your 2nd paragraph. It's the same argument Loutre made when she chose to sequester pregnant neurotic Otter Otsuyu with twin sister Odashi instead of father Oage when it came time to give birth. Unfair to him, but probably better for Otsuyu's mental health. Ui does not react well when dropped into a situation she doesn't understand. Ui is smart, but even she needs time.
If Ui has become so emotionally dependent on Aty that she literally can't be without him -- there's good reason to believe this is the case -- then yes, having him completely gone might drive her even more bonkers than she already is and, like you say, would be counterproductive to the goal.
I agree with your third paragraph completely. Normally, I'd hate to see Ui in the cage again, but she _does_ still feel comfortable there so it wouldn't be abusive to use it for training purposes. As a matter of fact, it's exactly how Kotsumet first introduced Kotaro to then-Baby Hana. Other otter-keepers usually introduce otters to each other through a barrier first for exactly the reason we saw here.
Aty & Ui were introduced with a cage wall between them out of necessity but Otterman seems to have a dislike of cages except when absolutely necessary. He let Ui nearly kill him because he wanted her out of that cage. For a move like that, there's no "between" -- it's "in" or "out", so no choice but to rip the proverbial bandaid off and let the chips fall where they may.
Otterman would probably be the first to admit he's not perfect, even when he means well. He's also very analytic in his thinking process. This meetup clearly didn't turn out like he'd hoped. Kotsumet seems to have taken it in stride, knowing Ui's background. Otterman hasn't given up on Ui yet, so it's likely he'll try to find a more effective way to socialize Ui with otters …OR slowly but gently & persistently brute-force it over time and hope Ui eventually understands -- that's kind of been his (successful) M.O. with her.
@@Soufriere84 It's how you gauge animal's reactions to each other and let them get used to each other's scent without fear of biting or the extreme stress of having an unknown individual or group in your living/play space, or next to your mate in this case.
There's also the fact that Ui learns a lot from watching Aty. She's learned Otterman's commands and how to swim quickly by watching how Aty does things. I think keeping her confined comfortably and letting her watch Aty's behavior would do a lot to help her learn how she should behave. After that, a solo meeting with a peaceful otter like Kotaro or Komugi might be a good idea before moving up to more advanced socialization of Hana or the Twins.
Otterman is probably the best otter communicator when it comes to domestically kept otters, but he is unfortunately not perfect, no. I'm glad he had so much faith in Ui to believe she would be okay with so openly meeting other otters like this because she gets a long so well with Aty, but I was anticipating this kind of reaction a lot more than a peaceful one. She may love Aty now, but it took 6 months before she would let him come near without biting and it seems like she's interacted with no other otter since.
I think the best bet would be to take her back to Northern Mishima, a place where she has lived comfortably and has a good relationship with the owner, and see if she does well with the other otters there. It'll probably take a while for her to get to the point where she can trust other otters, but there's no way Otterman's giving up on her now.
@@ManOutofTime913 From your keyboard to Otterman's ears. Ui met Komugi without Aty in the room and, sure enough, they immediately got along. Yes, Ui bit him once, but that's just Ui, and Komugi didn't care.

You're the best pet parent! Thank you for treating animals with love and understanding of their needs.
I actually like the fact that you don't immediately panic and jump in to "rescue" them as they get swept away in a strong current lol. Since it's more than likely good for them to develop that swimming strength needed for aquatic based animals. Being in "captivity" they aren't nearly as athletic as otters would normally be. A wild otter likely wouldn't have had any trouble whatsoever "outswimming" a current like that.

Fortunately, most commenters seem aware of Ui's background and are willing to give her a pass, especially since she was (in her own mind) protecting her man from outsiders she didn't remember, as otters do.

Ui is too far gone, she's actually a wild animal, not a domesticated pet as the other 3. It's almost animal cruelty to force a wild animal to be civil and stress her out, when she's meant to be free in nature deciding her own interaction with other otters.

It's going to take time but Ui is slowly making adjustments. Poor thing; it's great of Otterman to take her in as a rescue avd raise her in his home. That's a lot of work.
I love how, in the opening scene where Ui is freaking out and digging and losing her mind, when otterman finally picks her up and is holding her up at eye level looking her in the eyes, and she's just kind of dangling in the air there with dirt all over her face... and she looks remorseful, with this look on her face that's just like, "sorry, Dad..."

Another great time with Captain Aty !Always ready to reach out. Big Eyes Ui is just anxious. It will take time for her to realize how lovely company Professor Kotaro and Big Hana are.
One hopes Big H will start realizing the downsides of being so Chonk, but I doubt otters think in those terms, especially her since she is such a lazy glutton.

I don't know if Ui is possessive to her territory but I think she's not used to stranger otters, she thought Aty and her only the existing otters. Haha.. but she will get used to it for sure. She'll conqere that fear of strangers. They are all cute!

@@jayziemipa4843 Its suspected that Ui's previous owner abused her. She was very agressive and still reacts badly if approached suddenly. The owner and Aty have only managed yo bind with her after 1+ years of constant communication and training
@@smile4u482 She had an owner in between the otter cafe and Northern Mishima. _That's_ who abused her and then abandoned her to NM, although the cafe may not have been much better since they sold her at far-too-young.

Ui has had a tough upbringing before living with Aty, Mr Cat and Otterman and something triggered her to act.
I noticed to that Hana was being protective towards Kotaro too.
I am sure that once she gets to know Kotaro & Hana, they will be the best of friends.
Aty & Otterman have both done a wonderful job so far in giving Ui the love she has missed and they are not at fault.
Kotaro the dolphin! Too cute watching him try to swim against the current and not doing very well.
Then of course Aty swims upriver it like it's nothing. At least Kotaro is smart enough to quickly figure out his "Dolphin Technique" would work. We don't call him the Professor for nothing!

Hana and Kotaro have an otter reunion with friendly Ati and hostile Ui. Other than Ui's attitude problem, it was good for RUclips's most famous otter celebs to see and socialize with each other.
Mmmm …Hana isn’t always so friendly. Towards either Aty or Kotaro himself. You must remember Ui has had serious problems in her earlier life and she’s making major improvements every day thanks to her new dad Otterman and his attentive care. Remember Hana has been hostile even without another female around for competition..!!
@@TheMintyMelon You're exaggerating Hana's "hostility." She had in the past an incident where Aty tried to mate with her. But Hana snipped at him and indicated she wasn't interested. She is loyal to Kotaro and went back to sleep with him in their carrier after that incident. She's actually a little guarded but is not unfriendly to Aty here, considering the circumstances.
Hana is not initially aggressive towards Ui here either. She was watching Ui with Kotaro in the back of the car. Hana is herself getting used to being around more otters than Kotaro and is occasionally shy around them. But she saw Ui snip at Kotaro and is clearly being protective of her partner after that moment. Seeing that incident makes her wariness around Ui in some other clips make sense.
I've also seen a lot of clips of Hana's relationship with Kotaro. I haven't seen her snip at him or get angry much. She's pretty free spirited and happy most of the time. She just doesn't like spraying water so she hates Kotaro playing with the hose around her. I've seen her be very playful and feisty with Kotaro and sometimes she's sneaky with his food. But she clearly loves him and is pair bonded to him in their unique relationship.

I was so scared for Kotaro there for a moment, when he was being carried away by the current! Our city otters were just learning about river swimming. But what a fantastic job he did of suddenly rearing up and employing his dolphin swim.technique! BTW, is anyone going to note that Hana was using it to swim in the shallows herself? She's really coming along.
Poor Ui! She clearly felt threatened on her turf. Her snipping at Kotaro should help everyone understand why Hana is very wary of Ui in many later clips. Hana gets upset protecting Kotaro. It's good to see that more time spent together is helping all the otters to get used to this new grouping.
Captain Aty is a cutie and the king of river swimming. I.think he still shot a couple of looks at Princess Hana. That probably didn't help matters with Ui! 🙂
